"The notion of the “citizen-expert” -- someone like Robert Scoble, who is well-known in his field, but makes time and effort to reach out to unknowns-- is unique to Silicon Valley culture where the difference between “known” and “unknown” can change overnight. This paradigm does not exist in other fields. Silicon Valley is still building up an infrastructure around social media and social media itself is evolving daily, so blogs and tweets have become their primary information sources...Twitter offers the option of keeping one’s feed “closed” and that’s an option I’m seeing most of my non-tech world friends choosing. And while they’re an admittedly non-scientific sampling, they are, to a one, baffled by the notion of following/being followed by strangers and the fact that there are people who actively seek out strangers to follow them. They view it both in terms of security and social normalcy: why would you want all these complete strangers to know you like raisins in your oatmeal (and vice versa)?

Excellent post on why all "influencers" are not created equal and all Twitter users are not just like you. A few more great tidbits from the post: "when a Guy Kawasaki asserts that everyone on Twitter really wants to have thousands of followers, he needs to frame his statement in terms of the Twitterers he’s actually talking about: those people working in the space who wish to use...

I have ran into walls and nothing but walls constructed of big EGOs besides the fact that I am a bi-racial person of color....

Yes Ernie.."the talent of our entrepreneurial community needs to be turned towards solving the world's great problems as opposed to delivering yet another consumer experience"..kinda like the Jobs to Scully question: "Do you want to sell sugar water, or change the world?".

"BTW, I also predicted that the Mets would win the world series last year. Maybe this was just a little misdirection. Or maybe it wasn't. Bwahahaha. Ha."

Hey, this post should be an iPhone app. Oh, wait, that is where I read it.

The same could be said for a lot of ad agency ideas as well. Heck, throw in an "I like" campaign for Facebook and you would ask the same questions. Why would anyone want to participate.

"It's all about who you know and where you go. These guys not only live the lifestyle, they define it. Take a look back at the Hollywood hotspots where it all happened."
