Thunderstruck by Erik Larson. 4/5 stars. I bought it thinking it was fiction, but surprise, it's non-fiction. Two alternating stories are told. One is the fascinating development of wireless communication by Marconi on the brink of WWI. A true tale of obsession. The other story is an odd one.
A mild mannered patent medicine pusher marries a high energy actress of little talent. He becomes a henpecked husband seemingly resigned to supporting her lavish bohemian lifestyle. Another tale of obsession. I kept wondering what the heck these stories had to do with each other, but they resolve together in a famous murder mystery chase across the ocean. The result was the secure future of wireless for Marconi and a snapped neck for the other. Most interesting was how Marconi developed a technology and industry without actually knowing what he was doing. Fascinating as it was surprising.
