On Alexis de Tocqueville's scale of egoism, individualism, and elitism, the US started with a normal distribution centered around individualism. With material needs satisfied we have switched to a bimodal distribution centered around egoism and elitism.
Egoism is excessive self-regard, something that's been pushed lately. Elitism is seen as the end result of the material success of democracy where successful people become isolated and self-contained, no-longer dependent on any society for life. Individualism is a kind of middle ground where people have self-regard, but they work with others to succeed along lines of self-interest, a kind of cool regard.
