"See .. that's what I'm talking about .. the people on the street who aren't up on the issue ... when they hear about Time Warner and caps they buy into the "It costs so much to maintain it" story. I mean think about it ... maybe you've lived in your house for 10 years ... You're probably sending them close to $1000 a year ... Nothings changed ... same cable line. $10,000 poorer. They didn't little or nothing for improvement for you with your $10,000 ... just kept pocketing the money as profit and not making significant investments in infrastructure. You already paid for their improvements ... now they want you to pay again! It's greed .. pure and simple ... no two ways about it."
- Todd Loren Sinclair
"Great news! I'm waiting for the legislation ... This isn't just about greed for more internet revenue ... its about stifling online video to the advantage of their cable business. This is important stuff people ... Pay attention ... Once you're capped ... you're capped forever."
- Todd Loren Sinclair
"Great news .. but I'd like to see some legislation to stop the same issue from rearing its UGLY head in the future ... Mr . Schhumer... go ahead please!"
- Todd Loren Sinclair
"So ... lets do the math ... Time Warner unlimited $150 each month ... unlimited DSL $35 a month ... ( Yes, DSL streams hulu and netflix just fine thank you) So Time Warner is $1380 more per year ... That's more than the AIG bailout is costing me ... \ Its not about web video access causing their loss of cable TV customers? ... Really? ... Oh come on ... Really? Frankly... they are too expensive already without price changes or tiers and bandwidth caps ... Lets picket at the Time Warner's Executives houses ..."
- Todd Loren Sinclair
"As Dave Burstein, editor of trade publication DSL Prime said "No one is going to stop Comcast, Verizon, or AT&T from practices that are truly necessary to efficiently run a network. The issue is blocking competitive video and charging 1,000 percent and higher markups on bandwidth that are unacceptable.".. Dave you took the word right out of my mouth!"
- Todd Loren Sinclair
"Its easy enough to watch Hulu in a browser on my TV using an hdmi cable. I keep a bluetooth mouse on the coffee table for navigation. It would be much more convenient if it was available as plugin with a nice easy to browse interface on my popcorn hour box or netgear digital entertainer hd or windows media extender ... It'll get there eventually ... Netflix already is available as a plugin"
- Todd Loren Sinclair
I installed it on my mac, dont know why though
- Simon Wicks
Can you say anything about hardware specs, Robert? I don't know if MS is playing the NDA game with the beta release.
- teleken
Have you tried mouse hovering over the task bar in the bottom right (there's a small rectangle with no label) - does a nice 'show desktop' effect. Pretty cool so far eh?
- David Ing
Why does Robert get so impressed by every new technology ?
- Sidharth Dassani
Robert: Understood. Now the question is whether I drop it in Parallels on the MacBook, or go for broke/masochism and see how the Inspiron Mini handles it. ;) There's the real acid test for a new Windows OS.
- teleken
teleken, I have it on Fusion and on my netbook. Both work amazingly well. The only problem with using it on Parallels/Fusion is that you will not get Aero and hence won't get all the nifty Aero-dependent desktop features like Desktop preview, the preview panels etc.
- Kamath (नमः)
What are the minimum memory reqs on it?
- Jason Wong
Is it a winner because it actually installed correctly, or because you're impressed with the new feature set...
- Shay Frendt
Also, try left-clicking on a taskbar item and then dragging upward.

Looking forward to the release after posts like this. Read that idle W7 uses appr. 600-650 MB RAM. Anyone confirm those numbers?

The real killer feature for Windows 7 would be a little dialog box at the beginning of the upgrade process that simply says "If you proceed with this upgrade, you will lose N days of productivity to trying to troubleshoot drivers, software incompatibilities, and reinstallation of incompatible programs; to re-learning simple UI tasks; and to experimenting with superficial cosmetic changes, all for marginal UX and performance gains . Do you want to continue? Yes / No"
- Ken Sheppardson
Jason: I don't know what the hardware requirements are but it uses fewer resources than Vista. So, just go with the hardware requirements for Vista.
- Robert Scoble
I've had Windows 7 running with just 128mb RAM in a VM - Excellent memory management.
- Nigel Kitchen
teleken: My MacBook is running it fine, no problems so far, although I've only really been playing around with settings and stuff, not installed any big software to try with it. I used VM Ware to do it, Parallels always gave me problems so i switched.
- Simon Wicks
Since I have both Vista & Ubuntu I think I can wait until all you early adopters work out the bugs. :D Seriously, I will wait until it is forced upon me when I buy another computer. That should be about 3 years from now.
- MarkCarras
REALLY tempted to run the beta on my laptop...a bit nervous to run any beta on my main rig but i think it wouldn't be so bad on my laptop....hmmmmmmm
- Live4Emma (L4S)
dual booting 7 with vista and 7 is running so much faster than vista. i'm happy that they cut down the min. req.

Stay away from AVG under Windows 7...triggers a heinous BSOD in tdx.sys...

I have been unable to download the Windows 7 image from Microsoft's site. I think they're a bit overloaded at the moment!
- John Bellone
John, have you tried since Saturday? My download worked like a champ Saturday afternoon. Also Brandon LeBlanc @ Microsoft is reporting that extra capacity was added and the download site has been working smoothly since Saturday AM. Also they have removed the 2.5 million limit on the number of beta testers -- as long as you get it before January 24, you can get a product key: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs...
- Karim
Upgraded main computer? will MS support upgrade from Beta to RTM?
- Vaibhav
I installed Windows 7 64-bit and Chrome doesn't work at all. GRR.
- Phil G
I like the things they have done with respect to perf and UI changes, but this is what Vista should have been in the first place and I hope the upgrade from Vista to 7 is cheaper given the small number of differences between the two.
- Vaibhav
I got it here on my HP Mini 1000. Running good so far... not doing much though
- Bwana ☠
Phil, have you run the compatibility wizard on it?
- Akiva Moskovitz
@Mike Dove I have 7 x64 with AVG installed. I don't have any problems with it.
- Vaibhav
Akiva - nope but that command line switch I just linked to did the trick.
- Phil G
@Vaibhav Perhaps you are getting lucky. I believe I was triggering it with the Outlook Email scanner portion of AVG, it may be that for normal operation it is fine.
- Mike Dove
Karim, What link did you use? MIcrosoft's site seems so slow.
- John Bellone
When attempting to download Windows 7 I click "Download Now" and nothing happens.
- John Bellone
Windows Weekly mentioned that there's quite a nasty MP3 truncating bug in the beta. If you value your music collections, it's probably best to avoid using WMP. Apparently there's a hot fix available.
- Paul Grav
@Paul it was the first thing I did after installing Win7 and Windows Media Player is working just fine with no damage to the mp3's that I have been able to tell yet
- Steven Hodson
@Paul same here. It works fine after hotfix
- Vaibhav
Awesome news.... I hope MS Windows 7 is a winner...that would be great!
- Susan Beebe
Yep, Windows 7 went pretty smooth so far; tackling my main home/Windows Media Center device now. +1 for sex life as well.
- Wade Dorrell
Whats the timeline before it expires on you? how painless was the upgrade?
- Stephen Smyth
I wrote about my initial install experience on The Inquisitr (http://www.inquisitr.com/14951...) with some follow Snapshot posts at WinExtra .. I'm liking this release of Windows
- Steven Hodson
Stephen, it expires in August which means a Beta 2 or RC1 in July (or a hotfix to extend the death date).
- Akiva Moskovitz
Been running Windows 7 for about a week. Loving it!
- David Andrzejewski
A friend just loaded Win7, she is upset that she can't find a way to make it Classic UI. It will be a long long time before I upgrade in that case.
- Tina Clarke
I've heard someone saying he was expecting something new in Windows 7 and literally got the same Vista OS, just a little faster. Don't you think Microsoft is re-selling the same system (only a bit improved) instead of giving us a new one?
- Nir Ben Yona
I think I'll be waiting for the BETA-tag to go away. I have tried vista and xp in beta and I regret it, so..this time I'll wait for the FULL and not beta version of Windows 7.
- Qbat
In case anyone cares, I threw Windows 7 on a late 2006 Compaq V6600 laptop with a Turion 1.8GHZ processor. This was one of those Vista capable machines. It was running XP (it never had Vista on it) and Windows 7 runs better than XP did. It has 2GB RAM. It's not a low powered laptop nor is the CPU/chipset that old but it's nice to see Windows 7 run so smoothly on it. Windows 7 installed...

John - if you are using the technet download link (the one with the serial number) , it will try to invoke a downloader app which only works in IE. If you find one of the many blogs with the direct download link, those should work with any browser.
- Phil G
Previously as a test, I upgrade installed the Windows 7 6801 beta on a Vista 32 machine that was heavily used (over 1400 installed applications) and was shocked to see it that not only did everything still work (Zonealarm, LogMeIn, MICROSOFT FINGERPRINT READER!), but it was MUCH snappier and startup and shutdown was significantly better. Not that I would ever recommend an upgrade...

- Mitchell Tsai
Failed to mention that the upgrade install on the Vista 32 box w/ 1400+ apps took at least 3 hours. I can't remember exactly how long. But it took forever, which was expected...
- Dr. Apps
from twhirl
Like it so far. Install was a bit difficult, but thats probably my fault (dual boot machine). Snappier than Vista, cleaner than Vista. Uses about 20% less RAM on my machine.
- Chad Albert
Dr Apps mine took hours too. I ran it while I slept.
- Robert Scoble
Just tried streaming h.264 video to a xbox as an extender. It works !!
- Olivier Castets
Fresh install took me < 30mins to login prompt. Upgrades take a lot longer.
- Chris Johnson
John, I am using the regular Technet link: http://bit.ly/NJJb If you're seeing "Download Now" I assume you have gotten past the Live ID logon, profile update and gotten your Product key? The download uses an ActiveX control or Java applet download manager. Assuming you are on Windows :-) try your download in IE, and allow the ActiveX control to install.
- Karim
I have Windows 7 beta running on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor 4000+ with 2 Gig of Ram and it runs better then Vista Home Premium did. The only issue is I can not get my Netgear SC101 NAS box to recognize. Does anyone have any ideas?
- Rob Cairns
"windows", "winner" - is this an example of #15, say something outrageous ;-)
- Neil Saunders
Peter Simard: That's awesome! I'm sure you backed up first, but were quite relieved it all went well. :) Rob Cairns: I didn't even know the SC101 worked with Vista in the first place... I gave up on that thing so long ago. That is probably the only piece of hardware I've ever regretted buying. Though it sounds like you've had a good experience with it if you're still using it. I'd say wait a few days and see if anybody comes up with a solution. I took a cursory glance and didn't find any info...
- Dr. Apps

Robert - Using it since late yesterday. On two boxes, more stable than the original final releases of Windows NT and/or Windows 2000. More drivers supported up front than in Vista. Think MS learned something and the download limit drop will bring a lot of embedded techies. It's a win.
- Charlie Anzman
Thanks for being on the bleeding edge, just about to load the Windows 7 beta myself.. Good to know it upgraded properly for you.
- TechMama Beth Blecherman
I'm going to download it tonight Can't wait!
- Michael Fidler
It was a long upgrade for me... but overall I like it.
- Jason Womick
Been very happy with Windows 7 so far. Many subtle improvements add up to a much better product than Vista.
- Jim Bednarz
I am happy with Windows 7. Fresh install was effortless, but after the install and adding all possible board drivers, four "System Interrupts" entries remain yellow. At least the LAN connectors worked immediately.
- Robert Miller
I put win7 on a Toshiba Satellite a65 from 2003 and it works better than xp did
- Todd Loren Sinclair
Stephen : The upgrade was painless 90 minutes or so and a couple of reboots later. The only issue I had as previously mentioned was my Netgear Sc 101 issue - it did work on Vista. It expires in August
- Rob Cairns
I have successfully downloaded the x86 version and I have completed 71% of the x64 version so it is out there for those who are both pig headed enough to keep trying and lucky enough to get a connection that doesn't time out.
- Robert Banghart
Hmm, anyone know where I can get just the ISO itself, seeing that I've obtained the trial license? It appears that the Download button doesn't function for me, in Firefox. :(
- Tyson Key
The Windows 7 Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009. according to FAQ. Release in august?? :)
- Fredrik Fällman
Probably means a second beta in July and a release in October.
- Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva .. I'm betting on an RTM in July
- Steven Hodson
Why does it ask me for my Windows live ID to download the beta?
- David
still waiting for the download to go live ... *sigh* .. it is the afternoon after all
- Steven Hodson
Think the profile servers are the bottleneck here.
- Roberto Bonini
I am only getting the circle of green dots.
- Mario (wisher)
A blogger at a Seattle tech site posted: The downloading in fact has NOT started. It is scheduled to begin noon PST. Just getting to the windows 7 page takes endless attempts, but once on the site, no option for downloading has yet to be posted.

When Yahoo's stock hit $12, we said it was ridiculously cheap. Now it's below $9. Given that no one else seems to want to buy and fix this once-great and still amazingly valuable company, we're now offering to do it ourselves.
- Todd Loren Sinclair
Agreed, just seems like there is no consequences for those that made the company fail.
- Bryan
I strongly agree ... don't bail out those gamblers and speculators
- Todd Loren Sinclair
Jason: and if we listened to you the whole economy would stall. That would be really fun. You want food lines on your front door?
- Robert Scoble
Strongly agree. Let's not reward bad behavior.
- AJ Kohn
It's not just the investment bankers involved here, it's millions of people with mortgages they can't pay. That's part of the bailout isn't it? I mean the bankers shouldn't have given them mortgages in the first place, but can the US economy afford to have that many foreclosures in one hit without some sort of bailout?
- jjprojects
from twhirl
If the taxpayers buy these houses, does that mean we can stay in them for free? Don't come to me with your sad stories about not paying your mortgage. I didn't buy that house. I didn't sign the loan papers. Why should I pay for your mess?
- Graham Bates
from twhirl
@jj: Can America afford to have a generation living on the edge, barely getting by on 'reduced mortgages' and unable to save for retirement or contribute to the GDP via consumer spending? These folks need to take their lumps, housing needs to normalize in comparison to income, many others waiting in the wings will step in. Failed homeowners have rentals and should be afforded some leniency on bankruptcy and credit so they can re-enter home market when fiscally appropriate.
- AJ Kohn
There are already millions that can't pay the mortgage: Renters. The bleeding hearts forced the government to force the companies to get renters into houses by whatever means necessary. Now that we know that doesn't work, let them rent again. We shouldn't be paying for either of these.
- John Rubier
from twhirl
Unfortunately we have to. If we don't our economy will fail and we will fall into a depression. Then more of you will be in the same position that I'm in, no job. Except for most of you it will be worse, cause you'll lose your homes and everything that you have worked for. So, like it or not, we have no other options.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Well there's a smarter way to do it vs dumber ways...Any deal that doesn't include a big frackin' stick upside the heads of the companies (particularly the execs in charge of said companies) is worthless...Any deal that doesn't attempt to get the maximum payoff to taxpayers is worthless...If I'm paying for a bailout of these companies, I want a share of any future profits.
- Alex Scoble
As taxpayers, we get screwed either way whether the bailout happens or not. It's still be the rich gets richer, the poor gets poorer while the middle class is shrinking.
- imabonehead
Wrong. Nothing to be congratulated about. He says stuff like this all the time. He said that to get attention. That's what he does. He says things to shock people and he gets ratings for it.

from twhirl
You fail to understand my qualm, Jamie - I take no issue with app developers who charge for their wares, it's when they release an app for free to boost ratings / rankings, then switch to a paid version and land themselves in the top X list instantaneously. It's just as janky when the App Store launched and developers were renaming their apps to appear at the top of the list. It's just *BAD MARKETING* that pisses me off.
- l0ckergn0me
Well, good marketing, because it works. But bad ethics. It's basically figuring out a way to lie without actually doing it. Anyway, it's manipulating their way to higher rankings.
- WazNeeni
Chris, could you share the app names?
- Akshay Dodeja
What you're pointing out is that these "Top" lists are too simple to be useful to you in a highly competitive environment. Any system is going to be gamed. Think about it: my guess is the tallies are going to be biased towards early developers too. A good system will have to avoid this too.
- Loren Heiny
Loren...how 'bout Sales (not d/l's) per Month. That would wipe out both of those issues.
- WazNeeni
I noticed an app or two doing the same thing. I immediately uninstalled their app. I don't support such gimmicks.
- Corvida
I haven't paid for an app yet on my iPod touch. Figured I'd let the market mature a bit.
- Bill Sodeman
But you are assuming that THAT is the SOLE reason they switched to paid. How do you know? Maybe the app got popular, and they thought, I could make some money from this instead of giving it away. Should they have instead waited until it was no longer popular, off the Top list, and THEN switched it to paid? :P
- Andru Edwards
Andru, c'mon - even you're not so naive to believe that "Crazy Lighter" was worth free two days ago, with other ezone apps going for .99, then suddenly ezone saw the light (no pun intended) and raised the price right at the moment it could outseat the #1 paid app? That's a slimy tactic.
- l0ckergn0me
He's gotcha there, Christopher. Maybe they wanted to test the waters to see if *anyone* would want it, with the plan of being a paid app the whole time?
- WazNeeni
I dont misunderstand your qualm Chris. I just don't think its valid. Is it taking advantage of a loop hole in the AppStore? Sure. Is it *wrong* to do so? Hell no. Its great marketing and a chance for the dev to make money on his app. Are you honestly saying you would not take advantage if the same situation applied to you? Its effectively SEO what is taking place here. And something as trivial as changing the price of an app is entirely within his rights as the developer. Blame the game, not the player.
- Jamie
Jamie: "Is it *wrong* to do so? Hell no." Are you ethically bankrupt? Clearly , no need to answer. No one is saying that he shouldn't make money on his app. Of course he should. I feel like I'm watching a presidential campaign ad that is taking what someone said and spinning it.The bottom line is he's taking advantage of a loophole and gaming the system. Certainly not illegal, but certainly not ethical. Apple should close this loophole by resetting the counter or creating a new counter for paid downloads.
- Greg
I agree with you completely .. business or not .. it's just plain shady
- Todd Loren Sinclair
@Jamie @Andru @WazNeeni - Looks like Apple agrees with me. The Top 100 list doesn't include "Crazy Lighter" anymore. It must've been removed at some point this afternoon. Hopefully, they've set it up so that when an app goes from free to paid (or vice versa), it also loses its rankings / ratings for that app type.
- l0ckergn0me
Bravo Apple. Ethical business practices prevail in spite of those who live off the scraps.
- Greg
@Chris: sometimes you are birlliant, sometimes you're a donut - this is one of those occasions.
- Dennis Howlett
from twhirl
@Chris not quite - I admitted its a loophole which Apple needed to close. But thats a separate issue. What I am arguing is that a developer taking advantage of that loophole by simple changing the price of *his* app really isnt that big of a deal. Hes just trying to make money. And to be labelled slimy and talking about shame is a bit over the top. @Greg - I can do without the character judgement from yourself thanks.
- Jamie
@Jamie if you base your arguments on ethical issues and then give your opinion you can't then take my ability to offer my opinion off the table. Anyway...on we go.
- Greg
Excuse me - but isn't this what Web 2.0 is BUILT on? Release something for free, get traction, user base and good will then transition to a paid model?
- Soulhuntre
@ Greg you are completely missing the point. Lets just say that Apple fail to close the loophole; you are effectively saying that a developer can't ever raise the price of his product without being labelled slimy. If by not supporting that notion, that makes me "ethically bankrupt", then so be it. But wow @ folks thinking its that serious. There's much more to worry about in the world of 'gaming' web services than one devs right to adjust the pricing of his very own product.
- Jamie
Just to clarify, I am talking in general, not specifics. If this ezone company is taking advantage of it specifically for that purpose, sure, I am against that. I am just saying, I don't see anything wrong with RANDOM COMPANY putting out a free app, then seeing it shoot to, say, #3 free app, and then saying - wait, I can charge $2 for this and can be making a killing. So they do. I am all for it. Now, if a company is doing it JUST to be at the top of the paid apps list, I find that to be dicey.
- Andru Edwards
Hi Simon from ezone here. For the record, we're not trying to 'game' the system and land the #1 paid spot (but of course we aren't complaining!). If/when Apple plugs the loophole we will continue to give away all our apps for free for the first couple days to build awareness and then revert to paid. We've never been featured in itune's picks, new, hot, etc., and offering free apps is a way to get heard above the noise. How about supporting us small devs rather than labelling us unethical slimeballs.
- Simon Edis
More on this here. http://www.doipod.com/ipod... Seems there are pretty consistent feelings about the nature of this approach to publicity.
- Greg
I agree Chris, it is stupid to allow a company to so easily manipulate the rankings.
