What do you think about including certification acronyms in the "name" section of LinkedIn? i.e: "John Doe, MCSE, CCIE, CISSP, RHCE, Douchebag, Narcissist"
As you can see, I'm pretty negative about usage of this crappy designations in the name section. I think it's like shouting "hey! look this is the biggest achievement in my life. passing a lousy exam..."
- Berk D. Demir
I have mine PMP, MCSE right in my name. Good for PR, somewhat bad for google indexing of just your name. Personally, I'd avoid the last 2 "credentials you have listed up there! ha, ha!
- Susan Beebe
On the other hand, I'm indifferent to academic designations. It's OK to use Ph.D suffix or Dr. prefix if the context is relevant... But you don't order pizza like this huh? "Hi. I'm Dr. Sheldon Cooper, double Ph.D!.. I guess I'll order a double mozzarella, extravaganza, thin and crispy please..."
- Berk D. Demir
I don't like it. Although I have the number of my connections, it helps in getting more connections. I still don't understand why Linkedin does not tell you the actual number of connections

Thanks for the reply Susan... Do you see a real advantage of PR in your case... Your resume is far impressive and your professional designations are listed below again. I think in your case, these designations shadow your much more important achievements.
- Berk D. Demir
I also have a negative attitude towards the use of cert.s in the name section. However, it is also a truth that some of the Ph.D or Dr. suffixes are easier to receive than some of the certifications. But, at the end of the day, from my point of view, in a professional context, it is far more reasonable to add academic designations around the name.
- Onur Karaagaoglu
Adding certifications and degrees to the name field seems silly to me. If people want to find see your certification and academic standing, they can look in your profile. As Berk says, I don't tell the pizza person that I'm Dr. Sodeman.

"When Guy Kawasaki blogged about the Ten Ways to Use LinkedIn, LinkedIn had 8.5 million users in 130 industries. Since then we've grown to over 12 million users covering 147 industries, but many of Guy's suggestions on using LinkedIn (see below), still remain a great way for professionals to strengthen their online brand reputation and leverage their professional network. Happy Reading!"

How many times this will appear here? :) Double entries are really THE #1 thing to solve on FF. Btw, I like the article though.

The challenge is participation. I've created a room for my company (Interwoven) and although I have lots of co-workers (including our President) subscribed to the room, I have almost no participation from anyone but me. I continue to share and encourage others to share but I can't seem to get the momentum I was hoping for.

“** Announcing Discussions for LinkedIn Groups ** - "First, thank you for managing your group on LinkedIn. We sincerely appreciate the time and effort you devote to your members, and we know they value it. Together you have made Groups one of the top features on LinkedIn. These new GROUP Features will make LinkedIn much more *interactive* and powerful for groups, networking, corporate forums, etc... I am excited about this launch!

That's funny. I changed jobs, and I saw the update on FF from LinkedIn about the old job ending. I didn't see anything about the new job beginning, though.
"Linkedin recommendations are people centric and not strength centric. for eg: If I request my manager, John Doe, to give me a recommendation, he would give me a recommendation based on his preconceived way of giving a recommendation. Now this could be totally different from other recommendations because of a multitude of things, but the most important points which would affect John Doe’s recommendation are :"

What are your thought Erhan? Do you have any comments ?
- ReviewScale
In hiring processes, recommendations should match with companies' job description. Because of this, the user(my colleague, boss, friend, etc..) must see the offer from all companies and/or my wish listed positions, then they write something about me. These are three steps of the game for recommendation writer: Understand-Think-Compose. (direct recommendation=time=reliability)
- Erhan Erdogan
Interesting - recommendations for a hiring process is definitely something you need to tailor for the actual post. Something which Linkedin doesnt support currently.

I've recently used LinkedIn to directly contact a recruiter for a technical position within their company. Is contacting a recruiter directly an appropriate use of LinkedIn? They were a 3rd Level contact, and an "introduction" may not have been effective.
I think it's if they list job inquiries under their interest. I have done it couple of times and I can say it works and it's more effective. I used two criteria: 1) if they are interested in inquiries 2) if they allow direct messaging or list their email address. Good luck!
- Turker Keskinpala
I agree intoduction may have not worked, recruiters are pretty much disposed to be contacted after all they use Linkedin for that purpose. I think those are the people you should care less interrupting as after all it's their job. I suggest you are pretty upfront with them talking about why you contacted them

"The management at LinkedIn should create more ways to help the passive candidates become more active website users. The site has evolved to the point where it could be described as a job board masquerading as a social network. This may be good enough to bury Monster, but what about competition from newer, web 2.0 challengers?"

I agree, hte user experience is one of the poorest in the web although the underlying intent is great. Something needs to be done

@Harvey: It's not all that heavy reading - only a list of 5 groups I found and joined myself that are related to social media. @Oliver: You can actually buy the cup from their store, I have simply decided using a logo would be boring :)
