Game Addiction: The Real Story - http://digg.com/gaming_...
"congrats to you for kicking one habit, and moving onto another one. you traded one addiction for another one that is more socially acceptable. while i can sympathise, addiction is something that the individual has to deal with as part of their personality, it's not WoW's fault that the achievement/reward was more than compelling enough to keep you playing for that time. its addictive. yes. but it's not as if you can teach addiction awareness to kids or teens or adults. oh wait..." - Michael Guy

Time Machine. These decisions are all easier once you sell your soul to Mr. Jobs. - Craig from IM
Uh, Time Capsule. That's not confusing at all. - Craig from IM
simplicity: drobo.com, it has mac/pc support. it will also do time capsule stuff if you add netatalk for apple file support. if you create a music folder, you can install firefly for music sharing a folder without itunes, or twonkymedia for sharing content to xbox360/ps3 or other tv connected hardware - Michael Guy
i should edit my original reply, i'd recommend the drobo because it's hackable & cheaper than the thecus n2100 i bought last year for home NAS, the cheaper alts. like the lacie/wd my books aren't hackable,i.e. to run apps/webservers. - Michael Guy
We have a Drobo for The Guild. Sean Becker, the director/editor and I make fun of the name and do it in a robot voice. DROWBOW! Like turrett's syndrome we'll yell it out while editing. Hmm, you kinda have to be there. HA! - Felicia

Serious games: Ars looks at games that tackle the big issues - http://digg.com/gaming_...
"long story short - games are audio-visual mediums telling stories about war, history, life, sic. therefore it's art, art is valid, so by watching me beat this virtual stranger to death with a baseball bat or jumping into a sewer pipe to rescue a princess, it's now art. ART. do you feel informed ? i've saved you ~49 page ads, 2000 words of drivel." - Michael Guy

Fannie & Freddie: The Real Story Behind The Economic Crisis - http://digg.com/busines...
"point 1. politics, like money, influences people. while you might imagine politics is something manageable like money, it's very hard to ask someone with a lot of power, to hand it back. arguing that the solution to commercial failure is to let someone back into the game so they can win it all back, is presumptive on so many levels, mostly that the market works if you keep letting people back in if they fail. how do you 'supposed' it happened that politicians meddling in the market was the cause, solution or problem, and that the answer is now, opening up controls to a handful of investors and brokers who don't have anyone's interests except their own ? you need to step back a step, and preface your argument for each point, since it's obvious to you that a free-market economy is vital, but it's ultimately questionable as to wether or not the current political system can handle a truly free-market economic system. can it ? you might believe in free-market economics, but what's your..." - Michael Guy

Fix your music library:song names, album art, automatically! - http://digg.com/softwar...
"try using jaikoz, it integrates MusicIP and musicbrainz metadata, it's also fantastic for bulk-tagging, and filling in metadata in selective bundles. i.e. highlight the album and remote-correct, then if it fails to sync up, undo and try manually tagging one file for the 'proper' name from the Musicbrainz library, then copy/pasting the proper album name (or just copying the MB album id), artist, year, country release, cover art, etc. it's not great at loading more than 2-3,000 songs at a time (java memory alloc is poor i guess.) but you can bulk-tag albums or compilations and the metadata quite easily." - Michael Guy

"the problem with all tagging is ... bulk tagging usually sucks balls if you don't know what it's supposed to be. if you do, making it easy is a great thing. T, the godfather, itunes tagging, etc. makes sense, you can see what those 20 songs are supposed to be, artist bios, genres, release dates, compilation info, etc. 2,000 songs later, do you really want to spend 5 minutes per album, picking between country releases or release dates, placing songs into multiple genres, etc. if you've left the problem alone for a few months, years, etc. you won't remember what an album is if itunes hasn't tagged it properly, and when you import into the bulk taggers, it's 'track 01 01 01.mp4' now, instead of that GTA4 soundtrack or a top 10 compilation disc you grabbed off the cover of a magazine, etc. T doesn't do this." - Michael Guy

"i also never had a smooth experience with FixTunes, kept breaking MP4 files and breaking official compilations into random albums, etc. plus their trial is a bad, bad idea, 50 songs is meaningless if it won't work for the kinds of songs you don't see in the first 50 that show up. useless" - Michael Guy

Valve wanted $1m Apple to port Half Life to OS X! - http://digg.com/apple...
"i think the worst part of the EA's PR "maneuver" to get games onto macs is that they are all are cider ports, which you can do yourself if you download cider from transgaming's website and wrap it around bf2142 or cnc3, etc. its not native code, it's windows directx code running under emulation layers, the same way that linux gamers run games under cedega or wine. you can almost do the same thing with steam and halflife 2 / team fortress 2, run it entirely in cider and play the game from within the emulation. it wont work all that well, but it's an option. if valve got a native steam portal running for OS X PPC and intel users, they could use it to really get developers from all aspects to pitch in and develop a solid delivery platform for mac apps and linux apps by extension, the code is similar enough to be made universal for all platforms, and just stick emulation around the packages in a pinch. and it's relatively easy to do. aspyr has done this in it's game agent for notifying of..." - Michael Guy

OS X Style Dock that will make your Co-Workers Drool - http://digg.com/linux_u...
"its a pain, since the enlightenment "team" haven even bothered to put up a "given up, gone home for the day, here's what ive got so far" release for DR17 of enlightenment in over a year, neither have they sent it off to a few people to build a stable or even remotely complete version other than DR16 to the repositories to create .deb/ .ebuild / .rpm files for the common distro's. given that linux is entirely fed by word of mouth in some ways due to the lacsadistic qualities of non-conformity, it definitely requires a propulsive momentum to help out, slapping the word alpha on the end and sending it out to the common people might just be enough to get a few excellent people to contribute code and not give it up as a lost cause." - Michael Guy

Wine - amd64 version for Ubuntu finally! - http://digg.com/linux_u...
"considering the difficulty i had with gentoo & amd64 last year when it was *new*, ubuntu is almost juvenile in it's difficulties. TBH, i havent really had it running more than a few days, so i might try running WoW in WINE now that it's an option. i could try loading WoW or Civ4 in cedega, but $60 for a vote + emulation that WINE does well, i don't see the benefit. heh, maybe iĺl see if adobe CS3 works in WINE, i won't hold my breath." - Michael Guy

100+ Ubuntu Tutorials and Growing Fast! - http://digg.com/linux_u...
"100 reasons why ubuntu is getting better. maybe. still, it's a great list of threads from ubuntu forum howto's that, while good, are written out almost verbatim from dozens of other linux forums that have jumped through the same hoops and foibles in getting their hardware and apps to work. i know i've read the same kind of material on the gentoo forums for sure, though popularity and a good kernel modules package helps a lot with getting those users who would give up pretty quickly once they realise how much work is involved going past apps as packages. yey for linux." - Michael Guy
