I think I'm in love. The Olympus EP-1 is almost erotically beautiful. I can't stop handling it. Can't wait to get the 50/1.4 on it. Too bad nothing reads the raw files yet.
Why does each new camera need a new RAW format requiring a 'driver update' ?
- Don Strickland
Geez. Kind of a problem if nothing reads RAW. Can't imagine shooting any other way.
- Karoli
No bundled app that can handle the RAW files? So you can at least have them for storage and go from there until ACR, etc. handle Olympus' RAW format...
- Holger Eilhard
The bundled app handles the ORF files, of course, but I really need Lightroom.
- Leo Laporte
I understand that, using LR myself! :-) I'm just suggesting that you could still shoot RAW and let the bundled app take care of the conversion to JPEG until Adobe/Apple are ready. Then you still have the RAW files to play with, not just JPEGs that came from the camera.
- Holger Eilhard
Okay but can I have the Canon 5D Mark II then :-)
- Richard Bitting
Exactly what I'm doing - and shooting RAW+JPEG. Still an awesome camera. (Keeping the 5D though!)
- Leo Laporte
Hope other manufacturers get a clue that we little rangefinder like cameras with interchangeable lenses.
- Jon Winters
I won't give up my Nikon any time soon but that surely is a beautiful- and traditional-looking camera.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I want this camera sooo bad. How are the HD videos on it?
- tomit
Hmmm... Guess you can do multi shots with a large card and put them together. I think most videos I've done were made up of clips shorter than that.
- tomit
Leo, there is an accessory VIEWfinder that attaches to the hotshoe. Not the same as a rangefinder but I wouldn't trade the EP-1's physical size for the optics necessary for a rangefinder. Very lustworthy bit of kit!
- Antonio Yon
It's definitely pretty sweet hardware. Rumor going around that 2nd version will be out end of year with a VF. Seems rather quick to me but possibly something to wait for. The current VF that attaches to the hotshoe is only accurate with their 17mm f/2.8 lens btw.
- ronin
I may pull the trigger on an EP-1, but I am hearing horror stories about the slow auto focus. Are you finding this a problem? Should I wait till version 2?
- tomit
Is this the one Dvorak sings about?
- Michael Foey
The specs for the E-P2 are out. What do you think? Are the improvements worth the extra $300? Luckily, the announcement came out the day was going to purchase the E-P1. Close call.
- Robert Eden
The E-P2 at least has a viewfinder - I think that alone would make it much superior.
- Brian Sullivan
I want to use one next to a Panasonic GF1 to see which I like better.
- tomit
Curious if Leo thinks the upgrade to the E-P2 is worth the extra cash!
- Robert Eden
Sarah have you had any luck posting to SquareSpace from Posterous? I'd like to cc my own website so I have an archive of all of my posts from twitter, tumblr, etc...
- Jude
good q Jude, I haven't tried it yet. Also with videos, even though going straight to SS would be awesome, I like them to be wrapped in the Vimeo player for consistency, so I still have to do it the hard way with videos, right? I swear these concepts shouldn't be so hard for me to wrap my head around.
- Sarah Lane
I see you aren't using Posterous for Twitter posts...do you intend to? I just don't like how Posterous tags everything back to their site.

Ok Sarah, the best solution I was able to come up with is cc my posts with a SS email. I don't have it post automatically so I'll have to manually clean them up but at least I'll have a record. All for now...

Leo, MCE Technologies has a adapter to replace the optical drive in the macbook pro with a hard drive. This would give you two drives in your MBP. The SSD and the orginal HD http://www.mcetech.com/optibay...

Leo, can you write up how you did the install of this drive and the swap of the superdrive for the 500g drive on one of your blogs somewhere?
- Alan Alpar
Leo may chime in here, but I'm pretty sure he picked the Corsair on the recommendation of Allyn Malventano and Ryan Shrout over at PC Perspective as a result of conversations with them on the PC Per podcast / TWiCH. Allyn's SSD guide is here: http://www.pcper.com/article... I think tech's evolved quite a bit in the past seven months or so since Leo did this upgrade, and the PC Per "Dream System" is currently spec'd with an Intel 80GB Intel X25M G2 http://www.pcper.com/hwlb....
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, i'm pretty sure you're correct that Leo chose that corsair based on Allyn's reco -- IIRC, the intel's are preferred, but are pricey, so Allyn reco's the corsair for just about the same performance for a lesser price.... and like you said that was a while ago and tech has evolved and prices have probably dropped as well
- Chris Heath
when system or program caches are too large to keep in memory, an SSD is a pretty reliable way to increase performance

I would laugh but I find this a little upsetting. This sort of (human) behaviour is now recognised as a clinical condition and is not very beneficial to theses cats. Judging from their activity they look very confined and obviously starving.
- Kevin J Hatton
This is fake. If you look closely you can see cats merging together and appearing out of impossible spaces. Likely a compositing of many, many shots of cats jumping around, with the women interacting with a very small number of cats.

@ Jemm Thanks for the back story, it does put a different reflection on it. I would not criticise her actions, as under those circumstances I have to confess that I might behave in a similar way. What is missing though is some sort of rational long term plan that is good for all. I hope that some assistance is available to help both the Cats and this woman, who obviously is expressing genuine compassion. For that, I applaud her.

Louis, thanks for the tip, but I don't see the point if it is already pretty easy to "follow" people for Google Reader users. Isn't this link as easy to give someone has a twitter account: http://www.google.com/reader...

Phil, my guidance is always to provide your content wherever people want to be. If people prefer Twitter, give them your content on Twitter. The new rules for conversation and marketing is be where they want you to be, not where you tell them to.
- Louis Gray
I like that Louis. I may quote you on that.

Another option is to use the tag feature. Each tag you have in Reader you can expose as a separate feed. That feed is also PubSubHubbub enabled. So you could only retweet when you apply that tag to an item.
- Brett Slatkin
Not sure if reader2twitter supports those tag feed URLs though.

Adobe Lightroom sets the default export to 240 dpi. Does anyone know why they use this resolution? It seems like most commercial printers ask for 300dpi files. Should we be exporting JPG files from LR in 300 dpi? Does it even matter? Anyone with more insight into this I?
DPI is irrelevant. Pixel count is all that's important... whether there are enough pixels to output with the desired detail at the desired physical dimensions.
- LogEx
DPI is relevant for display or printing. If it defaults to something lower than your printer's capability, it could be annoying.
- Cristo
Any application worth its salt will output to whatever DPI is needed. Commercial printers particularly know how to handle this, as long as there are enough pixels in the file.
- LogEx
Agreed, although I'm not convinced LR is worth its salt. :)
- Cristo
It seems like you can set it to whatever you'd like when you export. I'm just wondering what the logic behind the 240 dpi default is. I don't have a printer hooked up to this Mac. I'm wondering if I ought not be exporting at 300 dpi as most commercial printers seem to ask for that resolution or if it just doesn't matter. I've always done 240 dpi in the past and never had an image buyer complain about it.
- Thomas Hawk
What do you like better than LR Cristo?
- Thomas Hawk
Aperture. Of course, you're a real photographer, so I shouldn't say anything. :)
- Cristo
Thomas, what process is typically used for the prints they create from your photos (screened or continuous-tone)? 240 dpi is a curious default... if the output dimensions match the original dimensions, that's only good enough for high-grade news or a low-grade magazine. But if the images are typically going to be scaled down in physical dimension, it's probably fine for high quality output.
- LogEx
Cristo, what does Aperture do that LR doesn't. I tried Aperture years ago, back before it had vignette controls, but have always figured the Aperture vs. LR debate to be something akin to the Canon vs. Nikon debate, neither really demonstrably better than the other. What does Aperture do for you that LR will not?
- Thomas Hawk
LogEx, I have no idea the process. I find that usually they ask me for high res 300dpi files and I send them my JPGs that I've created using the LR default at 240dpi and nobody's ever said boo about it. They are super high res 21mp images from a Canon 5D M2 these days at least so I'm sure that the files are sufficient for the print job. Just not sure why LR defaults to the 240 dpi. Why doesn't LR default to 300 dpi for instance? does it even matter?
- Thomas Hawk
It doesn't matter. There are 21 megapixels, you can slice them up with however many you want per inch, it's just a convention. For output, those pixels will get divided up to make sense for the output device.
- LogEx
but I'm still not sure exactly why Adobe would set the default to 240dpi. pure randomness?
- Thomas Hawk
Kinda sure that a camera's default is 240dpi as an industry standard. I also remember reading somewhere that DPI is different to PPI (pixels per inch) and LPI (Lines per inch). I think it's not just Adobe but a function of many different technologies being smushed together
- Johnny Worthington
Thomas, Aperture is just generally much faster and has a better UI. LR has tighter integration with Photoshop, but not so much so that I miss anything with Aperture. Also, Aperture has more exporting options. Mainly it's the slowness that bothers me about Adobe products, but I still use Photoshop as my main pixel pusher because it's the most mature and featured.
- Cristo
Cristo, as a semi-Apple Fanboi it pains me to say this but... I like that I can edit my photos on my PC laptop or my iMac (via portable hard drive) using the one .lcart file. That's handy
- Johnny Worthington
Johnny, I don't use PCs anymore. :) Also, if their policy is the same as when I did, Adobe requires another license purchase to run their software on PCs and Macs.
- Cristo
I'm calling the software protection org or whatever it's called. The radio says I can get up to a million dollar reward for reporting software piracy. ;)
- Cristo
Cristo, I notice very little slowness using LR on my new MacBook Pro. It's actually pretty wicked fast. Any occasional freeze up I might get for a few seconds wouldn't be worth the learning curve to transition from LR to Aperture. In terms of exporting options, I always export to JPG so I'm not sure I get anything there either. I will say that I've been super happy with LR but I'm always open to considering other options if they can truly offer something compelling.
- Thomas Hawk
It's not about being same or just a bit better, it's being at least 10% better for me to consider it
- Johnny Worthington
I'm sure Adobe will find some way to use up those extra cpu cycles in future upgrades to their products. :)
- Cristo
Sometimes I will see stuff online though that totally blows me away. Amazing processing and I wonder what are *they* using or how are *they* doing it. Kelly Castro who works on the LR team consistently blows my mind. As does this guy. http://www.flickr.com/photos... I'd love to just sit and watch someone like him process photos for two weeks to see just how the hell he does what he does.
- Thomas Hawk
DPI relates to the amount of dots that are printed in a halftone by a printing press. This is because printing presses make up colours by printing the colour in four colour separations, C (Cyan), M (Magenta), Y (Yellow) and K (Black). Some printing presses can also print hi definition colour with two extra channels. In order to make any colour using the four colour process you need to...

- Travis Koger
Camera images represent the actual colour through pixels per inch and typically these are displayed on a screen using RGB (Red, Green Blue). Most screen (display) images are typically in 72dpi or 96dpi when converted to the dpi used for printing. The reason why TH you can supply your images to clients as 240dpi is because you are actually supplying them with an image say at around an A4...
- Travis Koger
Also, it depends on the printed medium. For example, newspaper runs at a much lower quality or dpi to say a magazine or coffee table book. This is because the presses printing the newspaper run at a much higher speed usually than a magazine type web press or sheet fed press and cannot accurately get the smaller/finer dots on to the page. This is why in a newspaper you can clearly see...
