Quite a while ago (and on a different blog, actually) I wrote a short blog on how to use the upcoming POWDER spec. The example was to create RDF triples expressing copyright information on Semantic Web logos. Lot has happened with POWDER since, and most of what I wrote in that blog is now technically outdated:-( So here is the updated example. The goal remains the same: a POWDER-aware processor should be able, following its nose, to find copyright information expressed in RDF for the various logos. - Tony Linde

WebKit is an open source web browser engine. WebKit is also the name of the Mac OS X system framework version of the engine that's used by Safari, Dashboard, Mail, and many other OS X applications. WebKit's HTML and JavaScript code began as a branch of the KHTML and KJS libraries from KDE. This website is also the home of S60's S60 WebKit development. - Tony Linde

Visualization is often employed as part of the simulation science pipeline—it's the window through which scientists examine their data for deriving new science, and the lens used to view modeling and discretization interactions within their simulations. We advocate that as a component of the simulation science pipeline, visualization must be explicitly considered as part of the validation and verification (V&V) process. In this article, the authors define V&V in the context of computational science, discuss the role of V&V in the scientific process, and present arguments for the need for verifiable visualization. - Tony Linde

As cosmology simulations help us understand the universe, we must understand how the results of different simulations vary. Visualization and modern graphics hardware can now provide the ability to visually explore these differences interactively. - Tony Linde

Web mashups are Web applications developed using contents and services available online. Despite rapidly increasing interest in mashups over the past two years, comprehensive development tools and frameworks are lacking, and in most cases mashing up a new application implies a significant manual programming effort. This article overviews current tools, frameworks, and trends that aim to facilitate mashup development. The authors use a set of characteristic dimensions to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of some representative approaches. - Tony Linde

Case studies include descriptions of systems that have been deployed within an organization, and are now being used within a production environment. Use cases include examples where an organization has built a prototype system, but it is not currently being used by business functions. - Tony Linde

It's great to hear that Marc Canter is writing a book, called 'How to build the Open Mesh'. He's been working for years on this vision with his product PeopleAggregator. He's just posted the four Appendices that conclude the book in his blog. It's a great overview of the major web platforms: Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft Mesh, and Facebook/MySpace. - Tony Linde

This document describes best practice recipes for publishing vocabularies or ontologies on the Web (in RDF Schema or OWL). The features of each recipe are described in detail, so that vocabulary designers may choose the recipe best suited to their needs. Each recipe introduces general principles and an example configuration for use with an Apache HTTP server (which may be adapted to other environments). The recipes are all designed to be consistent with the architecture of the Web as currently specified, although the associated example configurations have been kept intentionally simple. - Tony Linde

Here at DevKick we collect high-quality components, sort them into categories and present them on the site with regular updates. But once in a while, we flag our current state and present all components since the previous milestone in a handy blog post with direct links to each component’s home page, demo and downloads. So here is Milestone 01 - a handy collection of hand-picked, quality components sorted in framework/programming categories with the most popular component presented first in each category. Note that these components have been selected and tested during the last three months times to make sure each meets a certain quality criteria. Enjoy! - Tony Linde

OAuth, the open authorization protocol standard that will let users give limited access to their data to third party websites without giving away their passwords, crossed an important threshold tonight. All parties involved in building the spec have signed a covenant of non-assertion, meaning that OAuth can now be safely implemented anywhere without concern about Intellectual Property lawsuits. - Tony Linde

People who are creating the Semantic Web technologies such as RDF and RDFa do not propose a perfect system. The goal is to have a system which is using the nature of the Web (links). RDFa is a proposition to make Web friendly your data in your Web pages (html). People will certainly abuse it. It will break here and there, but the net effect is the creation of a network of hyperlinked data. The value and trust about data will be created by the community usages and the social network. The technology is just the support. - Tony Linde

I think that the reputation of forms as an untamable, ugly necessity has arisen for two reasons: * Form elements are derived from native operating system widgets, which makes them particularly difficult to style. * Forms are often critical to the function of a web site -- they're most often employed as search boxes, inquiry forms, or shopping cart checkouts -- and need to function as smoothly as possible in order to meet user expectations. However, it's still possible to incorporate both these points into designing a form tailored to the style of the rest of your site. This chapter, which is fresh from The Art and Science of CSS [2], will explore the ways in which you can design a great-looking form, and provide you with the necessary code, which we'll work through together. You can also download this article [3] as a PDF. - Tony Linde

Several posts here have described various applescripts that are useful for Microsoft Entourage. Writing good scripts is a skill, it is true (but it is one that many people can learn - it's not that hard). However, it isn't always necessary to write your own - many hundreds of scripts have been written already and most of them have been available to users for free. So, where do you find them all? - Tony Linde
