Jonathon - thanks for posting this! I wrote about why in this post http://beth.typepad.com/beths_b... but I like the conversation here and the fact we're intentional about sharing ideas.
- Beth Kanter
I joined because iit seemed a good additional channel to FIR and an interesting source of ideas and information and a means of taking part in the conversation.

I'm here mainly as an observer. I try to seek out "frontiers" on the web: places only very special people can reach. This is one of them: you are all probably nonprofit-minded AND you know Friendfeed. That results in this subset of 150 members.
- Meryn Stol
Jonathon .. do you want to do an experiment to increase our numbers or should be try to get people who already joined more engaged?
- Beth Kanter
It's a good question, B -- I remember your experiment that initially got people involved. What does the community think? Would you like to have more folks in the sand box or higher-quality sand castles? :)
- Jonathon D. Colman
I wanted to find out what other people were thinking/talking about
- Michelle Murrain
I joined shortly after the room got started. It's been an awesome addition to my current set of "rooms"... it's like another vein of data.
- Clay Newton
Jonathon - do you think that we focused on a deeper engagement, the numbers would follow? this is helpful as I'm working on the wearemedia module for community building.

Hi, nptechies! I just read Laura Norvig's post on Beth's Blog about this group, so I thought I drop a note. I'm here to meet others who are sharing resources about how to rock technology for social good, and love to learn from those who are in a similar position of being their org's internal evangelist for social media.
- Matt Koltermann
Hi Matt, thanks for the note. I am definitely in that position of being my org's internal evangelist. I manage the social media presence for the Resource Center http://nationalserviceresources.org/ and I originally joined this room to kind of eavesdrop and figure out who's who in nptech. Since then, I've had the privilege of meeting and talking to several of the folks here and I really...

I've been a member of this room for a few months. It's been rather quiet. I posted some links, have had a few conversations but it would be great if more were actively involved. I hope Laura's post kicks things up.

I just picked up a non-profit client in my new media consulting work. As I develop a social media strategy for them, I expect to be paying close attention to what people are saying in this group.

"You might also like to join the growing community in the FIR Friendfeed Room – http://friendfeed.com/fir – it’s private, just request a subscription. There are lots of links to resources, posts, etc that relate to show topics or that other members have found and shared"

"If you're using Opera, open the Directgov website in the browser, right click (Ctrl click for you Mac fans) in the Directgov Search box and select Create Search from the drop down. Enter a name and keyword (for example Directgov and dg) and save. You should then have Directgov as a search engine choice"

"An excellent list Dave. I think the only bit of hardware I’d add might be a portable mixer if you’re running a number of input streams/devices at any location. On the audio recording side, I’ve used the Zoom H4’s little brother, the H2 and it performs really well and appears as a USB drive when connected to your PC, so taking the recorded audio off for editing, etc is very easy. There’s lots of audio editing software to choose from and Audacity is a good choice, Wavepad is another one that gets mentioned quite a lot. Another very useful tool is Levelator http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelat... which evens out the sound levels across the whole recording very effectively. Just to move away from the ‘kit’ slightly, I think another important aspect of any reporting that you intend to do is to have a plan of what you want from it before you do it, rather than do it and then wonder what you can do with it. I don’t think this planning needs to be burdensome, but it should help you..."

"I set up an internally hosted Wordpress blog at work and it provides our primary communication tool for staff and volunteers, in place of a number of noticeboards, endless emails to ‘all staff’, printed documents in pigeonholes, circulation folders, etc. Anyone can register for an account and all are given Author rights by default so can post and comment. It’s available from any PC. It also serves as a basic intranet by using pages rather than posts to hold the internal telephone directory, useful phone numbers, copies of electronic newsletters, policy documents, etc , etc. The home page also serves as a gateway to all the other online services that are used, so it’s a portal as well. It’s been quickly taken up by everyone and is usually the first port of call for the volunteers when they come on shift, to see what’s new. It’s also good for new trainees, etc as they have one place they can go to for everything and don’t have to remember lots of different URL’s etc. The cost was (and..."

“Just a thought, is there any room in the already packed scope of FIR for an occasional segment on the non-profit sector? They may have different issues to the corporate world's and it might provide a forum for them to contribute.” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
I'm not competent to comment for the non-profit sector, but maybe some of this room's members might like to join in with the FIR community?

"Usefully, Akregator only shows me the RSS text unless I choose to read the complete story and if you view the site in Firefox with NoScript turned up full the only ad that comes through is the Amazon link, so it's not too bad at all"

How do you define "social media" as opposed to "social networking"? Have you noticed that the first term is becoming ubiquitous while the second term is not used much anymore?
I usually say that 'social networking' or 'social networks' are the 'private side' (facebook, linkedin, etc) , and 'social media' the 'public side' (digg, delicious, flickr, youtube, twitter, friendfeed)
- Alex Barredo
Great point, Laura, something I've been thinking about as I'm helping my organization write up a social media policy. I first learned the term "social media" from Beth K. and agree that "social network" and, esp. "social networking" are going by the wayside. Another question to throw on the heap: how do you refer to a place where one finds social media? A social media "presence"? An "outlet"? Something else altogether? God help us if it's "social media network" -- arrrrgh!
- Jonathon D. Colman
You mean like a place where an organization might bring in all their social media RSS feeds? How about a "social media hub"? Although I suppose that could be ambiguous also!
- Laura Norvig
I would interpret 'social media' as being either an individual item of or a collective noun for an information delivery technology or platform e.g a podcast, a blog, RSS, etc. and 'Social networking' is something that happens as a result of infornation sharing using social media
- Tony Molloy
I rather like danah boyd's definition of a social network site: We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The...

what's interesting to me is how people define the word 'media'. I was originally thinking of it as mediums that go beyond words so, photos, videos - hence flickr and youtube as 'social media'. There is also the sense of media in its common use as 'news'. However, there is another thread on FF, which I can't find now, that defines media as 'the medium in which people communicate' hence blogs, email, discussion groups are all social media.

This is a collaborative resource. Created by activists, for activists. We are discussing the basics of organizing loose groups of people - networks.

I implemented a simple in-house Wordpress blog on an old server as an experiment in creating an 'intranet' for the non-profit where I work, using posts for dynamic content and pages for the static stuff (internal phone list, etc), to hopefully provide a central, timely, information source and to see if the staff&volunteer team would get value from it. It got 60+ posts in the first month...
