1. Apple did better than expected in current quarter, so they wanted to get the bad news out of the way now. That way the stock will take the hit for Jobs being gone, then go up when they announce great financial results. Making it clear to everyone that the company will go on strongly without Jobs.
- Robert Scoble
He's sick and is going to take time off for treatment, and it can't wait?
- Ken Sheppardson
2. Someone threatened to leak the news this week anyway.
- Robert Scoble
But I don't know, why didn't they just hold the bad news until the financials came out? If the financials are bad, do you think they would have just blasted both bits of bad news out together?
- Robert Scoble
Ken: he could have disappeared for a week without anyone noticing. So that's not it.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe he's just not well. I know from family experience that this can (and should) override anything. Anyone suddenly feels as human and mortal as the next guy when given a really shitty piece of news.
- Steven Livingstone-Pérez
They could've released the news next Tuesday and buried the lead with the inauguration and all.
- Mark Trapp
Wouldn't it be considered a material fact they'd have to disclose in their earnings report, if was already planned? Perhaps earning are worse than expected, and they don't want a double whammy. I think one can make up all sorts of scenarios.
- Ken Sheppardson
i suspect #2 is closest to the truth. doctors, nurses, folks at work. could be he had an episode in public somewhere...
- MikeAmundsen
What financials are you talking about? The Proxy just came out a few days ago
- Matt Bennett
Robert: Why don't you just go back to the yogurt shop and ask?
- Ken Sheppardson
Probably a requirement under securities laws: timely disclosure of something material that might affect the share price. The CEO's temporary incapacity sure is something material.
- Neville Hobson
People have been saying he was sick like this for a while. Not sure if we would have believed a "leak" regardless. Right now i'm more in shock of Steve's letter last week. Either it was a lie or he got some bad news really suddenly. Regardless, have to face the future.
- David Bisset (sn)
I do think that Apple just released that because people over there knows that Steve needs some rest, the guy is sick and he needs to take care of himself, and then maybe after he is okay he would look after the company's business once again and I think your first idea might be the right one.
- Ahmed
I hope he's better and ready to by next years CES!
- Brett Nordquist
I think he's trying to be more open with his employees and customers. I think this is very representative of the nature of our 2.0 world. Knowledge of everything can be found so it's best not to lie and hide behind a mask of supposed truths. Best to just be honest!
- Dane Deasy
Brett: me too! Wishing him all the best.
- Robert Scoble
Dane: I don't think this is Steve being more open. Just read his message. Just as cryptic, only said what it needed to. Steve Jobs *IS* the Citizen Kane of Silicon Valley.
- David Bisset (sn)
btw - IMO, this is not going to get better (sorry to say). i suspect Jobs' condition is chronic and probably progressive. he's proly been putting off this kind of talk for quite some time. it could be a rough year for him and those close to him. and a bad sitch for the company, too. i really hope i'm wrong.
- MikeAmundsen
Option 2 seems to be the more plausible. Apple and Jobs have both been lying about this and attempting cover-ups for some time now.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Interesting that he'll be back in June--in time for announcing the next iPhone on stage?
- Ian Mikutel
There are no good ways to bring bad news. But openness is less bad than denial. Hold good thoughts for Steve's recovery.
- Michael Markman
Ian: that would make sense. Mess with the Palm Pre and Nokia N97 launches in June. Keep everyone slobbering over the next iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I think the 'June' return is just an arbitrary date which at this stage, could be either pessimistic or optimistic.
- Scot Mcphee
As accurate and truthful as Apple/Jobs have been about this topic... I doubt Jobs will be back at all.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
I think that he wants media to finally treat Apple as a "grown up" company and he plan to do this with shock therapy :)
- Hubert Taler
I think he is gone for good. Goldman indicated that he spoke to senior technology person who spoke to Steve who felt Steve was "deluded about his condition". That sounds bad for steve.
- themick171
from twhirl
What the hell does a senior technology person know about medical issues, though?
- Victor Ganata
@ michael dee - is that the same Goldman (from CNBC) who insisted just recently that Gizmodo were talking bollocks when they said Jobs' health was in serious decline, and that Jobs' health was 'totally fine' ???
- Patrick Jordan
It's that delusion about our conditions that keep us sane.
- Todd Hoff
Victor: as much as a yogurt store clerk.
- Robert Scoble
Wow, I too am surprised this news was leaked prior to the financials...odd. There's something fishy about that for sure
- Susan Beebe
@scobleizer in corporate/ DowJones land bad news MUST be reported as soon as known. Anything less gets you into Enron territory.
- Bankwatch
I agree with Ken Sheppardson and Neville Hobson. Apple knew the information and were reponsible by releasing it in a timely manner.
- Ontario Emperor
Of course, deliberately witholding critical information to manipulate the stock price is somethign people woudl scream about if any other company did it.
- Soulhuntre
from twhirl
@bankwatch makes a good point. But if Apple/Jobs knew this before the MacWorld announcement, and if they did and still put out the cokamamy story about hormone levels, Apple still should get a cursory look over by the SEC.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Jobs is not coming back, ever. The news today was just a "baby step" to that end.
- oregon_tony
As a "grown up" company Apple will fail. Their primary tool is the faux elitism of their user base and the "cool" factor that lets them overcharge for minor hardware upgrades. As soon as they grow up (expand) that will fade.
- Soulhuntre
I'm sure many companies would like to fail as well as Apple has! Yes, their stuff is pricey, but its demonstrably superior. I guess if you don't value your time you can pretend to save money using XP, or the now obsolete Vista, and if you still haven't learned your lesson then go have fun with Windows 7...
- Indio Apache
from twhirl
AAPL would have been crucified if they had waited. Mentioning the news now takes away the material disclosure & sharp stock sell off if the news would have been disclosed "next week". Waiting would have opened a mega can of worms in case anyone started selling their insider shares or stock plan shares. Now everyone gets the info at the same time to avoid the SEC trouble Apple had before although they passed the fire trials then.
- Roney Smith
yessir soulhuntre, Apple, number 103 in the Fortune 500, 8th most profitable tech company... sounds pretty grown up to most grown ups...
- Indio Apache
from twhirl
Soulhuntre... Apple has always wisely resisted the temptation to grow too quickly, or address the least common denominator mass market. There are riches in niches, and Apple mines its niches well.
- LogEx
re: Mark VandenBerg - thats my thought too, that the earlier hormone announcement may at least get some SEC review.
- Bankwatch
@indio - depends on how your using the term of course. @logical - I agree... as a niche product / firm Apple excels but they have been increasingly tryign to go mainstream (sometimes well, sometimes badly). It will be interesting to watch.
- Soulhuntre
Hi Loic, I did it last night. The only problem is that my iPhone car charger no longer works. Not sure why. All apps I had are working.
- Julio F ~ @SocialJulio
had no problems. but also fail to see any benefits!!
- Paul Metcalfe
I think my battery "is" lasting longer after 2.1...
- oregon_tony
I lived in Neah Bay, WA when I was a kid many decades ago. Shi Shi beach was forbidden to humans because the Makah people thought it was the home of Bigfoot. I have a picture of myself as a kid standing under a giant cedar tree carving with a what is supposed to be a life sized carving of BF. It was probably 10 feet tall. This was many years before tourism hit the area. Now I think there is a paved road to Shi Shi beach.
- oregon_tony
I agree with Thomas' recommendations here. The one exception is the GPS. I really like that, but it, too, needs to be taken the next level with turn-by-turn directions. Battery life? Turn off the GPS and the 3G and you get better life. I'm also seeing that sometimes the battery just drains itself. I think it's due to some applications. Still trying to repeat that enough to be able to authoritatively write about it.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah it really is kind of sleazy the way they tout in TV commercials that the phone is cheaper, when in reality over the life of the contract, it's actually more expensive, particularly since there's no free text messaging. Speaking of which, what's up with companies doing unlimited data service but not throwing in the text messaging. That's pure profiteering right there as the text messages use almost no bandwidth and really are almost 100% profit in the pockets of the cell service providers.
- Alex Scoble
At the end of the day though, it's just a freakin' phone. Most people (90%) would be better off getting whatever free phone is available for AT&T through Verizon. Blackberry Curve anyone?
- Alex Scoble
Who is Alex Scoble and what has he done with Robert?
- Eric Schlissel
from twhirl
There's definitely something weird going on with battery drain. Sometimes my phone will be dead if left to sit overnight, other times it's practically fully charged.
- invariant - farewell FF
Why isn't there a voice guided turn-by-turn application already available? I read somewhere that in the iPhone SDK terms-of-acceptance, it says that you are not allowed to develop voice guided turn-by-turn. Is that true?
- oregon_tony
Interestingly none of those reasons apply in the UK. The monthly cost is the same (both data and voice/sms), but many more minutes & sms are thrown in now. The handset one-off price is much cheaper. O2 are doing deals to enable 2g iPhone owners to upgrade before the end of their 18 month contract. The O2 3G network is OK (not good, but OK), and the O2 Edge network is crap. Because network coverage is better, the phone does not need to work so hard, and so the battery issue is much less of a problem.
- Ian Fogg
I upgraded my iTouch and immediately noticed the poorer battery life on that device too. If I use wifi the device is lucky to last 2 days. If I turn that off and stick to my music/podcasts, I can get several days without needing a full charge. I also wonder how much extra power the different apps use. Games like Super Monkey Ball and Labyrinth and the NYTimes app, or Facebook or any of the others that rely on wifi/data connections? Think I'll stick to my Nokia E90. Cheaper with more benefits and software.
- Stephen Cropp
Ian - having upgraded last week I have found the battery performance disastrous. The 3g network in London is patchy to say the least. Power managment within the OS seems inefficient. Some form of activity monitor is required - there are times when you know that an app is running in the background and draining the battery yet you cannot confirm or control the process. The GPS without...
- Mark
Same with my Touch (2.0). Then again, I use the wi-fi quite alot at home. the games drain the hell out of my battery. Although Apple made fun of Task Manager in WM6, I'd much prefer it if there was one to use on my Touch.
- Roberto Bonini
I think i like my Nokia phone and will stick with it and not go crazy about iphone
- Vidya
I used my Blackberry (and now iPhone) as an alarm clock. My usual routine is to charge it every night if the battery is low enough. I'm pretty diligent with conditioning my batteries. Occasionally, I'll have to do an afternoon charge because I'll let it discharge well below 20%. I wonder if people are complaining about battery life because they have to charge it once per day? I keep bluetooth off, everything else is on. It seems to auto-switch WiFi off in standby and flips it back on when wakes up.
- Paul Reynolds
If you turn of the push feature, then you get much better battery life. I did it and now it much better. And here in Sweden the 3G / HSDPA network is quite good.
- Svartling
I had a ATT Samsung 3G phone for about a year prior to buying a 1st gen iPhone. The Samsung would also occasionally just drain the battery even in sleep mode. I suspected it was something to do with the 3G radio and its behavior in poor reception areas, but couldn't reliably reproduce the problem.
- Steve Wilhelm
Another theory on the 3G battery life is the radio power is cranked up right now to compensate for the weak coverage and it can be adjusted remotely by the carrier. I forgot to mention I turned "push" down to every 30 minutes.
- Paul Reynolds
Just switched over last week after about 7 yrs of BB devices. Certainly has "cool factor", form factor and UI, but BB still better for power user of basic email and phone services without the bells and whistles of iPhone. That said, I think iPhone is a worthwhile investment and good device to have to monitor what is happening with mobile devices and device convergence. Mobile commerce and communication will be important elements to many business strategies.
- Fred Neil
I'm very tempted by an unlocked 2nd hand gen 1 iPhone. Being tied to a carrier doesn't work for me no matter how compelling the device
- James Clarke
Well James, unlocking for a different carrier is great, but don't expect any good apps in the jailbroken installer. Nothing but stupid themes.
- Dennis Jackson
BOOOOO. But thanks. I'm waiting until my contract runs out and it's literally been killing me. At least this helps cool me down a bit.
- Sarah Perez
Sometimes it might help to 'get Bold' instead of following the wisdom of the crowds :)
- Mrinal Desai
Agreed. As I posted elsewhere, there is nothing compelling enough for me to spend an extra $30 per month. My beat up edge version works beautifully and mine was free!
- Brad Nickel
What bugs me is that everyone is saying to turn this feature off or that feature off to preserve battery. What's the point of having an iPhone 3G if you have to turn all the features that make it different from the original iPhone off? Hopefully Apple will work on better battery life. For now I'm sticking with the 1st gen.
- Dennis Jackson
Seriously, if you're worried about 3G battery life in your car, you might want to invest in a $20 car charge adapter for your $199 (or $299) phone.
- Ernie Oporto
I never turn3G off and no battery complaints here. I do uncheck the ask to join wifi option. Battery usually lasts all day. Sometimes I give it a little charge after getting home from work.
- Bob Blunk
I met the 12seconds.tv founder at the TechCrunch party. I only gave him 12 seconds of time to have a conversation. Yeah, we barely got past the "hello" stage. :-)
haha.. we've actually got a pretty decent 12second pitch I think. We were actually talking about something like TechCrunch's elevator pitch idea, but you only get 12 seconds :-). Don't know if someone has offered you an invite yet, but let me know if you want one. - Jacob (1 of the 12second Founders)
- Jacob Knobel
i just realized how awesome that'd be to meet him. I wonder how long before he would get sick of people running away from him after 12 seconds.
- Bartek Ciszkowski
Chris: I already read TechCrunch so didn't need a pitch. But, seriously, we talked about this service on our Photowalk on Friday. Consensus is that this might be interesting to watch. I will watch it once the hype dies down and see who uses it for what.
- Robert Scoble
I hope for his sake that nobody comes up with the idea of "11seconds.tv". Why waste an extra second?
- Jemm
Joni: I'm pretty sure we bought the domain name just in case :-)
- Jacob Knobel
Imran: 2 main ones and then me - I've been there from day 1, but I head up the tech side of things.
- Jacob Knobel
Not a bad idea if they can move the user base past the usual SV early adopters. Cool that you can upload from a cell phone. Another device agnostic platform - smart. Mobile is very early, but if they can keep up the business and make the audience grow, they could well position for future success/exit.
- Patricia
Wouldn't 12 seconds be in direct competition with Qik for mobile?
- Imran Hussain
from feedalizr
Robert: I agree -- it will be interesting. Like you, my first thought was, "Twelve seconds?" Jacob: great to see you pop in. If I'm you, nobody gets to work on the project if they can't reliably pitch it in 12 seconds. :-)
- Chris Baskind
I love 12 seconds. More fun than seesmic
- David Jacobs
Imran: Not really.. qik is live streaming.. you're specifically going there to watch an event, interview, or something else happening. We're more short updates. Updates vs events - not really the same thing. A few of us here have or had qik compatible phones and we love the service!
- Jacob Knobel
David: Glad you're enjoying it. On that note -- i don't even think we're in direct competition with Seesmic either - in the same way that traditional blogs aren't in competition with twitter. Rather, they compliment each other and serve different purposes.
- Jacob Knobel
MiniMage: i've been a light twitter user, had a friendfeed account for a while, but never really used it. Today has really made me aware of how cool this service actually is and I hope to be on it a lot more. There's something really cool about being able to start conversations (usually with Twitter) and continue them with people that otherwise would be pretty hard to get in contact with.
- Jacob Knobel
David: the feeling is mutual :) I've just started using my FriendFeed account today as well, and so far I'm loving the experience here. I'll give 12 seconds a try too, i think we had gotten 100 invites from you.
- Imran Hussain
from feedalizr
Oh you're so cleaver. I'm sure he's never had that happen before.
- James Tenniswood
I'd be very interested in 12second's pitch. I've been in web video probably longer than most people in the internet business because of the IP telecom engineering background, and doing a ton in entertainment now. It'd be very interesting to hear it.
- Patricia
Geoff: It's coming. It didn't make it into the feature set for launch, but we will be offering this feature at some point.
- Jacob Knobel
i'm totally with you, scoble...i have a really hard time imagining any kind of widespread appeal for a video service with such a huge restriction on it. even back when i had a phone that supported immediate video upload, my videos were short...but considerably longer than 12 seconds! i really don't get it at all... then again, twitter seemed silly to me at first too.
- Shawn C. Reed
hey robert... i'm the founder you didn't meet that night :) funny thing is I was waiting to have a conversation with you but you were being interviewed on camera and it was taking too long, so I split. ;) either way i'm totally stoked that this conversation is happening on FF. 12seconds is about video that's easy to make and easy to consume. It's about showing and telling your friends what's going on with you. That's it. Video should be accessible. Anything and anyone can be interesting for 12seconds...
- David Beach
Well, if they talked as fast in person as I usually do, you could have gotten the guy's life story in 10 seconds and had an extra 2 to wind down in! ;)
- Lucretia Pruitt
12seconds is a good idea, but where's the timeline? I want to see what everyone else is saying ...

Either that he's actually doing competitive analysis or he doesn't want to eat his own dogfood.

His phones run Windows Mobile. He says they are years behind the iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
Windows Mobile is behind everyone@scobleizer that is a fact for some time.Just ask Europeans whom they prefer, they are the edge!
- Roger Kondrat
Maybe *HP*' WM phones are behind the iPhone. I'd love to talk with HPguy and compare views. He may be right, but I doubt it.

My friend is a Senior product engineer at Motorola and he admits that when it comes to 'complete' mobile devices, there's nothing close to the iPhone and he didn't like saying it.

I wouldn't say they're as far behind at Palm, IMO
- Aaron Myers
I was shown the latest Windows Mobile phones at Microsoft and have the Samsung Blackjack II and the iPhone is the best by a long shot.

- Richard Binhammer
I set up my co-worker's iPhone; I spent more time than I truly had to with it and hated it. Why do you think it's better?
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
MiniMage the Web browser on other phones are nearly unusable. And the apps like maps are far ahead on iPhone. I will do a video review.
- Robert Scoble
Agree iPhone Google Maps is nicer, but it was hell Tweeting in Safari. No arrow keys, no drag to EOL. Hope your vid clues me in!

I'm going to finally upgrade my Flintstones cell phone. Torn btn Blackberry and iPhone. Function v FunTastic. Please tell me to go ahead and get the iPhone. :)

One of our sysadmins bought an iPhone last year. He hated it. He ended up returning it and getting a BlackBerry. I've set up several BBs, and I dislike them more than the iPhone. I want nothing between me and my Exchange server, and I want cut/copy/paste.

MiniMage Tweeting in Safari? Not on new iPhone. The clients like Twitterific or Twinkle are much better than twitter.com.

My last phone was a HP iPaq. Screen cracked for no apparent reason. Seriously, it was on the table uncracked one minute, and cracked the next. Got an iPhone now.
- Joel Falconer
gregory: what's missing is multi-touch interface. iPhone is single touch. But iPhone is ahead of everyone in implementing single-touch, so no pressure to go further, even though it's possible. It's interesting. I carry three, and sometimes four cell phones with me everywhere I go yet I always reach for the iPhone first. It's so much better than the others it isn't funny (at least for the Web).
- Robert Scoble
imran: well, the guy who was at my dad's BBQ is an exec at HP. He'd like to, but says that Microsoft's OS is years away from matching iPhone, and by then iPhone will go ahead again. It's a pretty deep indictment of how far Microsoft has to go to get even the OEM's excited about competing with iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
HP, on other hands, has access to markets that iPhone doesn't have access to. Translation: enterprise customers. This is why he said that RIM is doomed. He is seeing enterprises pull their RIM servers out and going with Microsoft's Windows Mobile instead. HP is well positioned there, even though iPhone has a nicer Web browser and better user experience.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: No wonder, Jobs was right when he said that the iPhone is years ahead of any other device. I realize now how true that was, when almost every mobile manufacturer is competing with the iPhone. Isn't HTC close to competing with the iPhone??
- Imran Hussain
Imran: not close, I hear, but, again, that's because they are hamstrung with Microsoft's Windows Mobile. How will Google's Android change the game? That's the big question for next year.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: definitely, but Apple surely would have something up its sleeve for next year as well, to counter attack Android. This is only going to get more interesting for us, as consumers ( and Bloggers ), it seems :)
- Imran Hussain
I'm sure Arrington would say HP Mobile is irrelevant similar to his comment about Nokia last week that browser wars meeting.
- oregon_tony
Tony: Arrington says lots of stuff to be bombastic and aggregate attention. There were lots of people there who said that Arrington was totally off his rocker when it comes to mobile devices.

yes, yes, yes. Nuclear, solar and wind all need to be explored much more deeply. We need more investment and more ability for entrepreneurial endeavors in these areas. There's a lack of leadership in the govt, business and society on this front. Big time...

let's keep in mind that electricity comes from some other energy source, e.g., 57% in the US comes from Coal.
- nate pagel
fission is bad (not so much for the risks as for costs and waste - however good the technology you may have, spent fuel stays radioactive for 1000s of years AND uranium is estimated to run out in 75 years). Coal, Oil - awfully bad. Natural gas - slightly less bad, but still not carbon neutral. Fotovoltaic solar - ok but panels last 20 years and are made of nasty stuff. Thermal solar (ie solar furnaces), wind turbines, tidal energy, geothermal, hydroelectric - good, smart, renewable and carbon neutral.
- dario
our power and transportation needs aren't going to be solved without engineers, what can we collectively do to make more engineers for the next 20 years?

We can create incentives for people to go into engineering fields. Make it a patriotic thing. Your helping to save America by becoming an engineer to help research how we can get out of this mess we're in.
- Jason Shultz
I think there are a lot of engineers in gestation - not sure they need an incentive.
- sedgewick
Engineering isn't the problem it's funding.
- Greg Folley
Time is the problem. It will take 20 years to get broad market acceptance of alternative energy
- Francine Hardaway
from twhirl
One thing we can do to encourage more folks to go into engineering is for the government to quit viewing science with suspicion. When the president of the US says things like "The courts not yet out on evolution." it just might tell kids that science is bad...
- Chrimmus Tad
While I would like for Solar and Nuclear to be the primary source of electricity, the fact is that we have lots and lots of cheap coal in the US and it will continue to be used extensively. So electric cars, in terms of polution, have to be viewed in terms of the source of their power. Which is usually coal. Now I'm not saying coal is eveil, but that is the source of our energy generation for the foreseeable future. At least until states become more comfortable with nuclear.
- Andrew
How long did it take for people to stop using horses? Very quickly when Ford came out with the Model T. It's about funding to build the production lines and nothing else matters. Remember the Liberty ships of WW2? Thousands were produced on VERY short notice. Same with the bombers and fighter planes. WW2 was only 4 years long for the U.S.!
- Greg Folley
Greg Folley is totally right. A massive public-private movement towards a Green Energy economy can happen with presidential leadership, and broad political agreement on the left and right. An Apollo program for Energy. Here's Saul Griffith's energy mix (what we need to build ) for 2033: http://wattzon.org/plan.... It calls for huge investments in Photo-Voltaic Solar, Solar Thermal, Wind, Geothermal and Nuclear (ideally breeder).
- Thor Muller
Forget about Apollo programs and government mandates: the company/companies that find alternative energies & vehicles more convenient & less expensive than oil will become INCREDIBLY wealthy: Rockefeller rich, Getty rich, Exxon rich. That is enough to get the job done. Just look at the VC market over the last 2 years and you can see that there are people with their eyes on the prize, and they will spend their money in a much more efficient fashion than even the cleverest bureaucrats.
- Nicholas Molnar

Alternative energy would be needed less if people would simply allow nuclear power stations to be built in the US.
- Daniel Spisak

please, no nuclear - Ukraine learned hard lessons for next millions years of nuclear decay; don't be stupid to learn this in own country from own experience; and after all, nuclear is not renewable.
- A.T.
silpol: Ukraine built a lot of crappy things. That plant was an abomination.
- Robert Scoble
I know this is a bit childish but back when I played SimCity 2000, I always put my Nuclear Plants on an island or so isolated it wasn't funny. I know a lot of people who do not mind having nuclear power, as long as it's not in there backyard. We have just has this debate in Australia last year and essentially all the science was ignored except for that very fear-filled emotion. Nuclear is, at this stage, a political issue and far from a science and safety based one.
- Johnny Worthington
I think the knee-jerk opposition to nuclear is starting to fade now, at last. Ten years from now, I'd like to see largely nuclear electricity, with cars and trucks running on E85 (gasoline replacement) and E95 (diesel replacement) or biodiesel. Plugin hybrids running on E85 would be great: electric for short journeys, then 1 gallon of gas for every 200 miles on long ones.
- James
A few interesting facts: US Navy has operated thousands of reactors without a single incident where radiation was released. Solar and wind production cost 7x more than cheap natural gas plants to build, but cost 100% less for fuel. Personally, I'm not sure any of this helps the climate change problem - or if it's even possible to fix that - BUT moving to nuclear/renewable will be an expensive investment that pays off as long as we don't sell our soul to corporations that will price gouge.
- Mike Seidle
I think biodiesel will win. You'd have to convince people to buy a car that costs more and is less convenient than just keeping their current ride. For electric cars to win you'd have to develop a charging standard that is as fast and convenient as filling up a petrol tank. You'd also need to work on the design of electric cars, Tesla=Lotus=cheap, nasty, weight-saving interior.
- Steven Cains
I think the real solution will be generational and require realignment of our city and highway systems. Google new urbanism for an example. Smaller cities, self-contained agriculture and businesses, connected by high speed networks and public transit.
- Andrew Leyden
here's the problem - what to do with the radioactive waste from nukes? we need cradle to cradle solutions. anything less is myopic.

I guess your sunroof is open, or your holding it close/out the window.

But why is there no turn-by-turn application in the app store? TomTom already demo it on the iPhone, but AT&T also has their service they sell for a monthly fee. Sounds like some backdoor dealing going on. The iPhone SDK has a clause prohibiting the creation of turn-by-turn applications.

see now if apple cared, they would have made the battery exchangable - then you could buy 2 batteries and always be ready to swap - that's what i did with my phone for when im on the train and stuff
It's at moments like this when I whip out Doc Searls' explanation of Steve Jobs' art written in 1997 and still 100 percent current today. http://www.scripting.com/davenet...
- Dave Winer
So let me apply it to the question you asked. It's not a phone it's art. You don't need a battery for art, much less a second battery. Shut up and admire it and shut up and did I say shut up? Shut up. Thank you.
- Dave Winer
Just use an external charger with AA batteries. You can get them from RS or Griffin. I use this one on trips all the time: http://bit.ly/4ARRCD
- Cartwright Reed
if apple cared, they would give a universal charger set with the iphone
- Varun Shenoy
True. I bet I'll need to carry one of those for my iPhone (Allen is refering to fact that I have a big huge external battery for my Nokia N95 so I can film for hours without it going down).
- Robert Scoble
check out wirelessinfo.com, we'll have comprehensive battery tests up soon
- Alfredo Padilla
@Scoble well when I have the money to buy three phones, much less the plans oh and the pockets to carry all that, that will be my solution
- Justin Yost
I thought I would be able to ditch my BB after hooking up Exchange support on the new iPhone. My BB could go for days without needing a charge, If I looked closely, I could probably see the battery gauge on the iPhone draining while I was in Google Maps tracking my movement in my car.
