Why is Twitter shutting down in 2012? - Steve Rubel
Plus it will have lots more (Google) Services added to it :-) - Martin Rix (Mrrix32)
@Steve I don't think it means Twitter is shutting down. I think it means Twitter will bar FriendFeed from using its feed ;-) - Rubin Sfadj
This is too kewl - Peter Dawson
Hilarious - may all come to pass before 2018. - Todd McKinney
Love it. But 2018? I'd except to be able to get Friend.com directly through the HUD in my flying car by then... Only silversurfers (like us) would still use "web browsers" in 2018. - Tony Ruscoe
Twitter feed not available? That may come to pass at 10:30. - Bill Bittner
And what's up with "low karma comments"? I thought the karma thing left us in the seventies... but yes, everything comes on cycles... - Alex von Halem

You've got the Google thing backwards :) - Paul Buchheit
Hey, I just noticed I'm in the screenshot. :D @Paul: ? What's backwards, where? - Voyagerfan5761
Actually, it missed one important thing - a HUGE ad, taking up the top half of the screen, for a substance that is just as effective as Viagra (which was banned in 2011). - Ontario Emperor
I think Paul's saying that in 2018 ff will own google - j1m
It's comforting that hitting monkeys will still be as popular in 2018 as they are now. - Ginger Makela Riker
One thing they got wrong: by 2012, Paul will have started his own country southwest of Alaska on an artificial island. It'll be called Free Festivusland, and it'll get the top-level domain “ff”. FriendFeed will then be http://ff/ — no dots or coms or nets or orgs. - Amit Patel
@Amit P. ROFL .. very funny - Steven Hodson
@Jason lol :D - Voyagerfan5761
I think the web will be voice and audio driven in 10 years, or at least it will be available. There's even some startup now that can sense nerve pulses to the vocal chords to know what you'll say before you actually say it. - Mike Reynolds
I think comments won't be replaced by nested commented, just like @ in twitter, many people like this. - terababy
Mike Reynolds, now I'm scared. Very scared. I'll get myself in trouble before I actually hear what I'm saying (rather than after). - Ontario Emperor
For some reason, the Facebook deal makes this future user interface look more likely. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Eirik Solheim
And why did the use of http://friendfeed.com just explode in Norway?
I too got a few new --followers-- subscribers lately. And I don't even actively use it :) (yet) - Tormod Haugen
The ability to add all Twitter followers to FriendFeed probably has a lot to do with it... Same here... - Fredrik Johnsen
twitter has gone too mainstream - the elite moved on in desperation ;-) - Magnus

Why night owls are cleverer and richer than people who get up early | Mail Online
"It has long been held that the early bird catches the worm. But it is the night owl that lasts the distance, research shows. It found that late risers tire less quickly than those who make a point of getting up at the crack of dawn. The study is likely to be embraced by anyone tired of being branded lazy for their love of a lie-in.And it adds to growing evidence that it is night owls that rule the roost. Previous studies have found that those who rise later tend to be both cleverer and richer than early birds. For the latest study, scientists pitted morning larks against night owls in a task designed to measure their reaction and attention times. During the experiment, the volunteers got up and went to bed at their usual times, with the larks tending to turn in four hours earlier than the owls. Both did similarly well at the task shortly after getting up. But ten hours into their day, it was the night owls that shone, being both quicker and more alert at the task, the journal Science reports." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet

Hey, its a noise filter! Sweet! - David Risley
Kevin: I was thinking a concept similar to this would be great just today. (Yeah, that's the ticket) Great work! Another thought is a tab where you can see only the comments and likes made by your friendfeed subscriptions. Not their posts, just their likes and comments. (I'm sure this may already exist, and I expect Lewis Gray at any time to bring me down to size and enlighten me :-) ) - Chris Reed
Kevin, will there be a directory of public rooms? - Mike Doeff
This is awesome! How do I change the icon for the room? I can't seem to find that under "Edit room settings." - Jason Chen
I was just thinking this AM that friendfeed needed something analogous to Flickr Groups and pools. cool. - bernie
Woohoo! I'd love to be able to specify where my imported items show up ... like my personal photos and Gmail status updates to these particular rooms, and my blog to my public feed, etc. - Ocean
<?php echo "Jason Chen's question about the icon and Mike Doeff's query about a directory..."; ?> - Voyagerfan5761
Darick, that's on our wishlist too :) - Paul Buchheit
Desperately needs a room browser! - Jeremy Toeman
I wish items in rooms were shared as usual unless specifically hidden (unless the room is private). The rooms mostly correspond to topics, and that's great for active content discovery, but without the usual sharing my friends don't get to discuss the content with me. Passive content discovery is one of FF's big strengths, but the current opt-in model of rooms doesn't help. And, you know, while discussing Obama with the enthusiasts in Obamamania is nice, I want to discuss stuff with my friends. - j1m
+1 for that, pretty please. (Super-Hide should have a "everything in this room" option, naturally.) I think that's a much bigger deal than a room browser. A room browser will have trouble scaling, but "which rooms are my friends active in" would be a very friendfeedy way to navigate the space. - ⓞnor

"However, Mr. Angry Overreaction Man decided that he now had a problem with me. He confronted me, demanding my camera. Of course, I refused. He got in my face and started threatening me, telling me that I cannot take his photo without his permission. I told him that yes, in fact, I can. He then walked up and bumped into me, trying to act tough. I told him that one more touch and I would call the police. Of course, he didn’t like that very much, and at that point told me that if I put his picture on the internet, he would call his laywer. I assured him that his photo would be on the internet" - Paul Buchheit

Awesome. I think he deserves to be a new meme. Not only put him up on the internet, but make prints and post them all over the place, make tshirts, videos, ytmnd animations, and on and on and on. - Bill Bittner

FriendFeed can has search - Paul Buchheit
Awesome! - Ross Miller
Works great. When one clicks on advanced search, please keep the current query in the box though. (E.g. someone just may want to switch from "friends" to "everyone" but keep the same query.) Quote search would be nice too, it seems to be ignored right now. Also nice you offer an feed for results, though it kind of takes the fun out of screenscraping :) - Philipp Lenssen

Man, you know what's funny? Yesterday night I posted about how Friendfeed *so* needed to get filtering and search - 24h later, here it is! I am delighted! http://blog.webreakstuff.com/2008... - Fred Oliveira
Search is great and will make a big difference. There is still a great need for filtering as well. When I say filtering I mean service filtering, This would help with service redundancy. - Turker Keskinpala

FriendFeed has consistently been moving up my bookmark heiarchy. First, it was in a folder in my links bar. Today I moved it out of a folder and into the links bar as a single link (which is a very exclusive club.) Soon, it may even be made my home page! And all this within 24 hours! - Bill Bittner
Chris, Firefox has an option to "Show my windows and tabs from last time". I wish that were the default. I used to kill -9 it to get that behavior (because I didn't notice the option either). Eventually someone told me about the option... - Paul Buchheit

I have the mobile verision of FF (http://friendfeed.com/embed...) so I can make the page any width and wrap, and I put in the Outlook browser. I have a wide monitor and usually have my inbox on the right side. Now I have FF on the right side, and click to my inbox when mail comes in. However, I haven't noticed if the feed will auto-refresh. - Bill Bittner
Looks like it not longer auto-refreshes under Safari 3.1. - Steve Rubel

If there are any devs still listening to this thread, I'd like to suggest a universal search box that's available on every page, whether it's everyone, a specific person's feed, or even just one item. The single-item pages are missing a search box right now, and there's no link to the search page in the header. The same kind of box as is available elsewhere (the short one on the right) would be perfect. - Voyagerfan5761
becoming dependent on the search feature with sticky search and other gm scripts, i really really REALLY need a hide feature in search results please. plus agreed on the search box everywhere - use an additional dropdown for where to search. ;) - Nicole Simon
What would you want the hide feature to do there? - Aviv
I use the search feature to work in batches, but it is then when i decide that for example I really do not need to see your tweets. now I have to go to the normal screen and try to find that there, as your personal page does not have the hide feature either (why not btw?) - Nicole Simon

Now you can use your Google Account to log into any site that supports OpenID - http://reddit.com/goto...
I am a little worried about phishing though. And why does Google keep forcing me to login? I'm already logged into Gmail -- they should just ask if I want to give that ID to app X. - Paul Buchheit
I like the idea in theory; but in practice it could be exploited. Not to gain access to your Google account but to collect data / phish / etc. I wonder if Google will react to this app. Not that any of the other OpenID providers couldn't do the same thing; but whoever (or is it whomever?) that wrote this app has no real credibility (I'm assuming this isn't Google created) - Benjamin Golub
I like it - I've been waiting for OpenID to work with a google login (rather than just a site address) before building it into the project I'm working on (as a hobby). That, coupled with Google App Engine means that there's a whole load of framework and login code that I'm not going to have to write. Keep it up, big G - Slippy "WildBeard" Lane
isn't that openid for google accounts created by googler ryan barrett? - huixing
yes, but if half the world starts using that as their openid url he'll go over his quota and it will stop working - Adewale Oshineye

I just randomly decided to check the 'Spam' folder in my yahoo mail and was shocked at how many legitimate emails were going there (LinkedIn emails, for example). Looks like it's time to switch away from yahoo mail, even as a tertiary/mailing list email address...
You're STILL using Yahoo Mail?! - Paul Buchheit
Yeah, sheesh, Dan. Haven't you ever heard of Hotmail or AOL Mail? I heard they're a lot better! ;) - Adam Lasnik
I am having the same problem. Many legitimate mail are going in the spam folder. I already decided to move away from Yahoo. We need reliability from computer services. Yahoo! Mail? Oy! Just the annoying tagline alone is enough to keep me from using it. Couple that with the graphical ads and annoying interface... Gmail FTW! - Voyagerfan5761
I use Yahoo mail as secondary account and it has a bad start-up time. When you click too fast -- and all the big banner ads constantly want to be loaded -- it has hiccups which require you to restart the app. Very, very slow. Gmail, on the other hand, has also gotten slower when it comes to opening the apps and quickly clicking on the first new mail in your inbox (which often takes a... more... - Philipp Lenssen
@Paul: "as a *tertiary/mailing list* email address"; I've been too lazy to find all the places where I've signed up with my yahoo email and change them to a Gmail one. I, of course, absolutely love Gmail—my undisputed first love when it comes to email. (Would this be an inappropriate place to ask if anyone can get me a black Gmail t-shirt (size medium)? :P) - Dan Hsiao

I was pushing hard for an API in their Google Group, so this is good, good, good, news. - Adam Posey
ask them about a stand alone app!!! - Anthony Farrior
When I talked to Bret today he mentioned that they want to see what outside developers will do with the API - I don't think FF will develop its own desktop apps - Frederic
I fully expect Adobe Air apps to come out of these APIs, and all kinds of crazy widgets. - Adam Posey
If I hadn't decided to quit doing dev I would be following this news very closely - ah well will just have to wait for a good non AIR Windows app come out for it - Steven Hodson
+1 for wanting a FF AIR app that can just hang out on my desktop and keep me up-to-date. - Charles Hudson
Unlike Twitter, which has very simple text messages, FF has rich messages with photos, videos, links, comments, etc. You'd have to replicate large parts of a browser to make a standalone app. So maybe Mozilla Prism is the way to go. - Amit Patel

One of the things that I think Google really got right was creating a culture and atmosphere that works for both men and women (or at least I believe they did -- perhaps a female Googler can chime in). The kind of aggression that you hear about other places (such as Ballmer's chair throwing) were unimaginable. I can only remember one incident where someone threw something in anger, and he was immediately fired. - Paul Buchheit
I interviewed a couple Google women engineers about this very subject. Their interviews and portraits and going to be posted on NCWIT's site once their redesign is complete, but here's a sneak peek: http://docs.google.com/Doc... - Ginger Makela Riker

Includes links to lots of informative material. I never realized Oracle, Postgresql and DB2 all use different locking models! - Sanjeev Singh
I have no doubt that PostgreSQL is nice, but for me, the UI was the main reason I picked MySQL. Things like "\dt" vs. "show tables" made me dislike Postgres. The popularity matters too. I might be using {Free,Net,Open}BSD instead of Linux for technical reasons, but I like the GNU command line options better than the traditional Unix ones, and Linux is more popular, so I use Linux. - Amit Patel
We use mysql too. But there are some really glaring bugs, like the fact that group commit is broken in the latest "stable" release (5.x). We tried the full text search feature (which has been in there for years now) and it was incredibly buggy (both performance and correctness), - Sanjeev Singh
I use mysql always (except during initial development when I like to stick with sqlite because it's easier). This can be difficult because most of my work is with Django and those people LOVE PostgreSQL for some reason. I'm just used to MySQL. Table-Based Layout Is The Next Big Thing - http://simonwillison.net/2008...
The anti-table people are always good for a laugh. - Paul Buchheit
I've always been an advocate of table-less design, but as the second commenter notes: "CSS tables are a display property - a design expediency - not a semantic property." The current way of floating or positioning is just too flaky - Glenn Slaven
Yeah, floats are a disaster. Tables aren't my first choice, but they're usually my second or third choice. - Paul Buchheit
This looks very useful, once it's supported of course. - Voyagerfan5761
Tableless/float layouts are only a pain because of poor support (*cough*IE double float margin bugs, etc*cough*). This will be a good step once supported but I imagine will still be a good while before not needing hacks and alternative methods - brendan
Of course IE. What other major browser has trouble with standards-based CSS? :P - Voyagerfan5761
My rule is, if using a table make the code less complex and more browser compatible, then use a table. I use them a lot. - James Prudente
Frankly, I find table-based layouts disgusting. Turn off the formatting, say view it in a browser that renders the HTML with no styling, and it might not look so good... I like the fact that making layouts strictly with CSS and using semantic markup for the page makes them look great in any browser I've managed to test, whether graphical or text-only. - Voyagerfan5761
Should I have stopped using tables in my layouts at some point in the past then? - Slippy "WildBeard" Lane

But their alternative work schedule sounds interesting, as do the conference pass payments. - Mustafa K. Isik
