There’s a stereotype that black people are lazy. I don’t know if that’s true, but I know white people went all the way to Africa to get out of doing work. - http://silas216.tumblr.com/post...
"Four large explosions on a fuel barge in Mobile, Alabama could be felt from miles away in Spanish Fort and Daphne, Alabama, over 10 miles away across the river, according to local reports. The first blast occurred on a natural gas barge on the east side of Mobile River around 8:30 pm local time. Officials told Fox 10 News that there were no fatalities although some crew members did report burn injuries. The first explosion was followed shortly by three more blasts. A fourth explosion was reported by Fox 10 news reporter Lenise Ligon amidst scanner chatter amongst firemen that one of the barges may have hundreds of gallons of gasoline still on board. Authorities are reported to have requested a one-mile evacuation zone around the shipyard. Initial reports indicated that the explosions came"

#boston The Miranda discussion shows just how much America's cowardice and bare fear have cost us. We traded our Constitution for safety and now we discover in Boston, we have neither.... #drones#cispa#gitmo
IMO its not really a discussion. It is just an exception that most of us didn't know existed...I think it makes sense because any terrorist/attacker/whatever you want to call the person shouldn't be able to just say "i want my lawyer" if there is still a risk of more attacks.
- Chris Topher
that ticking time bomb justifies Gitmo and waterboarding and 100 other reprehensible acts that nullify our Constitution BUT Aurora and Newton and Boston show us its not been a good trade - we are not safe and we have no rights #Faustian#cispa#drones
- WarLord
Fascinating question: If Miranda thing is to look for more "ticking time bombs", How come BPD ended lockdown and every person in Boston was out in the street celebrating? #targetsforthirdbomb
- WarLord
I think there's some distance between interrogation before Miranda and waterboarding.
- Heather
Philosophically Constittutionally NO I beg to differ. We've lost our way and we are'nt even safer for teh trade off
- WarLord
But this public safety exception has existed since 1986 (New York v. Quarles). Also, all the Miranda Rights is the protection from evidence gathered under questioning being used in court.

Good point Johnny, the Miranda Rights have nothing to do with the Constitution or granting/taking away Constitutional rights.
- Chris Topher
Sure and Cispa is justified and waterboarding because of you know public safety. Except that Miranda is based on Innocent until proven guilty and based on coerced testimony and self incriminaton basis is constitution
- WarLord
It protects a function OF the Constitution but is not a specific element of it
- Johnny
from iPhone
But its all good because because luckily all this giving up rights has made us safer.. Right? #ci
- WarLord
An easy question to ask if you're not looking for an answer
- Johnny
from iPhone
And Johnny how does the one differ from the other? We happily give up a deeply embedded right for an illusion that such will make us safe and secure - see airport groping
- WarLord
sophistry Johnny, easy question is why did we as a country allow it to happen? #Soeasilyled
- WarLord
There is a specific distinction between "Are we safer?" and "Is this an acceptable exception to the Miranda Rights ruling in the function of policing". One is highly subjective and often charged with immediate emotion, one requires learned discussion and lengthy evaluation. So which one are you asking?
- Johnny
from iPhone
That's simpler to answer, because what was exactly lacking iaftermath of a bomb throwing shoot out was that rational discussion of rights v safety. We had calls for classification as an enemy combatant and forcible questioning...by Senators. Of course if we are not a criminal or terroroist why would we object to questioning or searches or peering into your mail or inbox..it is for our safety after all #cispa
- WarLord
My understanding is that they don't have to read you your Miranda rights, but then they lose the ability to use your testimony as evidence. In this case they have so much evidence that the larger security issues are more important than making their case better. Though I don't understand how he can't have a lawyer.
- Todd Hoff
To be honest, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that they got the wrong guy. It's not like they haven't made that mistake in the past. This is why we actually still have to have a trial and why we can't just hang him by the neck until he's dead on live TV.
- Victor Ganata
No court is going to accept self incrimination from anyone high on painkillers no matter what "Miranda" might say. As a practical matter the US better have a deep well structured body of evidence that makes the brother bomber case. Obviously MIT killing, car jacking, and kidnapping put this guy away forever anyway or get him a needle but it's solving the bombing that everyone is taking victory lap
- WarLord
Not to minimize deaths or start a tragic pissing contest, but it seriously blows my mind that the West, TX explosion possibly killed almost 12x more people and injured about just as many as the Boston Marathon bombings, yet the media coverage seems so drastically disproportionate.
at least that's what it looks like to many of us ppl living in Texas.

Industrial accidents don't have a narrative of evil
- Johnny
from iPhone
Reading about how few times the plant was inspected, how they didn't have a plan or have any safeguards for handling ammonium nitrate explosions when they had 270 tons of it, and how a school and nursing home were within the blast radius, I find it difficult to write this off as simply an unfortunate accident that couldn't have been prevented. I'm not implying malice, just neglect.
- Victor Ganata
The news stations still need ratings, and as Johnny pointed out, industrial accidents don't get attention when there are manhunts and car-chases and evil foreigners to demonize.
- Bren
from iPhone
who are you going to be afraid of, when it's just(!) an accident? media needs an enemy and Boston provides it.
- ani
That will take investigation and analysis. Interviewing an industrial chemist isn't as gripping as the former wrestling coach of a terrorist the subject of a manhunt. I would also put forward that conducting that interview with the chemist would draw criticism as people want CNN there when new developments occur
- Johnny
from iPhone
Is there a manhunt? No. Is it a whodunnit? No. Is there suspense and people with armor and guns? No. That's why.
- Betsy #TeamMonique
(Yes, it's a whodunnit, but it's the kind that ends with a hearing or a trial years from now and nobody gets charged.)
- Betsy #TeamMonique
The irony is that we now know who (probably) did it, and how they did it in the Boston Marathon case (although we're still waiting on the why.) We know none of these things in the West, TX case.
- Victor Ganata
As someone moderately well versed in my city's zoning laws, I was surprised that the fertilizer factory and the apartments and nursing homes were all so closely co-located.
- Brian Johns
I do want to know more about the West, TX explosion and it's too bad that it isn't getting the attention it deserves. But as someone in MA, I'm constantly worried about what's happening. In Texas it was an individual event, in MA it's on-going.
