Facebook proves how lame it is – steals from Twitter and FriendFeed - http://www.inquisitr.com/17793...
Yahoo! Buzz
Truly lame - Shevonne
lol - you could make a case for a lot of services stealing off each other. If it's a good idea and adds to the user experience, it would be stupid not to. What's lame is to become defensive over a service. Competition is good. - Shawn Farner
@Shawn to a point I can agree with you but the addition of 'Like' to Facebook is a blatant rip-off. If they had taken the idea and made it better something or did it differently then I would have no problem with it but in this case ... LAME! - Steven Hodson
@Steven - I am happy to see Like added. God knows I've looked for it a million times previously - Dave Hodson
What gets me is the implementation on Facebook is almost identical to FriendFeed - Kevin L
No one was jumping all over Strands for using similar features. The difference is, the party in question is Facebook and it is trendy to crap on Facebook. I don't even think it matters - Facebook is a closed off network and FriendFeed is relatively open. If Facebook implements an "everyone" feed, then you can start to worry. - Shawn Farner
Amen, Shawn. - Admiral Anika
I have decided, I'll never 'Like' on Facebook - Varun Mahajan
I agree... I think sites can and should add the features that add value to their site. FF was an evolutionary step from sites before it, many features it has are elsewhere. I think that to chastise FB for these would mean to support Amazon's One-Click patent... - felix from Disqus
How lame was it when Microsoft copied Apple? Not very lame in retrospect. There's another way of looking at it though; leaders need followers. or imitation bla, bla, bla. I used the like feature yesterday without thinking it was new. I'm so used to doing it here, I didn't think about it. There's a huge difference between what's posted here, and what's posted on Facebook. Here, "like" my family pictures. I don't think so! - Michael Fidler
Or are we finding that these social platforms are beginning to merge in function and capabilities? - Robert Worstell
Mark Zuckerberg never ever felt ashamed for 'stealing ideas'. The thing is: ethics never made anyone a billionaire :-) - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
@ Burak that is absolutely correct. - Jamelle
didn't friendfeed borrow facebook's newsfeed idea to begin with? - Travis Parsons
@Travis yup, as did just about every other social networking site. most of this stuff is incredibly easy to duplicate. - Adam Ostrow
Is it really lame to improve your product? Come on and stop being fanboys. - Clay Newton
@Clay - I am not a Facebook or anything else fanboy and improving one's product is one thing but at least have some kind of originality - is that so much to expect from companies living off of VC money and paper valuations? - Steven Hodson
@Burak .. you are absolutely correct which is rather disappointing really - Steven Hodson
I don't even see how the way Facebook has implemented the like feature even adds to their service. Items I like don't even show up in my feed for my followers to see. - Kevin Whalen from BuddyFeed
I don't think Facebook should be underestimated. People love it and actually don't care whether bla bla has done it before.Well it's disappointing of course that these things happen but what counts in the end is who implements it better i guess. - Burcu Kaptan

Aw - thanks Jeff! It ended up SO ultra long, I am afraid people won't read it LOL - Mona Nomura
I would be convinced if I lived in an area with 3G coverage. And I did read the whole thing ;-). - asiriusgeek
To be frank, asiriusgeek, I've only used the 3G network once. Only been on WiFi. :) - Mona Nomura
I would switch, but... AT&T sucks here. One tower to my north and none to the south (all roaming). Verizon it is. :'( - Zach Flauaus
I'm not an early adopter, and was kinda-sorta forced (haha) into the 3G when my RAZR (yes, you read that correctly) kicked the bucket. Not only have I never looked back, but I've become one of Those People--you know: the ones who won't shut up about how awesome it is. Because it is that awesome. (And long? Ha! You are clearly spending too much time around those 140-character types.) - colleen wainwright
i can't imagine not having my iphone and don't see anything else even close. just hardware and software quality alone is way ahead of recent blackberry releases. add in the app store and nobody can touch this for a while.. - Travis Parsons

David Risley
I'm sorry - Obama just doesn't understand what caused this economic downturn. And that misunderstanding can make things worse.
David, everything I'm reading indicates *no one* fully understands what caused this economic downturn. If the economists can't agree on it, then I would certainly not expect a presidential nominee pretend to do so. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
David: Agreed. :( He also blamed the deficit on W., which he shouldn't have done... - Mona Nomura
So... what did cause it? - Johnny Worthington
I think a key ingredient for the economic crisis was due to greed by many of the financial firms. Remember that they make money from transactions. By offering sub-prime loans to anyone, there's potential to make fast money in short term while taking on very high risk. - imabonehead
It took YEARS for us to reach this breaking point. Our country was in horrible debt long before George W. - Mona Nomura
I would have to agree with Tina. - Mathew™ one of a kind
Not true. Things are clarifying and we have a general understanding of the 'why'. Question is: what are we going to do about it. - Mona Nomura
And you do, David? - Alexander Carlill
good times > easy credit > people buy houses they can't afford (+energy price spike) > can't make payments > loan defaults > cdo defaults > unexpected cds exposure > capital shortages in financial institutions > financial institution bankruptcy > global deleveraging > hard credit > bad times - Travis Parsons
FactCheck on what caused it: http://www.factcheck.org/electio... (Summarized at bottom under The Real Deal). - Alix Whitmire
We can't even agree in friendfeed on what or who caused it and you want Obama to know this? - Alex Scoble
@Mona - there was a budget surplus when W took office.... - JA Castillo
Well, if FriendFeed can't figure it out, clearly the problem has no solution :) - Soulhuntre from twhirl
There's no single cause; there's multiple causes by many entities. - imabonehead
More to the point, if FF can't agree on it, how is a politician supposed to tell us what we will all want to hear? :) - Soulhuntre from twhirl
They're right. We should give Obama a pass on this one because it's really hard. - Mistletoe Glen
I don't think either of these men understand anything of relative importance and I'm saddened that this year's ballot won't have a qualified presidential candidate. That's my political comment for this month. - Bwana ☠
@Alex .. if I heard Obama correctly, he said he's going to run economic decisions by other countries first to make sure it's something they agree with. I need to review that statement, but if that's what he said, he's not presidential material. - Mattb4rd
And unfortunately, American automobiles are not advanced enough to be fuel efficient. The government is what's controlling the number of hybrid / electric cars in this country. So for Obama to say he's going to restrict the number of imports, doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about... :( - Mona Nomura
one of the disturbing facts of politics: presidents take heat/credit for improving the economy, and they're total input to the matter is very little - clarke thomas
@Travis - Great summary :) - mattpovey
Didn't see the debate but it seems to me that politicians have a small number of choices. 1) Blame the banks. 2) Blame consumers (voters) for taking up too much credit. 2) Blame govt. for failing to regulate to prevent 1 and 2. Of those, as a citizen, 1, 2 and 3 are all true. For a politician, 2 is untouchable during an election, 1 is a no brainer and 3 is a battle to show it was the executive\congress (delete according to affiliation). - mattpovey
Sen. Obama says he wants Energy independence yet fails to see the vast amount of resources we have here and the jobs, that US. Energy production would create. = Fail - Paul W. Swansen

In Arizona we can vote by mail. - Kevin Bondelli
AFAIK, all states have a "vote by mail" option. I've been doing it for years in WA. - Rochelle
I like to vote by mail (absentee ballot) so we can sit on the couch, drink some tea and review the ballot measures and candidates together, google stuff, run back to the couch and then call it a day! No stupid lines, parking hassles, etc. - Susan Beebe
Going to figure out how to vote by mail in NJ, that's a great idea. - Sally Church
Rochelle. Not all states allow no-excuse vote by mail. There are about 20 that require you to have a specific reason why you need an absentee ballot. Though Rah, I am pretty sure GA has no-excuse vote-by-mail. - Kevin Bondelli
That's ridiculous. You think they'd be happy to get voters voting, regardless of method. Do they allow "I have a really busy schedule" as an excuse? - Rochelle
Heck, Susan, we used to do that at the polling place. Of course they won't let us vote there anymore. ;) - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
FYI here is the page on the Georgia SOS website where you can request a mail ballot. http://sos.georgia.gov/electio... - Kevin Bondelli

Anthony Citrano
Today's bailout FAIL = a resounding victory for the People and for a free market. Short term pain will bring long term gain.
Breadlines are coming and I'll personally blame people like you. Thanks! You just turned off the credit tap. That sounds wonderful on paper, but now people with excellent credit won't be able to buy cars, houses, or businesses on credit. What happens then? Poor people get laid off by the millions. Congrats, you are celebrating on the backs of the working suckers who will now get laid off. - Robert Scoble
Agreed. - David Risley
I'm not buying into depression fear. Glad to see this fail as it stands. Hoping to see the government continue to help smooth the market via negotiated buyouts. See WaMu and Wachovia. And Wells Fargo is still in a buying mood too. - AJ Kohn
2nd. It's going to be ugly and painful, but its looking more and more unlikely that even 700B would be enough to stop the train we're all on. - Jim Goldstein
Here in the UK, a second bank has just been nationalised. We seem hell bent on privatising profits and socialising debt. Sad - PaulJohnson
i hate to use the analogy but a chainsaw was used where a scalpel was needed - adolfo foronda
The bailout bill would not have been a good idea. - Michael Forian
@Robert Scoble: You sound like Bush. - Eric P
Gregory, I think you're right. A lot of Americans were dead against this bailout, and the politicians--even a good many who thought it was a good idea--didn't want to vote for it. - Steve Lowe
You are a dunce. - S Adler from twhirl
The bailout seems unfair, but I don't feel qualified to know whether or not it is good or bad, in general, for it to have failed. I do feel worried, though. - felix
Eric: i sat down with some smart economists last week who told me what's going on. Whatever. The market agrees with me. So, let's meet in six months and see the damage. I hope I still have a job. If not, I'm coming over and sleeping on your couch, OK? - Robert Scoble
I don't think--at least I hope--it won't be as bad as the worst estimates, but given that the "free market" (which isn't and has never been free) has generally screwed ordinary folks since Adam Smith, I think the only people who really want to see this fail are well-off Social Darwinists with more money than morals. - Steve Lowe
I have no business commenting on this. That is, of course, an excuse to comment here. I agree with Scoble. What the US needs is tighter controls & better oversight of its lenders & investors. A bailout would've given the government the right to be the controlling or overseeing body with less harm. - Vijay
Back to Cash Economy. - Santa CW™
Too bad this won't be a short term pain if things keep going the way they are. We are quickly heading towards our bank system failing and if that happens, not only will our country head into another depression but many other countries around the world will also plunge into economic hell. - Mathew™ one of a kind
I greatly doubt that banks will not do loans anymore, for that is the only way that banks make money. Now, granted, the banks are not going to be giving them out like they are candy on Halloween to ever ghoul and goblin that comes to the door, but they are still going to give out loans. The general public when they want a loan will have to show that they can afford the loan over the period of the loan itself, and that they have a real need for it. - Wizetux
"The market" is composed of the same people who created this mess, who are now selling off because they're not getting $700 billion of taxpayer money to line their pockets with. At this point I have no reason to trust any of the people talking doom and gloom. This is WMD's all over again. - Eric P
I take it Robert would have preferred I celebrate on the broken backs of the responsible American taxpayer? And Robert, you're not the only one who speaks with "smart economists" - and they don't all agree with you. Many of them think a functioning market requires that bad bets are punished. And where have you been on this issue? - Anthony Citrano
There needs to be some money invested back into the market otherwise we are going to see the next great depression. There will be no lending even for those with perfect credit. Unless they pass some sort of package, you will see the hugest FAIL yet! - David Ward
Anthony: well, we're being punished all right. Oh, well. Major shit is coming, I'm off to the store to buy some supplies. - Robert Scoble
Scobleizer, you don't have a y2k end of the world supply left over? - Simon May
Anthony: The pain will be far from short term unless some form of this bill is passed. They need to get back in their and come to an agreement. - David Ward
Robert, since you've decided to personalize this by blaming people like me, I didn't hear you using your soapbox to discourage the orgy of borrowing and spending your fellow citizens went on over the past seven years to warn them of calamity if it continued - (quite the opposite.) On the other hand, I have done so loudly, clearly and consistently - long suggesting Americans wake up and take some hard looks in the mirror. So, I'll blame people like you for any disaster that follows. - Anthony Citrano
Anthony: OK, that's fair. So, now that the blame is out of the way, what we gonna do? Just watch the whole country stop? Or, you gonna join with me to come up with solutions? Work the problem as it exists today, let's get away from the blame. - Robert Scoble
crazy times in Charlotte NC.. Wachovia is done.. there's no gas in the city.. not much of a victory for the people here - Travis Parsons
@Robert: *now* you want to get away from the blame? @David: that is NOT going to happen. I have talked with quite a few people on the Hill today. Let's all stop wishing and start realizing that you cannot legislate against gravity. Even if they *do* pass something, it's going to be window dressing / political cover for Election Day and will not make a palpable difference to the market. The problem we face is more than 40 times the size of the entire US GDP. So: </fun>. - Anthony Citrano
With you there Robert. Blame gets us nothing; what can we do to solve this - Aaron Krug
@Paul - "privatising profits and socialising debt." wow. that sums it up. - jeneane sessum
Amazing how "only bailout for exactly $700B -- or bust" are the only two options. Seriously? No other plans, options, or proposals to deal with the mess? We're playing right into their hands. - Ambar Pansari
The point is, the government is now there to do things like this. This is a democracy, is it not??? If the government passes a bailout, that goes against democracy. It is socialism. If they want to do it, then at least call a spade a spade. This country is moving further and further away from democracy, and the citizens accept it under the guise of safety and security. - Andru Edwards
So now that government intervention helped steamroll this situation, the solution is more government intervention at our expense? I agree w/your tweet 100 percent. - Bryan Saxton
@Ambar: even the full $700B is just spitting in the ocean. We have a $600 TRillion derivatives problem that is just beginning to come unraveled. Future versions of this bill won't matter, except to those seeking reelection. - Anthony Citrano
@Andru: I have no problem with sensible regulation - I am not a rabid free marketeer - but I do not believe the taxpayer should be forced to retroactively rescue people from bad gambles. It's unfair and immoral. Hard working Americans who made sensible decisions during aforesaid orgy should not be compelled by law to pay the bill. - Anthony Citrano
@Robert: as to "joining you" for "solutions" - I have been suggesting them publicly and privately for years. Unfortunately one part of the solution is the pain phase - which we are just entering - and it will be severe. Yes, we must ensure a safety net for those who will be truly derailed by this. To anyone serious about organizing public policy solutions to this, my email door is always open, because it goes well beyond a FriendFeed comment box. But I won't be holding my breath. - Anthony Citrano
I'm with Scoble on this one. It's understandable that the average taxpayer is enraged by this bailout. And yes, many financial institutions deserve to fail. Problem is, the innocent will suffer more than the guilty if congress just lets this play out with no intervention. - Howard Keziah
Howard - please at very least read what I wrote here. If you're ambitious, read what I (and many others way smarter than me) have written on it over the years. Do you really, really think Congress can fix this? Have you done the math? You know the problem is more than ten times the entire GDP of Planet Earth, right? - Anthony Citrano
Anthony - what is the worst-case scenario here, in your opinion? - Sean McBride
@Sean: the *worst* case (but NOT the most likely) is a collapse of the global finance house of cards, death of the dollar and fiat currencies, and a return to barter and intrinsics; absolute obliteration of American suburbia; epic global depression. [For a perspective on some of this, read James Howard Kunstler (someone who has been way ahead of the curve on these issues).] Tectonic... more... - Anthony Citrano
Again: where were most of you as this was unfolding over the past seven years? Oh, I remember: navel-gazing and encouraging the masses to buy the latest shiny object with their MasterCards, all while ignoring or deriding those of us who dared suggest we examine our way of life. Now you want us to pick up the tab. Sorry guys, but the faux-populist lectures - especially from this crowd - are a little hard to take. - Anthony Citrano
Well, I came onto this one way late, but it sure was fun reading it, even without nested comments. - Rick Powell

Should Palin step down?
Depends on what side you're on. -
1. Can she? 2. I think that would destroy the election for the republicans. They already seem kinda confused. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Hah! That's a loaded answer, JMS... But honestly I can't see it hurting either side if she steps down... and it might end up benefiting the country as a whole if she does (if McCain wins). - Fa La La La Lindsay
I think it would really weaken McCain if she did. But some conservatives think she should: http://article.nationalreview.com/... - josh neff, geek at large
If she flops in the debate she may have to. If she really dies does anyone think changing her out could actually boost McC? - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Doubt it will happen though - we'd be hearing "backroom buzz" about that already. - Capn' One Eye - adrift
No. She shoudln't it woudl be suicide. Similarly even though Biden is a horrible running mate all the rumors he wills tep down are just silly. Nothing, NOTHING woudl kill a presidential bid faster. - Soulhuntre from twhirl
If the mob got really loud about giving her the boot (tanked the debate) would that be a sign that McC is already doomed? - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Maybe, Capn'. She could snap people to reality, get them out of this "oh, she just like me" bull. Make them realize this chick is gonna be potentially running stuff - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
No way - every day she is there helps Obama - Dave Hodson
But she's just becoming more and more embarassing for the GOP, and she just seems like she would be SUCH a disaster if she became president. I think some undecideds may have watched this debate and thought, "McCain seems like he's really on the ball, maybe I could vote for him. But then there's Palin to worry about..." - Chrimmus Tad
Soulhuntre, why is Biden horrible? I prefer him to Palin by a very long shot - Sally Church
I predict a major palin fail next thursday, unless mccain campaign engineers some reason to cancel/postpone. - Travis Parsons
These comments are proving my point. It's hard to predict exactly what the effect would be. And different groups would view it in many different ways. Not black and white here. -
Biden is NUTS. He's kookoo crazy. But he's also smart and experienced and knows a ton about foreign policy. Palin is pretty and has difficulty stringing words together in a coherent manner. - Chrimmus Tad
I'm going with my initial gut feeling from four weeks ago, and saying that the Republicans already have this one in the bag. Doesn't match my personal choice this year. Palin very well may have been the nut flush that won this thing for the GOP, given how Americans just... are. The Republicans better hope that she gives them life, and not the river. - Julian
@Travis - but that would mean McC camp is hoping for another bank crisis. boo. - Capn' One Eye - adrift
She wraps up the religious base. People who like her based on personality, they won't pay attention to politics or debates. Supporters don't trust the media, so bad answers can always be spun as attacks by the media. Nothing she says in that debate will matter to them. She's staying. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
@capn'.. here is my favorite video lately (I just can't watch it enough): http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Travis Parsons

how could anyone vote for that? - Travis Parsons
Biden thought FDR was President and that we had television in 1929. How could anyone vote for that? - Dawn
As Governor of Alaska? - Chris Nixon
No, Chris, as woman, wife, mother, human being...she's not fit for any of it according to Obama supporters and the media. - Dawn
@Dawn: relax with your generalizations already. Palin is perfectly fit to being a woman (not that she has much choice in that matter), a wife, a mother, a human being. She is patently unfit to be the Vice-President, first in the line of succession for President, unless of course no training and no experience are to be considered virtues. I suppose Bush set that precedent. - Todd Harris
Tad: absolutely not. Who else is going to keep an eye out for Putin's big giant floating head in our airspace? - Steven Perez
The cool political observant in my says that she should, as she's clearly in over her head. The fierce Democrat in me say, hell no...she's the gift that keeps on giving. Even if she wasn't giving Obama points, just watching Republicans who just don't want to vote for a black man twist in the win explaining why Palin is the shit. - Admiral Anika
She can step down after Biden leaves her Tina Fey face and glasses on the debate floor. THEN she can return to the tundra to a ticker tape parade of you effed up, here's your indictments! - The Black Snob
How do the Democrats who won't vote for a white man explain themselves? As in, how do you feel about the black voters who will vote for Obama solely or mainly because he is black? - ComicList
Should Biden step down? Has he embarrassed Obama enough? - ComicList
No...If she steps down, McCain might be able to actually win. We don't want that. Trust me. - Alex Scoble
Charles, I think you confuse a shared understanding of experience for skin color. As in, I don't think they would vote for Alan Keys just because he's black. Just like many relate to Sarah Palin because her experience is similar to theirs. She shares values, beliefs, they get where she's coming from. The "because he's black" thing is really irritating. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Charles, that sounds an awful lot like ignorant, racist drivel. I don't know a single black person who is voting for Obama "solely or mainly because he is black." That's a disgusting stereotype that you should be totally ashamed for having ever formed. Shame on you. - Chrimmus Tad
It's curious that so many allege their opinion is that Palin is such a moron. I wonder what the basis is for such a silly conclusion? I think the truth is that many are really scared that a genuine person of principle might be promoted to such an important federal role. What does this say for the left? It says that their continued clutching for the elite is detached from REAL America. It says that their view of the average person is so low, unless they need their vote... - Trevor Carpenter
It passes judgement on every President of past, with less education than our Republican VP nomiee. Men like...Gorver Cleveland, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, Millard Fillmore, Zachary Taylor, and Andrew Jackson. - Trevor Carpenter
thank you charles, because i clearly remember president shirley chilsolm, president jesse jackson, president carol mosley braun & president al sharpton. we black people ONLY vote based on skin color. that's right. we don't think, we just react via melanin. - Admiral Anika
trevor...we heard her talk. - Admiral Anika
Faboo Mama, yeah, um, that's not a response. - Trevor Carpenter
yes, and you refered to people who lived in a time where reading books and traveling helped based their experiences. palin has shown disregard for that sort of thing. the GOP has does a wonderful job the past 40 years telling voters that knowledge is antithetical to having values, while the rest of us believe the two are not mutually exclusive. - Admiral Anika

Why social browsing as a startup idea needs to die - http://www.inquisitr.com/3982...
How about search as well, either regular or semantic... in fact, everything semantic should be taken off the table until someone shows a case where the cost of doing it is less than the value created. - Jason Carreira
Jason, there is a difference though: people use search, there's at least a potential market there, unlike social browsing which is limited at best - Duncan Riley
no press is bad press .. is that right? - Travis Parsons
There's a market there... it's just saturated by a $100 billion monopoly - Jason Carreira
agreed. social browsing is not a company. Its a feature in a service like FF - Capn' One Eye - adrift
Well, it needs to die just as much as "creating yet one more tech-centered blog". See what I mean ? - Xav
Agreed. Who browses anymore? - Kevin Gamble
Social browsing that requires too much effort needs to die, easy services like the newly public Socialbrowse need to be promoted. - Shawn Kirsch

based on the CBS interview of Palin... delaying would be a wise move. But I say no dice - let us see the truth. - Travis Parsons

FriendFeed Blog: New FriendFeed design updated
Best "FF Beta layout flip" post yet ;) - Daniel J. Pritchett
Nice! Much less mouse movement to get to the important stuf! - LogEx
Not a fan of the smaller width. 15 characters doesn't let things be descriptive, and the chopping off of letters for anything longer makes certain labels unreadable. - Mark Trapp
How did you find time to blog about something that JUST happened? - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
A little notice next time! =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Eric: Bret's LinkedIn profile says "Founder at FriendFeed" - Daniel J. Pritchett
Ooh, much better on the left! - DeWitt Clinton
Mark: yah, that has been the source of much discussion here. The horizontal real estate vs. more text issue is tough. Let us know how you feel after using it for a bit. - Bret Taylor
Note: "My Feed" is now "Me" - Hutch Carpenter
looks great :) - Travis Parsons
Good update, the left side is more natural for navigation - Steven Cains
Don't like it at all. Don't like the left-handed navigation and I don't like the return of underlines beneath user names (although I can easily get used to that). - Akiva Moskovitz
but still no links to My Comments/Likes, or count :( - Tim Hoeck
Ahhhh! Just when I got used to the right side.. - Shawn Farner
Hey thanks I just notice this ... coool!! - Susan Beebe
@Bret - can you text wrap in the left panel? - Hutch Carpenter
i've gotta agree with Akiva, not too keen on it am afraid. Back in 15 to explain why. - Zee.
See the light underline under links now - Hutch Carpenter
Shawn: sorry about the change. That was also a source of much debate, and we really appreciate the fact you took the time to try out (and get used to the Beta interface). The navigation on the right was causing enough people headaches, we are confident moving to the left is the right decision, but please let us know how you feel after using it for a bit. - Bret Taylor
I don't mind it on the left, but it's too small, most of the room names are cut off. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
I like it Bret... KEEEP.. (word wrap on groups, etc) - Susan Beebe
Should I switch to friendfeed beta - orionstarr
Bret: I wonder how much help the room icons are at this size. If you removed them, that'd give more space for room labels. Not to be a naysayer though: I love everything else about the switch. Left is a change, but it's for the best. Love the icons! - Mark Trapp
Its odd with the bar on the left after I've been used to it being on the left. But, unlike the Facebook beta this is actually good. - Mathew™ one of a kind
Whoa. This just happened like a few minutes ago. Nice. It's just the same thing but on the left, right? Yeah. Cool :) - Dustin
@Mark: good point. The icons were easily recognizable in our testing, but perhaps the tradeoff is not worth it given these space constraints. We will iterate on the room name truncation issue - if these first few minutes are any indication, that is the main issue we need to address before full deployment. - Bret Taylor
I second the "navigation bar is now too small". Definitely improvement on this is needed. - Cesar Cardoso
Bret, cool. Appreciate you looking at it again! Like I said, everything else is looking great. - Mark Trapp
I like a couple of things in the new beta: 1/ the Post interation; 2/ the links becoming more visible. Changing the navigation from right to left side is something that people will probably get used to. Anyway, I do think that you must do something about the listed Rooms whose names are not fitting in. - Alex Popescu
Bret: I love the beta and like the changes to the sidebar EXCEPT for which side it's on. Would love to have a preference. - Steve Ivy
Daniel J. Pritchett, noted. I guess sometimes you just don't know who your talking to. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
I would love to have a hide on that navigation sidebar if it stays on the left. Like the 'u' shortut for full-screen in Google Reader. It also feels a bit cluttered in the top left... maybe just because i'm not used to it yet. - nadim
Posted this in another thread, but figured I'd put it here as well: the one thing I really like, although it seems like it's too aggressive right now, is the segregation of "inactive rooms:" I guess once rooms become more and more popular, not having any posts in a day would make sense to qualify as inactive, but I consider some rooms on the list active, even if nobody posted in them today. But the concept is great. - Mark Trapp
Well, apart from freaking me out when I clicked refresh, I think it's going to take some getting used to having the nav bar on the left. Not a massive problem, though. Can I just add another vote for wrapping the room names. Having it cut off like that does NOT work. - Brad Brooks
I like the nav bar on the left, and I like the new post and search parts. I do miss the tabbiness of the navbar though. I think it would be nice to still have some of sort of background change indicating what part of the site you are on - me, groups, etc. Keep up the good work! - Robert Felty
Just noticed when you subscribe to someone now, it asks which list you want their feed in. ++ - Steven Cains
I think the content on a person's page is too narrow. With the navbar at the left, the user's info box at the right, there is plenty of room left in the middle for the main content, but it uses little more then half of it. - Peter
Actually, I really like this navbar on the left an a person's info box on the right, directly at the top of the page. With the older beta, it was stuck below the navbar items, and that was very distracting, being on someone else's page, and having my own things listed at the top. Now if Hao Chen does another rewrite on the user profile script, moving it to the right too, I'd be perfectly happy with this design (for now). - Peter
Prefer it on the right - Reading the stream is my primary objective and having the menu/filter etc on the left takes my focus away from this as I have to learn to skip over it. - Andy Davies
Peter: are you using Firefox 2 by any chance? We may have a rendering bug on profile pages that makes it narrow in FF 2. We are fixing now, but that may be the issue. - Bret Taylor
i like the new layout, but I think people are reacting to a couple visual things: 1. the vertical divider line/shadow is very strong, so you see it instead of the right pane. 2. the logo overlap treatment pulls the panes together a lot, making readability in the top left area hard. can you make it less dominant? - Michael Herf
totally agrees with Andy Davies : the ergonomy of reading is more important priority than the ergonomy of click. The navbar should be on the right side (no visual pollution on the area used for reading) - Oaksun
it is better to let user control which side it is - terababy
love it on the left - Noah Carter
Great update - Steve Chou
I also prefer the sidebar on the right. Giving the option to change it would be good. And now you can't expand the Rooms list without going directly to the all rooms view. mmm... - Alejandro
The gray dotted underline for user names looks a little too subtle on this laptop, but I think it's an interesting idea. Perhaps a little bit more contrast, though it depends on the screen settings I guess. It might also be helpful to have the same kind of link style for other links which are currently still unlinked, like the blog reference in a "posted at ..." message. - Philipp Lenssen
Loving the direction of the beta so far. I think the menus on the left is a lot more intuitive but currently could use to be a little wider. One idea for saving space might be utilizing the slide out/slide in functionality that is now available in google maps. That way it can be out of the way for those just browsing page by page etc. - Tsega Dinka
(narrow content) Bret, yes I'm using FF 2. I see it is fixed now. Thanks. - Peter
