I gotta admit that MS' MediaRoom UI is pretty damn slick. I'd always thought U-Verse was a joke until I visited the apartment of a female friend who has it. I wouldn't drop my blazing fast DOCSIS 3.0 for anything less than FiOS or some equivalent, but the set-top UI makes everything else you've ever used look positively outdated.
- LANjackal
Sky is also available on the Xbox through the Sky Player... not that I use it, don't like paying for TV.
- Travis Koger
I've been a digital cable subscriber for as long as I can recall and probably will be for the foreseeable future until I can get free/lower cost full 1080p + 5.1 channel surround streaming for the channels I watch ... guess how soon that's gonna happen? Not holding my breath. So I'm pretty excited about these developments
- LANjackal
from IM
"During the Microsoft keynote, Ballmer mentioned that customers of IPTV providers like AT&T U-Verse will be able to watch TV on Windows 7 PCs, but he glazed over the how. The how is Windows 7 Media Center -- according to the press release that is available after the jump -- and there's no special hardware like a tuner required. The when wasn't mentioned because it is dependent on the provider, but when they do upgrade to Mediaroom 2.0, Media Center fans will have access to all the same content as a set-top like HD and on-demand, which is something pretty cool."
- LANjackal
from Bookmarklet
I'd say this is pretty game changing. That means you'll have as many live video screens in your home as you have Windows 7 PCs, no extra hardware or software required.
- LANjackal
In the UK, Sky is already available in 7MC, shows up in the guide and everything. :)
- Travis Koger
I'm really hoping Virgin Media come on board with this in the UK too.
- Mark H
out of all the minifigs josh has made with this mold, this one is my favorite. he's quite tasty and very sticky (twss) and is yummy dipped in li hing powder.
- Trish Haley
Not sure if you have had this suggestion before, but you should make a solid minifig out of VEGEMITE! Now that would be FTW! ;) (although I am sure it would be a little salty)
- Travis Koger
This has become quite the all-day birthday snack. I might even be getting a bit sick. :p
- Josh Haley
OMG, you're dipping it in li hing mui powder on top of it all? No wonder you feel sick!
- Spidra Webster
Sean, if only I knew. This was delivered directly to me fresh and hot.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
changed my life forever...I will always go to the beach with a a few chubby buddies after porking myself up for those bosoms ~ and this image is most definitely going in the ol' spank bank

Remember ! I bring quality product to Friend Feed !:)
- Akiva Moskovitz
you know what would be funny: ok bear with me, if we blindfolded leather donut (you know the booby man) and...yeah fill in the blanks...something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- sofarsoShawn
Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.
- Peter Ghosh
Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.
- Sparky
i've been trying to formulate a comment for this for days, but i just...can't.
- joey
I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm thinking that eventually, it will have been hidden by every user on FriendFeed. It'll be the most hidden post in FriendFeed history.

I look at it and think, "Not again."

Just about the time you FF is getting some class .. Oh well we is what we is.
- Brent - Loving Life
I can't believe after all this time some diligent FF'er hasn't dug up the identities (I said "titties") of this bunch and invited them to join the service that made them famous. Mitchell Tsai, get to work!
- Sprague D
i think if you unlike and delete all your comments anna it'll go away, but hide in general would be nice too (this photo makes me smile every time it pops up so don't mind it)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
*sigh* This is never going away, is it? It's gonna end up like James Bond movies and Swedish meatballs - always existing in the same form. never diminshing, never forgotten. :( :( :(
- Steven Perez
from IM
It will go away, to be replaced with photoshops of the original. It's all part of the meme lifecycle.
- Sparky
I am too new on friendfeed to know anything about record comments.. I love gmail tho, puts all the comments in one threaded email and I can delete them all later in one shot or not if I choose..
- David Gross

well we should aim to beat the record.. i mean jeez there are tons of things that could be said about this.. like.. does it taste like chicken?
- ed fry
I'm gonna have nightmares now. thanks ed. ;)

- Rick Cogley
You can't close this thread. A lot of people say that this place is a Scoble-fest but, truly, it is this thread that is at the very heart of FriendFeed.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm officially going to proclaim that this is the FF equivalent of Goatse or FFoatse if you will. Lets all refer to it as that from this point forward.
- Mark Krynsky
Sparky has left 57 comments. The rest of you are slacking. Hop to it!
- Christopher Harley
Chrisitan just walked by and said "It's too early in the morning for Japanese titty licking." It's NEVER too early for Japanese titty licking.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
THIS is the first thing I see here this morning?
- l0ckergn0me
Chris, you just woke up? C'mon, man! It's 10:30!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I knew he would break eventually - it's fitting that it's on this thread *now to find out how to hide a thread once you've commented....*
- WorldofHiglet
As much as I am loathe to bump this post, I have to do it to say, You, sir, are a master. Well played, sir. Well played. This is why I take every opportunity to say, in my next life, I want to be Akiva. I've already called it! Don't anybody go getting any more ideas.
- ♥patricia♥
I, for one, refuse to "bump" posts...it's very unseemly...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I wish FF-search allowed to do GROUP BY -aggregations so I could COUNT(*) who are the biggest *bump*ers. :)
- Jemm
Makes me laugh everytime I see it. Such a happy yet silly scene by the sea.
- Toby Graham
There is nothing silly about it. This is serious business.
- Sparky
The more I see this, the more I like it. Not for the ironic nipple-licking, but because these kids are genuinely enjoying themselves. :) Carry on.
- felicious
This photo looks so much better in iPhone 3.0!#!~
- Akiva Moskovitz
Seriously dude. What do I have to do to get rid of this disgusting picture!? Doh! Now I've just pushed it back to the top... yuck, I'm so sickened.

Can't believe I never hit 'like' on this! Consider the situation rectumfied.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
Oops! I hope I didn't just bump this up again... ;-)
- Sprague D
It's just so refreshing to see genuine juvenile humour at work. These kids are no different from any other, I think it's a great happy image, given all the other shite happening in this world on a daily basis. For those that are too pompous and prudish, 'up yours with brass knobs'
- ImJustCreative
Wow. 666. Nice! Actually, the reason Asashoryu is getting a divorce ( http://ff.im/4T0UA ), is because he wants to spend time with this lot.
- Rick Cogley
To this day, the pic still comes back. Just like Herpes. :D
- Danny Minick
Although unlike herpes this photo is fun to share with friends.

You know, every time this pops up, since FF hides the middle of the comments of which there are 804 or so, I see Akiva say "I'm sorry." at the top. It makes me wonder about how some things are just not possible to apologize for!

the thing that strikes me about this (aside from the obvious) is after seeing this thing pop up like 35-40 times since March its just occurred to me that I don't have any (guy) friends that a) would lick my nipples b) would lick my nipples for a photograph. Maybe I should get out more...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I'm a little scared that I've this has gotten more than 800 comments and almost 200 likes over nearly five months and I still haven't clicked "Hide."

It's just a bit of fun. I mean watching how many comment, not the picture content (although I suspect that is all that was too!)
- Ian May
Allright, you guys ready to shoot "mirth and girth"?
- Rick Cogley
For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.
- Matthew DeVries
I found a way to get a Tit Theme, and it involves this picture.

Hmmm, where do you think they're from? My guess is Japan...
- sofarsoShawn
The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.
- Matthew DeVries
I forgot, also you're a very handsome guy(saw the wedding images), I don't understand why you don't like to share your face. Rochelle is a lucky lady.

Jimminy, it's an irrational phobia. No different than people who are afraid of heights, spiders, clowns, or Canada.

Akiva, now I'm LMAO at the fear of Canada. People are actually afraid of Canada, or just the fact they don't know if they're British or French?
- Jimminy Fuller
I don't think even Canadians know that difference.

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.
- Matthew DeVries
I think everyone who has participated in this thread has 'culled' themselves privately.

Who will win? Who ever develops platforms or apps that can harvest everyone of these services' real time search features into one spot. Facebook and Twitter are slowly becoming communication and information hubs. Who ever can mine that takes home the big diamond. I hereby copyright the next big buzz term for the web "Real-Time Search Aggregation"
- Johnny Worthington
Jesse: I'm curious if you are tempted to use your unfollow tool, now you are following so many people?
- Jim Connolly
Jim, no - I use Twitter different than most people though. I use it as a search platform, so those I actually follow are simply relationships I'm trying to build, not information I'm trying to follow. I get that through other means.
- Jesse Stay
As much as people make a fuss about Twitter Search, FriendFeed has shown it to be a pretty average option. I get better search results when searching Twitter on FriendFeed than I do with Twitter's own search engine.
- Paul Jacobson
Jesse: Yep, that makes sense to me. BTW: I hear your tool's pretty good - Kudos!!
- Jim Connolly
Thanks Jim! We try to do what we do well - it's one of many we offer, on multiple platforms.
- Jesse Stay
Louis: hahaha love the link back to Johnny. Ok Louis knows what he owns. For instance, I own super human filters http://www.google.com/search... Of which Louis is one and Jim is another. Johnny could be well on his way to being one of my super human filters... only time will tell. Perhpaps if he owned real time search aggregation....
- Mark Essel
Mark, I wouldn't say "Louis knows what he owns". That's not true. I found out the oddity because Johnny mentioned the string and I searched on Google. Pure chance. Great chance. But luck all the same.
- Louis Gray
Thomas, I don't think anybody has won, because no prize has been given yet. When visible real-time-search revenue starts flowing from Twitter or Facebook, we can declare a winner. :)

"Okay, I appreciate this isn’t going to be a very popular blogpost with some, but I said I was going to use this platform for my thoughts and these are my personal thoughts.. We’ve been talking about this a lot in the office and are now completely convinced that the RATM is no viral backlash, it’s a very clever piece of viral placement that is funded by Sony themselves. So lets look at the evidence."...

What does everyone think of all these points? A scam? Either way, the whole point was to get the Christmas Number 1 back from X-Factor which this post completely ignores.
- Kol Tregaskes
I also heard that the person behind the Facebook campaign is a hi-fi technician from Essex.
- Kol Tregaskes
The problem is that all musicians want to make money, so it's possible that it's a scam.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
The article is very well thought-out and well-written.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
3. It's a standard LinkedIn page with no updates. Mine would look like that if I hadn't added anything, so nothing special there. Besides, like I said he is supposed to be a hi-fi tech from Essex.
- Kol Tregaskes
6. Is that so unlikely? Perhaps there was a surge on the group.
- Kol Tregaskes
7. Would they be stupid enough to try it again?
- Kol Tregaskes
I think 8 is the best point he makes! If it was some outre, new avante-gard artist, it would be one thing, but RATM are fat-cat millionaires.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
10. Possibly, but I've not read anything else. But the fact that the quoted article is from the Metro, who make the Daily Mail - the trashy newspaper in the UK - doesn't really prove much.
- Kol Tregaskes
I tend to agree that it was all a scam, but actually I don't really care, it was important to me that anyone but F-Factor won. I don't care that both were Sony artists and I don't care that RATM were the ones chosen for the scam... I do however look forward to a new RATM album that will surely come out shortly. To further show that there was no technical loss by X-Factor, I understand that they still sold just as many albums as every other year even though they lost the battle.
- Prism Europe
I really don't care who won. I just enjoy listening to music, more than I give a fig who has got what position in some dubious selling league
- Ian May
When the UK chart was based on sales of 45's, it was only certain stores that were used, so that wasn't a true picture even back then.
- Ian May
Jeremy, sure but what does that matter? Why does that prove it's a scam and why does that matter? Prism, exactly. I don't really care, we got a better Xmas Number 1, simply as that. Bring it on for next year please. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I keep forgetting that you actually listen to the radio. That DOES make this a different discussion.

if it were another station, i would agree. but this is BBC we're talking about. probably one of the most heavily controlled radio stations in the world. some of the songs that have been banned on that radio station are laughable...
- Terry O'Fee
Terry, that is true but the DJs clearly don't agree with some of these bans too.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, No Prism and Travis are the same thing.

Still I would argue that the BBC plays a better mix of music than the average US Clear Channel controlled station - rotating three hour playlist is about all you get there. Pathetic.

"In initial Betanews tests involving our Comprehensive Relative Performance Index suite on the Windows 7 platform today, this incomplete rendering of a browser -- the latest version of a model that was in danger of becoming only half as fast as Mozilla Firefox -- blew right past not only Firefox but Apple Safari as well. And yes, it beat Google's fastest Chrome development build browser, by a score that's something more like a touchdown than a field goal. On our physical test machine running Windows 7, the Opera 10.5 pre-alpha scored a 24.52, meaning it delivered about 24-and-one-half times the overall JavaScript, rendering, and computational performance of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 running in Windows Vista (the slowest browser on the slowest platform we test, which we index at 1.00)."

I tested the other day, running PeopleBrowsr, a javascript heavy app, which runs very nicely in Chromium, and well in Safari or Firefox. Probably not up to daily-driver usability yet. While the JS handling is way faster, it seems that it should smooth the ops/sec. If I do a JS task, even if that is complex & slow on other browsers, it happens almost instantaneously in Opera. If I do a...

And if I wasn't clear above - if they can smooth out the processor utilization in Opera it's WAY faster than Chrome. WAY faster.

Not sure how only 2 points differences makes Opera WAY faster than Chrome. Which one of us are reading this graph the wrong way?
- Travis Koger
Not sure abotu the graph, but the usage testing was like night and day difference - with the cavea above.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
From my experience with Chrome and Opera 10 so far (the stable builds), Opera is faster when loading multiple tabs at once. Chrome sometimes almost freezes when loading several pages at once, it doesn't handle multiple network requests very well.

Wow and it actually looks great. Doesn't have fits with Flash either unlike Chrome/Safari.

FriendFeed for the time being is not going anywhere. For the past week the lack of information has troubled and angered me, especially in regards to the termination date for the service. Now, almost a week on, the lack of information now gives me comfort.
- Johnny Worthington
When ever you here about a take over of a car company or any business merger, the plans for both sides are well documented and everyone involved knows the road map ahead. So far, no one knows what will happen to friendfeed.com and I believe that is because either that hasn't been decided or there is no immediate plans to throw the switch.
- Johnny Worthington
Facebook either doesn't want it or simply doesn't care. They got the talent and that is what they were after. FriendFeed posed no real threat to them and a great majority double fisted the sites anyway. So, since it is not an issue to them... it's not an issue to them. The site can continue to function as normal, with pace of updates and servicing slowing as time moves forwards... but it's not going away.
- Johnny Worthington
It would be nice to get some form of notification but until told otherwise, it's business as usual. Even more so, if some form of monetization strategy is implemented, say with adds or even a premium subscription base, the FriendFeed service could not only continue long term but become a profitable venture. Now I'm not saying it's going to make Diddy-style dollars but Sanjya still eats well.
- Johnny Worthington
Am I naive? Probably. Do I have any basis for my prediction? None other than rampant fanboy love.... but I tell you what... on the morning of December 25th, 2009, I plan to make my post wishing you all a Merry Christmas, toast the FriendFeed team and enjoy the day with my family and friends, digital or otherwise...
- Johnny Worthington
Louis... I can never hope to drop science like you sir... but then again... I not only used the phrase 'Diddy-style Dollars' but threw in a 'double fisted' for good measure :P
- Johnny Worthington
When it's Christmas, there's cold weather involved - I'm not a fan of that!
- Drew
Lindsey, agreed, but what do they gain by not telling us that information if they know it? FriendFeed makes no money, no refunds need be paid and no customers are being hurt. In the cold hard truth, the team has cashed out and now have a bigger fish to fry. If they switch it off tomorrow, will you stop using Facebook because they now work there? No PR worries at all. It makes no sense for them to keep it quiet so, sense being the only thing I can go on, I must believe the information is not at hand.
- Johnny Worthington
So, in other words... no ice bergs ahead at this stage. That means, crew of the good ship FriendFeed, I'm gonna keep pushing this site hard, promoting it and the community like I have a heater strapped to the front of the boat.
- Johnny Worthington
Johnny, there is quite a bit of sense as to everyone keeping quiet about what is going to happen. Facebook have just bought themselves a competitive advantage and they are not about to give away that advantage by saying what it is that they will be doing now are they?
- Travis Koger

Physical Keyboard: I don't know what reviewers were complaining about, this is actually pretty damn good. The only major niggle I have with the Droid is that so far I can't figure out how to make it vibrate to notify me of incoming SMS when the handset is locked and the ring volume is silenced. If I don't figure that out I'm gonna miss a LOT of text messages at work, which is not good :/

All charged up! Despair's (my Droid's Bluetooth name) first night on the town. He's already texted one girl and called another from his Contacts, which is fully integrated with my Facebook account (profile, pics, email addresses, phone numbers). This last part is absolutely amazing. Wish us well, I'll tell you more tomorrow when we embark on a 16h bar crawl (no joke)
- LANjackal
WOW. I have never set a custom ringtone this easily in my life. 1)Drag and drop song into phone from Windows Explorer (where it shows up as removable disk). 2)Go to Music App, which automagically finds ALL songs on the phone, regardless of location 3)Select track 4)Select "Set as ringtone". DONE. A-mazing, especially for a Verizon device (walled garden anyone?)
- LANjackal
"...especially for a Verizon device (walled garden anyone?)" They would had to have fucked with normal Android functionality. Have you tried, "Ringdroid," I think it's called? -- for editing audio on the handset. Perhaps there's something better now.

- Christopher A Carr
... or we'll just get a new one? Handsets are salable dude.
- LANjackal
Speed: (because Chris Carr brought it up). The Droid is plenty fast. Speed is not an issue.
- LANjackal
Battery Life: Very good, but I'd bring my charger if I were going out of town for a weekend (I always do that anyway, so I don't consider than an issue)
- LANjackal
Browser: Faaaast. I don't miss the pinch multitouch capability reviewers have been bemoaning the lack of, since the high resolution means that 95% of pages are readable as is in the first place, and there's a handy zoom-in/zoom-out icon that pops up at the lower right of the screen
- LANjackal
UNPLEASANT SURPRISE: That charging cable that you think is a mini-USB cable? It's NOT. I don't WTF the port on the side of the Droid is, but it won't accept any other cable than the one that shipped with the device. Disappointing, but not a dealbreaker IMO
- LANjackal
Fancier ROM idea: If you wanna go for it, sure. However, my phone is one of those device (like my car) that I expect to just WORK, 100% of the time. Don't wanna risk bricking it, but if you wanna do that go right ahead.
- LANjackal
Contact management: This is simply the best implementation thereof you will ever come across, not only on phones but on ANY device. Full syncing of Google Contacts and your Facebook friends (all relevant fields, even job titles and pics from Facebook profiles), automatic duplicate entry handling, with search, email ... you name it. This is one thing the Droid beats everything else at. No competition.

Camera: It's not the best, but it'll do. Besides, cameras like those are merciful to those who aren't naturally photogenic like me.
- LANjackal
Audio quality: Angelic. I know this sounds like an overstatement, but wait till you hear it. The audio on this device is just stunning. Everything else you've ever heard will sound like static afterwards in comparison

Visual Voicemail is great, but if you have an active Wi-Fi connection it won't be able to sync. Which it tells you nicely. Perhaps Google Voice fixes that problem. Beginning to wish I had a GV account now. Oh well. Invite, anyone?
- LANjackal
That's only if you have a 450min plan. The one I have has VVM rolled in... I think. Billing info isn't very clear on that, I'll see what my first new bill looks like when it comes

VZW has the weird setup where feature prices vary BOTH by plan AND phone. For example, VZ Navigator is free on some phones but paid on others. I *think* Visual Voicemail's included with the data plan when you get a Droid
- LANjackal
More on battery life: Charging takes a while (1.5h from 50% to full). Definitely enough for overnight, but people who rely on fast charge times will be in for a surprise. I'm really anal about charging, so I don't find this an issue. Less "responsible" users (read: college girls) whose phones are permanently "about to die" will run into trouble :P
- LANjackal
Hmmm, not true mini-USB, slight disappointment. How loud are the ringtones and the call itself? Do you think the phone will feel weird with an extended battery? Do you experience any lag that has been reported in apps? Can't wait to have in hand next week!
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Lan: You want a GV invite? Think I still have one or tww. How do you like Stanford pounding the shit out of Oregon? Wow.
- Christopher A Carr
Why do you say it's not true mini-USB? That contradicts what I've been told by a Googler who's been using the phone since August.
- Glen, Bespectacled Elder
It may be a smaller USB connector than the "mini" one I'm used to. Phone ringtones are LOUD. So is the call volume. I don't know any phone that doesn't feel weird with an extended battery.
- LANjackal
from IM
Lag: bear in mind that you're dealing with a mini-computer that happens to be able to make calls, not a phone in the traditional sense. As with a PC, the more apps you run, the more lag you may notice (1 -2s sometimes, "missed" touches). In normal operation with mission critical apps though, there is no lag. I'd STRONGLY suggest Taskiller though, as the OS never seems to really kill...

Battery Life Report: During a drinking marathon today filled with heavy use of web browsing, FB app friend adding, taking (and uploading) pics, texting, email checking, calling, hopping on and off free Wi-Fi, etc. the Droid lasted *drumroooooooollllll* 11 HOURS. Terrible for a phone, but pretty good for what's essentially a pocket computer. Word to the wise: the car charging kit? Get it. An extra USB cable for charging at work is a pretty good call too

Correction about the USB connector. It's a micro-B one, NOT a min-B one, which is why the other cable I had wasn't working. So yes, it IS a standard USB cable. Sorry to have mislead anyone

UPDATE on Visual Voicemail: I checked with VZW today and it really does cost $2.99 extra per month. Thanks to Chris' Carr, though, I installed Google Voice, so I chucked VVM.

Bug: Google Navigation may forget to use the speakerphone at times. I think this happens if you attempt to navigate while the phone is in portrait orientation
- LANjackal

- Kevin Mohr
I read that it does, but so far I haven't sent anything that long so I haven't seen for myself
- LANjackal
Worried about the Droid's 11h battery life? 1) Get the car charger 2) Head over to Monoprice.com and get a micro-B USB 2.0 cable for your office for all of *gasp* <$3, shipping included. Then you'll be able to charge at home, in the car, and in the office.
- LANjackal
Wait, an extra fee for VVM? That's just as lame as the extra fee for VZW Navigator.
- Wirehead
Not if you were on a Premium plan like I was. VZ Navigator's free then. Unfortunately, Premium plans are unavailable for the Droid, so you have to drop down to a Nationwide Select plan and then tack on a data package. This keeps the service affordable, but it means that VVM's not included. Don't really get VZ's thinking behind this one, although they probably reason that anyone who's savvy enough can get Google Voice anyway while the "average" users will lose $36/year to VVM.

Droid lost 3G functionality this morning. How to restore: 1) With Droid still on, remove battery for 15 seconds 2) Replace battery 3) Turn Droid on. 3G should be restored
- LANjackal
from IM
Guess who got his Droid set up on the office Wi-Fi and VPN today? It took all of 3 minutes, no management approval and just a verbal request to the IT guy. Turns out he got a Droid himself, so he breezed through the setup and handed it back to me. So yeah, if you were worried about joining domain networks and whatnot, don't be - the Droid is ready for work
- LANjackal
OK so after a few weeks of use, several bugs have become apparent:
- LANjackal
1) This probably applies to all smartphones that can run multiple apps simultaneously, but active task management is a serious necessity if you're a power user. That means manually killing apps/processes that you aren't using to prevent your phone from becoming laggy. I recommend the Task Manager app
- LANjackal
2) Switching between Wi-Fi and 3G sometimes isn't seemless. The Droid will sometimes forget it's a 3G device when moving out of Wi-Fi coverage, and similarly not automatically connect to a familiar network when it's within range.
- LANjackal
3) The micro-B USB 2.0 port has become really loose over numerous plug-unplug cycles. It's now possible to plug the device in and have nothing happen because the connections aren't being made (This is solved by a little jiggling). To be fair, most USB ports weren't designed for this many plugging cycles, but for a device that needs as much charging as this you'd *hope* the port was a bit sturdier
- LANjackal
4) Phone ringtone volume sometimes goes out of whack. Solved by simply re-entering the relevant menu, which seems to "remind" the handset what level it should be at
- LANjackal
5) Plugging the phone into an HP docking station before booting the laptop will cause the laptop to fail to boot. I'm not sure whose fault this is.
- LANjackal
1) Contrary to what the SF Gate guy said in that article I'm too lazy to link to, Google Navigate IS SAFE to use in the boonies. Verizon's 3G coverage is beyond amazing, I traveled through some of the most sparsely populated regions in the country today with no problems. The phone lost the GPS signal a few times (regained within seconds) but never lost 3G coverage
- LANjackal
Another tip: turning the screen brightness down to the lowest level improved battery life a LOT
- LANjackal
So @LANjackal, around Google Navigate, are you saying there's a map for that? :-)
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I just set one up on Exchange. it's FAST. sadly no it was not my phone....I only had about 5 min to look at it.
- Mike Nencetti
So one of the funny things about the DROID's contact syncing with Facebook and Google is that you can't edit any contacts that exist in your Facebook friends list only. You have to add a new contact on the phone with the same name as the Facebook friend, after which the phone will automagically merge the two. I suspect the reason for this is that although the phone imports your Facebook friends into Google Contacts, it's only a 1-way street ...
- LANjackal
Therefore any changes made to a contact that exists only on FB would be reflected only on the phone and could be lost if something happened to the phone itself. The solution to this is obvious (import all FB friends into Google Contacts, treat them as immediately editable there), but for now that's how it is
- LANjackal
I actually lost your connection in FB Russ when I accidentally started an FB account using a different address.
- Travis Koger
The only thing that is not that great, you cannot set the privacy options on the FB post... although I know that it is technically public as it has come from FF which is not a private feed, but is it public within FB because of that.
- Travis Koger

Roberto, you can create the screencast and then download the video to your computer, or YouTube. As I said, it's more of a 'quick' solution, but very good at that.

"Barack Obama set some kind of record in the number (said to be 515) of campaign promises he made. As a natural result of this over-promising, he's probably established the record for promises broken. There's a video online lasting less than two minutes of a speech candidate Obama made, in which he promised the following things of his presidency: 1) making government open and transparent; 2) making it "impossible" for congressmen to slip in pork barrel projects; 3) making meetings where laws are written open to the public; 4) promising "no more secrecy"; 5) that the public would have five days to look at any bill before he signed it into law; and 6) saying "We will put every pork barrel project online." As you have observed, none of these promises has been kept. If we're to believe Goethe, we shouldn't be surprised."

While it is true that all politicians lie, I had HOPEd for more from Barack Obama for some reason. It's disappointing. I'm pretty sure I won't be voting for him the next time around. There is a whole lot to like about him, his politics and his programs -- and he's certainly better than Bush. But one thing he is not, is a man of his word.
- Thomas Hawk
TH, isn't it a little early to write him off as not a man of his word? Does he not have another three years to prove he is a man of his word?
- Travis Koger
Are the campaign promises really "broken" when his term is not over or even nearly over yet? It's not even 25% over yet! I think even Bush's approval rating at the end of his term was higher than the percent of Obama's term is done with!
- Robin
This makes me sad, because it means that the right-wing smear campaign machine is succeeding in "proving" Obama is a failure. Give him a little more time, please.
- Rene Wirtz
My question would go along with what Travis, Robin and Rene have said so far... Was all of that supposed to happen at 12:01 pm on January 20th? Did he promise that any of those things would take effect immediately, or would they take time to implement, time which no one really seems willing to give him? And as far as I know, you can find the behemoth of a health care bill online,...

Obama promised transparency and then gave us anything *but*. Why can't I get anyone from his staff to respond to my multiple emails about their censoring their flickr account or even respond to a formal FOIA request over the matter? There is more pork running through Congress right now than perhaps at any time in history. He allows it to happen. I thought GITMO was going to be shut down within 120 days or whatever the deal was. I thought Govt. suppressed photos of detainee abuse were going to be released.
- Thomas Hawk
Obama promised that *no one* who made less than $250,000 would see *any* increase in *any* of their taxes and the first thing he does is pass one of the most regressive taxes ever on an easy target, smokers -- who are statistically much more likely to be poor. He cites "national security" as a reason to hide secret laws being negotiated to strip away our rights to pander to Hollywood fatcats who have bankrolled him. http://boingboing.net/2009...
- Thomas Hawk
I'm not sure why anybody believed in him in the first place. Anybody who looked into his limited background could have seen it coming. This so-called health care bill is un-Constitutional to say the least.
- Spencer
@TH: just like with every other president he is going to fail on (a few of) his promises and surely you must see how much noise, static and friction the fringe is producing. As to him or the WH not replying to your inquiries about their Flickr account, I can only hope that that will not be your benchmark for Obama's performance.
- Rene Wirtz
Rene, the fact that they censor their flickr account (in violation at least of what would appear to another GAO Govt/Flickr agreement that I've seen that Sherpherd Johnson was able to obtain through another FOIA request) is just a more personal example of his lack of transparency to me. Obama promised us transparency in Govt and yet he fails to deliver that, not just in my own personal...

It's bad." That just shows how much out of step Obama is with his promise of transparency. I had HOPEd for more from him.

@TH: You cannot expect him to turn around and do a full 180 on everything that has been progressing since the previous administration and fulfil all his campaign promises. Obama took on a large job and I don't see him succeed in 4 years, but what he will achieve in 4 years is that he may swing the US onto the course upwards, out of the spiraling drop it is in. Undermining all this so...

WAAAA.... a politician told me something then didn't follow through fast enough. Wait until Year 3 then give me the list. Until then.. don't go whining about anything about him unless he starts WW3 or enslaves all the Republicans.
- CW™
Obama said that he wouldn't appoint anyone who had lobbied Congress in the past two years and then went and appointed William J. Lin an active Ratheon defense lobbyist to Deputy Secretary of Defense. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/washing... Further the administration won't provide a list of the people that they've given waivers to to violate this campaign promise. Nice transparency there.
- Thomas Hawk
From the Washington Post: "Lynn, however, lobbied the Pentagon on so many Raytheon projects -- acquisitions policy, space, intelligence and command and control, among others -- that it might be hard to find an area within the department that was untouched by his previous work." Was there really nobody else for the job but a lobbyist?
- Thomas Hawk
CW, why do you have to wait three years before talking about the promises that Obama is breaking? Is it less of a promise to break if he hires lobbyists to come work for him in the third year instead of the first year? How does that have to do with following through "fast enough"?
- Thomas Hawk
Why is the Obama administration keeping the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement secret? Is that what transparency looks like? Or is it more that the Hollywood fatcats who bankrolled him don't want people knowing what's in it so that we can organize and fight it effectively?
- Thomas Hawk
how depressing; my respect/regard for him has fallen from "yes we can" to, based on his time in office, " yeah you may be better than the alternative but UGhhh GAWD get it together!" cuz I still have hope, as lil as there may be
- sofarsoShawn
and hell yeah, where'd those mysterious record number of $500 donations come from which you can arguably say led to him winning the primary & ultimately the presidency
- sofarsoShawn
Things that don't fly with me. 1. Well of course he's breaking his promises *all* politicians break their promises. Obama was supposed to be different. He was supposed to represent HOPE in a better way to govern that included keeping your promises and transparency. 2, He's only been in office 1 year, it's too early to talk about the promises he's breaking. Either you break promises or...

You know what the real problem is? There is no law that punishes politicians for failing to keep their campaign promises if they are elected. If there was, then politicians wouldn't make any promises that they didn't intend or couldn't keep.
- April Russo (app103)
April, if that was the case then nothing would be done.. also what politician would make such a law then work their ass off to get the others to vote for it?
- CW™
Our founding forefathers should have shoved that in the constitution and spelled it all out way back then.
- April Russo (app103)
@TH you had hoped or you used to hope? wrt to current president of US, obviously
- A.T.
I had hoped that he'd be a different sort of president, a man of his word. It's not that hard a thing to do. If you say that you won't hire lobbyists in your administration, then just don't do it. If you say you are about transparency, then be transparent. Even if your opponents having information about your secret copyright treaty might do it in. Don't be beholden to Hollywood fat...

I like VS2010's new Repository Explorer, SVN appears to be working smoothly in it, even with what I thought was going to be an incompatible AnkhSVN plugin. No probs there. Mmm, didn't bring through Beyond Compare settings from VS2008.
You always could with AnkhSVN. Been doing that for a long time. But the Repo Explorer, I have just linked directly to SVN across the net and it came through perfectly.
- Travis Koger
Even has its own History Viewer. Not sure if it is better than AnkhSVN yet though.
- Travis Koger
Yeah. I knew about the VisualSVN guys. Didn't know about AnkhSVN tho. But sounds awesome.

I am using TortoiseSVN, VisualSVN Server and AnkhSVN in VS2008.
- Travis Koger
Travis, the VS2010 Repo Explorer, is that the one provided by AnkhSvn that's not working? You should also be able to use File -> Open -> Subversion Project.
- Sander Rijken
As far as the diff/merge settings are concerned, they are stored per VS instance so VS2008 can have a different one set than VS2010
- Sander Rijken
Sander, yeah actually I think it might be the AnkhSVN repo explorer rather than a built in one. There is also the open Subversion Project.
- Travis Koger
It's definitely the one from AnkhSVN then :) sounds like we're integrating seamlessly there :-)
- Sander Rijken
Sander, yeah it works really well actually, although I have been having regular crashes in VS2010 though working with WPF projects, now in the habit of saving after every change I make. Haven't sourced the problem yet but I am searching though.

If you want to help out, use Tools -> Attach to process from a second VS instance, just do your work until it crashes. Then inspect the exception, and report an issue at connect.microsoft.com (if not a known problem ofcourse). If it's a valid issue it'll most likely still be addressed for the final version

Sadness: It's gotten to where I almost always copy my post or comment to the clipboard because as often as not, FriendFeed coughs up an 'Oops' and I have to refresh and try again. Got tired of constantly retyping things so now instead of just hitting enter, I've gotten into the habit of hitting ⌘-A ⌘-C and THEN trying to post or comment.
I have had this happen a number of times

I just realized that it never happens to me when I'm using a third-party client; it only happens in the web interface.

Clients may try-catch and retry. Just a guess though.

These things are really the reason I am not posting new stuff to FF anymore. Unfortunately I have resorted to pushing out through twitter.
