a traveling salesman with a fondness for technology. a once-very-active friendfeeder who should probably jump back on the horse (or is that "back in the hose"?).
Any Android phone owners out there who regret the decision, and would rather have an iPhone? (making a decision myself...carrier in Canada is the same for both phones.)
I keep flip-flopping. Leaning now towards the $99 iPhone 3G over the HTC Magic (aka G2). Figure I'll let Android apps mature for a couple years, then make the switch...does that make any sense?

I have never "used" an iPhone, only played with it, so I can't really compare, my only wish was that the Android interface was a little more fluid when it slows down, or do a good job of hiding the slowness - or just more ram in my G1 to put a little pep in it. The battery life is also short, but with all I do (things running in the background and all), I'm not surprised. Other than that, I wouldn't give my phone up for anything.

I've been using the Magic/Ion that I got at Google I/O a few weeks back. I had been using the G1 prior to that. Big improvement in performance and battery life. I have no interest in switching to an iPhone. No regrets.
- scott anderson
From what I can tell, the G1 has 192mb of RAM, vs. 288mb in the Magic, so that should definitely help out with the "slowness" issues. Hmm...now leaning more towards the Android phone...

I think Android is rapidly improving (faster than Apple). If you enjoy Linux or fiddling with hardware the G1 wins no contest. With recent ROM builds, performace has improved (both speed and battery life). The iPhone 3GS is nice hardware, but Samsung's Galaxy looks like a good competitor. As a note I am ecstatic about the new Cyanogen build I loaded plus increased clock range (underclock and overclock).

I own a G1. The reason I chose it because of its hackability. If I weren't a developer, I may have chosen the iphone for its slightly better user experience. Overall, I wouldn't switch to an iphone.

I definitely prefer the openess of Android to Apple's policies. It would also suck to have to install iTunes, which I personally can't stand.
- Trent Olson
@Trent, you just reminded me another gripe about the iphone. Since my workstation is linux, itunes doesn't work on it! Android & openness FTW!
- imabonehead
I'd argue iTunes doesn't work on Windows either, given past experiences...
- Trent Olson
I don't regret it a second. But I never owned an iPhone. I tested it though, but it was terrible for me.

Is there any official place to get a developer G2/Ion/Magic ? I know there were a bunch from the conference that are on ebay, but... =P (I don't actually want a dev kit to develop on, but for cheapskate reasons I'd prefer not to have a data plan and I gather you need a dev phone to activate the data features over wifi...)

The openness of Android platform can only be appreciated with time. As for the Android devices - sure they keep improving (we're in the era of exploding IT, the internet, we're all hooked to it so no wonder) and at any moment you can have the fastest device that will be slow in two years. If you're a developer, iPhone app market is pretty strong now, while most people expect the similar to happen to Android apps, especially having in mind they go beyond the smartphones.

My wife and I both switched from the iPhone to the G1 earlier this year. We don't have any regrets about the phones. However, we're not happy about T-Mobile's coverage in the areas we live and work, which isn't a concern for you.

Android's main feature is its openness. The fact that so many iPhone users "jailbreak" points to a major defect in the default iPhone experience.

I think Android is the place to be right now out of WinMo, iPhone, webOS, Blackberry and whateverthehell symbian is doing, I just don't know if the G1 is the device, and I know for sure t-mobile ain't the network.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Typing this comment from my G2/Magic now!

I couldn't stand the iPhone 3G, got rid of it after about a week. The app environment just makes baby jesus cry.

Switched from iPhone 3G to Magic to G1. Apart from a lot of cool games and some apps i don't miss the iPhone. Prices for iPhone 3G S are currently horrendous, so i'll wait until after Christmas and if it i'd like to switch back get one by then. But currently nothing beats the G1 for me - well, except the Galaxy perhaps ;-)
- Ralph
Congrats Trent! Isn't it awesome? I looove my Magic:)

You know you're still in the honeymoon phase with your new phone when you're surfing friendfeed on it...and ignoring the desktop computer that is right in front of you.
i think maybe security tried to confiscate the bottle as it was more than 3oz, so instead of throwing it away, they sprayed it all on themselves.

i've decided that it's time to retire my windows mobile phone. my options are the HTC Magic (Andriod) or the iPhone 3G...which one?
