What to call black people has to be confusing to white people. Having been around for 73 years, I have been through a number of names. Among the polite ones are: colored, Negro, Afro-American, black, and now African-American. Among those names, African-American is probably the most unintelligent. You say, "What do you mean, Williams?" Suppose I told you that I had a European-American friend or a South-America-American friend, or a North-America-American friend. You'd probably say, "Williams, that's stupid. Europe, South America and North America are continents consisting of many peoples."

Read Walter William’s article, Race Talk, that breaks down the whole concept of calling blacks “African Americans.” It’s a term that white people use so that they feel comfortable with referring to “blacks.” In America, we have a CRAZY history of racial politics and practice - but that’s my point- slavery is uncomfortable - racism is uncomfortable - how do you comfortably refer to a whole population of people who are American - but were bought, kidnapped and forced to work in a place that they didn’t chose?

Award#0847879 - Doctoral Dissertation Research: The Potential for Wireless Signal Sharing Communities to Expand Digital Inclusion Efforts - http://www.nsf.gov/awardse...

This week, I want to look at one of the unglamorous, but essential, parts of science: the problem of how to organize the information you have so that you know what you’ve got. For, like everything else in the digital age, the process of collecting and managing scientific information has been evolving. Fast.

Irregular migration is a top priority in the European Union. Due to security and financial concerns, an increasing amount of resources are devoted to preventing people from entering without authorization, and to enforcing the return of Non-EU citizens who are not (or no longer) authorized to stay. At the same time, NGOs point to serious humanitarian side effects of this restrictive policy approach. Despite the political relevance of the phenomenon, assessments of the size of the irregular migrant population are often vague and of unclear origin. This website aims at increasing transparency in this sensitive field.

Mexico will start a national register of mobile phone users that will include fingerprinting all customers in an effort to catch criminals who use the devices to extort money and negotiate kidnapping ransoms. Under a new law published on Monday and due to be in force in April, mobile phone companies will have a year to build up a database of their clients, complete with fingerprints. The idea would be to match calls and messages to the phones' owners.

Calm, deliberate and devastating, Jessica Sanders's documentary "After Innocence" confirms many of the worst fears about weaknesses in the American criminal-justice system. In examining the cases of seven men wrongly convicted of murder and rape and exonerated years later by DNA evidence, the film reinforces the queasy feelings you have while following high-profile criminal trials.

As a grad student, I have a lot of important files on my computer. For that reason, I do regular backups (and you should too!) of all my files to an external hard drive using Time Machine. While such a backup solution is fine for mp3s, some files require more than that. I cannot imagine losing files from my research projects or my working papers (I’m shivering just by writing about it). Countless hours of work would be lost, which would surely result in a large financial loss if it delays my studies.

CJO - Abstract - Running out of credit: the limitations of mobile telephony in a Tanzanian agricultural marketing system - http://journals.cambridge.org/action...
Poor farmers often lack credit to purchase agricultural inputs, and rely on their buyers to provide it. This paper considers the effects of mobile phones on traders of perishable foodstuffs operating between Tanzania's Southern Highlands and Dar es Salaam's wholesale market, with a particular focus on the importance of credit in the relationship between potato and tomato farmers and their wholesale buyers. It argues that the ability to communicate using these new information and communication technologies (ICTs) does not significantly alter the trust relationship between the two groups. It also suggests that farmers, in effect, often have to accept the price they are told their crops are sold for – irrespective of the method of communication used to convey this message – because their buyers are also their creditors. In this situation, many farmers are unable to exploit new mobile phone-based services to seek information on market prices, and potential buyers in other markets.

Current literature stresses the significance of networks and network theory in both social as well as technical domains. Not only is the role of networked technologies (such as mobile phones and the internet) in everyday life being scrutinized, but network theory is re-shaping an understanding of how social change and community interaction occurs. In this article, I build on these developments to propose network action research as a methodological variant of the action research family. I propose that network action research is a timely and appropriate research methodology to guide studies that involve people, place and technology and to meet the challenges that stem from the changing nature of community interaction and social formations within a network society. I outline how technology can be used to operationalize and support network action research. Examples from two case studies are used to illustrate key aspects of the methodology.

Ethnographic studies of domestic environments have shown the fundamental roles that locations and context play in helping people understand and manage information in their homes. Yet it is not clear how this knowledge can be applied to the design of home technologies. For this reason, we present a case study in home technology design that uses the understandings gained from previous ethnographic studies on domestic locations to motivate the design of a home messaging system. Our prototype, called StickySpots, uses locations to embed technology in the social practices of the home. We then use this case study to reflect more generally on location-based design in the home.

Abstract This special issue on 'Return to Cyberia' is an attempt to evaluate the contemporary moment of new cultural and social forms influenced by rapidly evolving technologies in their first critical decade. It contains five case studies that highlight the range of transnational experiences - from temporary migrants and refugees to the second generation. The contributors address how and why transnational populations use particular communication technologies and the ways in which these practices are influenced by factors such as generation, history of settlement and dispersal, cultural values, class and access. In addition to addressing a wide variety of study populations, the case studies highlight the variety of available ICTs including email and the Internet, teleconferencing, telephones and mobile phones. Collectively, the articles address issues such as geographic identity and connectivity, different use patterns based on gender and

"Is There A Translator in Teh House?": Cultural and Discourse Analysis of a Virtual Speech Community on an Internet Message Board - Title page for ETD etd-04072005-145922 - http://etd.lsu.edu/docs...
In the newly emergent field of online ethnography, netspeak and online behavior are quickly becoming the next frontier of linguistic anthropology. The discourse analysis and cultural investigation of the virtual speech community of Penismightier.com reveal several salient aspects of culture through the lens of the internet and online human behavior. This thesis focuses on aspects of language use in the discourse on message board threads on the Penismightier website. The Pen speech community has innovated a lexicon of original and modified techie language, such as unique emoticons and alpha-numeric orthography. The orthographic innovations of this virtual speech community blur the division between spoken and written language. Covert categories for topic shifting and anti-Gricean maxims play an integral role in thread behavior. Flame wars are the apex of this community’s language behavior, infusing power/knowledge with techie elitism and sharp, sometimes sexual wit.
