When I was in elementary, we did one field trip every other month. In Jr. High, most of our field trips were weekenders, so I wasn't allowed to go. In HS, I probably did 4 field trips a year. I even offered to help raise money for the buses & insurance, but they said NCLB leaves them no room for field trips.

RAP, us too, and it was always dumb stuff like a field trip to the library down the street.

Anika, have you though about taking her out of school for a day and doing your own field trip ever now and then? Probably way more value than not getting out of the class at all. Not sure what your town/city is like but even going to a park or nature area would be of value. My kids probably go on 3 or 4 a year on average. Schools that don't do this are really shortchanging the kids (in my opinion).

does taking your kids out for their own field trip result in attendance marks out?

Yes, I've taken her out of school early to take advantage of free days at the museums Our weekends, we're either at a museum, public garden or somewhere educational. We go to street fairs, artwalks, public lectures and I do 8-week themes were a project, say on Mexican culture, includes art, music, food and the history of LA. This past weekend we went to the Queen Mary. But not all parents have that access and that makes me sad for them.

It's just sad, because we do see other kids from LAUSD out on field trips, but our school has so many programs, a Parent Center, on-site math and language courses, that the money goes to that. There has to be a balance. At our last meeting, the principal said the last time she approved a field trip was probably 7 or 8 years ago!

My $500 fundraising pledge for CatComm is but a portion of our $10k "Many Hands" campaign. The larger campaign is less than $900 from reaching our goal of $10 k ... which if reached by end of 2008 will bring in a $10 k challenge grant! It's excting to be this close!
- Michael Maranda
We have less than $3500 left to raise to succeed in our Challenge grant! Any amount will help! If successful we'll receive $10k to our cause.

I imagine some people are against this sort of stimulus -- I'd certainly rather my tax dollars supported this than the big bailout we recently witnessed.

Friends - we have a challenge grant - if we get 1000 new donors - or raise $10 k from new donors by year end, we will get a matching grant of $10,000 - please help - any amount will move us towards our goal.

Sunday is our Chicago Fundraiser/Kick-off of the Many Hands Campaign - we'll also have one in DC on the following Sunday. Any small amount will make a difference towards the 10k Challenge Grant we have!
