Twitter items seem completely stopped now on FirendFeed. Bad or about to be good news?
have they? are you sure? - Zee.
You mean Tweets imported into FF are near completely stopped? I've noticed they're 30/hr to 1hr lethargic though at that speed re: Real Time, that is dead. - sofarsoShawn
not sure of anything but that RSS is dead - Steve Gillmor
OH hey, yeah you're right, no Twitter updates since yesterday. - Scott Beale
lets not open that can of worms... :] About twitter, i see one 4 mins ago, but that's less than normal - Zee.
not a can of worms, an important recognition of fact - Steve Gillmor
it is important, re: especially my FF desktop notifier is severely behind on comments/likes to my tweets, so much so I had to turn it off, it was no longer relevant ~ FWD'ED to the Feedback room - sofarsoShawn
Hey, you're right. No tweets since the Twitter outage last night. Bummer. - Jolie O'Dell
I've been using Twitter intermittently while waiting for the resolution of this legal thing - Steve Gillmor
cannot add twitter accounts, no tweets, no posting to twitter accounts. - Patrickometry
did i read something saying Twitter was opening their firehose? - Karoli from IM
Patrick: what do you mean can't add - Steve Gillmor
Karoli: twitter announced opening firehose next quarter (spring) at LeWeb - Steve Gillmor

Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation
Some good examples on the often counter-intuitive nature of management and incentives. - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
I think traditional management techniques mostly just create disincentives, sometimes intentionally but often unintentionally. - Paul Buchheit
This is great. I want to learn more about this- especially now that I have a daughter. The talk reminds me that I wanted to read that book by Alfie Kohn (Punished By Rewards...) - metalerik
Alfie Kohn has another great book called Unconditional Parenting. Actually, I enjoyed watching a DVD of him lecturing on that topic even more than the book. It's all great in theory, but it is interesting actually parenting and realizing how often you reach for metaphorical carrots and sticks. - Laura Norvig
Thanks Laura, I just ordered the book. - Paul Buchheit
Awesome presentation! It's rare that a talk captivates me like this one did. - Troy Benohanian
LauraN, I was lucky to catch him speak in San Francisco about 18 months ago. I'm with you on theory vs practice- yikes. Still cool to keep working on it though! - metalerik
I have had success holding his theories (which are quite well supported by research) in the back of my mind, but for concrete ideas of how to put that into practice, I turn to the Positive Discipline books by Jane Nelsen. She also had a cool podcast for awhile that is still available here http://www.positivediscipline.com/podcast... It is pretty amazing when you stop trying to "make" your... more... - Laura Norvig
This TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks... is also about the ineffectiveness of incentives. It's premise is that people want to be virtuous and do right by others. - Laura Norvig
At one point in the Barry Schwartz video he talks about "moral heroes." My brother Peter is actually my moral hero. He's freakishly moral. - Laura Norvig
Bump because this is really important for people to understand. Waving money is not the answer - people *want* to do a good job, we are programmed to want to solve puzzles, make connections, take the next step but the way businesses are organised actively hampers these natural traits. It has implications for EVERYTHING we do at home and at work, as individuals and as communities. - WorldofHiglet
my idealistic side says we can blame capitalism for this whole mess. money confuses life. - Laura Norvig
Laura: capitalism may not be the best, but so far it's the only thing that scales. - Gabe
@gabe you mean "scales" in case of american capitalism in beginning of XXI century? :) - A.T.
By "scales", I mean it works for populations of tens of millions of people without rampant poverty or starvation. For instance, communism works fine, but doesn't scale well to thousands of people, let alone millions. - Gabe

Steve Gillmor
RT rachaelosborn: Steve Gillmor is the worst part of the Gillmor Gang. He's like Eeyore. http://live.twit.tv/
It often seems to me that most of the participants are either unhappy, bored or actually angry/dislike each other. From what I understand the show has a long history and perhaps people are burned out on it. - Trevor Childs
That's the very reason I tune in every week. - Ken Morley
I think the show is better than ever, and I'm the best thing on it - Steve Gillmor
thx leather. like your profile btw - Steve Gillmor
best communication show there is - Christopher Harris
The gang's latest outings have been better than ever actually. And the video, chat and audio tie-ins have only helped to improve it further. - Diego Barros 
frankly, Steve does a great job of moving the talk along and keeping people focused on the topics. i'm happy to listen to Steve force people to explain/defend their position then say a cheery 'alright' and move on... show's great! - philip ariza
cool, I need to do this asshole RT ting more often - Steve Gillmor
Eeyore Gilmore therefore? - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Eeyore is cool. Among other things, he can be happy with a limp balloon and a useful pot. And there haven't been any earthquakes recently... - Hilary Talbot
GG podcast/twitlive is the only place I can get updated on realtime issues in realtime. - Troy Benohanian
I really miss the old Gillmor classic sign off quote which he has lately truncated into a shorter and nicer sign off at the end of the show. This seems to be the hallmark of the show recently -- the "nicening" of Gillmor. Where is the crankier guy we all love? Has Leo softened him up? Was Calacanis' satirical take off on the sign off what ultimately killed it? Keep up the good job Steve and crew! - Chris Aldrich
I quite like Steve's diffident, no BS style. A bit cranky sometimes but he'll give anybody with half a brain a chance to express himself, and will admit when he's wrong (I think). - Sheldon Steiger
I would but never am - Steve Gillmor
LOL, Eeyore? LOL. I am amused. - Christopher Mercer
I love Steve Gillmor. He is pod casting's anti-host. And that makes GG hard to listen to at times. Sometimes I think he has abandoned his responsibility to guide the show but for a man who clearly has a strong opinion and a lot to say he exercises a great deal of restraint and grace for his guests. If you really want to know the man, read his writing. His review of a Bruce Springsteen concert and his recent assessment of micro-messaging's 'twitting point' show the the true wit, heart and soul of the man. - Gregg Scott
don't hate. - Jason Calacanis
Does anyone know of a link to the GG facebook API chat? - Wo

Aha, jcunwired, my favorite tome on Taoism not written by Alan Watts. - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
easily the podcast I most look forward to each week. im just waiting for the twitter is dead meme, after links and office. - Jamie
best. damn. podcast. ever. - Jay Cuthrell
Eeyore...lol. Gotta agree with Gregg Scott...he's the anti-host. My year of Newsgang Live was easily the best ever. Loved the challenge. - Karoli
Hate is a strong word and often comes out of envy/jealousy. What is there to hat about an accomplished and intelligent VC and Internet innovator? - Gregg Scott

Conde Nast to Close Portfolio Magazine - WSJ.com - http://online.wsj.com/article...
Conde Nast to Close Portfolio Magazine - WSJ.com
"Conde Nast Publications said it is closing Portfolio, the glossy business magazine it launched with fanfare two years ago...The news comes about six months after Conde Nast drastically reduced the staff of the magazine and cut its frequency from monthly to 10 times a year, in a move executives said would buy the publication more time to stem huge losses. But with downward pressure on advertising showing no signs of easing, Conde Nast executives said they determined the outlook was too dire to keep the publication alive...Though the recession has battered most magazines, Portfolio had been hit particularly hard. Ad pages in Portfolio fell nearly 61% in the first quarter compared to an industrywide decline of about 26% for the period, although there were three issues of Portfolio in the first quarter of 2008 compared to two this year. Accounting for the extra issue, ad pages declined 46%, according to figures from the Publishers Information Bureau." - bob from Bookmarklet

@Troy - I don't know - I'd say passing, but not passed. I think there is still a role for magazines for many years - but I don't think many are surprised to see Portfolio die... - Anthony Citrano
Steve Gillmor
I like talking about Twitter too! - Robert Scoble
Steve's opening lede: "I like talking about Twitter. I have no problem with Oprah getting hip to Twitter. I have no problem with being left off the Suggested List. I have no problem with Twitter having dropped Track and slowed the micromessaging era until it became totally obvious that Twitter is a transcendent shift in the fabric of the network. All the rest is noise. That’s because of people like the guys who are building out FriendFeed." - Robert Scoble
The line: "It’s not easy to hold your fire, or speak when you’re afraid of not being perfect" stands out for me. The reason that i've stopped reading blogs, google alerts, etc., is because people have gamed the system. There's way too much noise. I don't think you can do that in realtime so the real interesting people with depth and knowledge appear on my radar in a service like FriendFeed RealTime. - Troy Benohanian
Troy: that's an interesting insight, but everyone and everything is gamable, me thinks. It's just what systems are more resistant to gaming. Or which ones seem to have no return on gaming investment. - Robert Scoble
Troy - I think at some point all social systems are going to end up being "gamed" it is the nature of the business and the people who are in it. Not everyone comes from motives of sharing, there are still many people who make money off selling snake oil. That won't change any time soon, but nice comment on this. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
More filtering will help, but don't you think people who are freaked out about realtime mostly either: 1) Can't get comfortable with not attending to every little thing, or 2) Are following too many people? - Amyloo
per steve, friendfeed's goal is to "foster a suite of tools for managing the rich flow of metadata orbiting content objects on the information network" - i like this concept, which i'm assuming is paraphrased from either bret or paul - this is actually a pretty pro-friendfeed and twitter fanboy light post from steve, who appears to be opening up to the potential that friendfeed is not a waste of time, not that his blessing is necessary but some folks still pay attention to him ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
As Steve mentioned, we're not there yet. The subscribe/block/mute abilities of these services give them the advantage over traditional alerts and email and the gentle culling of your own lists from time to time serve as weeding in your own attention garden. Yet to bloom are the advanced filters and cross-pollination some of us desire but it's early in the growing season (aw crap, can you tell I was in the backyard gardening this morning? Metaphor is always found in real time real life gestures...). - Aron Michalski
For realtime network fans, the ability to have these platforms co-exist and connect in a timely fashion allows for the exchange of ideas, the experience of a gathering, the ability to riff on someone else's phrase when it's fresh and uncontaminated by time and noise. Sure, chess by mail is fine for some but we now have the ability to sit across the table wherever we are, as many of us who want to play. - Aron Michalski
And here's an idea; is anyone working on Friendfeed meshing with a comment service (disqus, seesmic, facebook, etc.) in the other direction, our identities optionally posting here and putting our realtime thoughts into the bottom of thoughtful posts, so no matter where you are, there it is? - Aron Michalski
Disqus is supposed to be doing that on the blog end, not sure about how it would work here. I know the comment stream is fragmented here between blog comments, tweets and friendfeed. given a choice, I'd prefer they aggregate on the blog. - Karoli
