Star Trek -- SPOILERS -- SPOILERS -- SPOILERS
star-trek-comic-con-poster.jpg
Spoilers, spoilers and more spoilers. If you haven't seen the film yet HIDE NOW. From here on out, you better have either seen the film or not plan to see it, because we're going to talk about it. That's right, actually TALK ABOUT THE FILM. That may include but not be limited to plot, characters, effects... all stuff that might SPOIL the film for you if you haven't seen it. You've been warned. - Ken Sheppardson
Seriously. We're going to talk about the film now. If you don't want to hear about it, hit HIDE. - Ken Sheppardson
I put that BIG logo up there so you won't see any of this text down here unless you really want to. You haven't clicked HIDE yet? OK, here we go... - Ken Sheppardson
Are they gone?... - Ken Sheppardson
Ya know there is a spoiler room? http://friendfeed.com/spoilers - Uncle CW™
I'm going to go see it tomorrow, but luckily I don't seem to be the type to get spoiled. - Tony, Paradox of FF
I loved the whole space-time-continuem theme - Jesse Stay
CW: I don't want to see spoilers about *EVERYTHING*... - Ken Sheppardson
And I really, really, really want them to make a series that starts with the time of the movie and uses these actors - Jesse Stay
They actually did it. I loved it!! Chris Pine was KIRK. omgwtf. - Chrimmus Tad
The cool thing about this is that now the space-time continuem has been altered, they can completely re-do the entire Star Trek series ;-) - Jesse Stay
I liked how they did that too Jesse. It was awfully cheesy, but better than not bothering to try to explain it away. - Chrimmus Tad
My one tiny little complaint, which I want to get out of the way, is that *EVERYBODY* knows you can't actually travel through a black hole. Sheesh. ;-) OK, that said, I'm still having a little trouble adjusting to the fact that technically everything I ever knew about ST no longer applies. Well, everything except "Enterprise" i.e. Archer and crew. I mean, they hit the reset button when Kirk was born, basically. - Ken Sheppardson
I haven't seen it yet so im just guessing, but if time was altered, all they're really showing is another timeline/universe in the multiverse. Like the universe of the Terran conquerors. - Tony, Paradox of FF
So all the shows/movies up till now still happened, just in a different timeline from the new stuff. - Tony, Paradox of FF
It's not worth thinking too hard about. - Chrimmus Tad
To the extent that it's fictional, yes, everything still really happened, Tony ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
Yes, I mean in the fictional universe. I'm not going all Heinlein Number of the Beast here. - Tony, Paradox of FF
...but now they've sorta got a blank slate, and don't have 30 years or continuity to worry about if they want to continue down this path. They don't have to worry about guys like me saying "Yeah, but NCC-1701 was actually built at SF Yards, not Iowa, and Robert April was her first captain, not Pike..." - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, I totally hope they do that. I really hope they use this cast to do it, too. - Jesse Stay
So what are they gonna call the next movie? Star Trek 2-A? - The Web's Wendell Wittler
I mean if you can create black holes with red matter, I think it's safe to dismiss disbelief when they travel through it. - Bwana ☠
and Yes, I want a TV series....NAO - Bwana ☠
I love that everything was explained... no plot holes running amuck - Bwana ☠
As far as I can tell the working title for this one was "Star Trek Zero", which fits pretty well. Maybe they can do 0.1, 0.2, etc. :-) - Ken Sheppardson
BTW, I thought the casting was pretty much perfect. Particularly not trying to shoe-horn Shatner in there somewhere. - Ken Sheppardson
Agreed, every character was casted VERY well - Bwana ☠
Bones' entrance was epic...perfect...man. I really enjoyed this film - Bwana ☠
Also, "Kirk, Sulu, and Olson go on an away mission..." Nice to see them perpetuate the tradition of the red shirt... - Ken Sheppardson
Somebody explain to me how this wasn't a 5/5 film, will ya? - Ken Sheppardson
Ken a few issues for me that prevent it from being 5/5. A lack of any ethical weight. This is what made Star Trek the TV series special. Time travel again? Earth would never be left so unguarded. These people are very young to get the keys to the family car. Finding Spock the elder was pure magic. So I give it a 4.5. Graphics, acting, story all excellent. They managed to capture the... more... - Todd Hoff
Todd: Yeah, I guess I'm not willing to mark it down for lack of ethical weight/dilemma. That expectation died with the DS9 era. Time travel's a requirement for the reboot, IMHO. Earth unguarded = fleet was in the Laurentian system, IIRC, dealing with the aftermath of Nero's attack on the Klingons, and eveybody else had got it at Vulcan. - Ken Sheppardson
The thing that sorta nags at me is one minute Kirk hasn't even graduated from the academy yet, and the next he's the new captain of the flagship? Hm. OK... maybe 4.9/5 ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
Can't buy the everyone was at Laurentian argument. There were no defensive platforms on the moon or in orbit? Anyway, they would always leave enough ships to guard Earth. Always. And with no ethical dimension the franchise loses a lot in my mind. I can watch a lot other movies for pure action. - Todd Hoff
Well, if they have to staff the bridge of the flagship with academy undergrads, they're clearly having issues. :-) And how is this Nero's mining ship just whiping out 40+ Klingon ships, all of Vulcan's defenses, the just planting itself over San Francisco? OK, yeah... I'm with you now, Todd. 4.8/5 :-D - Ken Sheppardson
Also... so... a 1/4 inch diameter sphere of "red matter" gives you a black hole. There's a 10 foot ball of it in Spock's ship, he crashes into Nero's and you get... a slightly larger black hole? No, like, galaxy consuming super black hole or anything? It's just like "oops... better eject the core... *boom*. ok, we're fine." - Ken Sheppardson
Todd Hoff, I imagine Pike did tell Nero the codes to Starfleet's defense grid. And it defeated the Klingon ship because it's a mining ship, retrofitted with 24th century weapons. I imagine that gives it quite an advantage. - Guillermo Esteves
Oh, and does this movie have the highest fucking body count in the history of movies or what? - Guillermo Esteves
Totally loved the movie. The story itself was mainly just meh, but I loved the new characters and I was pretty much blown away by new Kirk. - Chrimmus Tad
Aha! Right... defense codes and a 100 years or so of weapons development. Thank's Guillermo :-) - Ken Sheppardson
We really enjoyed this movie last night. - Troy Ryder
@ Ken Sheppardson: When they mentioned Olson, I immediately thought of Ensign Ricky: http://echosphere.net/star_tr... - Guillermo Esteves
Guillermo: A full list from the other day - http://friendfeed.com/kshep... - Ken Sheppardson
Guillermo, there's no way Pike knew the codes to the entire defense grid. That would be like the captain of a carrier knowing the president's nuclear launch codes. And in any case there was no fight at all around earth. Grid or not there would be a fight. - Todd Hoff
We just saw it today - it was awesome. But somewhat disturbing to go along with that as well. Many many questions. Want the DVD out say, now would be nice. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
When you walk out of the theater, talk really loudly saying "I can't believe they killed off Kirk?!?!" It's true, it sounds like a spoiler, but it's not. - Andy Bakun
Yeah, it would be like handing the keys to the fleet's flagship to a cade—oh, wait. In any case, there might have been a fight. We just didn't see it. - Guillermo Esteves
Having just left the theater...holy shit, did Chris Pine really just BECOME Captain Kirk? I mean, really? HOLY SHIT. Amazing! I think this Chris Pine has a real future as an action hero-y star...can we recast LeBOOOOOOOOFFFEJORJER, rewrite the last Indy film, and has Pine as the next Indy? Seriously, this movie was everything a reboot should be and more. I want a TV series, 10 movies, more more MOAR! - Mike Nayyar
I felt the same way about Chris Pine. That was an amazing Kirk performance. He'll NEVER be Shatner, but he was Kirk. - Chrimmus Tad
Calm down, Mike...you've been infected with the Trek virus...the sensations you are feeling will go away soon. - Alex Scoble
Alex, I've always been a Trekkie. It's just that the Berman Balm really dampened things the last few years. - Mike Nayyar
Mike, I've been a trekkie for most of my life too. And yeah, the years since First Contact until now were not good for the starship Enterprise. - Alex Scoble
to quote Tad "Totally loved the movie. The story itself was mainly just meh, but I loved the new characters and I was pretty much blown away by new Kirk. " - Mark Essel
incredible cast, wonderful intros. Not enough time left for a story. And it wasn't new, big bad guy in space ship was done already in Nemesis. Appreciated altering the time line to free up writers. I don't mind seeing new stories/a new universe. - Mark Essel
The movie made me think of comparisons to the previous installments: Villains: Star Trek 11 - bald Romulan, ST 10 - bald Romulan, ST 8 - bald Borg, ST 6 - bald Klingon (ST 2 - Khan with lots of hair and bare chest). Motive: Nero wants revenge for the death of his wife, Khan wants revenge for the death of his wife (ST 3 & 6 - Kirk wants revenge for the death of his son). ST 1 - large... more... - Nils Sandin
I found it interesting the way the events of the movie has wiped clean the entire Star Trek universe. Every event from all the movies and tv series, everything we know is gone. I liked the more "industrial" look of the Enterprise's inner workings. I smell a sequal. - Brian Cagle
Just got back from seeing it and I'm impressed. I smell several sequels. Also, the-film-that-must-not-be-named could now probably be ignored and Kirk can live to a ripe old age. I think Pine did a fine job of becoming Jim Kirk and I absolutely loved Simon Pegg as Scotty. Good casting all around, I think. - Andy Kruger
Firstly... I LOVE IT... second of all.................. what's with all the hanging off cliffs and ledges? :D - Johnny Worthington
Let me reshare that for you. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Recommend reading the prequel comic. Answers many questions and is an excellent tie to the previous timeline. Kind of hoping there's a sequel to that work as well. - Steven "Doc" Combs
One interesting tid bit from the comic: Borg technology was used to enhance the mining ship. - Steven "Doc" Combs
