Dear Leo, I love you to death, however, please let your darling daughter know Monaco is not an island off the coast of France and yes, Monte Carlo is the capitol. My daughter is the same age and we are starting to shop college's as well. I wish you the best of luck finding a school that suits her well. I was an exchange student as well and found it the best experience ever! - Jennifer Ragde
Okay, now my computer politically correct daughter is telling me this was not the correct way to state my opinion as I should have commented on the photograph. I'm really sorry, I love to listen to your broadcasts, but I really am computer retarded so please forgive me if I have transgressed in any manner. I can't even upload photographs without her help! Really, you don't look dapper,... more... - Jennifer Ragde
LOL Jennifer and +1 for your daughter. :) - Josh Haley
You look so dapper, Leo!! - Mona Nomura
go leo! - sean percival
That's awesome - Jesse Stay

Outstanding, Mr Laporte. You can see the in dream there. Potential and promise sporting a tank-top. - Dan Biddle
Those pants look like they may be restricting blood flow a little bit... Also, sweet chalk board! Haven't seen one of those in years! - Mark
I hardly recognised you. It maybe your outfit but you look older in this photo - Kevin J Hatton
Taken at a radio station? (based on blackboard notes) Wait. BLACKBOARD??? Wow. :) - caj needs a haircut
Excellent sweater vest there, Leo! - John Lutz
That's on handsome man! lol - Melissa Goetsch
Leo, you were one hot stack if pancakes back in the day!! - Erik Boles
Not to nitpick or anything, but Monaco is the name of the state and the capital city. Monte Carlo is just one of city's administrative areas :) - Dorian
It's 1985 or 1986. I was 28 or 29. And an utter dork. - Leo Laporte
This vintage is good stuff! - Jackie Miao
not vintage but funny - http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Mike Bracco
Okay. Leo you rock! Let me get that out of the way. But you look like Susan Boyle in this photo. Sorry, someone had to throw it out there. ;-) - Oracio
LEO: if this was a family photo I think it might make it on to the hilarious site that aggregates awkward family photos: http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/ must check this out! :) - Mike Bracco
Not a family photo - it's a work photo. That's from KLOK-FM San Francisco. - Leo Laporte
Leo: I know, I was just saying if it was :) - Mike Bracco
What's that funny lookin thing in the background? - Daniel James
Daniel.. I think that is what was known as a monochrome display. They were all the rage back then apparently. - Rhys Amos
Your hair wasn't even real back then! :P - Kreg Steppe
I think his hair looks better now - Jim Hague
Dear Dorian, I stand corrected. I was just stunned that someone thought Monaco was an island. When I was in high school (when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, ha ha!), we had to memorize the world in geography. I guess times have changed. - Jennifer Ragde
LOL, I took all those old photos of me and hid them deep! - Lillian Banchik
OMG I just found this... *DEAD* - Johnny
Oh wow, totally 80s, fer shure. :P - Mol, FF Music Lover
You must have respect for wives. That they could see anything other than the geeks we looked like in those days makes you believe in clairvoyance. Of course now you would qualify as a silver fox. - JR Holmes from Nambu
You looked smart and confident :) Great photo! Thanks for sharing! - mahjongmi

It cracks me up. Whenever anything changes the vast majority of people scream and yell and gnash their teeth. Humans are a conservative lot
I went to FF because I didn't like FB - so no I don't like this change. - Zphotogal
I go where the people go... so I'm on FF and FB and twitter... - Ankush Narula
Special case: Apple products. People scream with glee. :P - Kevin
Leo, you were one of those who "escaped" to Friendfeed. How is it good for you? - DonnaSue
it is not about change, people are already expirementing FB, and FF so it is natural to see people scream at migration (not change) - abdellah
I would have said 'crazy' lot - Sidney
Any other company but Facebook and I'd have be ok with it. - Paul Grav
i was reading another thread and everyone was acting as if they sky was falling and trying to decide which dark corner of the internet they were going to run and hide in...i thought it was kinda funny. - Sidney
friendfeed is where I find great stories, links and conversations. Facebook is where the girls I knew in highschool talk about their sick kids. So, yeah, not really thrilled with this move, BUT it will either work or all the friendfeed users will just find another service that better meets their needs (and isn't inside a walled garden). Friendfeed users are much more likely to just leave if the service doesn't do what they want. - John
Leo, do you understand our concerns regarding the ToS? Seriously. That's why I'm worried/concerned. This isn't a new interface. This isn't a new login procedure. This is whether I own my FriendFeed data or is it now Facebook's. - Bwana ☠
I see this, if anything, as a good thing for FF. It wasn't mainstream enough, but that may change now. - Mario
I agree with John Hayes' comment above. I think most FF users do not want to muddle the two spaces and will find another service that fills their needs. - berchman
I doubt they are interested in friendfeed.com. Facebook wants the realtime search technology and expertise. - Mads Kristiansen
Embrace change!!! - David Lovekamp
I say it's good for both. Totally fits into Facebook's new strategy and I for one am looking forward to it - Mosi
I am just sad, I didn't grab the facefeed.com domain.. - Mads Kristiansen
My thoughts exactly Leo. - iTad from fftogo
I hope they keep the service going and not combine it to Facebook. I guess I am one of those humans that doesn't like change. - Lou Griffith
Facebook? Do not want! It's closed and icky. - Lurking Grue
I don't think that leo is disputing the fact that the merge will take away from the experience from some of the friendfeed users. It seems fairly obvious that without being bought friendfeed has little chance surviving and growing.. - Jonathan Aird
I hope you are ready for Zombie applications, Leo. - beersage
Coulda been worse: what if Wal Mart bought Friendfeed instead? - Tom Landini
Change? We fear change. - Scott
Who moved the social media cheese? - Jim Goldstein
I was shocked I'm actually seeing the good in acquisition. I wish I had something to be acquired by facebook. One of the most used sites in the world, I would love that chance. Good for friendfeed. - kenneth glenn
I'm not opposed to change, I'm opposed to BAD change. I can see no upside to this, I can see no way that this could lead to improvement. All roads lead downhill from here. Call me a cynic, but the only difference between a cynic and an optimist is that the cynic is usually right. - Otto
let's face it, Facebook is noisy and a totally different user experience - if I wanted that, I would spend more than one hour a year there :) - Valeria Maltoni
When they cut tbe bottom out of the peach basket , I am sure everyone howled:" you have changed the complextion of the game for goodness sake!!! Give it time. I don't think anyone living or dead thinks basketball was ruined by that major change!! - cheapsuits from iPhone
Comparing mere feature changes to Walled Garden-loving Company A acquiring open, innovative Company B is a bit misguided. - beersage
If Twit and Revision3 merged, I don't think many people would be screaming. - sebastian☆rocket brother from iPhone
I think Louis Gray summarized this change best in his recent post. I'm happy for them, but worried. - xero
My issue is that it was Facebook that acquired FriendFeed. If Google acquired FriendFeed, I'd be dancing in the streets. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I think Wal Mart should buy Apple now. - Tom Landini
Conservative (in your context) people are a loud and angry lot. A vocal minority, I think. - ben
Agreed. - Nicholas James
Remember our previous favorite -- Jaiku? - John Flinchbaugh
Nothing like a good gnash... like the end of the GG... - Aron Michalski
The thing is, most change here lately has been for the worse. - Robert Hafer from iPhone
more Change I cant believe in.... - John Hillestad
i like that friend feed was more artistic, intelligent and not too main stream. If they keep the two independent, fine. If all things Friend Feed are linked to or integrated into Facebook, and I have to hang out with all those Facebook drones............well, we'll see. Also as some one who moved to Friend Feed to escape all the celebrity giberish and nonsensicle self promotion, I really hope that FB serves as a parent company and does not try to integrate them too closely - echostreamer
What Bwana said here and April Russo said here http://friendfeed.com/scoblei.... Does anyone know about the content ownership issue? - metalerik
Okay, okay, Leo. Be the voice of positivity. Someone should, anyway. But here's my 2 cents. I spend most of my time daily on Friendfeed. Facebook is only a small portion of what I share here. Most people fear of course that FB will absorb FF and make it more of what they are providing, rather than what we are already getting from FF. I hope you're right, as does everyone. But based on what FB has shown me, I, like the others, have little hope of this. - Fleagle
Changes involving larger companies never seems to end up good for the smaller company. There are exceptions, but not a lot. - James Bailey
It's not about screaming about change. Nothing good will come out of the FF/Facebook deal! I hate Facebook! - Jannifer @wordsforliving

I hate the sites that just pull entire posts like that. Sigh. - Kathy Fitch
Mark, it's amazing how many sites do that--the "more at actual author" link just doesn't make it right at all. Plagiarizers stink. - Kathy Fitch
Cash Bandit is a scraper site. What can you do? And Holden, I publish these once a month, and it's the 17th time. How much more often do you want them? :) - Louis Gray
Holden, I am always serious on this. But I think I will stick with monthly. There are only so many new ones to find, and I don't want to reduce the quality to hit unrealistic schedules. 17 months of 5 new ones each month means 85 new feeds for people who follow this to the T. - Louis Gray
Hate the scrapers--it's just way too easy for folks to end up citing them, as Mark did. So many blogs . . .The "steal it part and parcel" thing, I don't get. What's in it for those folks, anyway? - Kathy Fitch
@Louis What can you do about the scraper sites? Well you pretty much know that fighting them is futile, unless you want to waste all your time sending DMCA notices, leaving little time left to have a life of your own. The alternative would be to covertly embrace them and make them work to your advantage. Read this FAQ and register your feeds with FairShare and then sign up for RevShare... more... - April

Jay Rosen
CEO of NPR is clear: they won't go paywall. She calls it a "mass delusion" in the news industry http://www.newsweek.com/id... (via @acarvin)
The new NPR site is really well done. Good interview w/ Schiller as well. - Ken Kennedy
When paywalls go up, the ones left standing will be orgs like NPR. Smart move on their part. - Matt M (inactive)
It really amazes me that the newspaper industry has so buried it's head in the sand and learned nothing from the other media outlets (chiefly the recording industry). It's really kind of sad that the entire industry really can't think, and find ways to innovate in the current realities of news. To me, it simply proves that the current news organizations will in fact die. Newspapers have... more... - Chad Albert
Some great quotes from the article, too: 'Frankly, if all the news organizations locked pinkies, and said we're all going to put up a big fat pay wall, you know what, more traffic for us.' -- Love it. - Ken Kennedy
A remarkably blunt statement, all the more so since she is a former NY Times digital executive. - Jay Rosen
Recall for back story the editor of the Financial Times claiming almost all serious news organizations will go with a pay model. We discussed it: http://ff.im/5jmCo - Jay Rosen
Two questions, which always occur to me when New Media critics roll their eyes and mock news publishers for wanting paywalls: 1). If not some form of subscriptions, what will work? (And the answer, unless you are a genuine "gravedancer" cannot be a variation of Clay Shirky's now-famous formulation:"Nothing will work." I'm looking for real, helpful suggestions.) 2. The alternative to... more... - Jason Pontin
"As senior vice president and general manager of the NYTimes.com, Vivian Schiller presided over one of the industry's best-read Web sites..." Her words:."I am a staunch believer that people will not in large numbers pay for news content online. It's almost like there's mass delusion going on in the industry—They're saying we really really need it, that we didn't put up a pay wall 15... more... - Jay Rosen
NPR has subscription revenue AND $200+ million courtesy of Joan Kroc. Who needs a paywall when you have a moat of cash like that? - Alan Mairson
I don't get it. IF Vivian Schiller is correct, IF it's a delusion, IF "people will not in large numbers pay for news content online," how does the $200 million Joan Kroc gave to NPR alter that equation for the news organizations planning to charge? She may be wrong in her interpretation of history, her predictions about user behavior may be off, but I don't see what the $8 million to $10 million in income from the endowment has to do with the situation for the news companies she's referencing. - Jay Rosen
Agreed, Jay. Schiller estimates in that very article that the endowment (currently about $258M according to Wikipedia) would need to be $8 _billion_ to fully support "the operating budget of a large national-international news organization". 3.5% of that total in the bank is fantastic, but it doesn't make NPR magically immune to financial considerations. - Ken Kennedy
Annual newsroom budget for the NYTimes is about $200 million. - Jay Rosen
... My point: NPR has a business model that doesn't require a paywall—and that business model includes more Joan Krocs. The Washington Post & countless other papers don't have that option. - Alan Mairson
Okay, they don't have that option because no one gave them a $200 million endowment. Message received. I heard you the first, second and third times you made this point, Alan. Full stop. And how does that point bear on the question of whether users will pay for online news? I must be really thick because I STILL don't get it. - Jay Rosen
Well, Jay, I guess you didn't hear the other part of my message, which I've also repeated multiple times: paywalls are a "delusion"; paywalls are a "mass delusion." People won't pay for (most) content. Vivian Schiller is right. We agree with each other. Full stop. Everything okay thus far? .... Good. Now here's the second point: Listening to Vivian Schiller dismiss paywalls is like... more... - Alan Mairson
No, I'm sorry, it isn't. You must be referencing other listeners who, you are speculating, will not be convinced by her arguments because NPR has an endowment, so it's "easy for her to say." So who will they be convinced by? Bloggers with no skin in the game? http://tr.im/u7Ta Steve Yelvington? (career newspaper man) http://www.yelvington.com/node... Jeff Jarvis, who is now seen as an... more... - Jay Rosen
Who is the right messenger? The *current* VP for nytimes.com or the publisher of the Washington Post—because Vivian Schiller, like the bloggers you reference, no longer has any skin in the paywall game. She escaped a horrible situation at the Times—a great career move for her. But she's like the poor girl who marries rich—and then bad mouths all her old friends back home in the projects... more... - Alan Mairson
Absolutely: one's position and investment in the media system should affect how we read and interpret that person. Anyone who says Clay Shirky knows nothing about the media business is behaving like a clown, yes. By your own testimony the statement isn't true. "Can you believe that everyone isn't doing what Google is doing" doesn't describe anything I have said. Nor have I said that... more... - Jay Rosen
Thanks, Jay. - Alan Mairson
Also, http://twitter.com/jayrose... ... "I am myself STRONGLY in favor of having pro journalists who get paid to do great work full time, and I consider them essential to the nation." - Jay Rosen
Alan, I hear your point...but saying "Who is the right messenger? The *current* VP for nytimes.com or the publisher of the Washington Post" --- when that happens, they debate is over. That's like saying that until the opposing viewpoint agrees with me, my argument isn't valid. - Ken Kennedy
In addition, I think the comparison of Schiller to a poor girl who married rich is a bit disingenuous. It's a valid decision to vote with your feet. If her analysis of the situation was that that the NYT wasn't moving from its delusional decision (that charging for commodity news is a good idea), and NPR seemed like a better fit and a more enlightened place to work...calling her a gold-digger is pretty unfair. - Ken Kennedy
aside from the debate over who should be taken as credible in the discussion, isn't much of the newspaper's problem generating subscribers a result of sheer overcapacity? I counted the number of 'original' stories in my local paper this morning: 27% by number. Even less by column inch. If 73% of the news in a paper is syndicated, why would anyone pay for it multiple times and in an... more... - jeff hammond
@jason_pontin, the solution re:news media "pay wall" is here: http://businessmindhacks.com/post... - Alex Schleber
Ken - If Katherine Weymouth says "paywalls are nuts," then the debate would be over ***at the Washington Post***. But it wouldn't end the industry-wide debate. Everyone would wait & see if the WaPo could make it work. See: TimesSelect. ... And yes, of course it's valid to vote with your feet. But sitting at the New York Times and saying "paywalls are delusional" is a negation, not a... more... - Alan Mairson
P.S. (I wrote this in a comment last night, but I accidently deleted it) As Jay knows, I was, until recently, a writer & editor for National Geographic magazine, the official journal of the National Geographic Society. When Joan Kroc dropped $200 million on NPR, you could hear the Society's foundation & grants people groan: "Why not us??" I think it's because National Geographic's... more... - Alan Mairson
I saw the comment last night, Alan. I'm not disputing your industry chops. *grin* - Ken Kennedy
@Alan: wrt your comment, "And to call NPR "enlightened" is to suggest that the NYTimes is not." -- I didn't say that...I [edit] said that, to Schiller, NPR (might) "[seem like] a better fit and a more enlightened place to work". WRT this situation (news as commodity), I'd stand by (ie, agree with) that statement, based on what I know. Also, my point there was that your gold-digger comment was harsh, not that the NYT was a bad, evil place. - Ken Kennedy
@Ken: FYI - I wasn't trying to establish my "chops" - just wanted to share a story that highlights the problem most newspapers & magazines will have emulating the NPR model. (If anyone could come close, it would be a non-profit like National Geographic. But, as I mentioned, I think Rupert & Co put the kabosh on that strategy. I hope I'm wrong, but NGS has been doing the foundation &... more... - Alan Mairson
Wow. 49 likes. Definitely an outlier in the "likes" department. Wonder why. :-) - Jay Rosen
Liking is a lot easier than paying! - Jim Norris
Coming in late, but... the NYT could only get 225K online subscribers during the paywall era to cough up $50 each. To me, that suggests that even if people haven't yet thought of any good, non-advertiser alternatives to paywalls, paywalls themselves won't work. - Andrew C (✓)
If I understand Jay's argument, we are in agreement, for once. (I put aside his reflexive and unhelpful personal invective - "clown," etc. - as a feature of his prose style.) I don't get Vivian Schiller's point, either. People *are* paying for NPR's content - in the form of small donations by the millions of dollars, in large endowments like Joan Kroc's, and in some (dwindling)... more... - Jason Pontin
OTOH, Cook's Illustrated has 260K subscribers to their online site ( http://www.37signals.com/svn... ), but then again that's a very different business in all sorts of ways... - Andrew C (✓)
original article is a great read. - Chieze Okoye
@Alan...no worries! I did actually, first pass, misunderstand your NatGeo point. I hear what you're saying there. Also glad we've connected...you're posting some interesting stuff. @Andrew...the Cook's Illustrated comparison IS relevant, IMO, b/c as you note, they're different. The value that people are paying for is about as far from "news [or food, in this instance] as commodity" as... more... - Ken Kennedy
Too bad NPR is so obviously biased. Nothing says "tax revolt" like our tax dollars supporting liberal propaganda. >.> - David C. Cooper

Today, Google engineers announced a technology called PubSubHubbub that makes RSS/Atom more real-time, and they deployed the technology on FeedBurner. FriendFeed also added support for the technology, so if you have a FeedBurner feed, your updates should show up in FriendFeed within seconds rather than minutes after the feed updates.
To enable it for your FeedBurner feed: go to Feedburner, click on the "Publicize" tab, and then click on "PingShot" and enable the PingShot service. That will enable PubSubHubbub and send your feed to a number of ping services. - Bret Taylor
what, right now? i mean immediately? From today? - Zee.
Zee: yes, right now! - Benjamin Golub
Zee: yes, from today, though the technology is very much "in beta," so I am sure there will be hiccups. - Bret Taylor
Excellent, thank you Bret and FF, will switch this on now. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
WOW. - Zee.
Nice - thanks Bret! - Jim Connolly
RSS is back in the game... then - Yann Ropars
This is very cool - Edwin Khodabakchian
Once step closer to being able to build an open distributed twitter like system! - Edwin Khodabakchian
this has been done already by superfeedr.com - google's behind the game on this one, but def takes it mainstream. - Scott Magdalein
I don't understand. Updates won't appear on Feedburner in realtime, so what's the point? - ˈpɛbə
Peter: most blogging platforms ping Feedburner when you post a new entry, Feedburner pulls down the feed, Feedburner then pings the hub, then the hub notifies FriendFeed :) - Benjamin Golub
Thanks Benjamin. Alas, my feeds are not that sophisticated. - ˈpɛbə
We're still working out kinks so if you have any issues please send me a message! - Brett Slatkin
You lost me at "Today" I shall now just smile and nod politely - SteVe C
Where's the spec? - Dave Winer
Dave: http://pubsubhubbub.googlecode.com/svn.... Edit: Brett beat me by nanoseconds! - Benjamin Golub
If I understand correctly this essentially turns any site with a feedburner feed into a real time publisher? But to read it in real time you need what? - BryanSchuetz
Since this is a Google thingie, does it work on Google Reader already? - Tarmo Aidantausta
FriendFeed can receive the pings *RIGHT NOW* - Brett Slatkin
guys, how long are we really talking before it should appear here? Seconds or minutes? - Zee.
The Reader integration is a prototype; more to come soon! - Brett Slatkin
no way, so Google Reader could technically go real time?? - Zee.
That would be cool, wouldn't it? =) - Brett Slatkin
I stopped reading here: "RSS isn't supported for simplicity." Laughing. Out. Loud. - Dave Winer
I better make sure i get post titles right the first time round..... - Zee.
Brett - any chance i could ask you a couple of questions via email or dm? - Zee.
Hey Dave that's my mistake. We support RSS! http://code.google.com/p... I need to update the spec. - Brett Slatkin
is that SUP's role take up by those rss accelerator? or SUP is losing a chance to propagate in this field? - huixing
Huixing: we plan to support all widely adopted real-time standards to make FriendFeed better. We are not tied to SUP only. - Bret Taylor from iPhone
Brett, why didn't you use the weblogs.com ping protocol? Your comment there about RSS, right up front, really captures the whole philosophy -- right? Let's just reinvent stuff that already works, so... Why? To break everything that already works? It won't happen that way. It'll only make your adoption curve steeper. - Dave Winer
Is this working for anyone else? Anyone getting near real time publishing to Friendfeed with feedburner? - Zee. from iPhone
Would you ping me (dave dot winer at gmail dot com) when I can use RSS with this system. I'll be happy to evaluate it and provide feedback if necessary, and endorse it if it works. Thanks in advance. - Dave Winer
Alright we've fixed in the spec Dave. Sorry for the mistake. Followed up. - Brett Slatkin
Dave you can use rss feeds http://code.google.com/p... - Darren Stuart
I agree why didn't ff just implement a ping server and just let people add it to their blogs? - Darren Stuart
Darren: you can use our public SUP in that way: http://friendfeed.com/api... - Benjamin Golub
Zee- there are some debugging tools at the bottom of http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/, which I think is the hub you're using. For example, I don't see anything here: http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/topic-d... - Casey Muller
Ping this, ping there. What's so great about it? - Burcu Dogan
Benjamin: thanks that just saved me a little work. Should be linked on the api page I think. ;) - Darren Stuart
Just enabled this myself, glad to be on the bleeding edge for once ! - Justin Long
Awesome. Just enabled it. Thanks for the details Brett. - Mark Krynsky
Mark, can you let me know if it works for ya? - Zee.
@Casey i can't seem to get it working - Zee.
Darren: it's linked from http://code.google.com/p... but yeah we should do a better job of exposing it. - Benjamin Golub
I had enabled from way before, let's see if the post I'm about to publish works. I'll DM you Zee if it does! - Jorge Escobar
can someone please let me know if they've managed to get this working? - Zee.
There's also a WP plugin I wrote that does the same thing. This might be a good option for anyone who's not using feedburner. http://wordpress.org/extend... - Josh Fraser
Zee, I set this up for my Empoprise-BI blog, wrote a blog post (using Blogger), and six minutes after posting I haven't seen anything in Google Reader or FriendFeed yet. So if you're not getting advertised response, you're not the only one. I'll test again at a later time. - John E. Bredehoft

Nice to see XMPP more and more used on the web! It's a nice environment, also for cloud computing! - Egon Willighagen
Nice tech, strange name though. Wonder if Google has a projectname generator, feeds it some foundation words, and then watches it spew out 1,835391 suggestions in 20-sized chunks? Too bad they didn't pick up PubSubBuzz instead, rhymes better. Also, what was EVER WRONG with PubSubHubris? (fresh and full of promise). - ianf ⌘
This tech has been around for ages. It's getting much needed promotion right now, but it's not new. The name comes from XMPP's pubsub mechanism, with hubbub on the end. The option for PingShot has also been in Feedburner for months. - Marlin Forbes
I think that unless you have installed the pubsubhubbub plugin for wordpress, that feedburner still polls your content. It pushes your content out to other interested parties using the new mechanism, but it will still poll your feed. Correct? - Marlin Forbes
you can have wordpress ping feedburner under settings->writing add http://ping.feedburner.com - Tyler Gillies
great to see you talk today bret, thanks - sean percival

It isn't just CNN. If you look at online newspapers and other outlets before going to bed tonight you'd walk away with a different story and all sorts of analysis about how we will continue to deal with the old regime. That still may be the case, but you can tell this was a - Warner Crocker

CNN has access to Twitter and more. So why can't they give the proper attention to this story? - Donald Wilson
It's actually all so called TV news outlets. Internet is a better source of news. To be fair though, sometimes, on duty journalists/editors do not have the last say in what's covered as 'news'. Simple politics and ratings. I usually tune in to UK TV channels than I do US for news, that too very rarely. Sad but true. - Moushumi Kabir
I see more news from my Iranian friends than news TV news outlets. - Moushumi Kabir
Cnn lost. - Stalyn☂
My last thought on this, no matter what happens, US definitely needs to stay out. It's Iran's internal matter just as 2004 re-election of Bush was our internal matter. As shocking as it was to the rest of the world (I still struggle with the fact ppl I know actually voted for him - twice!!), US did vote for Bush the second time. - Moushumi Kabir

I really like Don Lemon but he seems to think CNN isn't doing anything wrong, which bugs me. http://twitter.com/donlemoncnn - Shawn Farner
CNN finally pipes up and mentions Facebook pictures inciting violence in Iran - but no update. Oh, yeah, and the fact that access to internet has been cut off. Is that the only news? Now on to the Letterman/Palin fight! I am heading back to online updates. - Liza + = ?
I often find US cable TV insular when it comes to foreign affairs - coverage of Barack Obama's recent speech in Egypt was a case in point. But CNN ignoring the Iranian protests is shameful. - Peter Dowley
I was always kinda of excited about the prospect of a 24 hour news network. Imagine how many more stories or how much more in-depth you could got on a single item. That really didn't happen. Covering stories, particularly any story happening outside NY or LA, is expensive. So we saw CNN put on a bunch of shows with pundits. They leaned to the left, so FOX could come along and lean to... more... - Matthew McCowan
Twitter is susceptible to manipulation by propagandists--for example the protests in Moldavia. In that case it was a legit election that the protesters just didn't like the result of. A flash mob does not a majority make. - Joe Knapp
Joe: good point, but many of us didn't fall for that crap and even then it cleaned itself out pretty quickly. - Robert Scoble
CNN died in 2001, when Tom Johnson retired. Quite a few of the top talent left around the same time, not wanting to be part of Jamie Kellner's efforts to be more like FOX. All these comments are so stupid and ill-informed. Not a single one of you has ever tried to take a camera crew into a totalitarian country. I have. You don't just walk around. Easy to twitter for one person. Very hard to get pictures! Go and try it, and until then. Shut up! - Prokofy Neva
@Sean, i agree we have witnessed a coup--the sustained fight lasting a week with people in the street every day, making police run away, NYT editorial by Reuel Marc Gerecth has a good analysis of what it means, and AlJazeera http://www.youtube.com/watch... has a good analysis. the action on the streets is having a huge effect, not just on Iran but on the Middle East. - Eleanor Wynn
Prokofy Neva, agreed that no new organizations can get in there, but any of the news channels could rebroadcast key videos, photographs and analysis of this very major geopolitical event--it is really disgusting to go through the TV channels and see the dreck that is on when something major is happening--our local news channels will cover a weather event non-stop, why doesn't a major channel cover this/ - Eleanor Wynn
the citizen journalism tells the story in a way noone else could. you are right there in the middle of the crowd with all the changes of pace and direction, the shaky camera itself tells a story and the sounds. it is like actually being there--that is why the twitter and youtube coverage is the real coverage--they don't have to process, package and add a local angle to it that waters down the effect - Eleanor Wynn

Aerosmith is grateful for ‘Guitar Hero’ - MUSIC- msnbc.com - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id...
Aerosmith may be nearly 40 years old, but the group is staying connected with younger audiences. The band is teaming up with “Guitar Hero” for their new tour, and they say the video game has helped them keep in touch with a younger generation of music lovers. “We have little kids coming up to us all the time asking us for this song and that song that they actually have no right asking about,” said Joe Perry, the group’s lead guitarist. “I mean, songs from records from 20, 30 years ago. It’s amazing.” - Leo Laporte

Thousands of Web sites stung by mass hacking attack - http://www.computerworld.com/action...
As many as 40,000 Web sites have been hacked to redirect unwitting victims to another Web site that tries to infect PCs with malicious software, according to security vendor Websense. The affected sites have been hacked to host JavaScript code that directs people to a fake Google Analytics Web site, which provides data for Web site owners on a site's usage, then to another bad site, said Carl Leonard, threat research manager for Websense. Those Web sites have likely been hacked via a SQL injection attack, in which improperly configured Web applications accept malicious data and get hacked, Leonard said. - Leo Laporte
