"Sorry but you are off topic completely. These are not icons but avatars that are chosen automatically before someone sets his own. Try to open an account on Flickr (not Flicker) and you will understand. If you were right about all this theory about "no normal photo will sit alongside these without being drowned by the ferocious colour clash" then all avatars that people choose had to be neutral. A visit to Flickr will prove to you that avatars can be of any possible colour and still the photo stands out."
