0.75 (926/1226) - still relatively new here
- mikepk
I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah Wittman
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.

from twhirl
0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren, Photophobe
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Her Lindsay-ness
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah Wittman
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah Wittman
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah Wittman
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah Wittman
Darn - 0.52. I guess I need to say why I like something a little more often :-) Liking this thread because I was wondering the same thing recently. Has anybody worked out the average from the numbers here? </islazy>
- Andy Bold
Andy, scroll upward and you'll see a couple calculations from before (January: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81)
- Micah Wittman
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah Wittman
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah Wittman
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah Wittman
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah Wittman
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren, Photophobe
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah Wittman
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah Wittman
0.89 (17818/19913) (Somebody better make a cool ass graph of all this data!)
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
OK, so statistically, what ratio results in better interaction on FF?
- Jason Huebel
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah Wittman
So I'm fairly balanced, it appears. I would imagine it's because I try to comment on every post I like. That's not always true, obviously. But mostly it is.
- Jason Huebel
Just clicking "Like" seems too easy. I feel like I should say something, too.
- Jason Huebel
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah Wittman
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren, Photophobe
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.

If you are sharing a presentation so people in the room can ref the slides later than that is wonderful, but when did Slideshare become a content. Am I missing something?
- Keith - @tsudo
If you want to really rock an audience, get those 40 slides all together, give handouts, then do the presentation without any AV, no project, maybe a whiteboard. And YOU. Get the content, get it in sequence, even if you miss a slide or two. YOU are the value in the presentation, and if you can pull that off, you hit a homerun. And from my experience, the people in the room will NEVER forget you. Been there. Done that.
- Ken Camp
Nice idea. Even if you are in a tech conference you can link to the slideshare. I don't discound the value of a well designed presentation but so often people link to a slideshare and its little more than titles OR it is intended to be read not presented.

Perhaps its a new form of a graphical blog post. I'm not sure. Just trying to understand the trend.

I've unfollowed a lot of accounts on Twitter, but I've only unfollowed one person publicly and that's because he was so annoying. That was the only Unfollow Saturday I ever announced. Otherwise, I do it quietly. I haven't yet had to notify anybody that I had to unfollow them because otherwise I wouldn't be able to follow anybody else on Twitter. And I haven't yet unsubscribed to anybody...

One of the key things that keep me sane while social networking = selective hearing (seeing). Otherwise, Twitter, FriendFeed, Facebook, et al., make me want to HULK SMASH my screen :)
- Mona Nomura
I recommend treating the background as a left aligned sidebar. Since monitor and resolution size varies widely it's difficult to ensure that you're background image will be viewed as you intended. The majority of folks see at least 200-250px left side bar.
- Keith - @tsudo
I dig the logo display and I think it's important for branding but in this case I think the images are the more powerful message. I'd put the images up top and size the logo a bit smaller and put in at the bottom.
- Keith - @tsudo
I am removing mine. It looks find on most screens assuming the resoluition insn't like 600x800. But on my netbook, the Twitter page completely engulfs my sidebar. I think I found a better solution though.
- Anika
-Full disclosure- I have no graphical talent and my 2 cents should be coupled with the advice from an expert that knows what they are talking about... ;)
- Keith - @tsudo
If you see my current template (http://twitter.com/faboomama), I have that bar on top. I think I could put some of my info there.
- Anika
that's a good idea since the topbar stays similar regardless of aspect resolution. Never the less, I like the sidebar image. Trying to make the majority happy and I'm sure netbookers are used to graphical trade offs.

"I hate to admit that your post really made me chuckle. I’m a network engineer and while I relate to your clarification of who is and who is not a technologist I think it’s important to remember that the more technology is adopted and integrated the better it is for the tech purists. In the end if people are using technology to make their lives better then I don’t care what they call themselves. Geeks will always know the difference. Honestly, we can’t expect too much from HR managers ;) Enjoyed the post."

Just spent an hour catching up with friends who don't use either, and I'm exhausted.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
lol I agree. I loathe Facebook. It's okay for keeping up with a few friends and their pictures but I vastly prefer Twitter and Friendfeed
- Keith - @tsudo
Question. Everyone says this....but why? What specific reasons cause you to think Facebook sucks?
- Maxamad (Amazigh)
There are various reasons from several perspectives (usability, ownership of data, etc.). Yesterday, I spent lot of time removing apps I never use and didn't even remember adding. I added a bunch of Friendfeeders who I now consider close enough to a different Friend List so they could see my photo albums, and there's no way to easily let them know. Adding a bunch of people to a...

Can't edit your own status updates or comments. See ridiculous suggestions made to you all the time to write on someone's wall and suggest friends to someone. Even help someone get a profile photo!
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
@Mehmet: Facebook does not promote discovery. I only get content from those I'm friends with and the meta (likes, comments) are not as robust because of the interface. It's about seeing more from the people you already know versus FriendFeed which is about learning about things through people I know and don't know. And the UI is just simply horrendous and distracting in relation to discovery. I don't want a MafiaWars update in the middle of my feed.
- AJ Kohn
Better: do a search here on Friendfeed, and I'm sure you will find many more specific responses to your question. That will save all of us a lot of time. :)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Almost makes you think Twitter should offer a scaling option based on resolution size.
- Keith - @tsudo
You know, I had assumed they had since you can put your own background on there. But then I remember someone who runs his computer at 800 x??? That he couldn't see my background. At that time we had a 15" laptop, 17" laptop, 19" monitor and a 42" monitor. The background only looked good on the laptops and the 19" monitor. Twitter on the 42" one and the 24" we have now, looks ridiculous. I didn't expect this to happen on the netbook, which has a 10" screen.
- Anika
I hate the 600px height resolution on netbooks, end up having some dialog boxes chopped off
- Andrew Trinh
from IM
Oh yes. Makes me appreciate those few websites that all me to move the box around. Otherwise, I need to go full-screen just to save changes. Silly.
- Anika
I can't even fullscreen it because it's an OS dialog box, I just have to Tab it until I hope it hits it.
