I disagree that "left pseudoscience" is harmless -- see: people who forgo cancer treatment in favor of "alternative medicine"; vaccine deniers.
- Tudor Bosman
Agreed, the anti-vaxxers and quacks and snake oil salesman definitely cause harm, but I think the main contrast the author makes is how one side has embraced anti-science as a political platform, and whatever support on the other side there is for non-science and pseudoscience, it's certainly not symmetrical.
- Victor Ganata
Denying global climate change, or at least human involvement is a stance of the right. Anti-vaccine is not a stance of the left. It's not equivalent.

Not the smoking gun Tesla wants it to be. Looking at the graphs, Broder did turn down (and then off) the cabin heat, but 30-40 miles later than indicated; this could be an honest mistake. "Driving around in circles" near the supercharger could be explained by looking around for it -- and even if it was on purpose, what better place to test the actual range than next to a charging...

- Tudor Bosman
I like the map of all the other changing stations he drove by.
- Brian Johns
Oh, I think the clear indications of unplugging from charging stations early are pretty smoky, along with the rest of that and the "reporter's" clear, stated bias against electric cars. But I'm sure the NYT will find a way to avoid blame.
- Walt Crawford
Yeah, that was Broder's original rebuttal before the detailed blog post from Tesla. The NYT's public editor promised a new Wheels blog post today; still not published yet. http://publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com/2013...
- Andrew C (✓)
Unfortunately, unless Tesla records all customer phone interactions and can retrieve them, this has devolved into a "Who do you trust?" situation. I'd *love* to know just what Broder actually asked the customer reps and what he was told in response...since I find the reported interactions just this side of unbelievable. (But, of course, no NYT reporter has ever, EVER fudged the facts...)
- Walt Crawford
["Just this side of unbelievable:" some of the advice he claims to have been given violates the laws of physics, as one instance. Hard to believe Tesla's people are quite that ignorant or insane. Unless they really, really hate their jobs and want to undermine the company.]
- Walt Crawford
Don't suppose Tesla outsourced their call center and had undertrained (untrained?) folks working the phones? That never happens, right?
- Ken Gidley
That's the most plausible explanation, although some of the advice he claims to have received is hard to explain by simple incompetence or lack of training.
- Walt Crawford

Are you saying a male and female lead vocalist in the same song, or are you also counting background vocals?

Yeah, Mark, along those lines we should include Sonny & Cher, Peaches & Herb, Richard & Linda Thompson, and Mitch & Mickey from A Mighty Wind.

Hookuh, I'm thinking more of lead vocalists (so I probably shouldn't have listed The Cardigans).

Heh, Vicster, nice, I wasn't thinking about the "family" groups but they definitely fit.

Or Fleetwood Mac for that matter. Most of their songs are one lead vocalist only with the rest of the vocals being background.

I sometimes imagine that the whole idea that cold iron protects you against magic came from a mistranslation of an arcane ancient text that actually read "iron cannot undergo spontaneous nuclear fusion"
You probably mean fission. Nothing can undergo spontaneous nuclear fusion.
- Tudor Bosman
Spontaneous nuclear fusion powers the sun. All elements lighter than cobalt are formed by stellar fusion in the core. That's why Carl Sagan says we're made of star stuff.
- Victor Ganata
I am, though, using "spontaneous" in the sense of "releases more energy than consumes". Obviously, it takes a lot of activation energy to get two atomic nuclei to overcome their electromagnetic repulsion.
- Victor Ganata
I really kind of don't want this to happen, no matter who the director is. What are they going to do? Rehash old lore? Or make up some random shit that doesn't really have anything to do with WC or WoW so long as it has dragons, orcs, and elves?
- Victor Ganata
Video games to movie translations haven't had a good track record. I don't expect this venture to be any different. It'll probably be an Indiana Jones type movie with Brann Bronzebeard.

On the plus side, at least it's not Uwe Boll, amirite? :D Yeah, I'm surprised they're still moving forward with this. When we didn't hear about it for a couple of years I assumed someone finally went "Y'know...our window of opportunity passed after Wrath, so...let's focus on something interesting for once."
- Hookuh Tinypants
Yes, Mike Morhaime himself said that they'd rather not make the film than let Uwe Boll have at it. Best interview ever. :) But that being said...I'm thoroughly ambivalent about a WoW movie at this point. I think it's just...by the time it releases, it will be WAY past relevant. I would have enjoyed the hell out of a WoW movie during the Wrath period. That would have been incredible. But now it's just...like Blizzard is clinging to sad notions of WE WERE HUGE ONCE!

There's a lot of lore in the Warcraft universe that could make for beautiful, cinematic stories. I, for one, am looking forward to this movie.

I too was impressed by the relative quickness and low-level discomfort of the process, despite the fact that lots of things seemed to be coming and going throughout. Wishing you a speedy recovery! Also, ibuprofen.

Most common dental procedures (fillings, crowns, root canals) are relatively painless these days -- more annoying than anything else. Ask for steroids (prednisone) to reduce swelling, or at the very least stock up on ibuprofen.

All things being equal, when ordering a menu item "WITH NO [PICKLE, for instance]", should the front-line staff A) interject "It doesn't come with [pickles]", or B) say "Okay"?
A so you know not to worry about it next time. B because it doesn't matter
- Todd Hoff
That's the thing, "all else being equal" means in the hypothetical it's not known if it's a 'regular' (customer) situation or not.
- Micah
I prefer A. Because it's reassuring. "Don't worry, that's not even an option. Even if the fry cook is stoned, you're still safe." sort of a thing.
- Marianne
In my brief experience in the food service industry, I employed option A because it gave the customer reassurance that the item wouldn't inexplicably end up on their food anyway, and let them know for possible future orders. But you have to find the right way to say it. Just blurting out IT DOESN'T COME WITH PICKLES is more offending than friendly. :)
- Hookuh Tinypants
I really think it depends on how A was said. If it was said in a "Wow, you're a moron" tone then obviously it's unacceptable. Otherwise I think it's ok. But if they give you pickles even after you asked for none, then destroy them!

Unfortunately, my experience has been (B) followed by the item arriving with pickles. So as a customer, I'd go for (A). Or, you know, (C).

As an environmentalist, and someone who believes that everyone in this world has a right to a healthy and nutritious diet of their choosing, I could not have chosen a more counter-productive path. I now regret it completely. So I guess you’ll be wondering – what happened between 1995 and now that made me not only change my mind but come here and admit it? I'm a bit disappointed in my new Kindle Fire. This is the first Kindle I've used. I find the usability generally low. The battery life is not really long enough. And it takes forever to recharge. - http://www.amazon.com/gp...
They only include a USB charger in the box. After 4 hours of charging, it's only back up to 30%. They sell an "accelerated charger" (an A/C adapter) separately for $20. Seems to me it should have been included.

Sir Shuping, yes, second gen Fire (not Fire HD). I got it for myself during the big sale after Thanksgiving, although now the regular price is pretty close to what I paid.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Stephen, I'm planning on upgrading to the Paperwhite (my poor eyes!) once I have enough credits. I'll have to keep an eye on that weeks vs hours thing.
- Soup in a TARDIS
I got the Fire HD 8.9 on the big post-Thanksgiving sale, and it's great for what it is. You're not going to get weeks of battery life *and* color: Just not gonna happen. Seems to me Amazon regularly sells the $20 charger for $10 (it's a little beefier than the usual AC/USB thing you can pick up anywhere: 1.8amp rather than 0.8amp.) If you mostly want a book reader, you should stick with a regular Kindle or Nook, not a Fire.
- Walt Crawford
[The HD 8.9 is consistently providing 10-11 hours of actual use between charges, which is exactly what it's supposed to provide. And the HD resolution is, for us, what made it worthwhile.]
- Walt Crawford
Walt, thanks, I'll keep an eye on the adapter going on sale. $10 is lot more palatable. I see they sell it for $10 if you buy it with a Kindle, but $20 after the fact. I think that's a bit unfriendly. I wanted a device that could stream VOD, so that's why I picked a Fire rather than an e-Reader, But I guess I was spoiled by the battery performance I get from my gen 1 iPad. I didn't time...

- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
That sucks it doesn't include a AC adapter. Charging through a computer is extremely slow. Probably at 500mA. An iPad will still drain when plugged into a computer. The iPad adapter puts out 2.1 amps.
- Rodfather
I got a Kindle Paperwhite and I'm using the AC charger from my old Kindle.Apparently my home computer isn't powerful enough to charge it by USB. Battery life is listed at 8 weeks IF you read for 1/2 hr a day. Since I read for more like 5 hrs a day your mileage may vary.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
The Kindle Fire HD is basically a 7" Android tablet. Or a big phone. The screen is high res, crisp, and bright which is the main factor for the drain. So yeah, 7-8 hours of video sounds about right.
- Rodfather
Stephen: I absolutely 100% agree that Amazon should have include the charger (it's not really an adapter), or at least should always sell it for $10. Complain to them? (The HD 8.9 does indeed charge in 5 hours or less using the charger.) The Paperwhite still uses e-ink, so the battery life should be many times as long.
- Walt Crawford
I missed that they didn't include the charger...mine included the ac charger, but no usb cable and I had to buy it separately. I wonder if they switched because people complained about it having the ac adapter, but no usb?
- Sir Shuping is just sir
I wish Amazon allowed their apps to run on other Android tablets. There's no Amazon Instant Video app for Android but there is for iOS. The 'Immersion Reading' sounds really cool too.
- Rodfather
@m9m, would you say you could get 1-2 weeks if reading 1-2 hours a day? I have the 1st gen iPad and while I can get a good 5-7 hours of heavy reading use, I'm finding the daily charge annoying.
- Soup in a TARDIS
@Soup -Well, anyway you slice it, you get about 28 hours on a charge. I just park my Kindle on the charging cord while I'm busy so it never really dies out. If I forget, it doesn't take very long to recharge. One overnite will do it. BTW I love the Paperwhite, even though I feel disloyal to my old Kindle. My eyes really need the bright screen and I like choosing the font style as well as the size.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Yeah, I want it for vision reasons. Crappy eyes.

- MiniMage
I think I'll pick up this PowerGen dual port 2.1A 10W AC adapter (http://www.amazon.com/PowerGe...) -- seems to work well for iPads and Kindles, which will be handy. It's $9.99 right now and has a 4.5 star rating. In the meantime, my Kindle is still recharging, just hit 85%. So I estimate about 11.5 hours to fully recharge from nothing.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
i have a Kindle Fire HD and it's been pretty groovy in all respects, no complaints.

Are you sure there isn't something wrong with your Fire? My mother's school bought 75 of them and had to return 6 of them, the Amazon returns agent mentioned that was a phenomenal return rate. Apparently they tend to have lots of errors (and Amazon, of course, just deals with that with replacement)
- Soup in a TARDIS
BTW, the proper AC adapter makes a huge difference -- recharges from 0 to 100 in about 3 hours instead of 12+. Not bundling it with the Kindle is a terrible decision on Amazon's part, I think.

The e-Ink Kindles have battery life measured in weeks to months, not hours to days. It really is the display that makes all the difference. The $69 e-Ink Kindle is great in addition to a tablet -- cheap (so it's not a huge deal if you lose it or break it) and has great contrast in sunlight. Of course I’m not opposed to this in theory, because in theory is the only place where it would be conceivably valid or reliable. Alcohol prohibition didn't work, organized crime made millions selling the stuff to willing patrons in speakeasys. What in the hell makes anyone think prohibition for guns will work? It won't because the only people that will have guns ARE THE CRIMINALS! It doesn't matter if the 2nd Amendment is repealed or not. The only people that would effect are law abiding citizens. Go ahead and trust your local police dept. and let me know how well that works for you.

Lets not forget that he recently took the Horde's greatest hero (Thrall) and made him neutral, then replaced him with a Warchief that was not only incompetent but unlikable, not from just a roleolay standpoint but from a real life perspective. Territory gains yes, moral gains no. Before Garrosh it was easier to say that both sides could see themselves as "the good guys" after Garrosh the Horde took a hard turn which towards away from that.
