That’s because the 33-year-old has set an astonishing new world record by becoming the first person to visit all 201 countries of the world - without flying. I feel like I've heard people say it is tricky getting the Airport to work with PCs. Am I imagining that? Probably. Reassure me. I might get one too. We have two macs, two PCs and iphone.
- Laura Norvig
I have a Netgear N600 and it works well! Great coverage throughout my home.. and even on my patio. :)
- Lois Loves LB and Mr. B
I've only set up an Airpot using a Mac (specifically the Airport Utility that's in the Mac's Utilities folder). That part couldn't be simpler. If you've got one Mac, you're all set. Any other device using the router just needs the SSID and passphrase. I've probably owned a dozen or so over the years (Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Cisco...) and the Airport is exactly what you'd expect from Apple.
- Ken Sheppardson
(I.e. incredibly simple/intuitive UI, great performance, and probably overpriced ;-)
- Ken Sheppardson
setting up an airport on a pc running windows is exactly the same as setting it up on a mac: using the airport utility. If you have neither windows nor mac in the house, then it's as useful as a brick.
- DJF
I bought my Airport in 2007 or 2008 and it's still working like it's brand new.
- Akiva
I look at it like this: before I bought an Airport, I was having to replace my wi-fi router maybe once every 18 months (Linksys would start overheating, Netgear would need constant rebooting, Belkin would simply stop working, etc.). I haven't had to replace my Airport in four+ years. So there's an initial investment but in the long run, it's more cost effective.
- Akiva
I've had the same experience as Akiva. Happy with my aging Airport.
- RepoRat
Of the non-Apple ones, I'd probably recommend a D-Link; it's the only brand of home / small-office networking equipment that has been consistently reliable in the 10+ years that I've been buying these things.
- Tudor Bosman
My Belkin has been working fine since 2008. Oh well. I'll look at the budget.

Outside of the Airport, I had best of luck with Belkin.
- Akiva
But, in my experience, once a wifi router starts dying on you, it'd going to continue to do so. Until then, it's a battle of attrition: how many times are you willing to reboot it, give it a hard reset, etc., before you finally get fed up and replace it.
- Akiva
My experience has actually been that what dies are the cheapo modems (DSL in our case, Motorola, previously 2Wire combined modem/router). The wifi router we got after we gave up on the 2Wire has done just fine (D-Link). Need to unplug it maybe once a month or less, and even then it's usually really the modem.
- Walt Crawford
Well, I really ought to buy a cable modem, too, because I rent this one from the cable company. Sigh.

I rent mine as well. One time I bought one and when I switched providers, I couldn't get anyone to buy it. It ended up going to a PC recycle facility.

"I, too, exhibit ironic tendencies. For example, I find it difficult to give sincere gifts. Instead, I often give what in the past would have been accepted only at a White Elephant gift exchange: a kitschy painting from a thrift store, a coffee mug with flashy images of “Texas, the Lone Star State,” plastic Mexican wrestler figures. Good for a chuckle in the moment, but worth little in the long term. Something about the responsibility of choosing a personal, meaningful gift for a friend feels too intimate, too momentous. I somehow cannot bear the thought of a friend disliking a gift I’d chosen with sincerity. The simple act of noticing my self-defensive behavior has made me think deeply about how potentially toxic ironic posturing could be."

I'm sure it's useful for something... I guess don't use URL.equals(), if you don't need the full response checking?
- Jimminy IS Everybody
It's nice to be able to check that you're looking at the same object, regardless of the string representation of the URL. An example, 127.0.0.1/file/x.html equals localhost/file/x.html. Though I'm sure there are some extremely rare edge cases where the IP that responds isn't a match.
- Jimminy IS Everybody
Jimminy, even that may not be good all the time. Lets say we convert the name to an IP and even eliminate the protocol (http vs https). Still there are cases that your equals method would fail. One example is when a domain has multiple IP addresses. Another is when a server is not a dedicated server and hosts multiple domains. In that case, a URI of a domain could falsely match with a URI of another domain.
- ؛ patrick
I don't know, I'd assume a simple 301 or 302 would be followed, within reasonable depth. But I haven't touched Java in a long time.

No way! Was that a parody or did the campaign really jump the gun like that?
- Spidra Webster
I don't think it was a parody; of course the campaign folks had to have the site ready, so they could flip to it quickly if Mitt won. Someone (either an insider, or someone who found a hidden link to it somewhere on the regular site) saw it and took a screenshot.

With Paul's departure from Facebook today (November 12, 2010), I've heard several FFers talk about who's still at Facebook. I've seen various different numbers, none of which I think are accurate. This is my attempt to be more accurate. Information comes from publicly available sources where available. I drew on the list of FF employees from http://friendfeed.com/about... and http://blog.friendfeed.com/.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Overall status as of November 2010: Of the 14 people who were ever FriendFeed employees, 8 are still at Facebook (Ana Y., Ben G., Bret T., Casey M., Dan H., Jim N., Sanjeev S., and Tudor B), 5 have departed from Facebook (Ben D., Gary B., Kevin F., Paul B., Ross M.), and 1 is unknown (Goutham P.).
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
OK, took some editing but I think the above is accurate. If anyone knows where Ross M. or Goutham P. are now, please let me know!

Updated Jim's entry. He's apparently left Facebook. (I think I remember him confirming this when I had lunch with him last month!)

Overall status as of May 2012: Of the 14 people who were ever FriendFeed employees, 7 are still at Facebook (Ana Y., Ben G., Bret T., Casey M., Dan H., Sanjeev S., and Tudor B), 6 have departed from Facebook (Ben D., Gary B., Jim N., Kevin F., Paul B., Ross M.), and 1 is unknown (Goutham P.).

I am so going to wallow in schadenfreude at all the hardcore Star Wars fans nerdraging, wailing, gnashing their teeth, and rending their garments about how Disney is ruining the franchise.
True fans understand that this is a blessing. A lot of 'hardcore' fans I see are simply people who see the Star Wars universe as the films...

I also see a lot of people who are fans of being fans and ignore the source material.

Oh, man. The bitter arguments about who is a *true* Star Wars fan and who is just a mouse-eared sellout and who is just a narrow-minded, misguided originalist are also going to be schadenfreude material.
- Victor Ganata

There is a difference between a "narrow-minded, misguided originalist" and a "person who speaks with the same authority on a subject as observing Grand Central Station through a rusty keyhole".

And this is all even before Episodes 7, 8, and 9 come out. I love it.
- Victor Ganata
I think you may find opportunity to enjoy lashings of schadenfreude to be sparse. Amongst the masses of other Star Wars fans I follow, I haven't seen any disappointment that Disney has bought Lucasfilm. I'd say cautious optimism. There isn’t even any real debate about IF the final 3 films should be made. The only debate I see at the moment is if Lucas should have anything to do with them.
- Johnny
Nah, it's already happening. Just look at the comments of any news article about it. For once, it amuses me greatly. (Of course, news article comments: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.)
