Discuss: Did the 'Avatar' Trailer Ruin the Buzz?
If ever there was a trailer launch cluster-f*ck, it was this morning with the supposed release of the first Avatar trailer. The domestic trailer was scheduled to hit Apple at 10am EST, but that never happened and there was no immediate explanation as to why it wasn't working. But god bless the French because they got their trailer up and running in time for most people to ... um, kinda trash it. Granted, Avatar supporters will try to reason with you, offering up several different explanations: 1) You need to watch it in HD, or 2) You can't watch it on your computer screen, or 3) You need to watch it in 3D, or 4) You need to watch it in 3D on an IMAX screen, or 5) You need to watch it on Pandora with a half-naked Na'vi chick lying in your lap feeding you glowing blue goo. In my opinion, though, a trailer is a trailer -- and no matter how we watch it or where we watch it, a potential paying customer should be able to evaluate it without having to add a bunch of junk to the viewing... - Bluesun 2600

Quite happy with my Asus Eee 1000HE after a month's use

After a month with my Asus Eee 1000HE netbook I am still very happy with it. Bought a +1GB upgrade (for a total 2GB) and a Logitech Bluetooth mouse to go with it. It's a wonderful, cool, good-looking, reasonably priced, light-weight and all-round great little machine. It's great for watching dl'ed videos in the train, checking and replying email, using Twitter and surfing/reading blogs, writing down notes & ideas on the go. My only grievance is that the shift keys are a bit on the tiny side, especially the right one takes some getting used to. But it's quickly learned and I type almost as fast on this machine now as on my other "ordinary" laptop, which I find I use less and less, since the Eee is so easily portable and has such long battery life. The small screen takes some getting used to too when you come from a larger working environment, and it is not ideal for longer more intensive types of computer work. Also be aware that some web services have yet to learn to design for the... more... - Morten Blaabjerg from email
He he, I'm still happy with my Acer One after 1/2 year of use, too. What OS do you have there...? - Hanna Wiszniewska
I tried making it a dual WinXP/Linux but the Linux install wasn't nearly as fast as the XP install surprisingly and had lots of problems with the wireless. Wireless is the Achilles' heel of Linux for me. If that doesn't work and won't work - why bother? So I ended up with a full XP, and it runs surprisingly well :-) - Morten Blaabjerg
I'm not an expert in Asus but I suppose you would have to have customized kernel to run Linux on yours. I have such one on my Acer (namely Kuki kernel) - it runs like a dream - everything is working and works instantly no matter which distro I run on it :) - Hanna Wiszniewska
Sounds sweet :-) The Eee does run Linux and there's even some pre-packaged distros specifically for the Eee - Eeebuntu. But I find Wireless to be the biggest problem. Do you find you have trouble making that work? I find it's been a lot of hazzle every time I tried making the switch. Too miuch hazzle for my liking... When I did manage to get wireless access, it was way to unreliable and would frequently just go offline for no apparent reason. While in XP; no such thing ever happens. - Morten Blaabjerg
Well, I have absolutely no problems with Wireless (no matter where in the world I'm connecting ;) ). As for now I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Remix but with the kernel I mentioned (I was trying other distro and had no problem either). Perhaps, you could find the pre-compiled kernel for the exact model of your Asus or compile it yourself...? (Arch forum and Wiki have a lot of info :) - Hanna Wiszniewska
Thanks! That is key then. I have written a big fat memo to stick behind my ear till the next time I make the attempt. - Morten Blaabjerg
He he, if I come across such kernel I will let you know! :) - Hanna Wiszniewska
