VA – Next Stop Soweto 4: Zulu Rock, Afro Disco & Mbaqanga 1975-1985 (2015) -
London-based label Strut Records releases the latest edition of their ‘Next Stop Soweto’ series with Next Stop Soweto 4: Zulu Rock, Afro-Disco, & Mbaqanga 1975-1985. According to Strut, this era of South Africa’s musical history saw such genres as funk and soul being played by bands even as apartheid firmly gripped the country’s music culture. It was a time in which energetic American bands like War and Yes, along with SA’s own malombo type of music, spurred homegrown groups like Kabana and Harari to incorporate soul and rock into their sound along with Zulu lyrics. Even though South African music was burgeoning in these years, there were parallel difficulties. Bands would still perform, for instance, but curfews, along with their songs receiving little airplay,… 320 kbps | 158 MB UL | HF | MC ** FLAC …made it very hard for these groups to survive professionally. Lead Belly – The Smithsonian Folkways Collection (2015) -
Prestige box sets of pre-rock music that out-price the casual fan or curious newcomer tend to emphasize an artist’s importance and influence, carefully delineating his or her legacy across subsequent generations of followers. You listen because it’s good for you, is the implication, which is certainly worthwhile as far as that goes. But rarely is this type of retrospective quite as much fun as Lead Belly: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection. It’s not only the first full career retrospective of one of the most significant musicians of the twentieth century. It’s also a blast. We have an image of Lead Belly as a somber bluesman, a stoic song collector who wore a perpetually solemn expression like that on the cover of the new 5xCD set. That was,… 320 kbps | 705 MB UL | HF ** FLAC …of course, only one side of the musician, who memorized and personalized a vast array of American work songs, play songs, Tin Pan Alley hits, spirituals, blues, ballads, reels, hollers, jigs, calls, and more.... - snaga zloga
What the zombies tell us -
Below you will see an excerpt from the February 8, 2015 episode of “Walking Dead” on the AMC cable channel. Titled “What Happened and What’s Going On”, it is about the latest futile attempt by the characters to find a safe haven against zombies, in this instance a middle-class gated community that was formerly the home of Noah, an African-American youth who joined the band recently. Noah is accompanied by Tyreese, the older and powerfully built African-American who we see in the excerpt being attacked by Noah’s brother, who has been transformed into a zombie. I want to direct your attention to the radios that are shown in Noah’s house as Tyreese lies bleeding on the floor and later on when he is being rushed away in a car driven by Rick, the band’s leader. In both instances Tyreese is hallucinating since radio and television, and all civilized life, has come to an end. The radios play what sounds like BBC reporters commenting on Boko Haram or ISIS: “Four deadly attacks on the coastal... - snaga zloga
Baba Commandant & The Mandingo Band – Juguya (2015) -
Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band are a contemporary group from Burkina Faso. Coming from Bobo-Dioulasso, the group is steeped in the Mandingue musical traditions of their ancestral legacy. The enigmatic lead singer Baba Commandant (Mamadou Sanou) is an original and eccentric character who is well respected in the Burkinabé musical community. His current band — when he’s not playing with the now-famous Burkinabé musician Victor Démé — is the Mandingo Band. At present, he is a practitioner of the Afrobeat style, drawing inspiration from the golden era of Nigerian music. Fela Kuti/Africa 70 and King Sunny Adé are big influences, as is the legendary Malian growler Moussa Doumbia. VA – The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, vol. 2 (1928-1932) (2014) -
In 2103, Jack White’s Third Man Records teamed with the late John Fahey’s Revenant Records to release The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, vol. 1. Housed in an oak cabinet, the expensive object was an elaborate and comprehensive history lesson about the Paramount label, a Wisconsin company that issued early jazz and blues records. The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume 2 chronicles the period between 1928 and 1932, during which the Mississippi Delta blues genre was born. It features music by Skip James, Charley Patton, Son House, the Mississippi Sheiks, Tommy Johnson, Geeshie Wiley, Willie Brown, King Solomon Hill, and more spread over six LPs and a “sculpted metal” USB drive. In all, it contains 800 tracks from 175 artists. 320 kbps | 5.48 GB UL | HF | UP Money, you might have noticed, is on the mind of many musicians. VA – New Orleans Brass Bands: Through the Streets of the City (2015) -
For more than a century, the signature sound of New Orleans has been the brass band — at once a source of celebration, collective expression, and community pride. On February 10, Smithsonian Folkways released New Orleans Brass Bands: Through the Streets of the City, bringing together for the first time in one recording three musical generations that represent three dominant styles of brass bands. The 15-track, newly recorded collection spans the full spectrum of New Orleans brass band music, both as it exists today and extending back through the tradition’s history. Featured are the classic sound of the Liberty Brass Band, the modern-yet-traditional Treme Brass Band, and the funk, rap, and “bounce” influenced Hot 8 Brass Band. Fifty years ago this week, the Free Speech Movement at the University of California Berkeley reached its high point with a mass campus protest followed by an occupation of the administration building. When police moved in against protesters, the call for a student strike went out, and the campus was shut down in the coming days. The Free Speech Movement was the spark that set off the campus revolts of the late 1960s, where activism against the Vietnam War was the most prominent issue. But the Berkeley struggle's roots lay in the civil rights movement. Here, Dan Riazanov and Nicole Colson tell the history of the Free Speech Movement. will continue marking this anniversary tomorrow with an interview with Free Speech Movement participant Joel Geier. See Rio de Janeiro's Favelas Through the Lens of Young Residents’ Pinhole Cameras -
Santa Tereza, neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Photo by Juliana de Oliveira, published with permission. A can with a little hole and some duck tape. It sounds simple, but that's where the paradox resides. To photograph with a digital camera in auto mode, all you need to do is click. But a pinhole, the mother of all analog cameras, requires much more than that: a good dose of patience and concentration, for a start, but also an understanding of the basic principle of photography, which is controlling light. After that, some imagination, inspiration and encouragement will do the rest. At least that is what the “Mão na Lata” (Hand on can) project is about. It consists of distributing pinhole cameras to teenagers from 12 to 18 years old in Complexo da Maré, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro comprising of 16 favelas where about 130,000 people live. From the crafting of the cameras, made with powdered milk cans, to the developing of the negatives, everything is done by the participants... - snaga zloga
Slučaj Perković-Mustač: gdje završava socijalizam, a gdje počinje kapitalizam? -
Vijesti i nadopune (u budućnosti vjerojatno možemo očekivati i “obrate”) s nedavno započetog suđenja Josipu Perkoviću i Zdravku Mustaču, bivšim funkcionerima jugoslavenskih i hrvatskih tajnih službi, u domaćim medijima izranjaju u tjednom ritmu televizijske krimi-serije. - snaga zloga
