what was the car? I was thinking it might be a Tesla

- Leo Laporte
I heard him say what brand it was by accident last week.
- Chris Heath
yeah 17mpg is shocking, but as you barely drive it doesn't really matter
- Mark
leo is the twit tv channel going to work on tivo? as well as roku?

I am actually surprised they still make 17MPG cars though

Jim, he's said that it would eventually... it is something that twit wants to do (not sure if they're currently working to get that done though)

I hope it's soon I would hate to have to buy a roku when I already have a tivo hd.

Item 1: Windows 7 Upgrade - The good, the bad, the ugly Some people are having problems I've been speaking with Ed Bott about this, and we're trying to work through it Microsoft is not helping, and they've actually accused people of breaking the law by clean installing Windows with Upgrade media. This is almost always completely wrong. The issue: Microsoft fooled people into buying...

I had W7 beta on my PC (purchased originally with Vista native), purchased the full RC and did a clean install. No problems other than having to reinstall some apps.
- Christopher Gambol
OK, I hope you bring this back around to what we're actually supposed to do... I'm going to be installing one of my 3 Amazon-purchased upgrade licenses on a rebuilt desktop this weekend--from which I've already wiped XP to install the RC--on a new, clean disk... what is it Microsoft wants me to do?
- Ken Sheppardson
You installed the RC, or you installed the purchased version, Christopher?
- Ken Sheppardson
On a related note RE Win 7 install... I actually emailed Paul on this... if I have a 30GB SSD and a 1TB+ hard drive, what's the optimal way to install Windows 7? Put everything on the SSD and use the HDs just for data, i.e. the "Users" directory? Put "Program Files" on the HD? Install to the hard drive and just use the SSD for pagefile.sys or something?...
- Ken Sheppardson
...is it even worth it to mess with a split config like this? Hard drives are getting bigger, small SSDs are cheap...
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken - sorry I should specify. I installed the purchased final version (pre purchase through Microsoft store and downloaded) on top of the RC. Did I get that right? I had Vista, then got the W7 beta and did a clean install.
- Christopher Gambol
I always have separate Windows and Data partitions or drives. I usually make a separate partition for the pagefile and temp files as well. But don't use an SSD for the pagefile - it will burn it out prematurely. I put Windows and Programs on an SSD and data/temp files/pagefile on a mechanical drive.
- Leo Laporte
So is RC or beta to Window 7 production is considered an upgrade? Hmm..
- Ken Sheppardson
I've historically always had a D: partition for "Data"... not putting the pagefile on the SSD is a good tip. Thanks, Leo ... I wish there were a guide for doing this somewhere... maybe on some sort of super Windows site... ;-) I'd have to think a small SSD + big HD is going to be a more and more common machine config.
- Ken Sheppardson
You are going to run into the same problem when your HD dies and you bought the Upgrade version. Now you mostly likely not going to have old media.
- Philip Griego
Ken - I kept hearing and reading Paul's advice that a clean install was better than an upgrade. So for $50 I got the full W7 production software and installed it. It works very well.... absolutely no problems aside from having to reload some games and apps.
- Christopher Gambol
I just came across this while reading about net neutrality, and I think it applies here as well:

Seems to me Microsoft should be giving away the OS, so they can sell more copies of Office. Razor/razorblade thing. But that's a bigger convo. :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Thank god we have people like Paul, that are willing to sort through this situation; even though it's his given profession.
- mark dekruyter
If you do a "Custom" install, but don't format your drive and setup creates a backup of your Windows folder, does it delete "Program Files" and other installation-created directories that contain non-Microsoft data?
- Steve Mesik
All these requirements for a previous version somewhere are BS. Either let me enter the key for a version that's eligible for upgrade or worst case let it validate off media.

On today's show (tease): Why patches are impossible, the Total (In)security virus, and why writing software shouldn't be too easy. Program note: John Graham-Cumming, http://www.jgc.org/, won't be joining us today as planned to talk about the problem with Javascript. We'll re-schedule in a couple of weeks.

Can i point out that twit started by talking about Edward Bernays who said "If you can influence the leaders, either with or without their conscious cooperation, you automatically influence the group which they sway". Isn't a windows 7 party unconscious cooperation? disclosure is irrelevant.
- russtbarnacle
The Windows 7 parties is pure genious on behalf of Microsoft. It cost them next to nothing and they get all the techheads talking about it 24/7 + the videos went viral.
- Morten Hovland

- Eric Geller
I don't know Eric. It belongs to Blogworld. The stream failed during the speech unfortunately so we couldn't capture it. It wasn't one of my best speeches though - so you're not missing anything!
- Leo Laporte
Leo, let's face it, your worst speech is better than most others' best speeches. But at least we will soon get the benefits of your announcement: video episodes!
