Saddleback Co. Leather Briefcase - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Dec 1, 2009 Probably the most awesome and manly man-bag ever created. Super tough, an awesome blend of technical and traditional construction, and the kind of style that is pretty hard to fake. The price is hard to deal with: $500 and up. On the bright side it comes with a 100 year warranty and encouragement to mention this warranty in your will. "They'll fight over it when you're gone" My favorite color- Dark Tobacco Brown. Ernest Alexander Messenger Bag - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Nov 24, 2009 Steep price, but a great bag. Fits a laptop and just enough stuff to make it a useful carry on. Still slim enough for everyday use. Super high quality, very cool styling, and every little detail done well. Handmade in NYC apparently. And the Bonobos guys say they are cool, so you'll have them in your corner. One bad- the main straps are old school buckles. They should have used snaps or magnets, anything quicker. Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto by Stewart Brand - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Nov 6, 2009 A really really great book. Easily occupies a place on my top 10 favorite books of all time shelf. My favorite part about Brand is that he spends as much time working on how to think as he does on what to think. So while the book is as a whole is about the preservation and advancement of our civilization, it's also a great book about APPLIED decision science, organizational behavior, various particular fields of study, engineering, and history, and much more. Probably one of these best guides about how to think through problems and how to understand how organizations- from business up to nations- react when faced with decisions (and how to persuade them). As a fellow engineer, he see the world a lot like I do (in his won words as a series of solvable design challenges), so it all just resonates. Recommended by Tyson on Oct 7, 2009 I'm pretty tall and one of my morning pet peeves is getting waaaay low to rinse my mouth after brushing my teeth. I'm far too lazy to keep a glass nearby (and keep it clean) so this tooth brush is goddamn genius. Amrom "All Cash" money clip - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Oct 7, 2009 I'm a money clip guy, but I've always had a problem with the aesthetic. Something garish and oldman-ish about it. This "All Cash" money clip from superinventor Amrom is perfect for me. An ultra thin minimilist design- it has the same feel and size as the cash it holds. I've got one in pesos and one in Canadian $. Gerber Crucial Multi-Tool - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Aug 13, 2009 Only the crucial components: Knife (w/ serrated section), pliers, screwdrivers, bottle opener, wire cutter. Super light, very cool design, and comfortable to use. My Leatherman Wave has never let me down, but it sure is heavy. I'm going to give the Crucial a try and see if I miss all the extra tools. Dorian Grays -Silver stretch wool trousers by Bonobos - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Jul 28, 2009 These are my 5th pair of Bonobos and are my go-to pant for casual weddings and vegas trips this summer. I keep going back to the Bonobos trough because they are high quality, are always original colors/materials, and are long enough to fit my 36" inseam. Like in the photo, paired with white shoes, a white or pink shirt, and a black v-neck, these things aren't even fair. Iphone Document Scanner - corrugated board - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Jul 28, 2009 A really elegant and useful thing for a small/low cost office- use your iphone as a document scanner. This holds the phone just high enough to take perfect pics of 8.5x11 docs. Once in your iphone, it is super quick to email, sync with iphoto, whatever. I guess there are a few steps to proper OCR, but I never really seem to need it. Invented/sold by some dude named Kyle Koch. He sells a few variations in a few different materials. He also offers plans for free that you can print up and cut out templates yourself. Recommended by Tyson on Jul 21, 2009 Just bought this pepper mill because of @Kristine's recommendation. Love it! Works great, has a heavy classy feel to it. Gets a nice patina with use too. Sounds weird, but I specifically look forward to applying pepper at each meal because of it! Electronic Ruler by design reaktor berlin - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on Jul 10, 2009 Measures drawn line lengths relatively- from where you start to where you finish. The wood finish and old-school digital display make this a super cool little object. Might even encourage me to start wireframing by hand :-p Just a concept product, but I hope it makes it to production. Recommended by Tyson on Jul 7, 2009 I've got problems with my truck keys- I loose them all the time in the city, and I never know what to do with them when I'm surfing and stuff like that. The hitchsafe is an awesome solution. Fits in my trailer hitch and holds a key and a couple credit cards. I've got no idea if it will hold up to a beating by a thief, but its not that noticeable and hasn't happened yet. Slash: The Slash autobiography - http://www.thisnext.com/item...
Recommended by Tyson on May 21, 2009 A great set of stories, each one beter than the last. It is hard to beleive it's all true. A super entertaining read and a great insight into a time and a place that I personally find fascinating. I think Anthony Bozza did a great job ghost writing this- it really feels honest, from the hip, and mostly as if it was all Slash's own words.
