Our data center (SVColo) performed an upgrade to their core network switch this evening. Something went wrong, and the operation took 30 minutes instead of 5. We apologize for the problem.
Jason: we would love to host FriendFeed but any hoster will screw up from time to time so I would rather win their business on the strength of our technology and service. Our CEO puts his personal cell phone out there (I don't know of any other hosting company CEO that does that, plus mine is +1-425-205-1921). not to mention I have some major motivation to make sure FriendFeed stays up. :-)

@scoble, that's just it. I've only known Rackspace to screw up once and it was due to some guy driving a car into the data center. Plus, all the other perks you mentioned.

Good morning everyone. I gave up caffeine and diet soda for my new year's resolution COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE DAMN IT ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS COFFEE and it's going fine so far WHY DOES MY HEAD HURT SO MUCH I WANT TO DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE how are you?
Victor, I haven't had my coffee today so that abstract made no sense to me. "Caffeine is a competitive antagonist at adenosine receptors. Receptor up-regulation during chronic drug treatment has been proposed to be the mechanism of tolerance to the behavioral stimulant effects of caffeine. This study reassessed the role of adenosine receptors in caffeine tolerance. Separate groups of...

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...): "Adenosine is a nucleoside composed of a molecule of adenine attached to a ribose sugar molecule (ribofuranose) moiety via a β-N9-glycosidic bond." Well that's no help. High school chemistry was a long time ago.

I am happy I never got caught up with coffee and caffeine. I'm already at 200% and with the addition of coffee? That's scary. Good luck, Stephen. *sips herbal tea*

I gave up caffeine in November. The most surprising symptom was stiffness of my joints, especially in my jaw. I had three headaches in the month of December which is down from about 10 - 12 on average in the months before. I feel better.
- Ryan Massie
Ryan, thank you, that gives me the strength to carry on. DESPITE LOUIS GRAY AND HIS ILK.

I missed chai tea lattes horribly at first, but I've found replacements like rooibos tea that are caffeine free. Be wary of "decaf" cause it's usually reduced caffeine not free. I ate chocolate fine since it's almost not worth mentioning that it has some in it.
- Ryan Massie
Yeah, been giving myself a little chocolate methadone. Mmm, almost lunch time and can follow it up with a Twix since I was good today.

Angel, thank you, I will enjoy my Twix while listening to that cantata.

Derrick: It was insidious, my slip into caffeine addiction. I blame my kids. Enjoy the tea!

Sometimes coffee calms me down. Serious. Then again, I'm one of those left-handed people, so maybe my adenosine receptors are looking for the left-handed version of the caffeine molecule, while most people's are looking for the right-handed version... or vice-versa, or something. In looking for FF alternatives, has anyone found ones that have Friend-of-a-Friend, auto-refresh (even after a period of time, like it used to before real-time), items that pop to the top with activity, and embeddable widgets that preserve inline media and comments? Those seem to be the things lacking from everywhere I look.
Just in case. I'm sticking around until the bitter end, but I want to have someplace all set up to head to. Plus I want to keep reminding anyone who might be working on apps to fill the void what the things are that separate FF from the rest. :)
- Jandy
I've looked at Streamy - to me Streamy seems to be more of a SocialMedian type of thing (but I didn't use SocialMedian that much). More of a suggested RSS/news item reader rather than a lifestream aggregator with kickass community integration. Like, you can add your services, but they show up as separate widgets. I can see activity on my Flickr photos in Streamy, but it's not integrated with the rest of my lifestream.
- Jandy
Yeah, I was working on GReader setup earlier - you have to basically approve people to allow them to comment (follow them as well and add them to a commenting-allowed group). It's probably going to be a decent replacement for the basic browsing on FF, though.
- Jandy
We now foster for two shelters, Palo Alto Animal Services and now the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. This is our first group with HSSV and they are just adorable. We decided to take on HSSV also because, well they asked. They were desperately looking for foster parents as they have had too many kittens this year, and Palo Alto has had a light year so I talked with everyone involved and so now we work with both. I hope it won't be too much to keep everyone's different rules straight and all, but everyone is so wonderful at both places that I think it will work out fine. These 4 were just picked up in a lot in San Jose, their mother is rather feral and ran off so these guys got brought in and I got called. Woo hoo!!! This is exactly what I needed to fill the little hole in my heart that Orion left behind. Seems to be 2 boys and 2 girls, but more updates will be coming soon I'm sure. My guess is that they are about 3.5 or 4 weeks old. We will have these guys at lest 4 weeks, maybe more.

Aden, well right now they are all super timid and not so sure about me, but I keep taking short breaks from work and popping in on them and giving scritches and talking to them and they are getting interested. The all grey one looks like he will warm up first, the black and white girl (i think) is currently the most unhappy with me and the grey and white boy (i think) is an ostrich wanting to bury his head anywhere he can. It will take time, but they will warm up.

These are all from the same litter? What a variation in coloring! You are going to have so much fun! Actually, you are already having fun, aren't you?
- Anne Bouey
Anne, yup, all the same litter. You can get some wild variation of kitten markings in a litter as not all the kittens in the same litter always have the same father. Here is a photo from a litter of 5 where there were also three looks, black and white, tiger grey and bermin white (one kitten is missing in the photo) http://www.flickr.com/photos... friendfeedFilterByService - just released (greasemonkey script) - Shows only FriendFeed feed entries based on user chosen service types via either an inclusion (services to show) or exclusion (services to hide) list. http://userscripts.org/scripts...
In this initial release, selecting the services to filter is set by installing the script, then opening it to update the "Configuration" variables (near the top of the script, it's clearly marked). A future version will have a better interface than this. By default (it's meant to be changed right away by each user) the configuration is set to: filterMethod = "HIDE" and servicesToHideArr = ["Twitter", "Some other service"]. A side effect of running the script is (whether on your home feed or friendfeed.com/public or any realtime view) as new entries come into view, there is less of a smooth transition: entries more so just pop into place; the page also wiggles up and down in a more pronounced manner. Steps have been taken in the script to reduce the vertical movement, however. If you find any more caveats, let me know, and enjoy!
- Micah
What's the killer app / a usage example for this? Sorry, I am slow.
- Josh Haley
If you want to see all Twitter, all the time on the public feed (and nothing else): You've got TwitterVision. Of course others will take Twitter out and want to see everything else :)
- Micah
I'll be back on FF around 8:30pm MST to answer any questions. —See ya—
- Micah
pretty cool. Using SHOW tumblr then SHOW bookmarklet. If there aren't any entries that normally would have been on your front page, then the page is blank. crank up the ?num=100 and then you have a better chance at seeing the entries. Way to go, Micah!
- Josh Haley
I like it. But the "SHOW"option conflicts with the Cleaner FriendFeed script when you have a lot of services in there.
- Willem (@wim66) ☠
Works fine now with Cleaner FriendFeed for widescreen script.
- Willem (@wim66) ☠
So does this get applied across the entire site? I want to hide all of Twitter in http://friendfeed.com/public, for example, but not in any of my lists. There I've got it hidden natively s.t. I only see tweets with Likes/comments.
- Ken Sheppardson
OK, this is officially slick. Thanks, Micah! Feature request: I wish I could just have it strip away or hide everything other than div#feed, I'd configure it to only apply to http://friendfeed.com/public, and I'd just stick it in it's own window (or the sidebar) as a little real-time FriendFeed ticker.
- Ken Sheppardson
version 0.112 released! - Embed styles added for a compact layout when using ?embed=1 querystring. Ken, start the ticker tape parade =)

FriendFeed has been almost completely blocked in Iran as far as we can tell. We have a large number of very active Iranian users, and we noticed a steep decline in activity yesterday. Graph below.
Bret: Is this based on IP numbers located in Iran, or actual activity from those users? If it's IP based, it'd be interesting to see the activity on a user basis and see if they've been able to route around the blocking.
- Ken Sheppardson
If Twitter were blocked and FriendFeed weren't, I'd expect an uptick in FriendFeed activity, not a 92% drop.
- Kevin Fox
I.e. given all the users who've previously accessed the site from an Iran IP number, how many have been active from different numbers in the past 2 days.
- Ken Sheppardson
Instead of "liking" this, shouldn't we have an "unlike" button?
- Steven Melfi
:( Bret: According to Stephen fry, these are the iran proxies: 218.128.112.18:8080 218.206.94.132:808 218.253.65.99:808 219.50.16.70:8080 . Can you track these IPs?

If Iran thinks they have nothing to fear, then why block Friendfeed?
- Frode Stenstrøm
Frode: because the government is like China: they believe that by retarding the flow of information they will reduce the threat of protests and governmental overthrow.

I don't speak Persian, so I don't know all the searches, but there are still (luckily) a lot of Persian users posting: http://friendfeed.com/search.... If you are Persian and looking for updates, try our search engine to find the few users who still have access.
- Bret Taylor
Frode: and in Iran's case, they are run by conservative religious authorities and they don't like the fact that they are not in control of information flow like they used to be. They like to think they can still control information sources and, since they can't, they try to block places where their citizens can go to share information.
- Robert Scoble
is it a joke? iranian users seems the %90 of friend feed. it could not be real!
- Fırat Demirel
Firat: There are no units on the vertical axis of the chart.
- Ken Sheppardson
Firat: This is a chart of traffic from Iran, not of FF's total traffic.
- Kevin Fox
Firat, i doubt that this graph is a percentage graph... probably more likely that it's measuring hits, sessions, or total data transfered (mb, kb, etc)
- Chris Heath
Kevin: what impact did this have on FF's overall traffic?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Iran is the #6 country for FriendFeed in terms of page views per day.
- Bret Taylor

Iran restored cell phone service Sunday that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians still could not send text messages from their mobile phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent attempt to undercut opposition voices. Stanislas: not to mention they encourage their smartest and richest people to leave (the ones who have technical skills). There's a reason why Silicon Valley has 10,000 or more Iranians living here. Their government sucks and the people are getting tired of it. Of course if their government was great I would never have met my wife (who grew up in Tehran). So, there is good to come out of a crappy government! :-)

it has always seemed to me that the iranian user base is ENORMOUS here. wow. unbelievable.

It is interesting how much civil unrest that is brewing across the globe towards their governments. The knee jerk reactions in attempting to block certain websites shows how much they didn't expect the net to become such a widespread conduit for cutting through the bs and informing those that wish to know. I wish those who take a stand all the best.
- alphaxion
Another way for those that are in Iran is to access through Netvibes (but I don't know if it works or if it's blocked too), adding Friendfeed, Gmail and so on such as modules

Yes, Friendfeed is blocked in Iran. Right now the papers and TV channels here are controlled by the government and our access to satellite channels is blocked too. anyone remember 2400? Or even 900 for that matter ~ modems from a bygone generation yet I still have a bunch of them I have pulled from old computers, what use could they have now? :)

Ubuntu, Ham Radio Packet radio still runs at slow speeds like that. Also, many Healthcare records, especially Medicare/Medicaid are transferred via modem still.
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention the fax :) And Ham Radio though is the one thing that can stay alive come power outage pretty amazing stuff.

And running at a blazing 33.6 was the shiat :) haha Most of the old communities faded away since then or merged online or simply disappeared.

Yeah, Scott....but it's just not the same :) When it was THE place I went to a) find out about freeware to download and b) find out where to download it. At least for me. :)

It's not as fun to eat them unless you're surrounded by them!
- Tamara
It only gets better from here:) Are they walking yet?
- Michael Fidler
Drew, Ken and Tamara, you have good taste. Michael, they both stand. Matthew took 4 steps in a row today, but it still makes him nervous. Sarah has taken one or two in a row. We don't believe it counts until there is video, and you'll get it here first.
- Louis Gray
tap...tap...tap...we're waiting for that video!
- Anne Bouey
They're steps in the right direction. I'm looking forward to the video.
- Michael Fidler
I'm with Sarah. I like to do this kind of thing myself. Like squeezing all the toothpaste out of a giant sized tube or getting a new box of Kleenix and pulling them all out one by one. Maybe I should go buy some Cheez-Its. Naw, it'd have to be Cheese Nips. Cheez-Its are too good to waste.

Yup. That sounds about right. The old tried and true floor food consuming method. Both our kids mastered it. Luckily, they have moved on passed sofa food and straight on to carry it wherever I go food.

Not a good attitude for a scientist to have :)
- Mo Kargas
if it is not good for a scientist to have that view then if all theories were just taken as fact and not tested, modified and updated then it would always result the same, seems to me that is the view of an Open Minded Scientist who keeps seeking something different, to make something happen otherwise thought not possible.
- Ubuntu101

Who said anything about accepting theory as fact? You don't change the facts, you change the theory
- Mo Kargas
Indeed the point was to simply keep an open mind to not take a theory at face value, not so much as to consider a theory as facts.

Maybe a little too twittery but I like it! An easy way to quickly share searches. I would like to see it somehow encompass multiple word searches though.
- Brandon Titus
See! Paul is _SO GOOD_ he just says... "I'll do it later today". Well done, sir.
- Louis Gray
so can we get a combo on the search. .search only "comments" {y/n}; "tag" (y/n") ; "title" {y/n} ? In that manner we can SearchRT in various methods of text in and byitself.. !
- Peter Dawson
Somewhat confusing - some # tags go to FF some go to Twitter.
- Brian Sullivan
@Brian: tags that go to Twitter are posted from Twitter
- LouCypher
so will imported tweets containing hashtags link to twitter search or friendfeed search? in the past I think they linked to twitter
- chrisofspades
LouCypher - yes and I block Twitter (but it does still show up in real time searches/filters) -- that combined with the fact that it is not easy at a glance to identify the source of the posts makes it confusing.
- Brian Sullivan
O.K. I'm impressed. So much for the theory that you guys are releasing things slowly. I think you completely destroyed that today. Nice work!
- Michael Fidler
Shouldn't we be able to tag posts directly - without using a comment to do so? Comment - Like - Share - Hide - Tags? "Tags" should show you existing comment tags - and allow the adding of new ones.
- Tim Tyler
I'm with Tim. Genuine tagging would be a Good Thing.
- Chris Lasher
I'd love 'real' tags, but do I see the utility of leveraging hashtags, especially w/ all the tweets that come into FF. If they linkified twitter hashtags, and then also built their own tags system, it'd a) be more work for little more reward, and b) be confusing for some users, as there would effectively be two tag systems in FF. Lesser evil, and all that. *grin*
- Ken Kennedy
Brilliant! What happens to tags in tweets? Weren't they linked to Twitter searches?
- Kol Tregaskes
Yeah, given that hashtags in tweets link to Twitter Search, hashtags in other types of content should link to FriendFeed search, but WITHOUT the hash sign in the search term. But I agree that "real" FF tags would be even better. Maybe when you type a hashtag, it could get automatically converted into a real tag?
- Grey Drane
Really great improvement guys! It would be i nice feature to see the most popular tags. #improvement
- Jan Friman
Congrats on this awesome new feature Paul but what about #hashtags with hyphens? For example: #real-time only linkifies #real. :(Twitter has the same dilemma)
- Garin Kilpatrick
I think there should be an international investigation into the fact Rahsheen wasn't included until now. :) I always assumed he had been, and that oversight has been rectified.

Zoey says: This morning in kitten school I learned to pounce, started working on playing in small open areas and I actually took a chance and snuck up on Miss Indiana and swatted at her tail. She didn't seem happy, but Rachel and Kevin loved it. Maybe I'll try it again soon... #zoeyfosterkitten#foxfosterkittens
Stephen, this is with my iphone even. I think it is using the macro function on the phone. It's from this set of iphone shots I took yesterday: http://friendfeed.com/phoenix...
- Rachel Lea Fox
oh boy I see another spoiled kitty! (I have three) She's precious :)
- BEX
Ah, thanks Rachel, I missed that post from yesterday. All five pics do look good. (How many total did you take to select those 5-best?)
- Stephen Mack
BEX, little zoey is our foster kitten, spoiled kitty in training for someone else's home. She is very timid and needs lots of training as her rough life beginning has set her back a little. but she is doing great and loving lap cat life. We have two very spoiled kitties of our own and then the random slew of kittens that pass through. In my next life I want to be a spoiled house cat - really really spoiled like mine are!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Stephen, It looks like I had take about 27 at the time that I shared those ones, plus a few of Indiana. A few had some motion blur that I didn't like but when I was posting I was disappointed that I couldn't share more than 5, I really wanted to share 9.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Adorable. So present in the eyes. Great shot!
- Fossil Huntress
I get so excited about zoey doing the littlest things: like instigating her own playing or getting off the couch to go to her condo with her food and litter to eat or whatever and then coming back to the couch and not hiding in her bed, or being interested in what the big kitties are doing rather than just cowering. She is really a very different kitten than she was when she got here. She still has a long way to go, but she is making progress!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Anyone in the bay area, Zoey will be up for adoption, next week most likely (she is our foster kitten). She is looking for a home with no kids (at least for a year or so) and no dogs. Other cats will take adjustment but will be fine.
- Rachel Lea Fox
I've thought it would be great to be foster mom to cats or dogs, but I would seriously not be able to resist keeping every single one.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Jannifer, the only way to resist is know that if you keep them all, that you can't keep fostering. And then how do you get all the adorable kitteny goodness?
- Rachel Lea Fox
Aaaawww how true! You must be very strong! I would cry and cry and cry if I had to give one up!
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Oh I cry every single time. But it's worth it. I love having them all so much, when I don't have them I'm longing for them. And I know they are off to fabulous new homes because we helped them.

While Photoshop is widely regarded as the industry standard for all kinds of image manipulation, it’s costly and overblown for the average photographers use (ok, so I let in a *little* comparison). Yes, Photoshop has a ton of useful tools, support and plugins available, but it was never available for Linux operating system users until the introduction of Wine. this is awesome, i was literally just trying to do this last night on one of our team feeds and had to post links to published google docs instead. going to try it out now. it's like they read my mind.

Kol...we use Drop.io all the time here at my office. This would be great as it is supremely simpler. But approved file types and sizes needs to be understood.

I'm not sure that I'm going to use that feature (I rarely share docs over the internet that weren't created in Zoho or GDocs, anyway), but still it looks pretty neato.
- Miss Elle
Bret, do you have any restrictions to protect against music filesharers etc so you do not become an RIAA target?
- travispuk
@ Travis: I was just wondering the same.
- Brian Chang
Bret Taylor, a friend of mine uploaded 1 mp3 and it disappeared. Now he can't upload any mp3 file, seeing a [The "" file type is not supported]. Broken message?
- Jason Nunnelley
I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF

- Fleagle

Fleagle: It is possible that someone would do that but FriendFeed is fairly well self monitored. It is still a small group of people in comparison to other networks.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Glad for this feature, though perhaps close partnership with Box.net or similar could keep FF storage costs better contained? Not criticizing, just hoping Core Team doesn't get distracted by extending (and babysitting) commodity services. Keep up the great work!

Huh. That's really interesting. It's one of those things you never think about because "it's just the way it's done", but when you think about it his points are entirely valid: password masking hurts usability and doesn't really provide any real security benefit. So why do we do it?
- Louis Simoneau
"More importantly, there's usually nobody looking over your shoulder when you log in to a website. It's just you, sitting all alone in your office, suffering reduced usability to protect against a non-issue." — umm, 'sitting all alone in your office'?! So Mr Nielsen never collaborates with one or more colleagues huddled around a computer screen, so it must be universally true. Good to know :D
- Micah
"Look away. I. Said. Look. Away—I'm type'n my password into a user friendly input....UH! STILL TYPING!"
- Micah
Yeah, the more I think about this, the more I think it's wrongheaded. We would never want an ATM machine, for example to not mask our PIN #. In the same vein, this is fine if you have a dedicated single user personal computer that is rarely shared or used for collaboration -- but many people use computers in shared environments: schools, libraries, airports, stores. That's not a good user experience for those users. It also isn't going to serve to give people the emotional sense that their data is safe.
- Jason Toney
Andy, exactly. Though I must say, just had a flashback to the Lotus Notes client (7 odd years ago anyway) password input - variable-length hieroglyphic icon grouping would appear as you type. That was just wrong, and I'll gladly sick useit.com all over that business. :D
- Micah
It's hard enough getting users to register for something -- imagine if we removed that sense of security (whether valid or not)
- Jason Toney
I'd like it if I could stop password masking, actually. I wouldn't turn it on in my open-plan office, but at home, I think it would be fine.
- Andrew C (✓)
Jason, amen. I'm all for challenging 'well we've always done it that way's, but this boggles my mind because it's going after the henchmen when there's so many usability super-villains out there.
- Micah
Andrew, what about: type password into username field, cut, paste into password field, type in username, done?
- Micah
Some overzealous sites (it's rare) actually prohibit pasting into password fields. That said, I have pretty good muscle memory - I cover the ATM pad completely; I can't even see the buttons, much less someone else - but Nielsen's right, password masking can be silly and doesn't add any security when there's no one around to shoulder-surf.
- Andrew C (✓)
true at home it really serves no purpose, and at the very least by seeing it in plain text you are more likely to remember it. But on the one hand it can be beneficial in a multiple user session, and setting that as a default for high security locations works well. That is as long as they are not one of those who use the same password everywhere.
- Ubuntu101

One of the nice things about the iPhone: the password character remains unmasked for a moment.
