Just quit about 20 groups on flickr. That felt good. More to quit tomorrow.
That's what she said! - tabbr
cathartic, eh? - Jess Dennis
yep. for sure. - Thomas Hawk
I've been doing the same. Have you noticed how many of the bigger groups have moved their forums away from Flickr? - Chris Nixon
Chris Nixon - Can you give us some examples? & Where have they moved them? - Stephanie Keating
Your Photo Tips has moved to http://www.exposurecommunity.com/ - Chris Nixon
TWIP have moved to their own forum. - Chris Nixon
There were a few others too, but as I've quit the groups it's difficult to list. - Chris Nixon

You've quit more groups than I've ever been in. Congrats! ^_^ - Almond Butterscotch
it's good to quit them. I never participated in most of them and many were just things I'd been invited to that I joined at one point or another. - Thomas Hawk
I need to do that too.. hell I'm admin of 38 groups or so??? - Jakey
i wonder how many group therrr admins ;-} - Mo Tabesh
Good to cut a little more flickr out of my life. - Thomas Hawk
I've also quit most of the groups a while back. Waste of time really. - Ivan Makarov
TH: you're quitting groups... are you also done posting to Flickr (aside from the "blog related" posts)? Or just taking a break? It's been a while since you've uploaded your daily 40+ shots... - boscbo
No, I'm still going to post images to flickr. I'm just not going to engage in community there in forums. I hate feeling like every day could be the day that they nuke my account without warning. By dropping the forums on Flickr from my life I have less of a liklihood that they can vindictively nuke my flickrstream for something I might say over there in a forum. The flickr TOS/CG is so... more... - Thomas Hawk
Dropped a few group memberships also, as I think TH has the right idea. The "other" DMU was the first one to go... I just don't enjoy the drama at all. - Scott Coulter
Whenever a group is nuked either by admins or Flickr staff it always creates chaos. It's harmful for community and creates unnecessary drama. - Thomas Hawk
There is a greasemonkey script I think. - Thomas Hawk
I recently returned to flickr after a two year absence since the censorship of German flickr users. The site feels not the same anymore. It still is nice for photo sharing, but there can be no trust anymore, especially facing the ongoing unbelivable behaviour of flickr staff towards paying customers. I now use it merely as a secondary place for the occasional and cursory exchange. My content is safe on my own server. - Ulrich Hilger
Mathew- Check out this GM script: http://userscripts.org/scripts.... It doesn't allow you to mass quit, but it's definitely easier than going to each individual group page and quitting. I quit about 200 groups yesterday using this script. Took about 15 minutes. - Chris Martino
I need to too. I'm a member of over 600 groups. - Nick Humphries

McDonald's to Shut Business in Iceland - ABC News - http://abcnews.go.com/Busines...
"REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp will shutter its business in Iceland because it is too expensive for the franchise to operate after the country's financial crisis. The world's largest fast-food company said on Monday that all three of its restaurants in Iceland, operated by franchisee Jon Ogmundsson, would stop operating at midnight on October 31. Ogmundsson has run the McDonald's restaurants since 2004. He told Reuters that the decision to close the restaurants was mainly due to the severe depreciation of the Icelandic krona and high taxes on imported food. Instead, he will launch a new burger chain at his three locations with locally sourced food under the name Metro. "I've sold more hamburgers in the last few months than ever before, but the cost is prohibitive. It just makes no sense," he said. "For a kilo of onion, imported from Germany, I'm paying the equivalent of a bottle of good whiskey." he said." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
I thought it was because the burgers were always cold. Get it? j/k - Jorge Escobar
And the headline reads "Onions from Germany cause McDonald's to close Iceland business"? Shocking. The next political crisis is on its way. - Ulrich Hilger

Ok, I tried all different permutations of possible settings on both sides of FriendFeed and Facebook and was not able to let posts from FriendFeed show up on my Wall at Facebook. The only way that finally worked was to attach Facebook to FriendFeeds RSS. I still wonder what the problem is...
hehe, Im not sure of my links between them either... or how it works or when or why ;o) - Jesper Voetmann Mikkelsen
It seems that it does work now like I wanted. The trick was to subscribe Facebook to the RSS-Feed of FriendFeed. - Ulrich Hilger

The message "Contract of Settlements" from LSM Company contained a virus or a suspicious attachment. It was therefore not fetched from your account and has been left on the server. If you wish to write to LSM, just hit reply and send LSM a message. Thanks, The Gmail Team
does anyone know how to disable these type of notifications from gmail? - Thomas Hawk
I don't know how to disable it but it is good to receive these messages, because gmail lets you know that their automatic pick up did not pick up everything. 'Contaminated' mails will pile up in the original mailbox if you do not delete them. - Ulrich Hilger
I just get these about 10 of these messages every day from gmail and I just always have to delete them. It's tedious. Since 99.9% of these are spam, I'd just as soon Google not notify me of them as they arrive. Maybe notify me of all of them once a week if they don't want to give me that level of control over my inbox. - Thomas Hawk
I have not tried this myself yet as I do not receive that much of them but if I would maybe to create a filter will do? - Ulrich Hilger

I'm going to drop my blog from my FriendFeed account. I don't like how FF posts my blog posts automatically without images. I'm going to drop my blog feed from my FF account and just manually share items on FF directly from my blog. This way I can include images that go with stories. I think.
My posts often have a lot of images. I've felt sheepish about direct posting them to FriendFeed with the images, but perhaps I should try direct posting too. - Hutch Carpenter
lately I've been sharing the blog posts with images on FF and then just manually deleting from FF my blog post when it shows up without the image. But it's a pain to do that and since almost every entry on my blog includes an image I think that this represents a better way to post my blog content to my FF account. - Thomas Hawk
Good idea. Can't FriendFeed automatically include images? - Benedikt Koehler
FF should just turn itself into a blogging platform and be done with it - Brian Sullivan
Thomas, what do you use to publish your posts? - Roberto Bonini
Benedikt, they don't at present. I think it would be a good feature to have, but probably not easy as oftentimes blog posts use multiple images and FF wouldn't know which one automatically to scrape. That's why doing it manually this way might be the better way to go -- at least for me. - Thomas Hawk
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I never even check to see how it looks, Oy, sometimes I wonder how I make it through the day! - Karen Swim
@Thomas: True, it's not that easy. But I don't want to drop my blog from my FF account because it kind of defines my identity here. There are no profiles, so you just have the list of your (potential) friends' feeds. - Benedikt Koehler
Just checked the API. It supports uploading images. I have a Windows Live Writer Plugin I'm thinking of including auto image upload in. - Roberto Bonini
hmm. good point Benedikt, maybe I'll leave my blog and then just keep quickly deleting my blog posts as they post to FF manually instead. Might be more work to do it this way though. Will have to see how it goes. I just think that blog posts are enhanced immeasurably on FF when they have images and a snippet of text from the post to give the reader an idea what the blog post is about beyond a simple blog headline. - Thomas Hawk
one thing maybe FF could do would be to somehow autodetect any embedded flickr/zooomr/smugmug/picassa, etc. code in a blog post and use the first image to accompany a blog headline. Might also be nice to see the first few sentences of a blog post's text along with the headline as well. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas: Absolutely! First thing FF could implement would be the ability to switch auto-feeding of your blogs to FF off and on. So you would not have to delete your blog from your "not-quite-profile". - Benedikt Koehler
I've been thinking the same Thomas. I was thinking of re-sharing via the bookmarklet, but that just causes echo. Your solution just makes more work and takes the point away. Perhaps FF should scrape the first picture within the body of the post at the very least? - Justin Korn
I'm falling behind on the conversation apparently. One step further to what has been suggested would be to allow your blog post to post private first, allow you to add pictures, comments etc, before it goes "live" on FF... - Justin Korn
I agree that this is a deficiency of FF. Not sure how they would implement it automatically though. - Jeff P. Henderson
++ Thomas' last recommendation, this would be great. - jcunwired
Thomas: Just realized one lost if you do that is you lose the use of the FriendFeed plugin on your blog. - Justin Korn
hmmm.. I never thought of that. Thanks for mentioning that Justin. That's a pretty good reason not to delete my blog posts... grrrr.. I wish that there was just a way that I could get my photos from my posts apended to my blog entries. Even a "share image with this post" button on FF afterwards to add a graphic could be helpful. - Thomas Hawk
Wish there was a good way to make things work for you! I need to rethink a lot of the services I import, too. - Andy DeSoto
Thomas: Agreed, that would be nice. I actually sent an note to Glenn Slaven (author of the WordPress plugin) to see if there is a way around this. We'll see if anything comes of it. - Justin Korn
Thomas, perhaps keep double posting (Blog & bookmarklet), but don't bother to delete the blog (e.g. Louis Gray leaves a twitter, blog post, and Google Reader on FF for all his articles). Searches by service (blog) won't find your articles. Usually bookmarklet will beat the blog post by a wide margin, so it gives comments time to accumulate on the bookmarklet post. - Mitchell Tsai
second mitchell. people will want to see your link from your profile, search through it - and most people will ignore the double postign or can act to it. - Nicole Simon
I think posts with a picture garner more attention on Friendfeed, so that seems wise. - Meryn Stol
though about a autodetect for flickr, zooomr, etc. option, would be a massive feature - Dobromir Hadzhiev
There should be a FriendFeed plugin for WordPress - haven't looked for it - that does exactly this. Analyze your post, then offer the title, excerpt and an image. Just remembered: that wouldn't help Thomas, since he's on blogger.com. Hmm. Maybe some kind of Greasemonkey script? - Holger Eilhard
I think FF should add support for better addition of blog post together with photos. - Daniel Schildt
+1 for FF plugin for WP - Ernie Oporto
It would be great to get WP plugin for FriendFeed but problem remains for people who use hosted service at WordPress.com or somewhere elso who can't add plugin to blog software. - Daniel Schildt
I was thinking about same step - de-registering. BTW, some blog platforms might have event-driven API and, as consequence, on event of posting you might get called also FF's code (bookamarklet?) - A.T.
@Thomas, I have created a new WordPress Plugin to automatically post link to your blog posts with images to FriendFeed every time you publish a blog post in WordPress. Plugin can be found at http://sudarmuthu.com/blog.... FriendFeed Discussion at http://friendfeed.com/e... - Sudar
I am also working on a script for non-WordPress platforms like blogger. Please let me know if you have any feedback - Sudar
The non-WordPress version is available now at http://sudarmuthu.com/project... Let me know if you have any feedback. - Sudar
I only use my own photo blog to post photographs (why post anywhere else in addition?). They are picked up from the photo blog feed by FF just fine. - Ulrich Hilger
@Ulrich, what software are you using to host your photoblog? - Sudar
@Sudar: I developed it myself using Java and Java Server Pages. I run it on my own Linux server using Tomcat and MySQL. - Ulrich Hilger
Just looked at the entire discussion here (not just the post from Thomas). I guess to pick up photo posts in blogs requires a change in how a particular blog publishes RSS feeds from new content for FF to recognize posted photos correctly. Just a guess, the creators of FF might be able to describe it better... - Ulrich Hilger
Another problem with deleting your blog from FF: If you would be using a plugin like WP-Friendfeed-Comments (I guess, there will be more soon) that integrates the Friendfeed discussion into your blog, it cannot find the discussion. - Benedikt Koehler

Tonight's haul from the delivery guy. D700, SB-900, new Macbook Pro. Was it a good night? Actually, it kind of sucked. But all those things are really cool.

The 10 Best Things About the New Adobe Lightroom 2.0 - http://thomashawk.com/2008...
Not sure if I want to upgrade right away or not. Love the selective processing feature, that's probably worth it alone. How is the healing brush and cropping different from the previous version? Seems to be the same to me. - Andre Maltais
Thomas Hawk was RAVING about Lightroom 2.0 to me. Can't wait to see what he does with it. - Robert Scoble
Is there a noticable speed improvement? One of the drawbacks of Lightroom 1 was the app was much slower than RawShooter. - Jauder Ho from twhirl
okay, time to take another look at Lightroom. - Chuq Von Rospach
Thanks Thomas! - jcunwired
Thomas, great writeup. Looking forward to hearing your comments once you've been using LR for a little while. Glad to hear you converted finally! I've been using LR for about 2 years and can't imagine going back to the old way. You will find many more great features as you continue to use it. One of my favorites is the ability to sync settings selectively between two or more photos. Streamlines editing if you have a bunch of shots all done in the same light or with similar exposure. - Jeff P. Henderson
I've been using Lightroom exclusively for my RAW processing for a year now and am excited to move up to the upgrade. Mainly for localized settings. The healing brush has been in earlier releases, FYI. - Jeremy Hall
I'm so glad they're putting in features I've been waiting for since I started using LR. - donato from twhirl
I use Lightroom since v1.0 right from the start and today switched from 1.4 to 2.0 after using 2.0 Beta already and desperately waiting for the release. Just love it. It is a dream. I just hope that the departure of Mark Hamburg from Adobe does not do any harm to further development of the product. - Ulrich Hilger
My old processing workflow involved using Adobe's Camera RAW in Bridge to do 95% of my work and then a remaining 5% or so in Photoshop to do spot healing, sharpening, burning and dodging etc. Now I can do all of this within Lightroom without every having to go to Photoshop. The keywording enhancements and *especially* the spot RAW processing will significantly improve my workflow. - Thomas Hawk
Jauder, I did not notice any appreciable speed improvements with this version of Lightroom. That said, this is the first version to support 64 bit processing and I think that if you have a 64 bit system that this should represent a big jump in performance. - Thomas Hawk
Great writeup. I've still been using the included Canon software for RAW image processing that came with my DSLR, but was considering a new tool. Looks like plenty of good reasons to look at Lightroom! - Kevin C. Tofel
I'm particularly interested in custom color profiles, which has been a problem that I have not been able to resolve. Shades of red, pink and lavender have never been accurate. - jcunwired
Jody, I haven't tried out the custom color profile for the Canon 5D yet, but I did like the colors that I got better natively from Adobe on this upgrade. - Thomas Hawk
I'm an Aperture user at the moment, but I'm really looking forward to the inevitable Aperture 2 v. Lightroom 2 comparisons. If only because I'm always looking for an excuse to play with new toys. - James (@willia4)
Non-destructive local adjustments and gradient filters are REALLY cool. NAPP video learning centre here http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightro... - Andrew Smith
It kind of irks me this product is not included in Photoshop CS3 Extended or any of their Creative Suites. Not even Master Collection. - Andrew Smith
Thomas, Going from a 32 to a 64 bit application will have little or no impact on the speed of the application. It only allows the application to address more memory. Going to an application that can use multiple processors would show a significant speed improvement. I do not believe Lightroom was written to support multi processors. - Jeff P. Henderson
Lightroom is very tempting, but I'm not sure I can justify the premium over ACR (which comes as part of the $89 Photoshop Elements) - Andy Roth
good point Jeff. I haven't done any work with 64 bit processors yet but I know that sometimes when my photo processing gets bogged down it's because I've got too many apps open at once. I'd assume with more memory you'd get less of this sort of behavior. Potentially. - Thomas Hawk
I used to use PhotoShop all the time. When LR2.0 Beta came out I decided to give it a try and have never looked back. It is by far the best processing tool I have used for images. It has improved my workflow tenfold. The presets are great, the healing and cloning brushes work well and the vignette control is fantastic. I find the speed to be pretty good. I can't wait to purchase this. I am happy to pay the price for this software. - Tom Quinn
Jeff is incorrect. 64-bit CPU processing can have an impact on performance. And it has nothing to do with multiple processors. Lots of variables, but it can impact performance -- though he's correct in that it may not matter in the case of Lightroom. - Peter Kirn from twhirl
Let me just add one comment - Adobe Online store sucks big time. I live in Bermuda, which does not have an Adobe Online store, so I tried purchasing from Adobe US Store. No dice unless I have a US Billing address. Get this - I have to call a *toll number* and try to purchase that way. I can order stuff from Amazon with a Bermuda billing address without issues. Adobe needs to wake up to global e-commerce... - Tom Quinn
@Peter you are correct that a 64 bit OS can have a positive impact on performance compared to a 32 bit version, but in real life application, the performance improvement is fairly small. Here are two articles, one PC and one Mac oriented that discuss the variables and show some test data. http://www.smartcomputing.com/editori... http://www.geekpatrol.ca/2006... - Jeff P. Henderson
Oh, so I call the number and it is no longer in service. So I call customer service and they cannot take my order, and can't tell me how to get it from Adobe (due to shipping contracts, even though I only want the download). Eventually they tell me to order from CDW, which is a joke because it does not sell LR2 yet. - Tom Quinn
Would this app be good for a photo noob like me or should I stick with gimp or something like photo elements? - Dylan McIntosh from fftogo
I wish work and sleep would stop getting in my way so I can play with LR2. :( - Squid
Two words: adjustment brush. *genuflects* - cecily
OK, this goes on the shopping list. Wow. - Chris Baskind
Dylan, Adobe let's you download any of their fully functional applications to try out for 30 days free. Why not try it out to see if you like it. If you do, all you do is pay on their web site for a software key and keep using it. If not you can uninstall it after the 30 days are up. Depends on your work flow, but it seems like if you are using Gimp or Photoshop now, Lightroom might just work for you also. - Jeff P. Henderson
Squid, I hear you! I'm trying to catch up on all of the LR2 articles and watch the Kelby videos to learn how to best use the new features. I uninstalled my beta copy of 2.0 but haven't had time to install the 2.0 upgrade that I bought last night. Still have 1.4.1 installed. - Jeff P. Henderson
Good writeup, Thomas. Some of the features you mention have been in Lightroom since the beginning (Healing Brush and Crop/Rotate tool) but if you're coming from Camera Raw they're new. - Ole Begemann
One bad thing about Lightroom: US price = $ 299.00 (€192.048), EU price = € 298.80??!... I know this ain't an exclusive of Adobe but someone's earning a few bucks with this "bogus exchange rate", because its not like my copy is shipped directly from the US... - João Almeida

Lately I've been wondering more and more about the role that time ought to play in photographs. Photographer Stephen Shore is amongst the best I've seen at capturing so much of an era through his work -- I don't think anyone got the 70s as well as he did. Certain objects seem to age especially quickly -- fashion, architecture, furniture, cars. It makes me want to try and figure out what I ought to be shooting now that will age as well as stuff that Shore shot 30 years ago. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
All the technologies age bad, but clothes also. Atmospheres are perhaps the key to capture the age (people walking texting with mobiles, snapping photos at concerts with the same mobiles). - Mário Pires
Good point. What is the spirit of our times that will specifically identify a photograph from being from a certain era? I don't know but I am fascinated by such photographs myself and appreciate their '50s', '60s' or '70s' feel for whatever reason. - Ulrich Hilger
It takes a keen eye to accomplish this. I think that in many ways its similar to the way major investment players are able to predict the markets (ie: futures) and leverage them. I tried to capture my surroundings for a period. This got old fast, I lost interest and never continued. I find myself thinking about this quite often; wanting to capture a moment in time that is significant to a period or an era is one of my goals in photography. - Carlos Ayala
Those soon to become quaint giant flat screens on the walls. Starbucks and travel mugs. And of course Bluetooth headsets that are not yet implanted. Hummers. SUVs and trucks dominating the road. . - Alexei Tolkachev
I always loved Shore's work, along with William Eggleston - Jason Carreira
