New HIPAA rule seen as tougher | Healthcare IT News - http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news...
And so the HIPAA Privacy and Security final rule released Jan. 17 to a large extent tracking what was in the proposed rule, but also bringing some significant changes that will impact the industry, according to Bob Belfort, partner in the healthcare practice at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, which works with states and providers on health IT and related public policy issues, frequently helps clients craft breach notifications. - Nate DiNiro

EHR users unhappy, many switching | Healthcare IT News - http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news...
With more electronic health record systems continuing to fall short of providers' expectations, a new report by Black Book Rankings suggests that 2013 may indeed be the "year of the great EHR vendor switch." After polling some 17,000 active EHR adopters, report officials found that as many as 17 percent of medical practices could be switching out their first choice EHR by the end of the year. “The high performance vendors emerging as viable past 2015 are those dedicating responsive teams to address customers’ current demands,” said Black Book’s managing partner Doug Brown, in a news release. - Nate DiNiro

Why EHRs Really Haven’t Made Us Healthier: A Response To Glen Tullman | Brian Klepper, PhD - http://brianklepper.info/2013...
Tullman’s forecasts are hardly news, and there are two problems with his portrayals. The first is the dissonance between what he says now and actually did. Tullman became a multi-millionaire crafting products and policy that delivered intentionally costly, unfriendly and incompatible systems. Under his leadership, Allscripts products never embraced a national standard for health information exchange, even though those standards were available, or developed the capacity to seamlessly trade information with other systems. - Nate DiNiro

If you eat bread, you rely on an Agricultural Combine. If you live in a wood house, you rely on a Sawmill. Each of these machines relies on other machines in order for it to exist. If you distill this complex web of interdependent machines into a reproduceable, simple, closed-loop system, you get these: - Nate DiNiro

Hacking the President’s DNA - Andrew Hessel, Marc Goodman, and Steven Kotler - The Atlantic - http://www.theatlantic.com/magazin...
The U.S. government is surreptitiously collecting the DNA of world leaders, and is reportedly protecting that of Barack Obama. Decoded, these genetic blueprints could provide compromising information. In the not-too-distant future, they may provide something more as well—the basis for the creation of personalized bioweapons that could take down a president and leave no trace. - Nate DiNiro

Where Have All the Primary Care Doctors Gone? - NYTimes.com - http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012...
"More and more, my family and friends are asking for my help in finding a primary care doctor. That they would be having trouble finding one doesn’t surprise me. We’ve all been reading warnings about an impending doctor shortage for several years now. What is alarming to me is that there are no sure-fire solutions in place that will bail us all out in time. Doctor and Patient Doctor and Patient Dr. Pauline Chen on medical care. In the United States, we are now short approximately 9,000 primary care doctors. These are the general internists, family doctors, geriatricians and general pediatricians, the doctors responsible for diagnosing new illnesses, managing chronic ones, advocating preventive care and protecting wellness. And health care leaders predict that that deficit will worsen dramatically in the next 15 years. Specialties like general surgery, neurosurgery and emergency medicine will also become critically understaffed; but primary care will be hardest hit, with a shortfall of... - Nate DiNiro

The Bipartisan Plan To Eradicate Family Medicine - Forbes - http://www.forbes.com/sites...
One positive facet of Obamacare is the rebuilding of our primary care system. Unfortunately, congressional forces are aligning that will obstruct replacing this back bone of our health care. Even more surprising, the proposed congressional actions are bipartisan in nature and bipartisan work tends to pass into law. How is this happening? - Nate DiNiro

Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) - http://www.hhs.gov/recover...
Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) adjustment payments provide additional help to those hospitals that serve a significantly disproportionate number of low-income patients; eligible hospitals are referred to as DSH hospitals. States receive an annual DSH allotment to cover the costs of DSH hospitals that provide care to low-income patients that are not paid by other payers, such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or other health insurance. This annual allotment is calculated by law and includes requirements to ensure that the DSH payments to individual DSH hospitals are not higher than these actual uncompensated costs. - Nate DiNiro

“Your criticisms are completely wrong”: Stallman on software patents, 20 years in | Ars Technica - http://arstechnica.com/tech-po...
The fundamental problem is this: every software patent, Stallman explained, is a monopoly on a "computational idea." In fact, that's how he has started describing software patents—as "computational idea" patents. Patents "protect" a lot more than one specific program, even though most people don't realize that. "These patents put all software developers in danger, and users as well—a danger there's no reason we should stand for," Stallman argued. - Nate DiNiro

Accountable Care Organizations Struggle With Health IT Infrastructure - http://www.informationweek.com/healthc...
Accountable Care Organizations Struggle With Health IT Infrastructure Lack of integrated systems, fragmentation of third-party applications for population health management hamper many accountable care organizations. By Ken Terry InformationWeek November 19, 2012 02:15 PM Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are taking a variety of approaches to building health IT infrastructures, according to a forthcoming report from Leavitt Partners, a research firm in Salt Lake City, and KLAS Research, which is based in Orem, Utah. But it's clear that healthcare organizations with integrated clinical and financial systems have an early lead in the race to assemble these new healthcare reform models. - Nate DiNiro

Paul Ryan's Plan For Medicare: Essential Reading - Kaiser Health News - http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories...
By choosing Wis. Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has put Medicare on the table as a major 2012 campaign issue. Ryan has had a long-standing interest in restructuring the health insurance program for the elderly and disabled. In 2010, Republicans won a majority in the House of Representatives and chose Ryan to lead the Budget Commitee -- a platform he has used to advance ideas that have won widespread support from Republicans and equally widespread denunciations from Democrats. - Nate DiNiro
