I'm still not clear on what's good about this...

please ask Dennis when Foursquare will roll out in europe
- HansVanRock
Cliff: there are three things that I get out of Foursquare: 1. I see what my friends are doing. That lets me meet them in real life and keep track of what they are doing. 2. It's a game, so I can play it to compete with my friends. 3. I can get tips from my friends for the location that I currently am at.
- Robert Scoble
Hans: it just launched in London last week.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, the tips seem good. Do you need to check in to get them?
- Cliff Gerrish
Checking-in is like closing the "sales" loop for venues. FourSquare is a disruptor in mobile marketing and users are happy and engaged....
- Antonella Stellacci
Cliff: yes. Because checking in is how you tell the system where you are.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: London i don´t consider as europe, it´s an island lost at sea ;-)
- HansVanRock
Mobile advertising is a multi-billion dollars business. ....even Twitter with geo-location API and Facebook mobile will want a share of it..
- Antonella Stellacci
Loop and latency are also key elements.
- Cliff Gerrish
Hey, Gillmor, nice camera angle of your studio!

widgets will soon start talking to each other and exchanging data. that's when user constructed solutions start getting interesting.
- scott anderson
Are there enough economics in a distributed widget mesh?
- Cliff Gerrish
widgets will be front end for services. that's where the economics come from.
- scott anderson
If you wrap up 5 widgets in a package - high risk, great leverage, low economics
- Cliff Gerrish
If you are dependent on more systems, doesn't that increase your risk? It seems like it's a downside unless you have failover to other services
- Martin May
Do we really want our phones making decisions for us? No matter how much context they have...

Have any houses been broken into based on negative location information?
- Cliff Gerrish
Cliff: I heard of one, because of a Facebook post (or it was just a bad coincidence). But I've also heard of thieves getting caught because of Google Latitude.
- Robert Scoble
As long as thieves are also on foursquare and check in as they are robbing your place -- I guess that's ok...
- Cliff Gerrish
No 4square in Reno yet. So there must be a population threshold for cities covered at this point?
- ursi
Cliff: if someone tries breaking into my house while I'm not here they might be a little shocked. :-)

Homeless people will "check in" the easy mark homes for their roaming buddies...

GOP TechTard Epic Fail! Unfortunately, we will not be taking this moment to Laugh Out Loud at M.C. Steele’s gangsta’ walk through the grassrootiness of the “new GOP,” as it seems to have been disappeared, all of it, the entire site, GONE! - http://freerangetalk.com/...
Someone should really tell the ReThuglicans to step away from the computer. The GOP launched their new website today, to howls of laughter at their lame attempts at hip-hop cool. Sadly, the lameness of the style was the least of their problems. The hastily-posted site included Site Administration access and their own g-mail password, FAIL!

LOL Rob we were discussing that this morning. And I mentioned that CCCP-esque font on that video didn't help either.

I wonder how many of the Republican Heroes would be proud of their party as it is today... "What up" indeed.
- Internet's Tad
I watched their video - it was pretty well made. I like their new message too. The problem is that it doesn't represent the way the GOP really is today. When I think of the GOP I think of "You lie!" and Sarah Palin and Tommy Tancredo and distrust of science, attempts to infuse religion into education, disrespect for women's rights, homophobia, immoral unilateral war, huge spending, the Patriot Act and on and on.
- Internet's Tad
I'm all for a "New Repulican party," but until they clean house of the crazies, I think they're screwed.

And the video ends with " A word from the Chairman." Hilarious. Rush would have a week's worth of material and Glenn Beck would try to start a revolution had the Dems made a site that looks like this.

Ron, I also don't like useless appearance of hecklers.
- Mahmood Padura
OK, if that is so, where were you guys at when the Dems Boo'd and heckled Bush in 2004 and 2005 State of the Union speeches? especially in 2005 when they heckled him for mentioning that SSI is going broke and needs reform! which was 100% accurate! He wasn't calling his opponents LIARS in his speech either!
- Brian
Then the fact that it is OK for the President to call his opponents in the audience LIARS and not expect any response is the height of ARROGANCE! Especially when he is the LIAR, Dems in the House voted down requiring proof of citizenship for getting insurance, so illegals WILL be able to get coverage if he signs the current version of the bill into law and that was confirmed by the DEM run and independent Congressional Research Service.
- Brian
@Brian: you've missed the point. Wilson's behavior was boorish and uncalled for. that's the point. Wilson was not the only person in the room of the opinion that Obama was less than truthful. his actions were foolish and uncalled for. that's the point. this is _not_ about who lied, it's about who acted out inappropriately.
- MikeAmundsen
@Brian: sorry, but I find it really depressing the lack of perspective people like you bring to these conversations. The “other people did this too" logic is infantile, not to mention disingenuous and irrelevant (as Mike just said above me.) Even if it *were* relevant, what Wilson did is unprecedented.
- Anthony Citrano
@Anthony - I guess you can't figure out that my point is the left and most of their allies in the media didn't express much concern with, what was at that time, an unprecedented event where Dems heckled and boo'd Bush during his State of Union address and doing so when he mentioned SSI's troubles.
- Brian
from BuddyFeed
@Anthony - I guess I find it laughable to listen to Dem Congressman, some of which boo'd & heckled Bush, declare outrage at Wilson's outburst. Tell me what exactly is the difference between the Dems disrupting Bush's speech & Wilson disrupting Obama's?
- Brian
from BuddyFeed
@Anthony - You are flat out wrong when you say Wilson's outburst was unprecedented! Dems beat him to the punch in 04 & 05 SOTUS speeches! I would argue that prolonged booing while President is speaking is at the very least as disrespectful & certainly more disruptive & distracting than a short "you lie" statement.

@Chris - I'm sorry but pointing out the fact that SSI & Medicare are going broke and need reform is call for booing? so what you are really saying is that when the President says something YOU don't like it's ok to voice your displeasure!
- Brian
from BuddyFeed
@Chris - Decorum HAD always been that you do not Boo the President during the SOTU address! Dems broke that decorum and now are outraged when a GOP Congressman brakes decorum?
- Brian
from BuddyFeed
@Chris - Was President Bush calling his opponents LIARS in his speech? No, Bush has more class than that! Was Bush refering to citizen protests as spectacles? Was Bush attacking his opposition party in any of his speeches? the point here is that Obama gave a partisan and very political speech where instead of strictly pushing his agenda he decided to attack his critics & refer to them as LIARS, game players, etc... Funny that you wouldn't expect some kind of reaction from those of whom Obama was targeting!
- Brian
from BuddyFeed
Let's be clear on the issue of the bill that Wilson says illegals can be on the public option. He is 100% correct in that assertion and Obama is technically incorrect when he said that his plan (he doesn't have a plan so we have to assume he supports the house bill at the time of his speech) does not cover illegals, it does, they can get on the public option and would have to pay to be...

- Chris Heath
@Chris Heath - I read your Politifact article and it too acknowledges that Illegals can get health care from the public option, I guess you do not understand english, we do not say they get 100% free health care, we say they can get on the public option! @Chris - Answer this question: the bill does not require proof of citizenship and the Dems voted down an amendment that would add that to the bill, how do you prevent someone from getting a tax credit when you don't check for eligibility?

how would illegals get a tax credit if they're not paying taxes... you're not making much sense, and wasting my time

@Chris - Then why did they write that provision?

@Chris - These are refundable tax credits where the Gov cuts you a check.

Yep, seriously! I agree with the person in the story who said this church must be a cult!

Isn't the conventional wisdom that hybrid sales are pretty much directly tied to gas prices? Prices go up, everybody runs for a hybrid. Prices head back down, everybody forgets about it.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, in part. But now that gas prices are headed back up, and this time probably won't slip, you can bet hybrid sales will pick up too. And with more hybrid models coming on line, economies of scale should start shrinking the price differential.
