Republicans' new go-to slur: 'Socialist!' - International Herald Tribune - http://www.iht.com/article...
"Conservatives might be seeking a spiritual leader, organizing principle and fresh identity, but they at least seem to have settled on a favorite rhetorical ogre: socialism. As in, Democrats are intent on forcing socialism on the "U.S.S.A" (as the bumper sticker says, under the words "Comrade Obama"). It seems that "socialist" has supplanted "liberal" as the go-to slur among much of a conservative world confronting a one-two-three punch of bank bailouts, budget blowouts and stimulus bills. Right-leaning bloggers and talk radio hosts are wearing out the brickbat. Senate and House Republicans have been tripping over their podiums to invoke it." - Vampire Hunter DYSP from Bookmarklet
Ah, political correctness. A euphemism that most liberals never liked and only conservatives still insist exists. - Vampire Hunter DYSP
And last I checked, Peter, political correctness never got a Congressional committee together to hound people out of their jobs due to a manufactured political scare tactic. - Vampire Hunter DYSP
That's not a new slur. Those people think that Socialism and Communism are interchangable and have been using both as long as I've been alive to describe Democrats. - Anika
So you're saying that a majority of scientists is in on a massive political conspiracy to get people to recycle stuff and stop polluting, Mark? - Vampire Hunter DYSP
Granted, there are aspects of this argument that are dodgy (buying your way out of polluting???), but overall, the message is sound: we've been screwing up the weather for quite a while, and now it's catching up to us. - Vampire Hunter DYSP from IM
There's a difference between concept (we have a problem) and process (how do you fix the problem). - Vampire Hunter DYSP
You don't see carbon credits as applying free market principles to fix what were previously market-unaccounted negative externalities? - Andrew C (✔)
When I visit "socialist" countries (like most of those in Europe) I notice that they don't have beggars in the streets, they have nice public transportation, that their streets don't have potholes like CA's do, and health care for everyone and their schools are a lot better than ours. Oh, and many of their employees get six weeks of vacation a year. Maybe I am a socialist! Maybe we all should be! - Robert Scoble
So you don't see climate change as a credible threat to us, Mark? I mean, if you agree that recycling is good and pollution is bad, what is your argument other than that carbon credits aren't a good way to solve the problem (which I agree with in principle, although if they get people to think about the impact they are having on the environment, they might have an overall positive impact). - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Mark, there's no such thing as socialism, democracy, capitalism, etc. These are all ideals that don't exist in the real world. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Mark: whenever someone tells me that nature doesn't get a helping hand from man when it goes screwy, I always refer them to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... With over 600 million vehicles in use right now, to say nothing of the pollution that industry regularly spews out in the air and water, I find it hard to believe that we ***don't*** have a detrimental effect on climate. - Vampire Hunter DYSP from IM
Massive herds of animals =! a year's worth of industrial waste, Mark. - Vampire Hunter DYSP from IM
So only fanbois of Al Gore believe that humans are causing climate change? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
And i submit to you that, just because Al Gore is the person who woke up many people's awareness on the subject, this doesn't diminish the message. Don't shoot the messenger just cuz you didn't like the guy he used to hang around with. - Vampire Hunter DYSP from IM
Wow. That's an interesting construct, Mark. Horribly flawed and wrong, but interesting. - Vampire Hunter DYSP from IM
Projection. As authoritarians always have some figure to follow, they assume that non-authoritarians do to. Hence they think that biologists worship Darwin, or climatologists Gore. We only care about the data, though, as we tend to think that understanding reality will help us deal with it. - Bora Zivkovic
++++Bora - Anika
I was going to say "Ditto to Anika", but then I realized that might play right into Mark's worldview... =) Still, Bora's right. - Andrew C (✔)
Mark isn't Republican because Mark is a conservative. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
