[Brother]: Loren is in the hospital. His face became swollen and the MRI shows a 4.6cm tumor in the left frontal lobe. We are all waiting for more information. Surgery may be tonight or tomorrow. He wants everyone to know that he is smiling and has confidence in the doctors.
For those who don't know Loren, Loren Heiny develops applications, such as the Silverlight-based Search TIP and Math TIP, MathPractice, WebcamNotes, ShareKMC, and many more. Loren has written numerous books on programming and is an experienced commerical software developer. His first love is Robotics. Microsoft has awarded Loren a Tablet PC MVP each year since 2003.

Please tell Loren we're thinking of him and PLEASE keep us updated. Moving this to my front page for monitoring closely.
- Molly
Loren's tumor is 4.6cm by 3.5 cm by 2.5 cm - no spines. No surgery tonight. We are waiting for more decisions .... radiologist said it would be rare for this to be related to the colon cancer .. but that must be determined.

I am SO sorry to hear this news of Loren. Please let him know what he is in our thoughts and prayers. We will also be praying for any of the specialists whose care he will be under. May God be watching over Loren and your family during this time my friend. Please keep us posted as you can.

Loren is in Scottsdale Memorial Hospital I am talking with him on the phone. He told me to check Friendfeed for his thread :) He looked from his iPhone (yes, the new 3gs). Larry just left to get some sleep so I'm talking with him to distract. Mom & Dad will go to Phoenix tomorrow. We'll know more tomorrow. Please send positive thoughts and thank you for your thoughtful support.

Wow, Loren can't catch a break. So he has a brain tumor? Is it on the surface of the brain? My mother in law had a bigger one that that, had it operated on, and is fine today. Her behavior was very weird for a while, though. She couldn't draw the right side of a clock, for instance. This is scary stuff and it bums me out. Loren has a lot of well wishers. For everyone who doesn't know...

Sorry to hear this - I hope you get good news from the doctors.

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date on Loren's progress. Hugs and prayers for him and his family.

Loren has a team of doctors discussing options. The radiologist spoke to my oldest brother and said it would be rare for the tumor to be related to the cancer Loren has been fighting for the past several years. The good news is that they are presently thinking this situation is operable. Robert -- Loren's memory started to fail and one of his friends noticed the change. This probably saved Loren's life.

We found out this morning that the steroids taken last night have reduced the swelling around his eye.

Loren, I need some help on a tablet app, do you have your pc with you? Take care man our thoughts and prayers are with you. /frankgo

6/26 Update: The surgeon decided Loren's "small-sized lemon" tumor is urgent but not an emergency. The assumption is now that the tumor is related to the other cancer (very rare). The surgery will take approximately 4 hours. He'll spend 2 days in ICU and 2-5 more days in the hospital. After 2 weeks of bed rest, the doctors will do another full body scan. He had a positive reaction to the steroids and the edema has gone down.

LPH: good to hear. Yeah, brain tumors cause weird behavior changes. My mother in law couldn't recognize ANYTHING to the right of her. The brain is very amazing. The good thing is that she got back all that ability within a month. The brain routes around damage very well so I'm hopeful Loren will have a full recovery. Thoughts are with the Heiny's. Not fun to go through. If I ever go through this, make sure it's at a hospital with wifi! :-)

Positive vibes are heading towards Loren from down under. Keep the good thoughts flowing.
- Neil Roodyn
Oh, so very sad to hear this. I wish him all the best. All his relatives too.
- Ton Zijp
Sending all the best to you and Loren - you are in my thoughts.
- comix aka martha
Good luck- and a friend of mine survived a similar tumor so hopefully it will work out well!

Robert - we are hoping his memory recovers after this surgery. Amazing that he could keep 20k lines of code in his head - and now he wonders whether he took his meds for the day -- but he keeps on smiling. Frank: I missed your previous message. I hate to break it to you - but Loren didn't want any computers with him at the hospital. Only the Apple iPhone 3G S is by his side. He appreciates everyone's kind notes and good will. He's stronger today than yesterday.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
That's a relief. Hang in there Loren :)
- Rodfather
LPH: I'm hopeful as long as the tumor is on the surface of the brain. If it's embedded then things get tougher. It was amazing to see how my mother-in-law couldn't draw pictures, or tell you who is standing to her right. But she could do everything on the left. That all came back, so I'm hopeful his memory will come back too.
- Robert Scoble
Thank you for the updates. Sending good positive vibes for Loren & family.
- Maria Niles
Sorry to hear, I hope he gets better soon.
- Tyson Key
Robert, pictures are showing the tumor is "in the best position" - close to the skull.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Luck and strength to Loren and all of you. Hope he'll be clamoring for his computers again very soon!
- MiniMage
Sorry to hear the news last night. Today sounds more promising. Good vibes from Seattle. Hoping ur restIng well and will keep waiting for updates.
- Eliot
Update: I made a mistake earlier regarding Loren's memory. Actually, it's aphasia. He can't speak the memory but can type it. Loren's been asking for a computer to type out some ideas.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Wow, that's so interesting. He can type the words but not say them?
- anna sauce
Surgery is scheduled for 2 pm PDT. Yes Anna. He does speak but gets tied up with the words.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Sending positive thoughts for a successful surgery.
- Mike Doeff
My thoughts and prayers for you and Loren.
- Kathleen Forden
Loren recorded a little video before surgery http://www.youtube.com/watch... Surgery started on time at 2pm. The mid-surgery update we received was that it's going well. We think we'll hear more around 6pm. LPH is on his way to PHX then hospital - Walter is getting ready to leave the hospital to pick 'em up. (thanks, Walter!!!)
- Lora Heiny
Dr just came through. Went well. No real surprises or complications. Biopsy showed tumor is the same metastatic adenocarcinoma as before. Thinks he got all. Radiation will take care of rest. We can go see him in ICU in about 1/2 hr
- Lora Heiny
Using it right now on a UMPC. It takes some horsepower and RAM, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Did you have to reinstall the Slingbox itself?
- Dave Winer
Dave, I did have to update the Slingbox firmware and run through the basic setup again, but it was relatively painless IMO. About 10 minutes and I was up and running. It's PC only, but worth giving a try. You can always revert back to the current GA version. Love the DVR-like functions and the electronic programming guide, but remember, it's a beta.
