I've been using this for a few days now and it's working quite well. Sometimes, the email addresses appear a beat funky to the recipients, but so far everybody's been getting their emails. How's it been for you? - Carlos Granier-Phelps
does the Groups app do this? and if not, why? - Clint McManaman from BuddyFeed
I haven't tried the Groups app, though it's been mentioned a few times. I'll check it out now to see exactly how they deal with this issue. One thing, though, my solution is free ;-) - Carlos Granier-Phelps
Checked out Groups and it can't do photos yet. The Camera application allows you to email up to 3 photos per message - however you can't interface the Camera app with the Groups app. There's another app called MultiPhoto that allows you to send multiple photos but not to multiple recipients. - Carlos Granier-Phelps
UPDATED: Now works with most email services and eliminates the Invalid Address dialog box. - Carlos Granier-Phelps

YouTube - Yet another Obama indoctrination video of kids from Sand Hill Elementary School in Asheville, NC
Play
Starting at 0:08 "Hope! Uniting blacks and whites. Hope! Being both, Obama cannot take sides." So, they're saying that Obama can do no wrong because of his mixed race? That's not indoctrination or anything. o.O - David C. Cooper from Bookmarklet
Debunked and what's more, the same thing has been done by your best buddy, Bush: http://mediamatters.org/print... - please stop spreading this nonsensical, thinly veiled racist bullshit. - Rene Wirtz
Kids never had to sing a song claiming that Bush "cannot take sides" because he's black AND white. >.> - David C. Cooper
Right ... http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/split+h..., but in this case the subject is bald. - Rene Wirtz
Calling this "splitting hairs" is where you lose. There is a HUGE differencef between crediting Bush for his hard work helping the victims of Katrina and indoctrinating kids to believe Obama is omnipotent. - David C. Cooper
OMFG, giving Bush credit for his hard work helping the victims of Katrina is where you #epicfail. Bush's ineptitude and FEMA's inability (and I would go as far as to say their unwillingness) to do *anything* for the victims of Katrina is probably one of the biggest failures in the history of mankind and certainly one of Bush's worst mistakes. - Rene Wirtz
Wrong again, the failure of Katrina was all on the local government. The Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana turned down federal aid then turned around and blamed the Bush for not acting. - David C. Cooper
From "A Failure of Initiative: Final Report of the Select Bipartisan Committee to Investigate the Preparation for and Response to Hurricane Katrina" (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/katrina...): 1) Tardy and ineffective execution of the National Response Plan. 2) An under-trained and under-staffed Federal Emergency Management Agency. 3) A Catastrophic Incident Annex that was... more... - Rene Wirtz
From your same source: "The failure of complete evacuations led to preventable deaths, great suffering, and further delays in relief" (p. 2) Guess who was responsible for evacuation? "Levees protecting New Orleans were not built for the most severe hurricanes" (p. 2) Again, a local issue. "The collapse of local law enforcement and lack of effective public communications led to civil... more... - David C. Cooper
David, respectfully, you are so full of shit, you read what you want to read and what you don't want to read you don't and then you turn around and tell me that I don't understand or misread the report. Guess who was responsible for issueing the warning too late to all counties in Louisiana? Guess who appointed someone completely unqualified as the head of FEMA? Guess who barricaded the... more... - Rene Wirtz
The late "warning?" You mean the people who didn't bother to issue the evacuation order until 19 hours before landfall? Well page two of your own source says this: "Despite adequate warning 56 hours before landfall, Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin delayed ordering a mandatory evacuation in New Orleans until 19 hours before landfall." And you're claiming that there was some conspiracy to... more... - David C. Cooper
Katrina is the perfect example of liberal government management. Wait until after the disaster to prepare, then complain nobody helps them, and them starts the blame game. Oh, can't forget the race card! - Spencer
Anyways, the Obama-cult is getting very disturbing. - Spencer
Amen! - David C. Cooper
I think the (racist) denial of you fringers is beyond disturbing. Not only are you coward, backstabbing backpedalers, but you also have blinders on the size of your humongous ego. Everything you read you decontextualize and twist to fit your need and understanding without even grasping the simplest of implications. I pity you, but then again, I had no hope nor regard for you anyway. - Rene Wirtz
Personally I'm all for my daughter looking up to the President and singing his praises. I mean, he's certainly a more realistic and positive figure to look up to than some fictional Easter Bunny / Santa Claus type (feel free to read into where I'm going with that...). I mean, really - he's the President. Our first BLACK President. I think that's pretty significant and praise worthy. Or should my daughter praise Tom Delay shaking his ass on television? - Vince DeGeorge
Vince, do you also think your daughter should be taught that the President can't make mistakes because of his mixed race? - David C. Cooper
Rene, you can't uphold a cogent argument so again you devolve to personal attacks and insults. In this case the teacher brought race into the equation with the lyrics they created for this indoctrination song. You are the racist. You cannot see beyond the race issue and cannot seem to have a discussion about the man, his policies or associations without resorting to playing the race card. I guess I can't expect much more for someone operating on reserve brain cells, like you. - David C. Cooper
And all the while they continue the Cult of Obama, he's off to Denmark on the tax payer's dime ensuring that his buddies in Chicago get rich off the the slums they've created there. - Craig Eddy
@David: I have told you before that I have no desire to discuss anything political or societal with you, because you don't know your asshole from a hole in the ground when it comes to these topics. And as I said before, I think you are despicable affront to humankind. You constantly playing the reverse racist card proves it. You, my friend, are a oxygen stealer. Good day! - Rene Wirtz
Rene, is somebody holding your hand forcing you to post in these discussions? The really funny part about your posts is that you seem to think your comments are actually witty and relevant. - David C. Cooper
But, of course, I've got a communisct, socialist, fascist prompter from ACORN here, because I could never in my wildest outwit and be more relevant than you, since you know it all. - Rene Wirtz
And, when we see something that is such a flagrant lie we will come in and call bullshit, since you are also full of that, too. - Rene Wirtz
Oh wait, maybe that's my alter ego talking ... I'm confused now ... - Rene Wirtz
You say you have no desire to discuss anything with me yet here you are, still posting. I think you're stalking me. Sorry, I don't swing that way, dude. - David C. Cooper

Sorry to my brother, who seems to love it, whatever it is, but, YES. - Kamilah Gill
It works for any FB app. You can hide just the app instead of the person. I've done it lots. And lots. And lots. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I couldn't agree more! - Sandra Large
I have all application posts disabled so no one knows that I play Mafia Wars. Wait a minute....Crap! - Faraz Mullick
for me, "block application" is a better feature. - Ozgur Demir
Just hid Mafia Wars. Take that, little brother! (Now to hide Farm Town and Farmville...) - Dennis Jernberg
For some apps, "block" works better. My current blocks: SocialCalendar, Causes, Vampire Wars, The True Age Test, Mafia Wars. Although I am surprised at how few people know the "Hide" feature exists. It's been there since the new news feed took effect, and I'm always having people tell me (IRL) that they don't like Facebook because of all the stupid apps that appear in their feed. When I tell people to hide them, they're usually completely unaware that that is even possible. - Otto
I do have to admit, I'm addicted to mafia wars and farmville lol. - Jason Williams from iPhone
But that doesn't stop Facebook from inflicting Mafia Wars ads on you. - Kevin Pedraja
Kevin: Firefox + AdBlock Plus. - Otto

Actually, it does, as far as I can tell. I don't see things that I've hidden in the iPhone app either. - Otto

Yale student's body found stuffed in the wall of her lab - NYTimes.com
Yale student's body found stuffed in the wall of her lab - NYTimes.com
"It was supposed to have been Annie Le’s wedding night. But hours after the missing Yale graduate student was to have been married, investigators found a body stuffed inside a wall of the lab building where she was last seen alive on Tuesday." - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
It's disturbing how little they seem to know about what happened, but perhaps they just aren't telling reporters. - Bret Taylor
How tragic. - Anne Bouey
@Bret - I think they're still in the 'gathering evidence' phase of things. The article on CNN mentioned that they have a great deal of physical evidence from her lab that they have to go through, as well as whatever they're retrieving from the waste processing plant. It's so sad that it turned out this way. - Jennifer Dittrich
..."stuffed inside a wall?"...horrible - .LAG liked that
Sick! :( - Mathew A. Koeneker
oh god, this is horrible... - Roudi B
:((((((( - AJ Batac
The killing is sad enough but the fact that it happened on her wedding night is just horrific. - Spidra Webster
O, I have been monitoring this but but this is first I heard of her murder. Prayer for her parents and betrothed. deep Sadness - Melanie Reed
@Spidra: the reference to the 'wedding night' is that the day that her body was found is *supposed* to be her wedding night, had she not been missing. The act of murder itself IMO happened several days prior. Of course she went missing so there was no wedding. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo
@LAG, her body was found in the crawlspace behind the wallboards, i.e., the space used for cables, plumbing, etc. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo
It sounds like she got a call from someone she knew associated with the lab (she left her purse , ID and cell in another building). Someone close or or someone she had worked with? She was aware of taking care of herself (she wrote an article on protection and being safe in the city), so why would she leave her cell unless she knew and trusted who ever she was last with? - Melanie Reed
now, a personal dilemma for me: I think this news is important; but I can't bring myself to 'like' this... What to do? That said, condolences & prayers to her family and her fiancé. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo
Or it could be that this call unnerved her and she rushed over to the lab without thinking. Whatever it was, to help or in anxiousness, she broke a habit. - Melanie Reed
@Pandu as long as you comment on it, the story gets moved to the top of FF and more people can see it. That helps a lot. I want to share my condolences & prayers to her family and loved ones too. - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
Pandu: I was just about to write the same comment, Weird. Bret, can we get a "horrified" button next to "Like" :) - Bryan Lee
Probably someone she rejected who couldn't handle the fact she was getting married. Proabably a guy who she considered 'a friend', but felt much stronger for her. He confessed his love there in the lab, she rejected his final plea and he killed her. That's pretty much the way I see it going down. Guys can be nuts like that over women. - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
My thoughts exactly, Vince. Had to be someone she worked with. - Ginger Makela Riker
Vince, yeah, I think that should be considered. It was either because she was too smart (jealousy) or too loved (jealousy). Or there could be a third reason because of something we don't know about something that she may have been involved in that threatened her future that is an unknown. The killer was not very smart about hiding her body. If they were, they would have taken the time... more... - Melanie Reed
Now, the picture I saw was of her outside the building in the daylight. How could you kill someone with wounds that would obviously cause crying out in pain and no one in that building or in an office nearby not hear it? Someone had to see something or hear something. Was the office completely empty? - Melanie Reed
I wonder who the Prof was she was working under.....what was their relationship? - Melanie Reed
This is an instance where I would feel uncomfortable "liking" a posting on FriendFeed. - Rolf Schewe
Holy sh*t....that is messed up. - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
I'm against burying people in walls... for the record. - SAM
geez - browneyes from iPhone
One other thing strikes me as strange: They were in a lab. She was a pharmacology student. It took 3 levels of security to get in there: "He said it took three levels of security to get into the basement of the lab building on Amistad Street, including two swipes of a security card." Here's a meta-post http://ff.im/7ZvND I'm been following this story for the past few days. I used to work in biochem labs, so it's pretty spooky. (1) Animal rights activist? Jealous/unhinged guy who's a staff member? Stolen security card? (2) Early on I heard mention that she went in the building with a guy...but haven't seen that since. (3) She walks from/to her office & this lab... more... - Mitchell Tsai
this is horrible! :-( - Jannifer @wordsforliving
Mitchell good meta-post. We don't have enough info especially about her daily routine. You make some compelling suggestions. She's recorded as going in at 10:00am. Was this routine? Here's a couple of AP postings: http://news.yahoo.com/s... |... more... - Melanie Reed
"We're not believing it's a random act," said officer Joe Avery, a police spokesman. No one else is in danger, he said, though he would not provide details other than to say that police believe no other students were involved. He also denied reports that police had a suspect in custody. Several news organizations reported that police were interviewing a possible suspect who failed a polygraph test and has defensive wounds on his body. Avery denied those reports." - Melanie Reed
The problem is the relationship to the killer. How long and how close? Why didn't he/she do this where she lived? Why in a public lab? - Melanie Reed
Creepy stuff. Only students and staff allowed in the building. There is a real creep on campus. - PJ Edwards
I think a phone call can be ruled out IF this was a routine day for her. On one article it states that she could be seen with a cart going back and forth with the lab mice. The lab mice are located in the basement where her body was: "The body was found in the basement in the wall chase — a deep recess where utilities and cables run between floors. The basement houses rodents, mostly... more... - Melanie Reed
It's possible if the scenario above is true that she might not have even known the killer that well at all. Perhaps the killer was already there and was doing something that was wrong and she threatened to report them. Then they killed her and stuffed her in the most immediate and convenient place. - Melanie Reed

Went over my text message allocation again, switching to Google Voice (with no fwd'ing!) finally. How do you cut down on txting fees?
The majority of the people with whom I exchange texts are on my network (Verizon) so those are free. The majority of the texts I pay for are to Twitter. Still, I don't get anywhere close to my limit each month. - Eric Geller

Why, oh why, is Google Reader down?
Seems to be working for me. - Akiva Moskovitz
I just used it 2 minutes ago, too - Ade
"People You Follow" shows only one item even if there are many unread items. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Our feeds work fine. Can't access shared items! - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
was down also for me but back now - Ouriel Ohayon
ok, it looks like a distributed load problem like Gmail the other day. Thanks Akiva, Ouriel. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
It shows only 1 item even if I have lots of unread items from people I follow. Been trying and checking for over 4 hours now. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Works for me. - Kol Tregaskes
I have a window open from before the crash, and it works except I can't add any new followers. I'm not closing that window this gets fixed. - Wallace
Wallace: Lucky you! :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Google Contacts has been disconnected from Google Reader. I've been able to follow several people since this problem started, but their names only show on my contacts page. I do get their updates as new comments in my Google Reader, but I have no name to attach to groups. I can like their shared items, and also comment on their shared items and my 'comments' label turns to bold text whenever someone updates ( including myself ). - Wallace
Maybe you're right. I can't even get to the people I follow list, since the "You are following..." message is not visible. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
All data about followed and followers has disappeared from Contacts. It was there yesterday so I suspect Wallace is right about the disconnect. - Polly Potter
Well, it's bedtime here in India and I'm all done for the weekend. Let's see how Google Reader behaves tomorrow morning! - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, I'm having similar problems, and now I can't add any notes or see my own shared items. - Kamilah Gill
Kamilah, the latest shared item of yours that I can see is from two days ago. Have you shared since then? - Wallace
Working for me. - Ben Hanten
Mine has started to screw up. I cannot like or share anything. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, your latest is about DMCA takedown policy. Is this your last shared item? - Wallace
Wallace, I've tried a few more. What is my latest now? I cannot see anything on my Shared Items page. It's all going Pete Tong. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
Kol, you posted about concept art - Wallace
Latest share should be 'Manual Toothbrush Handle + Toothpaste Tube Squeezer'. - Kol Tregaskes
Yes Kol, "manual toothbrush" item is displayed. - Wallace
OK, so visual not working but actually working. :-) I still cannot see my shared items, comments view is only partially working. - Kol Tregaskes
Thanks, Wallace. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Your welcome Kol - Wallace
Shares are showing up, but with no profile pictures. Also, my follow list is empty. - Harrison Powers
I'm definitely experiencing "people you follow" being empty. Much angst here. Well, maybe not really. Virtual angst, maybe? Much else on google reader seems fine. :D - Rob Schieber
stll nothing.... - Chris Bellinger
Wallace, I might not have shared anything else in that time span. Can't really remember, I post in so many places. Gr definitely is messed up for me now - Kamilah Gill from email
I see no avatars and no comments in mobile, though comments view has items. I hope thus means some fixes we've wanted are on the way, but some notice would be good. Why are we always being notified after the fact? - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
This is what is happening to me (http://ff.im/7JFoG).. Be careful about using it when it is having problems.. hopefully it is JUST a front end issue!! Kol I'm seeing the same thing!! Anyone else getting javascript errors? - Chris Myles
not working for me, cannot open sharing settings and do not see people I am following - Gerald Hildebrandt
Still the same. Thanks everyone - when I first reported the issue I got swamped with a 'works fine for me' response on Twitter. Now I feel much better. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Chris - never had any javascript errors at my end. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Google Reader seems to be working great for me. If there are any issues with slowness, I had assigned them to our hotel's network. But yes, you can see I am still sharing items. - Louis Gray
Louis: Many people have reported the issue, so it may be a load distribution problem affecting only some. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
There's a support ticket at JS-Kit Echo that GR shared items are not showing up: http://support.js-kit.com/jskit... - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I guess we'll have to wait till it stops working for Louis. Then we'll get a response from the GR team. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, you're very silly. :) Is there a Google Groups discussion going on here? - Louis Gray
Louis, come on, we've all seen it happen before. :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
As a workaround, I've been using the German Google Reader with much success. Same keyboard shortcuts ;) http://www.google.de/reader/ - Harrison Powers
Harrison: that's a brilliant idea! Works like a charm. :) I just discovered there are a dozen new people following me after my article on Feedly yesterday. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I love the internet! Always find an answer somewhere! - David Slater
hmmm doesn't work for me .. hopefully I'm not totally screwed!! - Chris Myles
Lot's of people have been trying to use GR as their new social network... this outage (with silence) does not bode well. I fear we'll lose many we gained. It's one thing to be buggy or lack some functionality, but a different thing all together to lose almost all functionality and not keep your users informed. Have we learned nothing? - Vince DeGeorge
Nothing all day(15 hours) - Myrna
Oh, except I can add new RSS which goes through because I can access the subscription page. - Myrna
That's a quick way to ruin my day. I use Google Reader soo much. - Hunt from FreshFeed
Hunt, same here. Myrna: did you try using the German version? Worked for me. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Thanks Harrison, the German version seems to work for me! Now maybe I can shut the working window down without fear...oops never mind....I'm stuck with the open window.. - Wallace
Yes, I went through most of everyone's items already. So are we in German from now on lol - Myrna
Yes, let's say "Danke Schön, Herr Harrison!" :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Actually - Norwegian & Polish version is working here, too - thanks for the info, Harrison. And well, 'long live open communication!' ;) :) - Hanna Wiszniewska
I'm in German now and it works - M F
German localized version is also working for me (in Germany ;-) ), but not English UI - Gerald Hildebrandt
Hmm, I continue to have the same problems everyone has mentioned with Reader after almost 24 hours now. The German version will work, but I don't read German. Is there a way around the language barrier? - John Ladd
John, you don't have to read German really if you know GR. The posts are in English. If you use the German page you will see how familiar it becomes..mostly! :) - Myrna
What about Jenna. I will message her on fb. She is one of the GR staff. - Myrna
Myrna: Go, girl, go! We need some 'pull' here. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I don't understand why Louis can't shed some light on this issue. Oh well, he's probably playing with his adorable twins on Labor Day weekend. - Myrna
Back to German :) - Myrna
Mine is working; I'm in US. Google Contact info still missing but shows in GR. - Polly Potter
Actually, Reader's working for me although not consistently. I'm often having to mark read a number of articles several times before they're actually marked as such. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, wonder why its working for some and not for others. Most of the people I follow now are working on the German page. - Myrna
I've set up a new Google Account ( wallace.lockhart2@gmail.com ) to try and solve this problem on my end. My new profile page ( http://www.google.com/profile... ) is up, and I've imported all my contacts from my old account ( wallace.lockhart@gmail.com ). My followers/followees are viewable now in my GR so far comments are functional. If someone could visit the new profile, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. - Wallace
Thanks, Myrna. I suppose I should have thought of that! Thanks for pointing out that I was missing the obvious. :P - John Ladd
Wallace, I subbed to your new GR but it is not showing up yet. - Polly Potter
I got it Polly, thanks! It seems to be working now. I'll leave a comment on your latest shared item. - Wallace
Now the English version is busted; can still read subs but people I follow is empty. Can see them in the German version. - Polly Potter
isn't this fun? - Chris Myles
Ok, I thought it was just me. Thanks, Hanna, for pointing me in the right direction. - Damond Nollan
German UI does not provide Send To functionality - Gerald Hildebrandt
Is GR trying to implement rssCloud? - Polly Potter
Now it seems to no longer be working for me. I haven't seen an update in hours. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think Google is out to lunch for the Labor Day weekend. - Wallace
Can't blame 'em. - Akiva Moskovitz
ok.. Mine is still down, and had been since Saturday morning. There is a GetSatisfaction ticket open http://getsatisfaction.com/google_... - Jez Arnold
Just adding that I too have this issue, I am also mentioning it on the get satisfaction ticket. - Alex Kessinger
Jez: Thanks for pointing to the GS ticket. Added myself. Geez, when is this going to be fixed? - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Hey all, I moved from the German page to the French. It's working fine. Do you know how to get there? Think its settings. - Myrna
Wallace, I still see your old account but I can't comment on your page. I can comment on most others. Does it have anything to do with groups? - Myrna
Just use http://www.google.fr/reader/ instead of http://www.google.de/reader to move from German to French. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Myrna/Wallace: Think so. Because in order to comment, the user should have added you to a group. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Myrna, I have removed everyone from groups on my old page. I still have links to those contacts in GR, and periodically try to add them. No success yet. This may be link rot. Rapid link rot. Here's my new shared items link; http://www.google.com/reader... Until Google gets this straightened out, I"ll be sharing from one page and pushing feeds out of the other. Oh well, it's free. Thanks for your concern, patience and help folks. - Wallace
Wallace, can't you just go to the French or German page and continue from there. It's the same and I can comment and like everything. - Myrna
I tried the German and Polish pages, and both behaved as the English (US) page. But never mind that! I just discovered that I can follow my old tagged feeds that I push out of my old account and continue to post in my new account! That means I don't need two accounts! Woo hoo...! - Wallace
ENGLISH is working now!!!! - Myrna
Not for everyone... I'm still down. - Vince DeGeorge
I'm still down. And out for the night. Got to go to work in the am. I make pasta, so remember, pasta is the new potato.... - Wallace
Wow! Thanks, Myrna. Hope it works soon for everyone else. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
All the best, Wallace. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
UPDATE FROM GOOGLE: The GR team says "We've rolled out a workaround for this problem, reloading Reader should enable you to see your friends list (and other functionality) correctly again." Everyone, please sign out of Google Reader, restart your browser, login again. It should work. (From GetSatisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/google_...) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Yep, we just rolled out a workaround. If you're still having problems after reloading, please reply in the GetSatisfaction thread. - Mihai Parparita
It worked for me without signing out of google and without reloading. Just changed the settings from French to English. - Myrna
Everything back to "normal" for me as of 22:30 PDT - Richard ¿digame? Walker
In case you are wondering what happened, the response is here http://ff.im/7JFoG. - Chris Myles
Chris, thanks for the update! I wonder if yours was an extra-special case though, since if the specific use case of someone you're following adding their "Like" stream to Google Profile was the issue, then folks like Louis Gray would also have been affected, since he follows the same people and many more (I believe) than all of us who had the problem. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Yeah I'm not sure but I am glad they came back with a response.. I'll be even happier when I can get my comments out to back them up or use externally. - Chris Myles

I pledge allegiance to Obama - http://www.wnd.com/index...
I pledge allegiance to Obama
In a new YouTube video produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions, dozens of celebrities – television and movie actors, sports heroes, musicians and more – describe how they will pledge to "be the change" and "be a servant to our president." - Craig Eddy from Bookmarklet
The Obama cult. - Spencer
Because if you think on your own, his policies aren't so great? - Robert Hafer from iPhone
Ooh - a link from wnd! LOL! - Internet's Tad
@Tad So what that it's from WND, can you comment on the content? - Spencer
World Nut Daily is the BEST humor on the web, they just don't know it yet - William Harryman
Notice how liberals cannot comment about the cult, but proceed to attack WND. - Spencer
Spencer, I am not a liberal, I'm a rational human being - William Harryman
Minus the rabble-rousing inane article, it's just a video of pretty, rich people talking about what they want to do to make the country a better place. Who cares? It's the article itself that attempts to turn it into something sinister. Just about everything on WND is complete bat-shit insanity. It's poison for the mind and the soul. - Internet's Tad
Why do people have to pledge themselves to Obama? Can't they think for themselves? I would say "no". - Spencer
"Court document swears Kenyan birth cert legit" CRAZY. "Kentucky split on Obama's true birthplace" CRAZY "The birth certificate movie every American must see" CRAZY "Help us reach 500,000 seeking eligibility proof!" CRAZY "New 'Survival Seed Bank' plants full-acre crisis garden!" CRAZY "Will a 'red' help blacks go green?" CRAZY I rest my case. - Internet's Tad
Comment in the article: "One cynical poster responds, "Why did it take Obama to get elected for these Hollywood libs to pledge? Be a better father? Why did you wait so long?"" -- Maybe because Obama inspires these people to actually do something productive, while our previous president only inspired fear and loathing - I don't like the pledging to Obama (that's just silly), but I DO... more... - William Harryman
I love it. Shoot the messenger, ignore the narcissist President. - Spencer
What did the president have to do with this message, Spencer? Please, also tell me which of our previous presidents haven't been narcissistic. You're seeing things that aren't there. What the thinker thinks the prover proves. - Internet's Tad
Are you kidding? What recent President had their own logo, their own "brand" created around them, has a cult-like following? - Spencer
narcissist? do you know what the word means? How often does Obama say "we" - then consider how often Bush said "I" - William Harryman
Why post links or videos of celebrities? Why not just say: I hate Obama? Which is kind of the point, right? - Derrick
In his school speech, Obama uses the word "I" 56 times, the word "country" 7 times. Yep, nothing strange there. - Spencer
LOL, Spencer!! OMG. Minus the logo, you're describing George W Bush!!! And, hell, the W itself was his logo. Geeze, haven't you seen the Bible Camp movie with the kids praying to the cardboard cutout of Pres Bush? I'm not saying that President Obama doesn't have a following, but it's certainly no more dangerous than W's. - Internet's Tad
Spencer, are you insinuating that Obama personally created the logo, brand etc. or was it his followers, whom he has little control over? - Jeff P. Henderson
What about people who only read the books that Oprah tells them to read for her book club? Do we fault them for belonging to the cult of Oprah or congratulate them for renewing an interest in reading? - Trish R
LOL. I love ya spencer, you never quit. - Richard Lawler
"What recent President ... has a cult-like following?" - uh, Bush: "you're either with us or against us" - that's cult lingo - William Harryman
I'm sorry, you just can't argue rationally with a link from WND. That's like trying to argue rationally with someone about animal cruelty that posts an essay from PETA, or talking rationally about immigration re: a link from a militia site. - Internet's Tad
You can't compare Bush "following" to Obama, day and night difference. A "W" used on bumper stickers is nothing like the Presidential logo he created for himself. - Spencer
@Trish, I really don't give a shit about Oprah, she is not the leader of the country. - Spencer
Spencer, again - children praying to a cardboard cutout of Bush. LOL. You lose. - Internet's Tad
It's not about WND. Forget WND. It's about a campaign of people pledging themselves to Obama like he's a friggin messiah. Sorry (well not really), but that is far more creepy than anything related to Bush followers. - Spencer
LOL @ Tad Ooooh, cardboard cutout, check this - http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Spencer
There are tons more of creepy things like that. - Spencer
What exactly is creepy about it spencer? - Richard Lawler
Ummm......if I have to explain why that is creepy, then there is no hope. - Spencer
For every creepy Obama thing you can find, I can find more W stuff. Ultimately it's irrelevant. Your man started an immoral war, tortured people and heralded in the worst economy we've seen since the 30s. President Obama wants to give everyone access to health care. I'll chose the later. - Internet's Tad
I voted for Obama, but I haven't "pledged" myself to him. What the hell does that mean anyway? - Trish R
I think that the fact that you're so ignorant you can't recognize a fraternity step when you see it is more telling than your lack of "hope." - Richard Lawler
Not really. It's pretty typical for someone to blame the economy on Bush, but in reality Obama has made it 10x worse than it was under Bush. How is that stimulus money going btw? And if you missed it, Obama has kept this so-called torture open, and isn't Gitmo still open anyways? - Spencer
I find it hilarious that people think Obama is somehow different than any other politician. His poll numbers are diving big time, why do you think that is? - Spencer
The "Servant to Obama" bit disturbs me. AFAIC, we are in so much trouble, 'cuz politicians of the past forgot their duties to serve US. I've no problem w/ being asked to help our leaders improve our country, & those who call themselves Christians are told by their Bibles to serve their fellow man, as much as many would like to forget that & just focus on themselves. The message was... more... - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
You've been claiming his poll numbers are diving since before he was elected, how are they not zero yet? - Richard Lawler
@Richard They are headed that way? Why are his poll numbers so low? - Spencer
Spencer, do you think President Obama is a secret Muslim too? Is he a Marxist? - Internet's Tad
Sounds like Obama Derangement Syndrome. It's worse than swine flu, and contagious through ignorance. - Steve Lowe
I think he is a socialist, and I question his religious "status". - Spencer
But if they were diving 8 months ago, how can they still be diving? Were they not really diving then? Are we in the second, third, or 100th dive? - Richard Lawler
Do you think that George W Bush was a socialist as well? - Internet's Tad
@Richard Look at the polls, please explain them. - Spencer
@Tad I don't care about Bush. He was just as bad with the bailouts, the one good thing he did was lower taxes, something Obama can't figure out will help the economy. - Spencer
And he's black. - Derrick
His race has nothing to do with it. Why is it that anyone who disagrees with Obama somehow has some racial motive? - Spencer
Doesn't seem to me that Bush's tax cuts helped the economy at all. - Internet's Tad
Explain what? You said they were diving, yet it never amounts to anything until you pop back up a month later and say they're diving again (or still, I'm really not sure.) It's been your rallying cry since the election bro, seriously, at some point someone's going to notice. - Richard Lawler
Race has *nothing* to do with it? Not even an eentsy, weensty bit? - Derrick
@Derrick Not for me. - Spencer
@Richard Once again, explain his very low poll numbers and strong disapproval rating. - Spencer
OK gotta run, love you guys! :) - Spencer
I pledged myself to the President when I joined the military Spencer (which was Bush at the time, who I didn't always agree with, but I took that pledge seriously) - does that make me a bad person? Is the military a cult? Those who join the military now, pledging their allegiance to Obama as CIC... Are they part of his cult too? I'm confused. Since when has it been a bad thing to pledge... more... - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
If you'll explain to me how they could have been diving nearly a year ago and still diving now. Remember how "the market wasn't responding to porkulus"? LOL. That worked out great for you. - Richard Lawler
Although the link is to WND, the video is on YouTube. And Derrick it's quite impossible to prove your negative: "race has *nothing* to do with it". - Craig Eddy
Just a thought but what about the Pledge that I said in school? - Mathew A. Koeneker
The flag is not one person - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Internet's Tad
My son has to have a permission slip signed to listen to the president's address. :( I'm ashamed to be living in Arizona now. I wonder if he'll get picked on for listening to the speech? Part of me doesn't want him to play with any of the kids whose parents don't sign the slip.
Given from what I've seen on the news, it ain't just Arizona. I can't believe the legs this story has. - Derrick
I think this whole thing means parents have no ability to teach their children reason and debate. Now it's all about shutting up the other side. Would anyone like another Red Scare? Sure, I'll take two so I have an excuse to throw barbs at the other side and call them names. Stupid. - Eric @ CS Techcast from iPod
Yeah, you know my thoughts on it: http://friendfeed.com/bluecoc... - Her Lindsay-ness
It means a lot of parents are (a) stupid to begin with and (b) unwilling to take on the responsibility of "teachable moments" themselves. Or, you know, be a parent. - Spidra Webster
In my younger years, I watched a speech by Reagen, Bush Sr and Clinton while they were in office that was directed towards school kids my age. We didn't hav eto sign anything and the schools made it mandatory :/ - Tsali, The Native of FF
Permission slips for teaching about sex, I get that. Some families and cultures prefer not to have the schools take care of that. But permission to listen to a historical speech? Do we need to start giving permission to learn about WW2 and the genocide? There are halocaust deniers out there. How about learning about Martin Luther King Jr and his I hAve a dream speech? It's race-based,... more... - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
It just bothers me that these are the same people who told us to respect the office of the President, no matter who is occupying it when people were upset about going to war. And it scares me how much HATRED there is for Obama. Issues aside, just the pure hatred and aggression people feel towards Obama is frightening. - Trish R
Maybe I'm just biased, or conditioned to think this way, but when I see all of this Obama backlash, the first thing that pops in my head is: WE DON'T WANT NO BLACK PRESIDENT. - Derrick
Derrick: we don't want THAT black president. If Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell or Walter E. Williams ran, I'd vote for them in a heartbeat. - Craig Eddy
And Craig, if one of them had been elected I'm sure there would be absolute outrage that parents were keeping their children home because that president were making a speech to schools. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It's ridiculous to require a permission slip for this, but I support giving parents the opt-out option. - Craig Eddy
@Tina: it's convenient that you can ascribe racist intentions to every criticism of the President, but that doesn't make it valid. UPDATE: oops, I mis-read your comment, Tina. Sorry. Strike this here, I'll use it in a second tho.... - Craig Eddy
Well Tad, it is not the kids faults that there parents are bigots. - Joe
@J. Deakins: it's convenient that you can ascribe racist intentions to every criticism of the President, but that doesn't make it valid. - Craig Eddy
Opt out? Hope he leads them in the pledge then the parents can opt out of the pledge opt out of respecting the flage opt out of respecting troops in time of war - yeah its 100 days after Bush and we sorta forgot that in time of war with troops on the hostile ground you respect your Commander in Chief - opt out of that - WarLord
Doesn't mean it is invalid either Craig, but please sugar coat it. - Joe
WarLord, Jehovah's Witnesses already do opt out of saying the Pledge of Allegiance. - Rochelle
Some parents prefer to do the critical thinking for their children. Not permitting or opting out of the viewing is a perfect way to let your child know it's not important to form your own opinions or respect the POTUS, but listening blindly to the ideology of your parents is paramount. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
@Pete: I'm sure that would apply to allowing a valedictorian to thank God for their accomplishments too, right? - Craig Eddy
What a good group of crazies to use as an example Rochelle. - Joe
My high school Freshman was bummed he wasn't getting to see it. He wanted the opportunity to "point out all the fallacies". It was a proud moment for me. - Craig Eddy
Yes I'm aware of both Witness and Adventist "Graven Image" views that however is a tiny side issue to the larger one of hyper patriots suddenly deciding that their partisan politics is more important than our troops at war - WarLord
J.Deakins, my point is that there already are groups of Americans who don't recite the Pledge. Although I don't personally agree with their religion, I give them the space and right to practice it. *shrug* - Rochelle
Craig is drinking Cheny's cool aid. - Joe
*blink blink* - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Whatever Rochelle - they are crazy. No need to be PC there. - Joe
No need to be civil either, of course. - Craig Eddy
If the parent wrote the speech for the valedictorian, then yes, Craig. Otherwise, give credit where it's due, God, Allah, Buddha, all the same. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
Civil like Bill O'Rielly? - Joe
or civil like Rush? - Joe
Oh, I didn't realize Bill O'Reilly or Rush were in this conversation. But way to deflect. - Craig Eddy
Examples of GOP civility. - Joe
I seriously doubt many valedictorians need/want their PARENT to write their speech for them, but if makes you feel better to think that, go for it. - Craig Eddy
How civil of you Craig. - Joe
Craig I'm waiting how do you feel about disrespect of Commander in Chief in time of war with our troops in harms way - those permission slips provide aid and comfort to America's enemies - WarLord
I think those men are both entertainers who are paid to generate an audience. - Craig Eddy
I think all the John Birch members will not be allowing their kids to see that speech either. - Joe
Why isn't he going to see it, Craig? Are you not permitting him? Why not give him the opportunity to debate those "fallacies"? I think it's important for children to be able to figure out things for themselves eventually, you are there to guide, not brainwash. Brainwashing leads to backlash and extremism... we all need more moderation and the only way to achieve that is to expose ourselves to conflicting viewpoints and consider them objectively. - Her Lindsay-ness
@Lindsay: It's for K - 6 as far as I know. I would never "shield" him, and we rarely discuss politics. He has formed his opinion through his own reading. - Craig Eddy
J.Deakins: respect for another person's religion is not "PC." It's actually one of the core founding principles of this country. You know what I do think that children should hear speeches from god fearing GOPers - kids need to learn fear, hate, and intolerance - what better place to do it? - Joe
Its been one election and 100 days but suddenly with a change of parties the Office of President and the Commander in Chief is far less deserving of respect. No longer dissent un american or unpatriotic. Partisan politics in time of war with troops in harms way is just a yawn. The hypocrisy of this dramatic and cynical sea change is breathtaking. - WarLord
oh Bren we have a group based on tolerance and mutual respect among those of different backgrounds in FF, many folks you know are in there, you are welcome too. - Joe

OK, I'll be a contrarian here. If this were a "political" speech about foreign policy, health care, or some issue that's a subject of political debate, I'd totally support the need for permissions slips, and I might even give the school board an earful about it... - Ken Sheppardson
... Maybe I'm just being naive, but it never occurred to me that's what the President had in mind. My expectation is that to note the start of the first school year since he took office, he'd offer a "school is important, study hard, listen to your parents, and maybe you can grow up to be President" message. I mean you might disagree with him on politics, but do you really think he's a complete idiot? - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, but don't you realize? That's all part of the illuminati-socialist-fascist plan! If people become educated and stay in school, they might demand government that works for them. The horror. - mikepk
It is hard to fathom how far, how firm and how fast present divisions have taken hold. Confirms for me that ideology overcomes rational thought for many. - Eric Logan

Parents will let their kids listen to pro football players and pro basketball players, rappers and celebrities ... and yet they won't let them listen to the President for fear of "ideology". Rational thought has obviously been lost in the process here. People are getting way too bent out of shape over this. - Allan Besselink
"President George H.W. Bush delivered a nationally televised speech to students from a Washington school in fall 1991, encouraging them to say no to drugs and work hard." -- http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn... - Ken Sheppardson
"In November 1988, President Reagan delivered more politically charged remarks that were made available to students nationwide. Among other things, Reagan called taxes "such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper ... because they have to give so much to the government." -- http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn... - Ken Sheppardson

Many parents who's kids won't seeing the speech will be watching the new Sarah Palin/Michelle Bachman TV show : "Crazy Talk" - Joe
I get annoyed at the bogeyman of the evil all-controlling Government (capital G). If we strive to the heights of our own ideals then we, the people, should *be* the government. You know, that government of the people, by the people, for the people, that shall not perish from the earth. All that stuff? By framing every debate as "regular folk" vs "The Government" you're essentially saying democracy is a failed experiment. - mikepk
There's a different set of rules for this POTUS let's be real here. - Michelle
I thought it was for grades K-6, too, but my son said they're seeing it in high school (for the ones who have permission, of course). - Trish R
You know what, George H.W. Bush attended by High School graduation. I wasn't a fan of Bush but I was still pleased and honored to have the President at my graduation and proudly shook his hand when I got my diploma. How can you become educated about a person's idealogical and political beliefs if you refuse to listen to what they have to say? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I don't think I'm being paranoid, xenophobic, or exhibiting low self esteem to say that I don't want classroom time taken up by political messages, unless I'm sure there's going to be a teacher there who can frame it as that after it's been presented and offer context and explain that there are alternative views. In the context of a Political Science class, fine, but as part of just some general assembly where the kids immediately head off to gym class after, no thanks. - Ken Sheppardson
And I now have in my head Reagan's 1988 message that included the comment that "taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper ... because they have to give so much to the government" not any sort of hypothetical Obama speech. [That comment was in response to a Q from a student, not part of the prepared/approved address, BTW] - Ken Sheppardson
I will be sharing this speech with children in India, it has universal appeal - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Last school year, my son was in his English class, and the election came up. Many people spoke up with hate messages about Obama. My son spoke up in support of Obama and asked them why they hate him so much. The teacher asked my son, "How many states are there in the U.S.?" My son said "50." The teacher said, "Then you're smarter than Obama." So how is that not a political message in a... more... - Trish R
Yes, Trish, the teacher was wrong. But, since we have yet to actually see/hear the speech, how can we know what the content may be? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Ken: Come on! They're over at someone's house and they hear something and there's no one to provide context. Or in the mall or ... anywhere. And why is it the job of the teacher to 'frame it'? I usually agree with you but here ... we're coddling children and parents WAY too much. The line of thought here is that nothing that is of any intellectual debate should be presented in school - that MAAD should be shouted down because I really think we should be talking about smoking instead. - AJ Kohn
This is political posturing with kids as the pawns - it's that simple. One teacher over a single year will have 1000x more opportunity to influence a child's thinking counter to how the parent is trying to influence he/she. Some people home school for this reason, but that's not applicable in this situation since we're talking about a public school here. PUBLIC <--- hmm, important word here. - Micah Wittman
Sorry, AJ... for a second there I was imagining we had a school system that actually teaches kids critical thinking skills and has a different set of standards than the mall or my neighbors' basement. I forgot. Nevermind. ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
Seems like to me, people don't want their children to hear messages from the president only when they views differ from their own. I can't ever recollect such vitriol when the president was going to talk to kids (wasn't GWB talking to school kids during the 9/11 attacks?). What makes it so different now? Obama is the FIRST PREZ to ever talk to kids, ZOMG!?! - Derrick

To anyone who feels like it's necessary to see the speech before you approve your child watching it: Would you have demanded to read the speech beforehand of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush or George W Bush before allowing your child to sit in a classroom and watch? - Trish R

I had to sign a permission slip for sex ed. A political gimmick (as some perceive) might justify a permission slip. I couldn't imagine telling my child's school that my child couldn't attend the broadcast. That's especially a bad idea if you really believe it's just a dogmatic political engagement. It's a great opportunity to learn, regardless of your political affiliation and especially so if it's controversial and politically charged. Sounds like fun :) - Jason Nunnelley
If I was a student and my parent did sign the permission form for me or my teacher or school opted out of the broadcast, I would ditch school to find a way to watch it. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone

Cecily, I don't get your point. You dissented. Some people choose to dissent today. Were you not paying attention to all the people who hated Reagan in the 80s? Do you think Republicans and folks concerned about Obama's cult of personality originated the idea of opting out? This is a direct result of all the free thinking from Republican administrations and more conservative times - kids suing schools because a coach prayed before a football game. - Jason Nunnelley
My point, Jason, is that nobody was all up in arms when the Reagans attended my school. Nobody cried indoctrination then when, let's be honest, that whole "Just Say No!" movement was all about indoctrination. It's hypocrisy of the highest order. My point is that there is a double standard being applied to this president that has not been applied to past presidents, and I, for one, am no longer believing any soft-pedaled excuses about 'socialism' or 'indoctrination' or any of that bull. - cecily
Cicily, if you're saying it was OK for you to dissent but not OK for today's youth (or their parents) to dissent then I'm afraid that's hypocrisy. Conservatives keeping their mouths shut when the "Just say no," campaign was going on (with which they agreed) and freaking out over the "What are you going to do for Obama?" campaign is consistent with their own personal views. It's no more hypocritical than you voting for the person you want to win. - Jason Nunnelley
With all due respect, Jason - I call bullshit. And it's OK for you to believe what you want to believe, but I call 100% grade-a bovine scatulation. - cecily
It's just as silly for you to deny someone's feelings about big socialist government as it is for someone to say you only like Obama because he's black. You're both equally guilty of dehumanizing the conversation. It's not productive. So long as you like conflict, that's cool. You're feeding a fire of hate, but that's your choice. - Jason Nunnelley
Miss Elle, then I call bovine waste. It's untrue. Where have you been the last 8 years. When did the left show respect for the office of the presidency? That's either completely blind or dishonest. - Jason Nunnelley
If my daughter doesn't get to hear the speech or I see a permission slip come from the school, I may have to homeschool her. Where have you guys been? How did you miss all the nasty, vile rhetoric about Bush? Can't you guys just admit that you're political idealists that have no patience for the messages you don't like and accept that the guys on the other side are the same? Do you have to pretend it's about race or some other silliness? Even the left and right in DC manage to get together and have a beer afterward. Look at the Republicans that bemoaned Ted Kennedy's death. Buying into this whole hate stuff is for suckers. - Jason Nunnelley
Word of mouth sure called little-Bush several levels of idiot. However, never once was there any nationwide attempt to make schools require permission slips when showing Bush to schoolchildren. This is about the permission slips, not about what is said at home. - Miss Elle
Miss Elle: new tactic, old game. Never before did anyone use social media, direct advertising, cell phones, etc. as successfully as the 08' Obama campaign. Look, these are separate issues. One is the legitimate concerns of parents (right or wrong). The other issue is Republican tactics (which are sleazy). Calling everyone that's caught in the snare a bigot or evil is a bad idea. Cecily, your'e wrong. They burned him in effigy, held mock trials, crapped on the flag. If you judge anyone that disagrees with you by the most extreme examples, then you're painting with an unfairly broad brush. As for the guy with the gun, he didn't shoot anyone and broke no law. I'd bet there's 10 or so guns strapped to someone at nearly every Republican meeting in my home town,... more... - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason -- But permission slips? As a schoolteacher, and an independent voter, I was totally behind the "keep your kiddo home" thing. That seemed to be more of an individual choice. Permission slips is messing too much with education, methinks. (It should be noted that my school isn't showing the speech though I think some of my beloved knuckleheaded kiddos could benefit from a strong stay-in-school message.) - Miss Elle
Your son needs a permission slip to listen to the President's address? What is going on in this country? What has happened to the right? - PC Easy from twhirl

For the record, carrying an AR-15 (AKA Assault Rifle) to a rally is a very bad idea. People shouldn't do it. But, to a gun carrier (and anyone who carries a gun is going to carried a loaded gun - cause an empty gun does one no good) this is an exercise of liberty. I disagree with that decision, just like the people that want to keep their kids home when Obama speaks. But, it doesn't mean they want to murder people. - Jason Nunnelley

Holden, there's no other rational reason to explain the reaction that parents are having to this event. - Alex Scoble
In all honesty, I just don't see how the things going on surrounding President Obama are not related to race. Take everything as a whole and it just doesn't make sense. Race seems to be the missing piece that makes it all fit together. Obviously, some people have actual grievances with Obama (even though he hasn't actually done anything yet), but nothing else explains the retarded stuff going on right now. (Funny, Alex and I agree for the same reason) - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Trish: You asked "To anyone who feels like it's necessary to see the speech before you approve your child watching it: Would you have demanded to read the speech beforehand of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush or George W Bush before allowing your child to sit in a classroom and watch?".... Jason - carrying an AR-15 to a rally is an "exercise of liberty"? Can people start exercising some responsibility? Once again, another prime example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should". I am really starting to wonder what drives people anymore. Apparently people are more driven by party-politics-babble than they are by thinking. Nobody made this big of an issue about any of the aforementioned presidents, Republican or otherwise. This is just plain stupid. - Allan Besselink
Hey, wingnuts! Maybe you guys want to try reading the speech before you freak out: http://friendfeed.com/us-poli... - Steven Perez
I read the speech. I concur with POTUS! Stay in school. Be responsible for your future. Learn all that you can. Show up. All seem pretty sensible ideas to me. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew, yeah but it's kind of sad (to me at least) that the POTUS has to say this kind of stuff to the kids today... shouldn't parents be passing on those types of things to their kids already? - Chris Heath
I agree that it seems as if many parents have given up the idea of being the role model for their children. Another argument entirely. I applaud the fact that POTUS is being forward thinking. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Allan Besselink, if you're talking to me you didn't actually read my post/comment. And, Scott, if an AR-15 is too much fire power for an individual, then so is any hunting rifle. A .223 is no more powerful a firearm than anything you'd use to shoot a deer, elk or wild boar. This is simply a pro-gun vs. anti-gun issue. You either think guns are evil and should be banned or you believe in the right to keep and bare arms. Some people believe in the right to keep and bare arms. - Jason Nunnelley
Why would you need a gun at a rally? Simple question. Simple answer? - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Scott, does that limit end at my front door? People carry guns concealed in my state - I can carry a gun practically anywhere, especially in public spaces. You just don't know I'm carrying. Like I already said, I'd never carry a gun to a rally because it's a bad idea. I think that is a mistake. But, to a person that carries a gun everywhere else, it's not a hostile act. - Jason Nunnelley
Coach Rahsheen, I usually keep a license to conceal carry. And, I never feel the need to carry a gun anywhere. I most often carry in transport to shoot for fun. I like guns. They're fun. I would never carry to a rally. It's a bad idea. - Jason Nunnelley
Come on, Jason. Are you serious? I could see if you're just carrying concealed all the time just because that's what you do. I don't have a problem with that. Carrying a rifle to a rally when you have said you want the president dead can only be seen as an act of aggression. I don't care if people carry guns, but people are definitely abusing their right to bear arms just recently. - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
WRT I do not understand why it's supposed to be OK to bring guns to rallies for *THIS* presidents term but it's never been before. Mind you I grew up in Alaska. I am no stranger to guns and I love that people can use them to shoot the moose that make tasty jerky (dear anybody in alaska, please send moose jerky). I also think that people should have the right to keep a gun in *most*... more... - EricaJoy from IM
Jason, your words: "But, to a gun carrier (and anyone who carries a gun is going to carried a loaded gun - cause an empty gun does one no good) this is an exercise of liberty." That wasn't hard to read. "Responsibility" goes with rights - guns or otherwise. I agree with Coach - where's the need, "rights" or otherwise? People are too quick to jump all over having the "rights" but fail to... more... - Allan Besselink
Erica - yes, I think we have what people have, in history, called a "double standard". I fear we are now discovering the deep dark underbelly of the populace, more so than ever before. - Allan Besselink
Yes, Allan. I already said that. Scott, this whole notion of an "assault rifle" is silly. I can kill a person just as effectively with a "deer gun," as an "assault rifle." It's a designation based on how the gun looks - it's practically meaningless. I realize that antigun people don't understand that an assault gun and a hunting gun are the same thing. I also realize that antigun are... more... - Jason Nunnelley
It's not a designation based on the looks of the gun, although that's how the assault gun ban was written. An assault gun is different from other types of firearms in a few important areas and must meet more than a few of these criteria. It must fire a high speed projectile, have a high capacity magazine, be easily configured for auto or multi-round fire and have a rifled barrel (be fairly accurate up to 400 meters. That's what makes it different from a hunting rifle. - Alex Scoble
And yep, a well trained crazy with a bolt action M14 sniper rifle is much more dangerous to the public than a crazy with an assault rifle, if they are in the right place, such as a clock tower. - Alex Scoble
Don't understand exactly how gun rights belong in this debate. I personally don't have to look any further than Iran and June 2009 to realize that the right to bear arms are vitally important in a free country. - Eric Logan
Thread drift or no thread drift - it's still inane to require a permission slip to listen to the President. - Allan Besselink
I agree, Allan and us much as I hate it the visibility of an underbelly also seems apt. Hopefully, its exposure provides a cathartic opportunity at some point in the future. - Eric Logan
"Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide." <-- I could really have used hearing that as a kid. - Alix Whitmire
Anyone who would not allow their children to hear that speech should be ashamed of themselves. Period. - Joe
You know, I keep trying to tell folks (in two separate threads) that dismissing the fear some express as political duplicity ignores a growing sentiment in this country. Most of the rabid anti-Obama were also people who thought the Bush administration was drifting toward fascism. There is a strong thread of thinking in this country that our government is being pushed to a dangerous end by both parties. It's not fake emotion. And, it's not shrinking. - Jason Nunnelley
Jason, that might be the sentiment where you live, but where I live the anti-Obama people were almost all very avid supports of the previous administration. VERY. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Jason, you may have a point there about growing anti-government attitudes (on some issues) across parties (that's worth several threads thread in itself), but it's the rabid anything that's misplaced, and to fear something so straightforward as this speech is just silly, if not either (or both) pure partisanship or veiled racism. - LogEx
Tina, LogEx: I've said this a dozen times - but I happen to have zero problem with the President's speech. But, I think it's a bad idea to ignore the real emotion behind the success of the campaign to trump up concern over Obama's address. I also think it's a terribly dismissive and ignorant statement to call anyone that has concerns over the speech a racist. Reactionary? Sure. Racist? No. Its not about race. It's about socialist vs. free market. Most people don't care what race Obama is or isn't. - Jason Nunnelley
It might be simplistic to reduce it to race, but I can't help but consider that a factor. That's not to say that the other things aren't, but there's too much divide, too many people not willing to talk about it, too much history in regards to race in this country to say that it's NOT a detail. EDIT: But then again, I'm a black man in America, so that's my bias. - Derrick
There are two factors here: tabloid political spin doctors and legitimate political dissenters. Neither are driven by race. The political spin doctors are responsible for nutty stuff like Palin claiming Letterman suggested someone rape her daughter. That's insane, and I'm pretty sure she knew it when she said so. Likewise, there was a single line in the original speech that's been blown... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I've never said anyone called anyone a racist, or that the people involved are racists. I reiterate, things involving race can be racial without the people involved being racists. Big difference. - Derrick
Derrick, go to a Republican rally and say you're for lowering taxes, reducing federal spending and reducing the amount of involvement the government has in people's lives. You can be as black as coal, they'll embrace you. Get some lily white guy to go to the same group and say he's for universal healthcare, more taxes and tell them you think people shouldn't be allowed to say things... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Jason, I would say that most of these people don't understand what socialism or free markets are. Most of what I've seen is spouting extremist talking points that have no basis in fact. - LogEx
Black as coal? - Derrick
LogEx, yes. We totally agree. But, I'm trying to suggest the whole walk a mile in the crazy guy's shoes line. Just because someone's views aren't completely logical or well thought out doesn't mean they're lying about their motivation. If you empathize with people you can change their hearts and minds. If you dismiss them, you'll get nowhere. - Jason Nunnelley
Derrick, is that an offensive term? It wasn't meant to be nuanced. I'm just pointing out that a man's color doesn't matter as much as his ideology. You think all these right wing folks would embrace Hillary Clinton? - Jason Nunnelley
Not at all but they wouldn't be implying threats of assassination so brazenly either. :) - EricaJoy from IM
What I'm saying, and I'm not discounting ideology, as someone who thinks that gays should be able to get married, that those who have should help out those who have not, we should be more inclusive, and we had no business in Iraq, etc., I clearly differ from those who are more conservative. I'm also someone who is forced to never, never, never forget that he is black. I'm certainly... more... - Derrick
+10 Derrick - Joe
Derrick, I can't understand but I do empathize that being a minority is a particular burden in today's culture. I remember dealing harshly with a great guy in business a long time back and he decided it was because he was black. It had nothing to do with that. I got stuck between a rock and a hard place and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was about money, not race.... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I think that's the point I'm trying to make, Jason. Things in this country have conditioned people of color to be consumed with race, and people who aren't minorities rarely give it a second thought. Until both groups understand this, there will always be some gulf. - Derrick
Derrick, I realize that. Let me tell you (for personal peace and understanding) that most white people are judging you for your education, performance, manner of speech, and a whole host of other things. Your race isn't in the top five, likely not in the top ten. If they mess you over it's because that's what white people do. There is an ethnic European culture, and part of it is race... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I understand that Jason, and realize that in a perfect world, that wouldn't be a factor. But, by the same token, race neutrality can backfire. I *am* black. I have had experiences as a black person in this country that have added to how and why I do things. To cut *that* out and ignore it completely is just as bad, in my experience, as it is to be a blatant racist. Resumes can only tell a person so much; you still have to conduct an interview. - Derrick
Derrick, just keep in mind that as a white man I can't possibly understand where you're coming from. It's always going to be alien. You say "I am black," and I say "so what?" I can only recognize the effect that status has as an intellectual exercise. I've never dealt with you based on race, just like I've never dealt with anyone based on race. So, it's much more relevant to me that we... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Which is my point. I can't just erase it from the factors of which I live by. Racism is a plague and I think we can both agree on that, but for me to reduce racial matters, that of my livelihood, to something like snake handlers in the mountains of Tennessee isn't something I just can just...do. But I hear you, and I am grateful for the dialogue. - Derrick
Derrick, I can recognize intellectually that it effects you personally. I realize that there are still a lot of racists out there. But, for you to deal with me based on what some racist did to you is like my wife dealing with me based on what some guy she dated in high school did. I realize it happens, but it's completely disconnected. Rahsheen's assertion that if I don't like Obama... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Derrick, BTW - my frustration is with Rahsheen's comments and not your comments. You're sounding pretty logical. Rahsheen's assertion that if I dislike Obama's politics I've got to be a bigot is infuriating. I'm not even so much arguing for me. I'm not really a big anti-Obama guy. I have a tad less frustration with Obama than I did with Bush. But, I just can't assign all political beliefs to race. It's too simplistic. - Jason Nunnelley
I can't speak for Rahsheen, and I'll say it again, things can be racial without being racist. I don't know why someone called you a bigot; I didn't call you one. - Derrick

I didn't call anyone anything. Just for the record. - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
+1 Rick. And to think this all started with the issue of a permission slip being signed. No wonder people in other countries look at all of this and say "WTF?". - Allan Besselink
@Craig Eddy: Thanks for pointing out that link. - Kittyburgers
Coach Rahsheen, I perceived your statements (in the other thread) to be quite knee-jerk, assumptive. You've clarified that you were only talking about "some," though I'm not sure how one falls into this category. I'd consider the number of people that dislike Obama's policies because of race to be a tiny number compared to those that take issue w/ his policies. - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason Nunnelley: I don't think any reasonable individual would disagree with that. The race issue would most likely be minimal. - Kittyburgers
Kittyburgers, unfortunately I think otherwise rational people do disagree with me. It's a personal experience I can't understand - nobody that has lived a life without the experience unique to people of color can really understand it. We can only recognize unique experiences and viewpoints we don't understand. To me (likely you too), race just isn't a big deal. To someone that has their... more... - Jason Nunnelley
You try to correct the viewpoint of someone who, as you've said, can only have an experience you haven't had? That's mighty wh.... nah, I'm not going to say it. - cecily
White of me? - Jason Nunnelley
I think injecting race where it doesn't already exist is a counterproductive viewpoint. I understand why it may develop in one's psyche. I don't understand it. But, I accept that people who tell me about this feeling are honest and telling me their sincere feelings. As we develop a deeper understanding of each other I'd like to think we develop a more correct interpretation of others' beliefs, even if we disagree with them. The question is, is there hope? - Jason Nunnelley
Sad + Pathetic!!!!!! + this is AMERICA!!??? WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!!! I can't believe this Garbage is Happening in America of all places* It's a Bloody Disgrace!! Good Riddance to Bush + Brainwashed Flock NeoCon Taliban-like Religious Zealot MORONS!!! - Billy Warhol
I'm late to this, but I have to say it's far more stinky where Jason sits than where Cecily sits. Jason, you seem to ignore the fact that Cecily's school was going to force each family to document why each child didn't show up for the Reagans, while the schools of this day were forcing parents and children to provide documentation to hear Obama speak. Dissert was not permitted for Reagan. Dissent was the default for Obama. Pure, udder (spelling deliberate) fecal matter. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Ours (in conservative O.C., CA) was opt out - if you *didn't* want them to watch, you had to sign and return a slip. - Denise Howell

I have a love/hate relationship with the new Facebook iPhone App... Anyone else feel this way?
why? - Sean Oliver
I mean, why take features that worked away? I spent a good amount of time on my friend groups... Let me access them. Also why make it so difficult to get to the notifactions... Favorite plz. Unless I'm missing something. - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
I like that I now have access to pages, photos, phone numbers, events and such albeit with a few glitches like photo streams being blank when u click on a notification. Stabiltiy seems to have improved nicely too. What about others? My longshot wish would be event creation/management... - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
I really like the new iPhone app. But I am using from an iPod touch so I can really only use the basic features. I do agree about the notifications however - it took me a little bit to work out where they were! But overall I think its a huge improvement .... now I just have to get an iPhone!!!!! - Martin Press
Mine is more like a love, wanna-hug-it, finally-care-about-using-Facebook relationship. - David Chartier
I still think that the BB version beats it-Comparing between my iPod Touch and my bberry, it is more integrated, and having it sync with my calendar and contacts is very nice - Mitchell Hislop
Walt, the friend lists you create can be used to filter the newsfeed (button top right) but you can't manipulate those lists at present unfortunately. - Franz Sittampalam
OMG Franz... I didn't even know they were there... Thank-You! As for manipulation, if they just allowed me to place a person in a list when I accepted their request via the app, I'd be fine with that. ;) - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Liking it fine in general, but noticed that you can't comment on (or read comments on) a Note. - Virante
Walt, no probs! I had trouble finding this feature too, I wonder how many people are making use of friend lists? - Franz Sittampalam
I was broken in by Friendfeed with that... ;) but I know I have explained them many times to others. They are the key to privacy and give u the added bonus of filtering your news. - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
I need to be able to HIDE, HIDE and more HIDE things... - Vince DeGeorge
Vince, hiding would be welcomed by me as well. For now I get by using the full web interface to hide what I want then the app usage is much nicer. Just a pain to need to do both... - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Rene Wirtz
Beck is ready to go postal, he has lost his mind; he "knows" the "fact" that NBC is broadcasting from a socialist, fascist, communist building decorated with all the "red" symbols, but he doesn't realize that his own studio is in the same Rockefeller Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch... ..

It is official, Glenn Beck has proven to be dumber than a sack of hair and has thereby proves that his viever base is just as smart. Anyone who ever takes anything from the Glenn Beck show as fact disqualifies himself from any debate by default. And here is Olbermann's parody: http://www.politicususa.com/en... - Rene Wirtz
This is all getting to be too much. - Anika
What is this parallel reality that's going on here right now? I'm really not getting it at all. - Kamilah Gill
No-one gets it, except for Beck and his absurd brain. - Rene Wirtz
I swear...he's gonna snap. He's at the breaking point with his paranoid ramblings that are getting more and more incoherent and absurd on national television. The paranoia is probably even higher now with the "rumor" satire gone viral... I will not be the least surprised if he takes an AK to work and starts shooting people. - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
and then the lunatics will claim he was assassinated and make him a martyr. - Joe Silence is not dead
It's an affront that the Fox Corporation keeps him on the air, it shows the true bias of Rupert Murdoch. All advertizers on the Beck Show should also fully extract themselves from Fox and show Murdoch and his jingoist henchmen the finer points of capitalism. - Rene Wirtz
Oh definitely - I suspect Murdoch is perfectly content with what Beck is doing - because he knows that no matter how crazy, Beck has a loyal following. Also, I doubt the larger companies like Wally World et al will pull their funding from Fox News Affiliates, because the execs at the top happen to share Murdoch's views. - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
Maybe the IRS should look more closely at Murdoch's zero tax status. - Rene Wirtz
Seriously, the guy is insane. - Alejandro
Anybody see "Point of Order" cinema verite documentary about the Army McCarthy Hearing. Beck is reminding me of the Joe Mccarthy breakdown in that film - WarLord
@WarLord: Interesting that you mention McCarthy, for a while now I have been thinking that what fringe wingers are doing at the moment resembles McCarthy's witch hunt. And the instigators are using the same words to instill fear. - Rene Wirtz
LOL - I've been cringing about McCarthyism for a LONG time now, though I didn't "label" it with McCarthy b.s. until July of last year in poetic form: (http://prosepetals.deviantart.com/art...) - though I had hinted at it also in poetic form back in 2004 (the original date of this writing http://www.storm-artists.net/full... submitted to dA in 2004,... more... - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
I give it two weeks before he starts waving a "list" in the air. - teh Dork Knight
Oh, I'm sure he is desperate to share his list of all the socialist, fascist, communist people who are pushing America down the drain. And yet there are people who believe Beck is *not* trying to get the president killed. How many more times must he call Obama a socialist, fascist, communist, while encouraging his flock to bring guns to town hall meetings. - Rene Wirtz
Denise: I guess every movement needs their "poster boy." Someone needs to add Glen Beck to the McCarthyism wikipedia entry and take a screenshot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... LoL - Bryan Lee
@Bryan: the picture that Olbermann uses would be nice *grin* - Rene Wirtz
@Rene: This picture would work too http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_apuuyw... or maybe this one too http://www.foxnews.com/images... - Bryan Lee
@RENE: What really bothered me was Beck flat-out calling him a tyrant. (not in this clip, in earlier clips) According the our Declaration of Independence there's only one remedy for that: overthrow. - teh Dork Knight
@tehKenny: I know! And still there are people that say he isn't inciting hate and violence. I think these shit-for-brains will only truly see it when Obama gets assassinated. Then, of course, they will deny everything and try to spin it so that they are definitely not the blame, because they were always against violence. The ignorance and the blindness of the fringe right is baffling, stunning and amazing. - Rene Wirtz
@Bryan: he wears that hat well *LOL* - Rene Wirtz
@Rene: he does indeed :) - Bryan Lee
@Brian: I still like this one: http://s3.mediamatters.org/static... - his expressions says everything you need to know :P - Rene Wirtz
What is his deal? All that same stuff has been there since Bush, and Clinton, and Regan, and Ford, and Carter, and....... Why is it just now something supporting Obama? Were people (most of which who are already dead and who made these things before Obama was born) part of some art conspiracy to brainwash us in 2009? WTF? - Her Lindsay-ness
@Lindsay: That is exactly the point Beck was making, kinda ludicrous. And Olbermann hacked into it with a blunt axe, not a scalpel. - Rene Wirtz
@Bryan: LOL! Beck's "O-Face" cracks me up! @Lindsey - the level of absurdity that the anti-Obama theories have reached is of *EPIC* proportions. There are those on the evangelical right who believe that Obama is (literally) the anti-christ, and they are tied in nicely with the birthers who believe that Obama's very *birth* was part of some vast left-wing plot to bring "communism" to the... more... - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
Dave, at one point I would have agreed that race was not a factor, except for that last point you mention. Obama is *NOT* liberal. He's a moderate (and in the ways that he's moderate are where I hold some of my heaviest criticism, even while I understand why he's "staying above the fray"). What you & I are calling the radical right (Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, etc) - have become the voice... more... - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
Particularly since, only 9 short months into Obama's first term, the whitewashing of the Bush administration is fully under way. - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
Wow just wow, how can a nut job like this have a program on a national TV station? He belongs in his own "space" on youtube where no one will "hear him scream" - Rasmus Lauridsen
LOL Rasmus - how about on Planet Cheney? ;) - ProsePetals (aka Denise)
Beck has to know he's a total goof. I think he positions himself as an "entertainer" - somewhat of an extreme polar opposite of John Stewart. Unfortunately his audience is influenced easily (hint: they're not very smart and *need* people to tell them what to think), so they take all this as "truth". I'd love to just laugh and laugh with him, but I truly believe that he's dangerous because of his lunatic fringe (2nd amendment loving) followers. - Vince DeGeorge

Kate Moss With and Without Make-up & Perfect Lighting & Photoshop | Fugggllee
"I’ve been asked by many of you to do this, so here you all go: On the left, Kate Moss on her free time, natural and make-up less. On the right, Kate on the cover of W Magazine, with the perfect make-up on, styling, in the perfect light and helped by Photoshop. This “magazine Kate” seems to have everything… just no wrinkles. I think Kate is a great model, she is beautiful and she has a great bone structure…. but I just wish the difference between daily Kate and cover-girl Kate wouldn’t be as big, because the second picture sets unrealistic & false standards for the regular 35 year-old woman (Kate’s age). Here’s the rest of the shoot:" - sofarsoShawn

are we sure the one on the left is not Kate's mom ? - hikmet
She is photographed constantly on the street and that is the worst picture I've ever seen. BAD moment or something done to pic? - R1CC1
the quality of light alone on a single subject could create that effect. - anna sauce
i agree one bad photo does make it questionable, but doing an image search of her from dlisted gets you some fuuuuuuuunnnnneeeeeee stuff! http://images.google.ca/images... especially this one: http://www.dlisted.com/files... LOL & this one http://www.dlisted.com/node... - sofarsoShawn
Oh Jeez! Agreed there are some reaaallly bad pics HaHa. I am thankful no one follows me day and night with a camera!! Can you imagine having all that sh*t out there? - R1CC1
