I have tons of burner friends, but I've never felt compelled to go. I won't bore you with the list of reasons it fails to interest me. I really enjoy checking out flickr just afterwards though. I've also enjoyed seeing how burner culture is slowly being integrated into mainstream Bay Area life. You can't go to a geeky gathering like Maker's Faire or Yuri's Night without getting a taste of it. Kids and families like (some of) burner culture too. I like it when it's closer to home. - Jason Wehmhoener
I stay in SF for all the empty bars and restaurants! - Veronica
No. I support limitations on carbon emissions. - shelisrael1
On the subject of carbon emissions, I totally agree. I was more than a little horrified by the video my friend showed me of "Crude Awakening" when he returned. That shit is just plain stupid, excuse my french. - Jason Wehmhoener
Thomas: A big set of Burning Man photos from you one of these days would be awesome! It'd be a great addition on your journey to the million. - Vincent X
No. I can't plan far enough ahead and by the time it rolls around it's just too late. - Kevin Fox
Crude Awakening's total carbon footprint was the equivalent of half a gallon of gas per participant. If you're that concerned about carbon, you shouldn't travel by car anywhere, ever, for anything. Burning Man *looks* extravagantly wasteful of fossil fuel, but the fuel burned simply getting to the event (or any such event) dwarfs all the pyrotechnics. It's kind of ridiculous to go to, say, SxSW, but not to Burning Man, based on ecological consciousness. - ⓞnor
sorry nor, but that argument pretty much falls flat for me. BTW, I drive very little. - Jason Wehmhoener
back in the early days I was thinking about going but I heard that you had to get your camera registered and that it seemed like such a pain in the ass to get approval to shoot it. I've heard it's lightened up since then though with regards to photography and SLRs. - Thomas Hawk
One of my buddies always brings his SLR. I live vicariously through him, heh. - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason: If you basically never drive anywhere, and wouldn't consider going to any sort of recreational gathering that requires travel, then that's commendably conservative of you. But that's nothing specific to Burning Man - you would have to give the same answer to the question of whether you go to any other event (SxSW, PAX, E3, Woodstock, AAAS, whatever your thing might be). - ⓞnor
Sounds interesting, now that those who are "too cool" dis it.... - Wilma Stoneflint
No thanks. A) I'm a family guy B) Burning Man might have been cool once but seems to be the workaholic answer to a vacation - least the folks I know who have gone seem to fit this mold. 'Work hard, play hard' type people - not my kind of crowd. - AJ Kohn
Aww, so timely, it's our 4th wedding anniversary today. This is the song we played at our reception when our flower girls & ring bearer were announced at their entrance to the reception. Thanks for posting a good memory for me :) - TheMacMommy via twhirl
As a Vista user, I find that Mac users are a little smug. Can't even try "go to the dark side" to even touvh a PC. - Kevin Porter via twhirl
I've always believed that Vista users are as wrong as Mac users are right. Wait a second... ;) - felix
Well look, if everyone keeps saying that Vista is buggy, slow, and a memory hog, wouldn't you be defensive too? - Morton Fox
both attitudes are earned by the underlying software ;) - Michael Markman
I love my Mac. I love my Vista Media Center PC. Both are great! I think a lot of the Mac vs. PC drama stuff is just that, drama. I saw MSFT employees using Macs last week up at Microsoft -- no biggie. I think Vista is a huge improvement for the PC. It is far, far, more stable than my old XP setup that I had previously. I think much of the drama is developed by Apple as a marketing strategy more than anything based on previous problems with Windows stability back on XP and other earlier versions. - Thomas Hawk
I use Vista *and* a Mac, what does that make me? - Eric
To be honest tho -- yeah we might be defensive -- but only because everyone is all over Vista for being crappy when it's not. It's alot of bad hype -- lots of ppl think it's great and works just fine -- including me - Shey
I'm a fanatical Apple fanboy. But that's because Windows and me had a very long and very rocky relationship. That's as much mine as Windows' fault. Everyone to his or her own I say. As long as you can get the job done. In the end a computer is just a black box between you and your product. - Henk de Kruyff via twhirl
I don't care for Vista or what their users think. I just want my chocolate. - Bwana McCall
Lets face it, the Mac vs PC argument is mostly subjective at this point. The hardware is now the same. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Both are fairly stable. Both have a similar UI. It all boils down to preference and what you are used to using. I can only think of a very few reasons to prefer one over the other, and they are based on software availability on on platform vs the other. - Jeff P. Henderson
Thomas, I know you have written about your XP stability problems in the past. My experience is the complete opposite. I have 3 desktops and a laptop running XP. I can't remember the last time I had a blue screen on any of them. I've had no networking problems. I only reboot the desktops about once a month or so to install a windows update. I'm in no hurry to upgrade to Vista primarily because I'm happy with XP as is. Haven't delved into the media center stuff yet. I may want to try Vista when I do. - Jeff P. Henderson
I'm nice and cozy with my XP. And I like to keep it that way. - Shawn
What are you talking about? as a Linux user I don't need to be.. to be.. to... .. . oh, OSses are just tools, we just have to use them. But are them useables? ok, ok, taking cover ;-)) - Thierry R. Andriamirado
I second that Linux users have to be defensive AND smug. As for Vista users, I haven't found many, so I can't say. - possible248
But I haven't had *that* many problems with my Vista computer! - Sarah Perez
Love the one you're with - Vista, Mac, OpenSuSE - they're just tools, it's what you do with them. - Victor Ryden
We're not smug! PC users are just insecure ;) - Veronica
Don't get me started on those Prius owners either :D - Mo Kargas
The people that drove like assholes in there Mercedes are now driving like assholes in their Prius. - Victor Ryden
I just purchased my first Mac about three weeks ago. I've been a loyal Windows user since Windows 3.0. However, there are two operating systems that have missed the mark in a MAJOR way. The first being Windows ME; the second Windows Vista. I still use this OS, but I dislike it. I'm now in love with my Mac and my iPhone. MSFT will bounce back...we always do ;) - Ryan
There's no telling what kind of mixed-up nut I am, since I run Vista ON my Mac! I haven't leaped to Leopard, yet, because I had Application Enhancer (of the OSX BSoD fame), and also I'd not like to drive an hour and a half to an unfamiliar city if my keyboard stopped working properly. Shipping the MB back to Apple is not at all an option. - MiniMage via NoiseRiver
I believe there's a correct pronunciation: put the accent on the first syllable and to pronounce it as one short word, like "ITZit" - nathan
and the 'z' is a liiiiitle silent. are these only available in SF?? i JUST started eating them again - Mona N
When I was a kid in Maine they had a place that made the cookies fresh, the ice cream, and the fudge, and you made your choices and they made the thing for you right there. They were called Harbor Bars (it was Bar Harbor, so that's kinda clever, ey?) - Anthony Citrano
You absolutely want one. Pete's on it -- the mint ones rock. Be prepared, the mint's blue, not green. ;) And Nathan's got the pronunciation down: One word, emphasis on the first syllable. "ITsit." - Kevin Hessel
one of my favorite food sites (serious eats) just did a special on ice cream sandwiches. lemme find the link, brb... back: http://newyork.seriouseats.com... - Mona N
El Farolito sounds great! Next time I'm in SF I'm planning on going on a great quest to experience for myself the legendary San Francisco burritos. Can't wait! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S... - Vincent X
yelp.com... but take it with a grain of salt ;) - Mona N
My grandmother used to tell us about buying these from the original inventor in Golden Gate park when she was young. They are still yummy after all of theses years. - Jeff P. Henderson
2.0 is definitely flaky / unstable - apps crash more often, more spontaneous reboots, more freezeups etc. - Apple have supposedly got an update coming soon - can't be soon enough - Patrick Jordan
Once mine starts stalling, it's only a few minutes away from an auto-reboot. 30min-1hr of constant use in multiple apps will bring about a reboot. - nicerobot
It's definitely more sluggish and less stable than 1.1.4. The price we pay for more choice and complexity on essentially the same hardware? - Kevin C. Tofel
Yup. Mine too. Lots of little hiccups in my iPhone 3G. Especially, web pages quitting for no apparent reason, returning me to home screen. - Len Edgerly
what bothers me more then anything, is the whole 1 hour backup that you have to cancel out of, holy ted whats up with that - Socom
mine happens the worst when i'm trying to use the keyboard. doesn't matter if it's for a txt, notes, or email. takes about 30 seconds or more to type. - Veronica
I get occasional full restarts. Very annoying since the iPhone 2.0 software takes so long to boot up now. - Michael Narciso via NoiseRiver
Keyboard was hella lagging earlier, i was words in front of it and having to sit back and wait for it to catch up. Restarted and all ok again now. - Simon Wicks
No problems here. It's been working like a charm (so far) - John Frenette via twhirl
major reboots for me on app launches. I had a period today where 3rd party apps would open then close - Matt Devost
Mine reboots if I play a video podcast without explicitly using the "video" tab. Before 2.0 it would just play the audio fine from anywhere. - Dwayne
Yeah, that and my passwords show while I type. That's ungood. - Alan
Mine is getting very bad signal...actually have an appt to get it looked at Friday. - Jay Martin
Yep its buggy when dealing with apps. Needs an update. - Sean Davis
mine is very sluggish..hopefully we will see an update very soon..hopefully there is a software issue with draining the battery too so well see better battery...at least i hope! - iJohn via feedalizr
yep. when mine was jailbroken it worked like a champ, now it hangs in the breeze whenever it wants. - grant
make sure you have the official release not the pre-release from the night before & try turning off push data - mike "glemak" dunn
Raising hand for the iPod Touch 2.0 firmware. Some of the Apps have crashed too. Tho I noticed that several apps have updated within the past couple of days. Rumors suggest that a newer firmware is being readied. - George Brickner
I find certain apps are causing problems (memory leaks, etc.) and that I have to reboot daily. If I don't use any apps other than Apple's, it runs pretty stable. - Jim Bergman
It's crashing almost as much as it did when I jailbroke it. Almost. - Bwana McCall
Sergio, I've tried holding the home button for 6 seconds to "force quit" applications in order to attempt to free memory by that assumption. It hasn't made *that* much of a difference, but it does help some with memory intensive apps like Mail, Safari and iPod - Bwana McCall
@Veronica I have had the same keyboard issues. App crashing not that bad. - Andy Lewandowski
Day 6 for me with no lock ups, freezes or crashes. Had a couple free apps that won't run but only those 2. - Al Degutis via twhirl
I love my iPhone for everything that I can use it for, but someitmes I just want to chuck it out the window - and then I remember I waited in line for 8 hrs :/ - Jennifer Van Grove via twhirl
I have been experiencing smi-frequent Safari crashes. No random lockups as of yet though. - Patrick via twhirl
I've noticed too, on my iPod it's painful typing anything at times. - Josue Salazar
I've had apps crash to the homescreen, but only one reboot so far. What annoys me more than that is that iTunes wants to back up the phone every time I plug it in. Also, why is the contacts app so slow? - Frederic
I find when my keyboard slows down if I hold down the home button (not just press it) until it resets to the home screen and then reenter my app or txt it is much more fluid. 2.0 needs some definate stability work. - aka Taylor
Yup ... freezes every couple days. Sometimes it even reboots. - Jeff
2.0 is certainly flakier than 1.1.4. Apps lock up and reboots the iPhone randomly. - Marshall Bose
but why even write to us then? they don't need our consent. - Veronica
Its also possible that originally that was not there intent either, but received a lot of email or something saying.. "hey how about getting them to pose".... course I doubt that, they are pretty smart folk over there, but its possible :) - Socom
Maybe they extended it as a courtesy so as not to offend you this way if they decided they would proposition about posing, you'd be more open to it? I'm just speculating here, btw... - Vincent Ferrari
Some of these magazine-people have slime for ethics. Unfortunately too many mainstream reporters aren't much better. I was idealistic when younger, but as many of my friends got interviewed for stories & found their quotes twisted by reporters "pre-conceived" stories....it was really disappointing. Some good journalists out there, but it's pretty bad... - Mitchell Tsai
and I have no idea what you are talking about... lol - Socom
Hence, the reason why I've recently stopped reading Tech Crunch and unsubscribed to Michael Arrington. I stopped reading when all they started writing about was comparisons to Twitter and FriendFeed. Annoying... let's hear some real news. - Michael Narciso via NoiseRiver
The only comment I made was wondering why they contacted us at all if they weren't going to be upfront about it. They didn't need our consent either way, so why bother? But now I'm looped into this article like I'm making a big stink. - Veronica
I smell a great blog post. Short, sweet and unlikely to piss off Playboy or TC. - AJ Kohn
yeah, and I realize I'm probably making it worse, but I just hate misinformation. Michael easily could have asked me about my opinion and didn't bother. He just went off one comment and then took it out of context. - Veronica
Well, not that my opinion matters, but... I agree PB was not forthcoming in the request, however as V said in another Twit, its nice to be included, and doesn't mean you have to pose. I think your response to TechCrunch was prefect, and that the title of the article was stupid. - Socom
Well porn is sort of the third rail isn't it? You wouldn't pose, but some may see it as a passive endorsement anyway. - AJ Kohn
For what it's worth, your comment itself -- without the manufactured context -- reads pretty ho-hum and c'est la vie, like you're not as offended as he's making you out to be. I think that comes across to a degree that his context is a little forced. His post would have been just as effective had he focused on Sarah and used your comment peripherally. - Kevin Hessel
quoting out-of-context to 'sensationalize' and get attention. Happens in mass (mess) media and new media too. What's so new about new, anyway? ;) - Yung-Hui Lim
I'm saying that some (not me) might paint your "okay to be included but not to pose" as passive PB endorsement. They want outrage. - AJ Kohn
are you saying there is something wrong with PB Mag? (not that I read it, but that GND show is funny as hell) - Socom
FTW i am amazed that anyone considers PB to be pRon. They should have been upfront about the poll though. (ie. if you win we will ask you to model) - Robert
@Socom: *chuckling* Me? No, I don't think there's anything wrong with PB magazine. Not that I have any laying around the house or anything! - AJ Kohn
Its ok with me that you don't want out ... really ok... - Todd Loren Sinclair
would i buy a copy if you posed? yep and cheer for geek ladies everywhere - Danny Pratt
I'm really getting sick of all this pressure being put on this group of women from all sides. I happen to like PB, but they should have been more upfront... meanwhile, Laporte is out there telling them that they're being demeaned and insulted, and if they don't agree, there's something wrong with their values... while others here on FF are threatening to "disown" the participants if they were to dare to do what they like with their own lives. - Roger Benningfield
@Roger: I completely agree. It's not fair at all. It's a bit sad that people seem to get more upset about nudity (or even the prospect of nudity) than violence. <sarcasm>People getting shot and beat up, that's okay - but the human body without clothes - egads! </sarcasm> - AJ Kohn
People who don't care about video, apparently. That's based upon what I heard in line. - Roger Benningfield
I will be getting a white 16 GB Wednesday!!! - Grant
I bought an 8GB. I didn't want white to begin with, and I couldn't justify spending another $100 for just another 8GB, especially considering when I never came close to filling my last 8GB. - John Barker
I do wonder if the percentage of 8GB sales is vastly disproportionate. Hmm. - Nicole Lee
This reminds me a lot of some things Jane McGonigal has spoken about in the past -- bringing "gaming" into the real world. Not gaming in the sense of sports, but more like questing. - Veronica
I doubt I'd participate, even being the huge WoW fan that I am. Makes me wonder if there are any PvP combat games for the iPhone (now or coming)? It seems like it'd be fun to virtual-battle random people while out and about. Ad-hoc arena games like shooters and fighters, sports, turn-based games, ... - nicerobot
Wish I had time to ramp-up on iPhone dev faster. I'd totally right apps to integrate real-world gaming with the technology. Proximity and GPS based games (kinda including questing) seem like a lot of fun to me. - nicerobot
This is the dumbest story I've ever read. - Clay Lewis
Real world gaming is a fascinating subject. It's like combining board games, "backyard" games, and video games in a larger geographical space. It has the potential to generate some very interesting, exciting, awkward, and even dangerous situations. - Brian
I like geocaching because it reminds me of "real world gaming" [kind of] - Rachel R.
I said once on the podcast that they could open a theme park. - Michael Gaines
Has anyone done a cross of these types of games with laser tag or paint ball? That could be pretty cool. Or maybe a GOW Lancer Assault Rifle? :P - Brian
Where is the 'Hide' "Everyones" Diggs option? - Percival Carti3r
I guess immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I really do wish they'd at least link to my article from which they shamelessly plagerized though. Writing your own thoughts is not that difficult. - Josh Lowensohn
I haven't missed twitter since I stopped using it over two weeks ago. Welcome to the club, now all you have to do is get mashable to change it's autoposting to frriendfeed and/or identica. - Jim Jannotti
