I'm no @fruchter or @monaaa, but I just noticed I have exactly 5,000 likes in FriendFeed to date.
Heh, I have 11,200. I wonder what that means, since Louis is the one who convinced me to join FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble
I just started to really use it, so I don't have that many, or really anything with Friendfeed, but still loving it. - Brendon Wadey
@Robert, it means that you have been more active in less time. Everybody has their own pace. Tyson Key for example, has more than 1,400 likes this week alone. http://friendfeed.com/vmlemon At this pace, he may catch you in 11 weeks, assuming you stay at your 500/week trend. - Louis Gray
I seem to have Liked more items than I've commented on, for what it's worth. - Tyson Key
I'm probably not as prolific as Robert or Louis though (yet). ;) - Tyson Key
I frequently find that a comment in not really needed and I will just like. - Robert Miller
While I find your 5000 total just about manageable in my friendfeed 500+ per week are just scary. I like being subscribed to several people and there is little point in following individuals who generate several pages per day (unless you hide their likes - which kind of negates subscribing in the first place). I am very happy for you and others to be my Scoble filter :) - Alexander Kohlhofer
I comment more than I like. I usually only like if I don't have time to comment, really have nothing to ad to the conversation but want to vote for it, or want to "mark" it for reading/participation later. I might comment and like something if it REALLY tickles me. - Lindsay
Alexander: you can always look at my likes at http://www.friendfeed.com/scoblei... to see what you're missing. Generally the stuff I like and comment on is pretty damn good. There are pages every day because the flow here is incredible. - Robert Scoble
Actually, my "like only" feed is here: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... - Robert Scoble
I am not saying the quality of your likes is low - only that the quantity is to much for me. I am amazed how you manage to keep up :) - Alexander Kohlhofer

I have struggled to increase the signal vs noise rate in may daily intake and feel I have been largely successful. But the signal is ever growing and find myself more and more relying on others to further distill the information for me. Trusting others to find the right stuff in any given field works really well. I am down to some 200 feeds in GReader (vs 600+ a while back). - Alexander Kohlhofer
WOW, that's awesome!! Louis you are the most amazing FF'er on here... plus you really got me all fired up about it, so did Robert. You're early FF blog post were the best too! thanks so much :) - Susan Beebe
1018 for me. Which kind of disturbs me since my rationale for a like is typically, "something I want to get back to". As if! - Laura Norvig
The more I think about that, the more I wish I could just add one little tag when I "Like" something. Would make it easier to go back to the likes in an organized fashion later (tech vs. food, for example). - Laura Norvig

@mike true but the xbox 360 has new releases available too separately remember, this is the ultimate living room box in my opinion now - hands down. - MG Siegler
More iPhones were sold over the last 3 days than AppleTVs in its entire history. The good news for Apple is that when you have 0 market share, announcements calling for your decimation don't fluster you as much. - Robert Seidman
@larry check out our FF room, dean is pumping stats in there. http://friendfeed.com/rooms... - MG Siegler
@MG But for how long will they be better? A month? A week? A day? For someone like me who just wants a way to play video/audio podcasts, watch video from Hulu, and rent on-demand from a place like Apple, Amazon or Netflx, I want a simple and cheap box that I can hook up to me TV. I would prefer my Tivo to do it, but that won't happen for quite a while there. - Mike Wills
@mike - i suspect hulu could be the next shoe to drop in the living room wars. if some service gets them it's on again. apple needs to respond in someway, not sure how they will yet. - MG Siegler

I hope everyone noticed that they said they are bringing the "Watch Instantly" feature to the Xbox 360. I used that feature once, and I hated it to death. There were barely any good movies on it. Now, I'm not saying that this couldn't change, but unless the movie studios agree to it, it isn't that big of a deal. - James Mowery from twhirl
http://www.dyers.org/blog... But, of course, I want to watch Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. - James Mowery from twhirl
Again, more coverage from Thomas Hawk about how DRM sucks on "Watch Instantly." http://thomashawk.com/2008... - James Mowery from twhirl
So, to recap, this is not big news UNLESS the movie studios change their acts. Of course, what on earth could possibly lead us to believe such a thing? There is no proof that movie studios want to change, yet. I wish this Netflix coming to Xbox 360 news was a big deal, but it isn't. So, please, if you are blogging, check your sources and facts, and point out the fact that the movie studios have to do it right if this is going to be worth talking about in the future. - James Mowery from twhirl
@James Mowery - I think youre missing it. Watch instantly combined with the new releases from current Xbox offerings make it a pretty good package from a device many already own. So you get new releases and older stuff now. It's a whole movie store at your fingertips. - Jay Martin
@james - what jay said :) - MG Siegler
@Jay Martin Do you use this feature on a daily basis? Do you believe it coudl really compete with Hulu? I'm all over it Jay. I've already pointed you out to several resources that state that "Watch Instantly" is no big deal. Why? Because the selection is horid, the quality is horid, and the DRM is stupid. Using this feature just empowers movie studios to believe that DRM is the way to go. - James Mowery from twhirl
If I was Hulu, I would say "Netflix ain't got **** on me!" So, people can play this up as a big deal, but those people are wrong. I've presented the facts. Maybe people are just biased to Microsoft or Netflix, but the "Watch Instantly" feature is pathetic, and until they prove it to me otherwise, it is a shame to see people jump for joy when we have nothing to cheer about. Apple TV has... more... - James Mowery from twhirl
It's a matter of opinion..and yes I own an Roku. I use Netflix watch instantly 3-4 times a week. Love re-runs of Office, A-Team and Rockford Files. New stuff too like the ten part "Carrier" documentary and much of Ken Burns work...It's worth it to me. My new release come to me via DVD mailers. I'm happy for $9 a month. - Jay Martin
@jason - that's the only piece left missing, blu-ray. i fully expect an add-on sooner rather than later. maybe the holidays? - MG Siegler
Here is what I'm saying... let's actually see what Netflix and Microsoft produce BEFORE we jump for joy with all our praise. I would prefer people to criticize the fact that "Watch Instantly" hasn't been a big success. This way, Microsoft and Netflix know what the people want. I am completely open to the idea what Watch Instantly could revolutionize the Xbox 360 and vice-versa, but there are no facts (or few legitimate opinions from the past) that should give anyone that opinion just yet. - James Mowery from twhirl
For example: we know nothing of the video quality that will be provided to us. Don't you think that video studios will be a bit concerned to stream 720p movies to an Xbox 360 if people have a way to capture it? You surely must see how much DRM Microsoft and Netflix have integrated into "Watch Instantly" It does nothing but make the experience a huge frustrating mess. I just hope that... more... - James Mowery from twhirl
That is AWESOME! - Ryan Stewart
well, hold on. the 360 is a closed system, like Comcast's OnDemand. It is a big step in Microsoft's digital household strategy. Up until this point, you had to pay Microsoft for the privilege of renting the movie via the Media Store on the 360. If you could use your Netflix account to "Watch It Now", then Microsoft gives up some direct revenue for increasing lockin for their console, and Netflix gets...well, I don't know what Netflix gets. Companies tend to get burned when partnering with Microsoft. - Justin Whitaker
@James Mowery - that does it! I'm subscribing to your FF! - Jay Martin
@jason I think Microsoft has made it obvious that they want digital distribution to be in their future and avoid Blu-ray at all costs. It would make sense for them to do just that. If they can find away to make the Xbox 360 the ultimate media machine without Blu-ray integration, it would just make Sony's position that much more difficult in the long run. I thought Sony was catching up,... more... - James Mowery from twhirl
There were already 3 Windows Media Center plugins for Netflix (http://is.gd/Tds) and now this! Awesome! - Sarah Perez
@Jay Martin Thanks :) - James Mowery from twhirl
@sarah - yeah i use my xbox to stream everything from my computer to my tv -- even though I have a mac! it's a great living room hub that just got 10000 times better in my book. - MG Siegler
At this point I don't see a reason to pay for a BlueRay player... digital distribution is so close that I couldn't see investing in the disks anyway. So far my Xbox Live subscription has done a great job with movies and TV - adding Netflix will only help. - Soulhuntre
It's wrong to laugh at those who bought the Roku, right? Early adopter my butt. I prefer smart adopter. ;) - Cyndy
Soulhuntre: thats why WB caved to Bluray - to try and quickly sell some sort of HD discs before digital distribution takes over. Have to say, I much rather renting in HD on my AppleTV then buying a disc. I usually only watch a movie once. - James Hull
wow, this is awesome move by M$... the masses are gonna mobilize to this one! - Susan Beebe

iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated - http://www.engadget.com/2008...
Yes, everyone who didn't stand in line this morning can now begin laughing. - Carla Thompson
I'd think the net-crush this time would be lighter than iPhone 1.0, and they did OK with that. But maybe along with all the Apps downloads, etc. it is more load than they planned for. - Anthony Citrano
@Carla - exactly. I love Apple, and I am going to go get an Airport Express today/tonight for another project, but I can't see standing in a long line for anything. Just not in my personality. - Anthony Citrano
Does anybody know what the line is like at the San Francisco store now? I want a new phone, but don't have the time for a long wait in line. - Jeremy Brooks
So will those who walk out with an unactivated iPhone 3G be somehow charged if we don't activate within 30 days? - Hao Chen
Nelson has something to say about that: http://op-for.com/simpson... ... (Sorry) - Chris Reed
Oh and my email is down too. I feel completely cut off from the outside world. - Carla Thompson
Not here... In Rochester, they said too damn bad. - Cyndy
Activation Server down affects first gen iPhones too that try to upgrade to 2.0 - yes, I wasn't paying attention and hit the upgrade automatically, iPhone is now sitting there deactivated with inability to connect to iTunes store. - William Reveal
Wow, guess AT&T/Apple should really have tried the "stadium flush" test before going out - Doug Haslam from twhirl
And once again, AT&T screws the whole thing up (the activation server isn't something Apple controls). - Adam Turetzky
That and the iPod touch 2.0 update still isn't available - Nick Humphries
The guy that helped me at the AT&T store said that they didn't set up any sort of internal access to iTunes so, not only were they dealing with traffic from other stores, but also from regular joes around the globe accessing iTunes. Brilliant. - Carla Thompson
And thus begins my guilt for leaving ITunes open on the PC when I left home today... (wife is home... figure she'll use it...) - Chris Reed
Well, which is it?? Some are saying it's Apple's global iTunes servers failing - Adam says it's ATT's servers... - Anthony Citrano
It's my understanding (and I certainly could be wrong) that the "activation" step of the process is done over TCP/IP to AT&T's serial # servers to register your phones radio transceiver (or check it's registration in the case of a firmware update to an already registered phone) on their network. Something Apple would really have no business running or dealing with. - Adam Turetzky
Nope... the issue is with registering to Apple. Phone is now working, but can't sync to iTunes because it can't connect to Apple. - Cyndy
I have a really pretty white apple brick, I like to look at it.. maybe touch it lightly, every once in a while. - Phil Glockner
i did a little retrospective with a bunch of videos taken during the failure here in SF http://venturebeat.com/2008... - MG Siegler
To top everything off on my iPhone misadventure, I discovered the little handheld devices Apple stores reps are using? Ya, they run Windows. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you. But kind of ironic, wouldn't you say? - Tom Landini
I've been trying to download the 2.0 upgrade for my iTouch since 8AM this morning. Keep getting a message the the iTunes store is unavailable. Itunes itself upgraded fine and actually lets me select the app and add them. Anyone else having this issue? - Kevin Shannon
SF downtown store had a line down the block and around the corner. AT&T store across Market was shorter, but still estimated at over an hour. I think I will leave early today and go wait in line. - Jeremy Brooks
My girlfriend is at the Freehold, NJ mall and says there's a good 4-500 people in a line coming from the Apple store. Don't know how the AT&T store is doing in the mall. - Robert DeBord

Kablam! - Dan Kaplan
After a brief test drive of Lively, I very much agree. Lively is more like a minor upgrade to Zwinky than a SL competitor. - Jon Galloway
Right now, Lively seems to be 3d VChat not SL - Dennis E. Hamilton from twhirl
So exactly who has been saying that this is meant to compete with Second Life? It's possible that there are people in the world besides Californians you know? - Adewale Oshineye
It's fun. Certainly not as full-featured as SL, and certainly less confusing. I played with it for a few hours and enjoyed myself. Will I use it regularly? probbaly not, as virtual environments are typically not my thing, but still fun to play around with. - Douglas E. Welch from twhirl

FriendFeed's Growth Rate Continues to Eclipse Twitter - http://siteanalytics.compete.com/friendf...
FriendFeed's Growth Rate Continues to Eclipse Twitter
A few weeks back I predicted that FF would overtake Twitter in users in less than one year. Compete's new June numbers are out now. Last month FF grew 33.7% while Twitter grew 5.4%. Assuming a static month over month growth rate, based on June's numbers, FF would have more users than Twitter in a little over 6 months. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Interesting - For me, Twitter and FriendFeed still serve different purposes and that seems to be the case for a lot. So while many Twitter-ers may adopt FriendFeed - I don't see it completely surpassing it in 6 months.... - George Smith
Awesome. Keep watching this space. - Hao Chen
I'm guessing the overlap in the user bases should be pretty high. So even though the rate of growth of Twitter may be much lower, i have a feeling most of the people who joined FF recently are already on Twitter. Till we have a comparable number, it may not be a completely true analysis to say people are preferring FF *over* twitter, would it? I too believe they serve different purposes and should co-exist. - Parth Awasthi
They may have different purposes but they are definitely competing for the same attention width. - Brian Sullivan
George, I agree, I have them both open right now, is that weird? - Cody Heitschmidt
Certainly FF is siphoning off some of Twitter's growth. I think though that FF is much more addictive and multifaceted than Twitter and is the stronger momentum play right now. If I were running a hedge fund (I'm not) and these were both publicly traded companies (they're not of course) I'd be tempted to short Twitter and use the money to buy long shares in FF. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas - Thanks for your thoughts. When twitter has negative growth three consecutive months we will have another facet to discuss. - Russellreno
I'm with George Smith on this one. This is not an either or. These are 2 good tools and I'm sticking with both for now. BUT, with every Fail Whale I see, my doubts grow. - shelisrael1
The initial growth of FriendFeed, but if you look at the total volume of users of both services, FF has a ways to go before it's going to overtake Twitter. - Brandon Wood
when either gets to 10m users they we will have a story - David Henderson from twhirl
i see the need for both but would like to see friends collapsed as 1 set - Lee Kent
we'll know these companies have made in when all the good people have left, the comments are full of pr0n spam and your mum asks you for your username... - Barry de la Rosa
I think one of the main reasons for more adoptiong is the ability to have a tru conversation, without having to hunt for messages every few seconds. I think it would be great if they do some more features to make it easier - Shivanand Velmurugan from twhirl
comparing month on month growth rates isn't really that helpful here. obviously the doubling time for FF is going to be less than Twitter because it is starting from a smaller base. In terms of users/month Twitter has been growing faster than FF, something I expect Twitter are pretty happy with given their recent problems. - Samuel Bostock
Samuel, that's what people said last month. Since then FF's growth has only gotten stronger though while Twitter's has gotten weaker. month on month growth rates certainly are anything but accurate forecasting tools. Still, perhaps FF will eclipse Twitter's growth even *more* next month. - Thomas Hawk
I never imagined this would have this fast - Akshay Dodeja
The big question in my mind is when will the FF graph flatten out? Trees don't grow to the sky and every site / service will start to plateau at some point. Either way, this will be fun to watch. - Mike Doeff
Just imagine how fast they would grow if they incorporated Facebook status and Myspace content. Right now they are siphoning from a small pond, Twitter and the microblogging networks. There is a lot more opportunity for growth if those two are brought into the fold. - Andrew
I don't think it's a shock that FF growth rate is high. Twitter broke new ground. Most FFers are Twitters also -- and Twitter was probably the first mircoblog we've all used. Making the switch is easier. - Rob Williams
uuhh.. is *no one* here discussing how compete.com gets it's data? vitally important.. - Barbara K. Baker
I'm seeing much less response on Twitter, and I hope it's not because I've gotten boring- I think the conversations are on FF. - Brian Carter
I definitely spend more time on FriendFeed these days than I do on Twitter, even though I have orders of magnitude more friends on Twitter. I would say there's not much competition there! - Scott Jarkoff
Its interesting to watch. But there is still the simplicity of Twitter that keeps many who have grown accustomed to a society that offers crap service as the universal standard. - Curtis "Billy" Cross from twhirl
It depends which way you look at this data. I'd rather have Twitter's curve. - John McCrea
It sure is funny to watch the these bloggers push FriendFeed, like they are getting paid or something! - Thomas Capote from twhirl
It looks like social media aggregation is a major rising tide. Check out Plaxo Pulse vs. FriendFeed. Remarkably similar slopes. http://siteanalytics.compete.com/friendf... - John McCrea
JMc - Plaxo is growing faster than FF, and I have not seen any hype around Plaxo. - Russellreno
but still, i can't help but think FF is rising BECAUSE of twitter. people come here to check it out. if they stay, great. if not, they've still got the numbers. right now it's like a few months ago when everyone was talking/blogging about @twubble and other "twitter-pack" type apps and bots. i had a HUGE follower surge. same shit, different month. - Hillary Hartley
Russellreno: It's because we chose private sharing and conversations for mainstream users around circles of family, friends, etc. - John McCrea
Clearly, though, I use both services (and really like them both). As the British would say "horses for courses." (Different horses are better for different courses. - John McCrea
John - Agreed. My Plaxo invites come from friends that would not find FF useful. Just the same, when the Twitter v FF conversation comes up Plaxo isn't mentioned although it is tracking with FF. - Russellreno
I've been watching Compete's 'Velocity' tracking between FriendFeed and Twitter. It has grown exponentially. I am definitely convinced at this point that Twitter is to Friendster like FriendFeed is to Facebook. I only wish I could buy stock... - Philip Ryan Johnson

@reybango Sorry if I'm coming across as curt; I'm just wary of GTalking with people I don't know, because it exposes my real name. (Grr!)
Wait, Your real name is not Voyagerfan5761? - RAPatton
It's not the one on my birth certificate... :D - dgw
And now I wish I hadn't deleted this one from Twitter... Sort of. Oh well. - dgw
I've been duped. All these months, that isn't your real name?!?! - Bwana ☠
Interesting. I took the decision many years ago to start using my real name on the web... mainly because I trust the circles I am a part of. Plus I find it hard to get to know someone who's name I am unaware of (no offense, Voyager!). - Matt Frog
The name on my mom's birth certificate was Johndalynn (I kid you not), but they revised it about 6 weeks later. A girlfriend's mom in high school changed her name to "Jet" in the 70s because of the Wings song. So your name could still be Voyagerfan5761, because you were super-inspired by Capt. Janeway to replace your ordinary moniker. - RAPatton

The general public thinks it's so dangerous to put your real name on the internet; but if you're smart about it I think it's the best thing you can do. Being the number one hit in Google for your name is great especially for your career. Been public with my name for about 5 years now and would never go back. I even put my email address out there in plain text. - Benjamin Golub
I guess that I made the decision to post as myself and have thing be attributable to me when I came back to the web. - Mathew A. Koeneker
I decided to use my real name everywhere a few years ago too. I think it helps people to trust and respect you when leaving comments. Of course, that heavily depends on what you actually say... ;-) On a related note, I should warn you that there are ways to find out the full name that's associated with a Gmail / Google Apps account without chatting on GTalk or having any contact with the account owner. (And assuming Voyagerfan5761 used his real name, I could tell you it right now but I obviously won't...) - Tony Ruscoe
@Tony: So not chatting isn't an effective way to stay anonymous? Oh well. Can you tell me how you found out? Since you obviously know my email address... :-) I'm curious now. - dgw

Twitter Pro -- one year later, same request: take my money for less down - http://www.calacanis.com/2008...
calacanis has been saying this for a while. i'd pay something too - maybe not $20 a month, but perhaps $5 to $10 if i could be assured the service wouldn't go down and if it gained more functionality. - MG Siegler
So when the system goes down for the 95% of people who are on the free version, I get to continue tweeting with the handful of people who have offered to pay? If I can't have access to 100% of my community then a paid version that is always up for me would have very little benefit IMHO. Now I would pay for enhanced features. - Mike Doeff
