Plans made with friends days ago, gave us an ETA of 11am to eat. They are not here yet, they have not called yet. (and they were planning on making their ham here when they arrived) I was preparing for plans, I put the turkey in for it's 45 min heat time. Which ended, at 11am.
I turned off the oven, and am so afraid that the rather expensive smoked turkey is going to dry out if I have to heat it up again. I am so so so very pissed right now, that there is no way I can hold a civil tongue when they arrive. They do this every year, they are late, totally unprepared and come in and make me stressed in the kitchen. This is supposed to be a peaceful day, and I am so angry I want to cry.
- aden (and junk)
this too shall pass....................don't let the negativity ruin it for you........
- VAL D.
Val's right... and maybe next year, to avoid this invite some other friends, who are a bit more timely or at least considerate. When invited somewhere, the invitee has an obligation as well as the inviter, so that things go smoothly. IMO (and so says my mom :D)
- Bette Cooper
Oh it is pretty much ruined. I have no appetite for the food in the kitchen, and I have nothing to say to these people. I just want them to eat and leave so we can go see a movie and I can enjoy my holiday. I haven't been this angry in so long. And not having drugs to control my blood pressure/mood means I have no filter. Which is bad. (I come from a tradition of very calm, peaceful Thanksgivings. This is not how it works for me, and it is something I refuse to get used to)
- aden (and junk)
I wish I could come over and make you laugh. I'm sorry your day's turned out not quite like you wanted.
- cecily
I can understand that, Aden, and there's no reason you should get used to it, really. Maybe now's the time to go catch an early movie... since they couldn't be on time, or even call, if they haven't shown up yet, see what's playing. No reason for your day to be further messed up.
- Bette Cooper
Aw, I'm so sorry about that. I hope you managed to find your appetite and just tucked into your dinner. I've had friends that were like that and I finally just stopped waiting for them. If our agreed upon time was 11 a.m. and they weren't there by 11:15, I went ahead without them. Life's too short to be held back by people who show such little respect for you or your time.
- vicster
pick a good book, put on a good music, pour a glass of wine. Breath deeply and let it go. what is done is done.
- Mycaptain
I am pretty sure they realize I am upset, and I will admit that I haven't been the friendliest person. (I apologized to my boyfriend for being rude. He deserved the apology) But food has been consumed, and now we are just going to hang out. (joy) Which means I am chaining myself to the laptop.
- aden (and junk)
girls department :) hey Kamilah what are you working on these days?
- ffcode
ffcode, what do you mean? (I don't want to hijack vicster's thread. You can ask me this and hijack one of mine instead.)
- Kamilah Gill
okay i was asking what art piece are you working now days, and as for "girls department" i used that term because colors and dresses is basically a girl thing am i wrong here? do tell :)
- ffcode
as for dress i don't know how these "without shoulder support" dresses can stand on one's body? are these made tight on the top? don't they fear they might be literally naked if the dress drops down? but color is good not that i can wear it but for parties etc this color seems great for girls :)
- ffcode
and hey Vic i think you should change your homepage for a wider look, you should try google sites maybe, they have templates now, good luck with that :)

Yes and OMG yes. Friday is inventory day, we have six trucks and a warehouse full of parts (250 pages x 80 items per page). Today is inventory prep day---argh!
- Shannon
I'm at my office away from the home office. And I was working, but then I accidentally opened friendfeed.
- Jim Hearts FF
not at work, have nothing to do i m quite bored today :(
- ffcode
I'm furloughed *sigh* But, I'm glad to have a 5-day weekend and a job to go back to Monday. Will I work on things around the house...maybe...
- Courtney McGough
Yes, at work. And yes, working. Trying to cut out by 1pm so I can go see my daughter read her essay at the school's DARE graduation.
- Morgan Haley
Yes. And I'll be back on Friday and Saturday, too.
- Victor Ganata
Victor- I'm sorry dude. I'll do some extra lounging for you on Friday. I'll be at the beach, by the way, so that warm sensation you feel will be proxy sunburn
- Morgan Haley
Yup---and I'm on desk all afternoon. And the kids are already on sensory overload.
- Abigail
Yup. We're supposed to get off early but somehow I don't think that's gonna happen. And I have a 4 hour road trip to Houston ahead of me today. :(
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Yes, don't distract me. I gotta clear off my desk. No, really.
- Laura Norvig
I did, for about 45 min. (work from home), but now I can't be bothered and there's food to prepare for tomorrow. So, work's done. :)
- Cassandra
I feel that I should definitely participate in tonight's meme and report that we're Alive after today's fire! (Luna was the only one in real danger.) I've got a messed-up trouser sock on my head to hold my hair down for the night. (I normally use old pantyhose, but I forgot them.)
I'm tired of how some people can just post stuff and then people comment but when I post stuff no one responds.. these popular people can all fuck off and burn in hell I hope they die in fires.
I ALSO HATE ALL HAPPILY MARRIED PEOPLE BECAUSE I AM BITTER

I HATE ALL MARRIED PEOPLE BECAUSE I AM BITTER. That's not true, though. Married people are often very helpful at finding single people for me. On the other hand, they have so far failed in the long-term. I AM AGAIN BITTER.

Okay who slipped the Clutz-Eze into my Pepsi Max this morning. Seriously. Tripping over my own feets? Slamming my finger in the bathroom stall door? (OW) Not cool.
A friend of mine & I played a similar game, where we asked each other what famous person you'd like to pistol whip. I said Frank Sinatra (this was before he'd died). Great singer, but a total son of a bitch.

Also Snow White, and Winnie the Pooh. It was a double feature, if I recall correctly. When we got home, I started bawling. I was upset because Rabbit made Tigger stop bouncing.

Also: Fantasia (the 1940 version). Probably saw it around 1976 or 1977.

DAMN, I want to see Fantasia. I don't think I ever have. :(

- SATAN HATES HAT!
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but I don't actually *remember* being in the theatre and seeing it, just that I was 4 and on vacation with my parents on Cape Cod. I definitely remember that my dad took me fishing after.
- PENGUIN: MAJOR CAPS LOCK
Mine was at the drive-in too, Nikki! We had a van and my parents would take us in our PJs and put us to bed in the back when we got tired.

Star Wars, 1977. To be fair, I was 4 and I don't *specifically* remember seeing much of the movie (and now I can't remember what I remember and what I know from seeing it later)- but I remember going, with my grandfather and older brothers, and I remember being very cold in the Eastgate movie theater, in Chattanooga (now a YMCA).
- ÉllbeeÇee
Purple Rain, and my mom covered my entire face when the sex scenes came on. >.<

Pinocchio, I think. On rerelease in the mid-1980s. The first first-run one I can remember was, I think, Hot to Trot. *sigh*
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Unfortunately? ET. I was terrified and screaming. I think I was about 3.
- Laura H.
I know it wasn't the first, but I clearly remember going to see "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" when I was five or six and having my mom cover my eyes when the shaman guy ripped the still beating heart out of the other guy's chest. My parents didn't realize it was going to be so much scarier than "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
- Shannon Jiménez
I remember going to the drive in with my sister and me in our pajamas, falling asleep in the back seat during The Poseidon Adventure. First film I remember seeing inside was Star Wars.
- Ken Sheppardson
I don't remember. It was probably at the drive-in. Anna, my Dad took me and my bros to watch Purple Rain. It was awesome :D

I loved it too, once I saw it as an adult. at 8 or 9 (when I saw it the first time), I think I was a wee bit too young to understand what was going on. A parent took a group of her daughter's friends to the movies for her birthday, and she chose an R-rated movie.
- cecily
I was not allowed to see Empires Strike Back. I got a glimpse of the theater and the lines though.
- CW™
I remember seeing The Neverending Story with my grandparents at Ford City Mall in Chicago. I also remember seeing Ghostbusters at the world's largest drive in theater (also in Chicago, now long since closed) with my aunt and uncle. I remember Gremlins was playing on another, smaller screen, which was almost watchable from where were parked.
- Andy Bakun
Hm. It could have been Popeye. I remember seeing that in the theater.
- Rodfather
Snow White, the 1983 re-release -- I was 5. Pretty sure I saw the Rainbow Brite movie in the theaters, as well as Gremlins, the following year. I'm told I saw Fox & The Hound in the theaters in 1981, but I was 2 and don't really remember it.
- Alix Whitmire
First movie I remember seeing in the theater was Lady and the Tramp.
- Shawn Whitmire
Every Which Way But Loose. I think Dad thought since the previews had a chimp in it, how bad could it be for 7 year olds? *edit* seems we were nine. That explains it.
- Michael W. May
You know, I keep thinking it was Empire, but I wasn't even 2 yet, so I'm guessing it was actually Return of the Jedi.
- Rachel Walden
Hey, I'm just bummed to realize that my first movie might have been the ewok one instead of Empire. ;)
- Rachel Walden
And this is where the "what makes you feel old" thread collides with the "first movie" thread. Shit.
- DJF
Excalibur (thought it was ET) ! thanks imdb (I remember my mom holding her hands in front of my eyes).. oh wait. I remember seeing Empire Strikes back and that came out the year before.. so that must be the answer
- JSNFLMNG
It was either Empire Strikes Back or ET. I do remember that Empire Strikes Back was the first movie I saw in another state than my home state. Labyrinth was the second.
- Arlan Koizumi
Beauty and the Beast...I recall going to movies before then, vaguely, but I have clear memories of going to that.

"OK, so I'm an old school guy, but I don't think the BART officer who grabbed a rowdy passenger by the scruff of his neck and removed him from a public train at the West Oakland Station on Saturday night did anything wrong. All I saw in the video of the incident was a police officer doing his job. It's unfortunate that a glass window on the platform shattered as the suspect tried to resist the officer's efforts to subdue him, but things like this happen sometimes when a suspect resists a law enforcement officer's efforts to establish physical control over him."
- vicster
from Bookmarklet
That's exactly what I saw in the video as well. Not every cop is an asshole. This guy was clearly out of line and needed to be removed from the train and restrained. It's awful that they went through the glass and were injured, but this time I cannot find fault with the officer.
- vicster
It was pretty mellow. Nothing like the cops at the UC protest.

++Jerome, elle etait bien placee! Love it! We're moderate users in my family with couscous, taken cold.

Depends - sometimes the taste is too strong when it's heated. Jerome :) I hardly see you anymore! :(
- Mona Nomura
Like everything goat, it's too gamey for me. The only goat stuff I like is curried goat and that's only because they spice it so damned much you can't tell it's goat anymore.
- Spidra Webster
Heated? No, I generally don't like heated goat cheese.
- Cristo
You've never had a goat cheese dish?
- Mona Nomura
Mostly I have it by itself or with a cold salad or sandwich. What's an example of a heated dish with goat cheese?
- Cristo
Pizza, paninis, and I see it a lot with Californian or "new American" cuisine - mainly combined with blander proteins (chicken breast, white fishes), with fruit. Cranberries / pomegranate, blood oranges, et al.
- Mona Nomura
Mona, yeah. I might or might not like those, although I probably don't always pay attention to whether there is goat cheese in them. In general, I don't love melted cheese, although there are obvious exceptions, like pizza the way I like it.
- Cristo
I'm not a fan - though in Indian cuisine, goat cheese is amazing (on the fence about goat meat). Goat cheese on pizza is a little too strong for me - especially with white sauces and lighter toppings ie: roma tomatoes and spinach.
- Mona Nomura
For cheese, I only like mozzarella on my pizza, and I like more sauce than cheese. :)
- Cristo
Depends on the context. I like it on grilled chicken a lot.
- Alix Whitmire
On salads or lightly spread on toast can be good for me. For one of my sons, we get a goat cheese rolled in dried cranberries and it's his favourite breakfast food - he's just as happy to eat it straight.
- Micah Wittman
It's interesting that people who don't like goat cheese cite the reason being that it smells like animal. I don't register that, so maybe that's why I like it. I do find some meat to be too "gamey" sometimes, such as lamb or venison. With a few exceptions, exotic meats are harder for me to deal with than cheeses.
- Cristo
Big fan of goat cheese here. Also many cheeses made from sheep's milk.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Bren, you are in an interesting group then, as I usually find people who like wine to also like cheese of many kinds. Of course, it's probably healthier not to like most cheese, as I think it's probably healthier not to each much of it.
- Cristo
I agree that eating too much cheese (or too much anything, for that matter) is not good. For a look at the rise of goat cheese in New American cooking, I recommend "The United States of Arugula" by David Kamp (?). http://www.amazon.com/gp...

I love goat cheese. I wouldn't mind having some goats one day. Chevre is supposed to be pretty easy to make. I agree that my penchant for four cheese pizza is unhealthy in the extreme (it's a habit I'm in the process of breaking), but I refuse to believe that a small amount of high quality cheese as an ingredient in other things is bad for you.
- Jason Wehmhoener
I like it, and so does my five year old daughter. She always orders her kid's pizza with goat cheese on top.
- AJ Kohn
Love it! Just back from Paris and think it's always better over there!

Cristo:) I eat feta cheese since i was a child- OK, it is our traditional cheese-I am Turkish:) and i put feta cheese in almost everything..Well, I like goat cheese- we have a great dessert made of it as well- but it is full of calories.....Well, one more thing I love wine. And have you heard about the Turkish raki- it goes very well with feta cheese and little dishes called meze:))) yummmmmy!
- Petek(UCB)_
I love goat cheese! So does my cat, so if I have any out I can't look away for even a second or there will be a paw swiping the dish off of the counter/table/desk.
- vicster
Petek, no I have not had Turkish raki, but I would like to try it. Maybe if I go to Turkey.
- Cristo
Oh, I just remembered. I do sometimes like cooked goat cheese. There's a fried goat cheese tapa at one of our neighborhood restaurants I like.
- Cristo
Well, it's vastly preferable to goatse cheese.
- Mark Jepsen
I completely adore my friend's cats and am so jealous that mine rarely get this close to each other without devolving into a biting/swatting/hissing/growling match.
- vicster
I love when mine touch, though they don't usually snuggle like this. Even Bear will share his bed with a cat! And Malarkey groomed Copeland for a minute or so last night. BTW, just went to the show that John's picture (above) is in; a lot of really nice shots, but his definitely deserved the Jurors' Award. Of course, one pic that didn't get one had a lovely doggy in it...

Why I Hate Twilight | Bookstove. "Her vampires sparkle. Enough said." Twilight fans, I'm sorry. Please don't block or unsubscribe, just hide this. I've had all the Twilight and whatever the 2nd book is blather I can stand, and I can't stands no more. Not only several chicks my age, but also a *guy* in the office are all devouring this doorstop. - http://bookstove.com/fantasy...
"Bella is a useless, whining, doll that suddenly has become the idol for girls everywhere. People say that Twilight is better than Harry Potter. Guess what? WRONG. Edward is extremely possessive, border-line abusive, and boring as anything. It’s too cliché. This book contains no real sex, so it’s not really a vampire novel. Read Anne Rice – those are vampires, not the girly men that Meyer has created. You don’t have to describe the character every two pages, we know all about Edward’s ‘perfectly toned chest’ the fourth time she mentions it."
- Kamilah Gill
from Bookmarklet
They are the Cory vampires, non-threatening boys. And I hate vampire stories anyway.
- Pete
That last one (plus my own brief glimpse into the tome at the bookstore) confirms my suspicion that this is a glorified romance novel with a very non-challenging, mainstream "goth" streak running through it.
- Kamilah Gill
Definitely more romance novel than vampire movie...it's all about the relationship between Bella and Edward. But better than Harry Potter? I think NOT.
- Terry Johnson
I do believe I now have a non-sexual/platonicy girl crush on you for posting this. <3

The more I hear about this (and read random excerpts from the books), the more I believe that the Twilight series was the author's NaNoWriMo projects.
- vicster
I don't know how any self-respecting adult could buy into the Twilight stuff. What's crazy is how obsessed all the fans are. I just don't get it.
- Jen Hodges
Books are about escape. Even JK Rowling has her faults, but she created a world where one can escape to. Meyer did the same thing. It's not high literature, but sometimes you just want an escape.
- Trish Haley
I'm not a Potter fan, either. Books are an escape for some. Personally, I prefer books that challenge me and teach me new things. So-called escape books usually just bore me.
- Kamilah Gill
from email
I think escape books can also challenge- see Le Guin and Tepper for example. Or Tove Jansson :)
- Pete
I am all for books being an escape, but if you are going to target a certain audience, make sure you understand what you are "feeding" them. Wrong ideas can be had, and if parents aren't stepping in to explain some young girls will look up to Bella and yeah...bad news right there. I don't know I guess I am all for stronger female characters in books that young people will read. (*quickly tries to close the can of worms she just opened* Sorry!)
- aden (and junk)
No, I see that aden. My wife has said that the level of 'need' of the characters is the issue- girls want to be needed that much. i don't see that as healthy.
- Pete
Sorry, my last response was from my phone, which didn't allow for much nuance. Pete, I guess you're right. I've at least read Jansson and I do enjoy the Moomintrolls. I guess you can call her work escapist. The story I read was a fun, quick read. But there was also some depth like you said. That's what I wish these big popular stories would have. When they flow right through my mind without resistance, I get bored fast. Also, my bigger issue with Twilight is with the values it seems to promote.
- Kamilah Gill
Kamilah, I agree with you on that last point.
- Pete

Wow... That's more than a tad ridiculous. Also, if it's mandatory, don't call it a gratuity. Call it a "we're not equipped to service large groups effectively so we bump up your price for the inconvenience of you patronizing our establishment" tax. Too wordy?
- SAM
Yet another reason I'm against tipping. Fold the real costs of your business into the price of your product. That way rude people won't stiff you. And low-level workers won't be taking the hit for the people higher up.
- Spidra Webster
Reading that is just...WOW! It's a failure of common sense on behalf of Lehigh Pub AND the cops.
- Anika
That is ridiculous! It's not a gratuity if it's part of the bill, it's a surcharge. (edited due to itchy trigger/posting finger...)
- vicster
I'll play devil's advocate. They had a party of six. The restaurant had a policy that large parties pay an 18% gratuity. The $73 bill arrived, and that total included the 18% gratuity. The couple can't arbitrarily decide to only pay $62 out of the $73 because they didn't like the service or the food. They can and should have complained to the manager, or paid then written a letter. Did...
- Stephen Mack
On the flip side of that though, if the menu doesn't say mandatory 18% gratuity then it's kind of false advertising to charge them one price and than switch out another. When I waited tables, I never had any problems with the big tables. They may not turnover as fast, but if you treat them right more often than not you win.
- Davis Freeberg
Do you hear me, do you hear me? this is gratuity this is ..this is tip....mm..but you have to pay it because its called ...hmmmm..tip.
- Mahmood Padura
Girls .. do you hear this? if you come to my house the tip is included.
- Mahmood Padura
I don't understand something from the article. The manger said the food would have been comped and they refused and didn't pay the tip instead. Was the food bill really that much lower than 16 dollars, that they needed to bring in the police?
- Dario Gomez
Dario, it's unclear if the manager really did offer to comp or not. :)
- Stephen Mack
In many other places (such as Sweden) - the tip is already included in the bill & determined by % (it is also referred to as a gratuity)
- Mekkar
In Sweden, they also have fair pricing laws that not only make them include the price of the tip into each item, but it also includes tax. If something is $5 krona, then it's actually $5 krona and not $5 + $3 more in taxes and surcharges.
- Davis Freeberg
See what happens when you don't pay a proper tip?
- Alex Scoble
@ Stephen I'm just thinking to it's stupid to lie to the press at this point.
- Dario Gomez
To me this seems to be abusing the penal system. What about rapes, drugs, robbery's, and real crimes?
- H0llywoodWh0re
If serving staff got paid at least the legal minimum wage, instead of the next to nothing they get now, then restaurant customers wouldn't effectively have to pay for their food AND the servers wages as well. A tip, in my view, should be a voluntary bonus for the staff , that while welcome, isn't needed to bring them up to a living wage.
- Ian May
I hate youth sports! I just got a call from my son's now former baseball coach telling me he does not want him on the team next year. That's twice now that a coach has cut him from our local rec team to take kids from outside the area in hopes of getting more wins under his belt.
I guess everyone forgets youth sports are supposed to be about the kids, not making the coaches look good. I guess all the games my son won pitching in the spring for him just wasn't good enough. He needs taller, stronger pitchers. I will just sit back and laugh as the team loses a lot of games and falls apart like the last coach's team did after the cuts.
- Alan Simpson
have you talked to the rec league? i'm sure they can't do that. i know i played ayso and they had rules/regulations on how much each person was required to play and they would ban coaches for trying that kinda of crap
- Sir Shuping
WTH? That is a bunch of bullshit. I am sorry for your son, no kid should have to deal with that.
- Joe
Is the baseball team part of a national organization? You'd think they had rules (at least on paper) that would prevent kids from being effectively banned from a team.
- John E. Bredehoft
that's messed up. I hope you can find another team as I wouldn't want my son on a team coached by a jackass like that guy.
- Jim Hearts FF
That sucks. Maybe soccer? AYSO's motto is "Everyone Plays". (But, yes, I absolutely hate this about the American sports mindset. It should be about fun and it should be about good sportsmanship. With the examples we have at college and pro levels, it was only a matter of time before that kind of assbackwards bad sportsmanship approach to things percolated down to the peewee level.)
- Spidra Webster
Can he do that? I mean, not that you'd want your kid playing under such an asshole, but that guy needs to not be coaching.
- Anika
Unfortunately, the coaches here can do what they want. The first coach who cut him is now the commissioner of the rec league and helped pick this team. Our organization is run by a very small, insular group that cares only about winning and making sure their kids and friends get the select spots. I'm not part of the "in crowd" so my kid suffers.
- Alan Simpson
I'm with Anika. I'd have a chat with the association about this coach. AND I'd never let my kid play for such an @-hole.
- vicster
The worst part is having to tell him it happened again. Another part the asshats don't think of when they do this to kids.
- Alan Simpson
That's rough, Alan. Is there another, saner, league in your area?
- Anika
I'm looking into it now. I would be OK with it if I felt he wasn't as good as the other players, but hew was one of their best pitchers and while he did go into a slump toward the end of the year, he had one of his best years hitting. He just too "inconsistent" for this coach.
- Alan Simpson
Also, they get away with this by moving out of the county run league and into "select" leagues where they can do what they want
- Alan Simpson
Well good luck on finding something for him. I'd hate for him to be discouraged because the coach is a short-sighted dick.
- Anika
I cannot improve upon Anika's last comment.
- Ayşe E.
I suggest taking out as many of the kids from the team until he has a space.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Hmm, that's a good idea. I've also considered starting my own team and recruiting his kids away from him.
- Alan Simpson
Now I'm even more annoyed. I just saw the list of the kids on the team. There are at least 3 kids on the team that are no where near as good as my son. One of them looked completely lost at the tryouts. I guess he's on the team because he's a few inches taller than my kid. GORC coaches do not like short kids.
- Alan Simpson
I can't believe the whole thing, are these kids trying out for a AAA or a college team? We are talking about little league right?
- Joe
It's not even an AAU team. It's a division B Little League type team. Just stupid and really pisses me off. You can mess with me all you want, but you mess with my kids and I get very angry.
- Alan Simpson
I decided to send an email to the president of the entire rec council. It turns out it is someone I've known for years. She has requested a meeting with GORC baseball to look into why local kids are being cut so kids from other areas can make the team.
- Alan Simpson
That's good, Alan. I remember how angry and helpless I felt when my sisster got cut from her select soccer team. It broke her heart and there was not a damn thing I could do about it. She quit playing on the school team a year later (junior year) because she said it wasn't fun anymore. Getting cut even though she'd helped take the Select team from a Div III to the top of a Div II really affected her. Still makes me sad and that was nearly a decade ago.
- pea ♥..!..♥..!..♥
We both agree that it is not even about my son anymore(I've already started sending emails about new baseball opportunities). It's about the younger kids coming up through GORC who will face the same issues if it isn't stopped now.
- Alan Simpson
It never ceases to amaze me how adults can ruin kids sports. I'm glad you emailed the president of the rec council and that important questions are being asked. Maybe it's time for the rec council to revisit its mission statement. Do they exist to enrich children's experience? Or is it just to win tournaments?

When I was in middle school my church league b-ball buddies informed me that the coach wished aloud that I wouldn't make it to games so he wouldn't be forced to play me the required minimum minutes. Even at that age I was more shocked at how seriously he took church league ball than I was hurt at the slight.

There (generally) are leagues that are for fun and leagues that are for serious in youth sports. I have coached ice hockey in both. Generally the coaching/training in the competitive leagues is much better. It seemed to me that kids, parents and I had a lot more fun in the house leagues. I also found that the parents of the kids in the competitive leagues refuse to accept that their kids are less talented.

Yes, but you can do the competitive leagues the right way. Our local rec football teams are the most dominant in the area and every player on all the teams are local. They don't recruit and players who played for the team the year before are given preference over new applicants. The difference is, the coaches taught the kids to play the game and worked to help them improve instead of blaming the losses on the kids, cutting them and looking for "better" players.

Agreed, Alan. The biggest problem, IMHO, is that most coaches are both volunteer and a parent. Better trained coaches are needed. That's one of the things I do, now: help train the coaches. Also, an important distinction between a competitive and a fun league is a try-out. if there isn't one, it's a fun league and should be coached as such.

And I never coached a win that wasn't the result of the kids' play or a loss that wasn't 100% coaching error.

Update: I've already had call backs from 2 coaches for tryouts with new teams. I also have an email from a local track coach about running track instead this spring.

UPDATE: My son was just offered a roster spot on a team playing one level higher than than the team that cut him. He has the possibility of playing against his former team in a pre-season tournament.

I'd love to see that go down, Alan. Good follow-through on this, BTW.

I'm sorry, Mary. You and your family are in my prayers. I share your loss. Tomorrow is the viewing for my mother and Sunday is her memorial. You will be in my heart and prayers then also.

I've been so wrapped up in my own messes that I completely missed this. I'm so sorry for your family's loss, Mary. I hope yesterday's service was beautiful...

Glad to hear he's doing okay! Yarn is a good thing to have when you're waiting in a hospital.

It is also good that I get to use his laptop while I am here too. :) It gets hard to see/read stuff on my phone.

Six in 10 California community college students give up transfer plans, never making it to universities - Lisa M. Krieger, Mercury News - http://recessionreality.blogspot.com/2009...
"This photograph shows my great-great-grandparents Albert Barker and Ellen Culpan with their children Mary Ellen, Louisa and Arnold. At first glance it's a pretty ordinary family portrait. However, there is something a little unusual about it. It depicts a scene that never actually took place as, according to family story, it was created after Ellen's death."

He was seen talking to a woman asking her if she wanted to see his lizard strapped to his leg.

You get on the plane and take your seat. The person sitting next to you takes off their jacket, revealing 15 lizards attached to their shirt. What do you do?

I am still searching/printing pictures. So don't worry if you are not there, you will be soon :) And I love it when people come to my desk and say "Who are these people?" and I proudly say "my friends" and then I get to point to the ones I have met.

Actually one of the shipper boys came over today, asked about the wall and I was pointing out where people are from and I pointed to you and said "him" and he chuckled and said "Oh good, because I didn't want to say anything about the homely looking girl in the corner" :D
