Here’s what you need to know about that Facebook experiment that manipulated your emotions — Tech News and Analysis - http://gigaom.com/2014...
In case you missed it, a storm of controversy involving Facebook blew up over the weekend, after news emerged of a psychological study that was conducted on hundreds of thousands of users of the social network without their knowledge, in which researchers manipulated the emotional cues those users saw in their Facebook streams, and then tracked their subsequent behavior. Reactions to the news ranged from resignation or even acceptance to disgust at the company’s decision, and the unethical practice of altering the emotional status of thousands of users without permission. - Vincent

New Statesman | Facebook can manipulate your mood. It can affect whether you vote. When do we start to worry? - http://www.newstatesman.com/interne...
The social network admits manipulating its users’ emotions through the content it put in their newsfeeds. Think that’s creepy? A couple of years ago, it influenced their voting patterns, too. When do we get scared about what Facebook could do with its power? - Vincent

NSA collects millions of email address books globally - http://www.theage.com.au/it-pro...
Australian authorities gathered more than 300,000 contact lists on a single day from personal email and instant messaging accounts, on behalf of the US National Security Agency, a new report has claimed. The previously undisclosed collection program intercepts email address books and instant messaging "buddy lists" as they move across the global data links. Online services often transmit those contacts when a user logs on, composes a message or synchronises a computer or mobile device with information stored on remote servers. Rather than targeting individual users, the NSA is gathering contact lists in large numbers that amount to a sizable fraction of the world's email and instant messaging accounts. Analysis of that data enables the agency to search for hidden connections and map relationships within a much smaller universe of foreign intelligence targets. - Vincent

BBC News - Security holes unearthed in Apple's iOS7 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news...
One flaw concerns a user's ability to recover their data if a device has been stolen. The much-vaunted "Find my iPhone" feature can be disabled be a thief simply by putting the iPhone or iPad into airplane mode, preventing the device from communicating. In iOS7 this can be done even when the phone is locked with a passcode, as the voice-activated assistant Siri can be instructed to carry out the task. The other flaw is potentially even more serious - allowing users' email and social networking accounts to be hijacked even when the user has locked and password-protected their phone, - Vincent

TrackMeNot for Firefox - http://cs.nyu.edu/trackmenot/
TrackMeNot, now compatible with Firefox 9.0, is a lightweight browser extension that helps protect web searchers from surveillance and data-profiling by search engines. It does so not by means of concealment or encryption (i.e. covering one's tracks), but instead, paradoxically, by the opposite strategy: noise and obfuscation. With TrackMeNot, actual web searches, lost in a cloud of false leads, are essentially hidden in plain view. User-installed TrackMeNot works with the Firefox Browser and popular search engines (AOL, Yahoo!, Google, and Bing) and requires no 3rd-party servers or services. - Vincent

Qualys SSL Labs - https://www.ssllabs.com/
There is little doubt that SSL1 is the technology that protects the Internet. By transforming insecure communication channels into opaque data streams, SSL allows sensitive data to reach its destination uncompromised. SSL Labs is a collection of documents, tools and thoughts related to SSL. It's an attempt to better understand how SSL is deployed, and an attempt to make it better. I hope that, in time, SSL Labs will grow into a forum where SSL will be discussed and improved. SSL Labs is a non-commercial research effort, and we welcome participation from any individual and organization interested in SSL. - Vincent

How to attribute Creative Commons licensed materials | Creative Commons Australia - http://creativecommons.org.au/learn-m...
How to attribute Creative Commons licensed materials All Creative Commons licences require that users of the work attribute the creator. This is also a requirement under Australian copyright law. This means you always have to acknowledge the creator of the CC work you are using, as well as provide any relevant copyright information. For many users of CC material, attribution is one of the hardest parts of the process. This information guide is designed to help you ensure you are attributing the creator of a CC licensed work in the best possible way. - Vincent

Flickr currently hosts more than 75 million images that are licensed under a Creative Commons license. Depending on the license, you may use the images on your private or commercial webpage, or make changes to it. Often, you are in a great need for some pictures to freshen up your webpage and would like to include one of these images. If you want to do this, there are quite a lot of steps necessary: Make sure you understood the license correctly Get the correct HTML code for the IMG tag Link the image back to the Flickr photo page Give the author of the image proper credits (Attribution) Link to the Flickr profile of the author Link to the license the image is licensed under The solution With ImageCodr.org, there is no need to do all this manually, you simply enter in the URL of the picture page (as seen in your browser) you are interested in and ImageCodr.org will generate the ready to use HTML code. It will also display a brief and easy license summary, so you don't get in legal... - Vincent
