Oh, when people say my name wrong, I have no problem correcting it. But it sucks when they don't listen. "Here is 'Ann-ick-a'. "Hi, I'm "A-knee-kah', glad to meet you." "So, "Ann-ick-a here..." And I tend to start fuming because if they didn't pick up on that small cue, it's a sure sign they won't pay attention to anything anyone says.

My car was broken into last night at union square SF. I think they used a digital scanner, as there were no indicators of foreceful breakin, and I doubt I left it unlocked. Damage? Stolen subwoofer, ipod, and a few hundred CDs, leather jacket. Could have been worse, I'm not mad, but lesson learned.

There's two ways that I know of that car thieves can use to break in with digital scanners: 1) A device that emits a range of device till cars unlock 2) A thief can be in proximiety and 'record' your signal from your car alarm, then 'repeat' it back with a devices after you leave. I don't have more details, it's what others told me

That sucks! You seem pretty cool about it, which is good. My car was stolen a year ago, but I got it back within an hour thanks to some friends and some connections with the Santa Monica Police. The car was insured, but it was the feeling of being victimized that bothered me. I'm sorry this happen.

About 10 years ago, I had a couple hundred CDs lifted out of a locked car trunk. Was parked off of Melrose Ave. The lock wasn't forced.

Having lived and worked in an urban environment, I've learned to hide anything of perceived value out of sight and to make better parking choices. Other than that, there isn't much one can do. Things are just things. It's that feeling of having been violated, that stings. I'm sorry to read that someone did something to wrong a person who does so much for others.

I've always loved visiting Union Square. But I once walked unscathed through a whole area in SF which I was later told was a bit risky, then arrived in Union Square and missed by inches being brained by a bottle hurled (at me? at life in general?) by an evidently less than happy chap half-reclining in the entrance to an unused shopfront.

Back in the late '80s in NYC, I had my car broken into weekly. I lost so much stuff but the thing that still burns is losing my late dad's custom leather racing suit. I loved that suit and wore it when I had a motorcycle. It's the sentimental stuff that is hard to get over. Sorry to hear...

I'm sorry to hear that your car was broken into. I know it's "just stuff", but I always hated the feeling of MY space being violated whenever my car was broken into. My old Huyndai was broken into quite often (even in so-called safe parking places) that I just didn't keep anything of value/interest in it. They still tried to break into it...I think they just used it for practice, really. :-(

So sorry that happened to you, Jeremiah. Were all those things in clear view? Lots of times the thieves won't bother if they see nothing in the car. That's why SF police recommend that you leave nothing visible in the car -- not even a pair of sunglasses.

I think its more of a meta-feed reader in a microscale. It picks up on the feeds of others, who in turn are reading the news rss feeds, thus meta. It's also on a microscale because, as mentioned before it's not real time, it's only the headlines with no descriptions and it still connects to the echo chamber as opposed to outside world.

No. It is a social feed aggregator with filters. It's limited in that you can read feeds of existing FriendFeed users, groups, or external feeds by creating "Imaginary Friends". However, Imaginary Friends is a rather cumbersome way to add external feeds. No facility exists for easily adding a list of feeds such as by importing an OPML file.

It's interesting to see everyone who says it's not a feed reader. It most definitely is. You can subscribe to RSS feeds here. So it is defacto a feed reader. Now, is it a good one? Not if you want more than headlines. If you want full text Google Reader or other readers are much better.

I think Google Reader is moving more toward a FriendFeed model with all of the Share and Comment features they have been adding, but they are fundamentally different because there is no post feature with any RSS reader.

As i said elsewhere, Google Reader is my favorite feed reader because i can mark things as read/unread, so i don't miss anything. FF will never get this feature because the goal in FF is to go back to items you liked or commented. On Greader, once you've read it, you don't go back. As a consequence, Greader will remain my favorite feed reader.

With Google Reader shortcuts, i can skip very quickly between many items so I can scan much more information efficiently. However, on Greader you've to make a high selection of good feeds you really want to read fequently. Otherwise, it becomes evil!

For me, yes. At least in part. I recently created a News group and added a few news feeds to it (techmeme etc). I then switched on desktop notifications for this group so I effectively now have a real time feed reader / news ticker.

Jamie, I don't think it is worth. With this system you don't enjoy the FF community (i guess nobody "like" your entries or comment them so that you don't see what's important). Moreover you don't have benefit from Greader shortcuts and read/unread status.

Stanislas - I think you misinterpreted me. I don't add the news feeds to my profile - I subscribe to them as they are already on FF. So for high volume RSS feeds like TechMeme, TechCrunch and so on I just view them as real time notifications. I don't need them piling up as unread items in Google Reader, which I use solely for low volume, high quality feeds where I need to see every item (daring fireball, carnage4life, codinghorror etc)

FriendFeed functions like a feed reader in that it gets (most of) its content from other sources. I don't believe it stores copies of the results (would it even be authorized to do so??) so I don't see how it could ever provide search capability. Big difference from TW which has its own content DB

Chris, I agree! Friendfeed is more of social feed aggregator than a reader. Google Reader is a good reader, but unlike Friendfeed, it doesn't (yet) allow you to share a set of feeds by default. You must explicitly share each item. It also doesn't appear to make comments public.

If it is a feed reader, it sucks. There's no way to view the content of the RSS feed items. I have to click each and every story to read it. Headlines only? No thanks. I'd say no, because compared to Google Reader, Bloglines, NetNewsWire, FeedDemon, it fails as a feed reader.

As mentioned earlier today, Twitter seems to have capped your ability to follow at 2,000 people, which just so happens to be exactly where I am. The goal, in theory, is to stop marketing-oriented spammers, but it could be another way to reduce stress on the system. So what should I do now, delete "less favored" people, or wait for Twitter to figure this out?

I wouldn't have even guessed there are 2000 interesting people in the world </cynicism>, but what fascinate me is that i'm following like 83 people and only about 14 of them tweet regularly. I can assume most of those 2000 do not tweet regularly. Add in the fact that I'm a WAHM to two toddlers, and do other stuff, there'd be a lot of stuff I'd miss.

It seems to me that it's reasonable to cap the number one follows to 1,000 or 2,000. On the flipside, one would clearly like to enable a very high number of followers. With respect to bi-directional connections, the real number should max at 1,000 to 2,000...

I like the new limit. I cannot see how anyone would be able to legitimately follow (and pay attention to) more than 2,000 people. Frankly, even that limit seems higher than it needs to be. If it helps keep Twitter a little more stable, go for it.

Couple thoughts: the limit impacts the ability to use the service as a direct message router -- for some people. It also reinforces the need for dectralized microblogging -- so if you want exceed the limits you can do so on your own infrastructure. Lastly, nothing prevents you from following everyone or a subset of people through RSS/feeds.

Are we sure that Twitter has set a 2,000 limit are or we cranking up the rumor mill? I've seen image before with respect to my own account - an account which just reached 1,000 followers today. According the Twitter rep who contacted me, I got - ahem - put in "Twitter Prison" for "Aggressive Following" My ratio of Followers to Following was kinda out of whack - at that time I had only ~800 people following me while I was following ~2,800 - They suspended my ability to follow more people. I removed 2K.

Jason: For a entrepreneur/VC/angel networker, it would be very easy to hit 2,000 contacts (assuming you used Twitter like a rolodex). From one networking meeting, I might pick up 0-100+ business cards (more at conferences), and during a heavy season I could be doing 7-10 meetings/week. As a angel, I might want to follow 5,000-10,000+ projects/people. Anyone might have a really good project 2-10+ years down the pipe... I've got cartons/boxes of 3-ring binders of business cards in plastic sheets.

I use Twitter as both a professional development tool (following people who say useful and interesting things abt health / edtech / social media / libraries ...), a personal tool (friends and folk who are amusing), and a reference tool (following a lot of news streams and information resources). You can hit 2000 fast. A friend says that people are imagining new ways in which Twitter could be used, but Twitter seems bound and determined to force them back into some small box of how it "ought" to be.

I would happily follow more than 2000 people, heck I am almost there. And I don't need to see every message. With Tweetdeck it's manageable. I see some Friendfeed users here have thousands to tens of thousands of subscriptions, should we also say it's good to have a cap here? No, please no.
