Thanks, Simon, Joelle. - Kol Tregaskes
as you can see I'm a PC gamer, unlike you peeps... my last console was a gamecube and after that was stolen I stuck to PCs (yup, they left the PCs and the NAS, stole the laptops console phones and mp3 player) - Iphigenie
If I go by my wishlist I'll be playing on my PC a lot more than my Xbox in the future. Although I've not got a PS3 my PS3 games wish list is growing and growing. It's getting some decent games now, shame the prices is still a little too high. Hopefully they'll be some sales in the New Year. - Kol Tregaskes
I have 6 boxes of PC games, and now so many in electronic only form. I cant really justify buying new ones until I replay some of the barely played ones... If I add consoles to the mix again it'll just reach incredibly wasteful proportions - Iphigenie
Hehe, I've not played anything besides SIms 3 on the PC for many years. I've got a load of demos to play: http://ff.im/9Y9Z3 and will definitely get back into it when I get a new gfx card (currently one is knackered :-(). - Kol Tregaskes
I used to really follow what was going on, in mainstream and indie, play loads of demos, keep a whole site of news which others followed to find the hidden gems etc. Then at some point it lost its magic. Partly I did several years in a startup with too much work and no time for play. Too many games promised lots and delivered shiny but unimaginative games - too much focus on super duper... more... - Iphigenie
sorry, that was my cranky old lady moment hijacking your thread - Iphigenie
LOL, no worries, Joelle. :-) I have started following the likes of GameSpot UK, Edge and MCV/Develop (industry papers). - Kol Tregaskes
Clark, it's one thing signing up, it's another continuing to use them. I try at most things to see what they are like, only about 5% are regularly used thereafter. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

Kol, twitter does IM again? I wrote im@twitterspy.org which is about where twitter was when I first started. You can do most things you'd do on twitter (post, follow, leave, search) and some things you can't (track, etc..) - Dustin Sallings
Shame there is no version of Gtalk for my Nokia! :-( - Kol Tregaskes
Dustin, ah OK, just it's offline. I use Hellotxt anyway. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Twitter's IM has been offline for well over a year. I wrote twitterspy because that was the useful part of twitter for me (and it's over a year old now). Try out im@twitterspy.org if just for track. That's where I find a good lot of information. - Dustin Sallings
There's always the ProcessOne Twitter/XMPP gateway. I can't remember the URL at the moment, though. - Tyson Key
The ProcessOne gateway came out about six months after twitterspy (open source) and still doesn't do much of what twitterspy does, much less better. A few of them came out after mine. OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals... - Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like. - Cyrus Lendvay

Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!! - Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine! - Micah
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments).. - Chris Myles
1.78 (8529/4782) - Micah
Likes are down relative to comments, which matches my much lower frequency of liking. I'm a more selective liker than ever. - Micah
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience. - Micah
383/372 - Ashish
'Just clicking "Like" seems too easy' — Jason, that's because you're from the Chatty-ite tribe :) - Micah

wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff) - chaz2b

Thanks, Bren. - Micah
Thank you, Alex :) - Micah
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while... - Bren
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically. - Micah
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better. - Bren
Thanks, Sarah, Tutivillus. - Micah

"No big surprise, I have a unique name: Michael Geoghegan (MG). Given proper spelling, I am the #1 Google result. However, it turns out there is another popular MG, he is CEO of HSBC, one of the world’s largest banking companies. He has an entire P.R. department at his disposal, but little old me is still the #1 organic search result. Apparently HSBC is not good about allowing consumer feedback. I on the other hand, am accessible which means I get much of the venom aimed at HSBC via email and phone calls including the monthly death threat. Here is today’s winner: CADCYG@Gmail.com BILL wrote: F**K OFF YOU BASTARD, YOU TRY TO SUE ME THROUGH YOUR ASSH*LE COMPANY OF HBSC AGAIN I WILL PERSONALLY HUNT YOU DOWN AND MAKE DAMN SURE YOU CAN’T RIDE ANY OF YOUR SH*T AGAIN. Scoble, Alex Scoble
Do you pronounce sudo as sue-doo or sue-doe or su-su-sudio?
I pronounce it as sue-doe. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I pronounce it "Run as Administrator" - Jemm
sue-doe - rønin
I started pronouncing it su-su-sudio somewhere in the 80's - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
That's awesome, Marco, hehe. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Anyone else? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
i pronouce it as "root" :P - imabonehead
I don't say that out loud. - John (bird whisperer)
I've never said that word in my life. - Derrick
I say su-doe. Jeff says sue-doo. It's a common debate here. - Rochelle
sue-doe - DB, Lil LB's Dad
I <3 you Derrick. May you always remain a sudo virgin. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Is this a question for Linux nerds? Or a surreptitious request for spelling correction? - Bren from iPhone
I'll try my best. - Derrick
It's like playdough but instead of playing you sue so it's more adult sounding. - Todd Hoff
LOL, Bren, not just for Linux nerds. UNIX nerds can participate too. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Coolio. - Bren from iPhone
I have a good one, but it is quite misogynist. - Julian
Sue doo - Victor Ganata
Oh well, Victor, we had to have something to argue about. :D Other than compulsory voting that is, hehe. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Another sue-doo here, as well. Used to be sue-doe for a short time, till I learned what it actually stood for, then sue-doo made more sense. - April Russo (FForever!)
I think that saying it like pseudo makes more sense since it allows you to act as pseudo root. Of course this means that the original creators had such a sense of humor, but they may not have. I just can't say sue doo after hearing every other UNIX/Linux admin I've ever known for the last 20 years call it sudoe. I hadn't heard sue doo used until yesterday and it struck me as such a comical way to say it that I started this thread in multiple places. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I don't know how true this is, but the etymology Wikipedia presents is that it's from 'su' and the verb 'do' because it lets you do things as the superuser. I think this is supported by the fact that the config file is /etc/sudoers, i.e., "su doers" which basically lists the users who can do things as the superuser. - Victor Ganata
Yes, that appears to be true, but it's not nearly as neat plus it makes it sound too close to doo doo. Anyhow, I think this is one of those things where both are now accepted as proper pronunciation. No need for us to create another internet war, unless you really want to have fun and waste a few minutes of your life doing it. :D - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I think it's also a bit of a slice of life that someone, and I doubt I'm the only one, can go through over 20 years working or living in a space and not be aware of things that happened within that space. So much knowledge is out there that even in a given field we won't encounter most of it. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
"Sue-doe" - Tyson Key
Sue-DOH! - Eivind
Heh, I guess Eivind's is what Homer Simpson would say after he just realized he had typed sudo rm -rf * while he was in / - Victor Ganata from iPhone
I am on record as having pronounced it "sue-doo." - Julian
Sue-dew make me a sandwich. - Ken Gidley from iPhone
Doe a deer - Eric - Final Countdown
su-su-sudio - Colette
sue-doh - Kevin Johnson

10 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up for FriendFeed
I wish there was a AIR client for FF though. - barl0w
Twhirl works well for FF and it's an AIR client. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Great article. I want to learn more about the dumping the RSS feeder part. You should share some tips with that. Good stuff. - Amani
Love seeing FF through the eyes of someone who's not a traditional techie =) - FFing Enigma
Thanks Bob! - barl0w
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join. - Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :) - Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff - Demetri Mouratis
great piece! - mashable
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it? - FFing Enigma
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped! - Molly Nichelson from twhirl
Nice post Thomas. - Paul Wade
TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such... - Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen. - Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick! - Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2 - Outsanity
Well said, Thomas. :) - Josh Haley
Nice list of reasons, all well thought out. While I'm at it, I wanted to tell you that I really like your new blog design too. - Karoli
Do most folks use FF in Standard or Real-time view mode? - Scott Loftesness
Only ever real-time.. it sits nicely on the second monitor as a Chrome App. - Greg Gannicott
Realtime here... - Chris Gulker
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now. - Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read. - Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. http://thomashawk.com/2006... - Alan Le
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P - Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all - orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me. - Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use Ping.fm so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing? - Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D - Tamar Weinberg
I really liked how you did a post on Flicker - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
All good reasons but #10 is my #1 reason :) - Mark Krynsky
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like. - Amani
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now. - Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-) - Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here. - Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)... - David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF? - Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008. - Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers) - Carlos Ayala
still hard to beat 5 years on for speed - Thomas Power
So true Thomas: people still can't as a majority read dynamic feeds. - Zu from AOD
it gives you an easy key to the way back machine - chaz2b

Image uploads to a Friendfeed post are missing a proper content-header, so when you click the image to see the original size the browser downloads it instead of displaying it in a new tab. Is something up with the FF API that corresponds to its Amazon S3 upload module?
content-type.png
I was about to ask if you had an example of an image directly uploaded to Friendfeed. Then I thought about it. - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
I'm not sure what the bug is conditional upon, yet, but I've only ever observed this problem in the last few days. - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
Thank you! - Meg VMeg
Ben Golub, you're our only hope. - Micah
I was about to inquire about this, glad I'm not the only one with this problem. - Colette
Help us Obi Ben Golubi. - Laura Norvig from iPhone
I thought nobody is touching the code any more. The content type could not have been changed by its own. - ؛ patrick
This is an intentional change. - Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben. What is the reason behind the change? - Melly
It seems broken -- can no longer click on the picture in my FFHound posts to enlarge the image, it just downloads the image instead. (See http://friendfeed.com/zeigen... and click the image.) - Stephen Mack
Ben, thank you for the quick response. Was the change to cut down on hot-linking? - Micah
It's actually a site security improvement to keep us all safe :) - Benjamin Golub
Ahhh, ixnay ethay executables way. *nodding* - Micah
Heh, and I was thinking about posting a regression bug to Opera. Thank you. - Michael W. May
Well, I threw caution to the wind, so here's a browser extension I wrote to view a full size image in a new tab: http://friendfeed.com/fftools... - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
@glenc, Ben is from FF. Read his comments. - ؛ patrick
While I understand that this is an "intentional change" to "keep us all safe", is there a reference for exactly the problem this is meant to solve is? I'm sure I can make an educated guess, but I'd rather understand it more fully. - Andy Bakun
Still broken... - Mitchell Tsai
No one has a reference for exactly the problem this change was meant to solve, for our safety? - Andy Bakun
It really sounds like "It's not a bug, it's a feature" :) - Yusuf Arslan
And I can accept that, if I knew what the feature actually was. - Andy Bakun
Security features. - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
thanks for explaining this odd behaviour. maybe you should report to..facebook staff - marco barsotti
Marco, Benjamin Golub is the FB Staff that is care taking the FF website. - Me
One solution is to use Opera to browse friendfeed (it leaves you the choice to open the file anyway). And that fits well, a dying social network on a dying browser. - StM
Any clue as to what I can search for to find out what the exact attack we're being protected from is? - Andy Bakun
Andy, and for all we know the attacks could have been observed against Facebook's interface and Ben et al saw that Friendfeed simply had the same vulnerability. - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
The care taking of this site by Ben is well appreciated for those who still love this service. - Eric - Final Countdown
I remember a while ago someone posted an animated gif which was apparently coming from an external host and my (and some other people's) anti virus system started showing that as a treat. The worse part is that, there are many Iranian activists here and for the Ciber Army of Islamic Republic this was the easiest way to find their IP's. We have chosen FF because it's the most free and secure environment in the net. FF didn't do anything about the spammers, at least this was a good move. - ؛ patrick
Looks like some old images don't need a download any more. - ؛ patrick
What's interesting is it's only for new posts media. All the old posts, prior to the update, still work fine. - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
I'm about 95% positive it was due to issues related to this. http://ff.im/1fCf33 - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
Jimminy, your profile is private, so I can't see your point. - samet
it's like that since many months. For some reason, if you browse from the iPad pictures gets displayed properly. - marco barsotti
Scoble, Alex Scoble
Apparently Microsoft can't count. The Xbox One is the THIRD generation of Xbox. LOL
"One" as in the "One Ring to rule them all." Enjoy being bound in the dark etc, found, etc. - Soup in a TARDIS
Well, consider that the iPhone went from the 1st generation to the 3G and the iPad went from 2 to "New", and that Mac OS has been stuck at version 10 for more than a decade, and it's clear that innumeracy is rampant in the tech sector :) - Victor Ganata
I am surprised it's not XBox Ultimate Edition, to be honest. - Victor Ganata
To get smaller, they'd probably need to invent a revolutionary, new cooling system, or figure out how to make GPUs that don't generate oven-like temperatures. Or try to force people to accept that you really don't need that many polygons. - Victor Ganata
They said it'd be quiet, which further constrains cooling. - Andrew C (✔) from Android
They'd also probably have to do away with the optical drive, which would then probably reintroduce the issue of requiring an always-on Internet connection (which they've confirmed is not required with the XboxOne - it will require an Internet connection, but will still work if the net connection is out-of-commission for a while) - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Also sounds like they didn't bother with backwards compatibility for DVD based Xbox 360 games. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Or online games you have purchased - Shevonne
Yeah, Shevonne, I think you are right, but I also think that with the online stuff they can possibly translate ownership from old platform to new for any online titles that get rewritten. Not that they will do this, just that it's possible. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I was thinking that it could be possible as well, but it seems due to the new hardware architecture...maybe the online games were created using the old one so it won't transfer? Someone know? - Shevonne
I assume that the PS4 will have the same issue. - Shevonne
They could always recompile the old games if a software emulation system isn't possible. But it's still noticeable how they didn't even mention it. Used to be backwards compatibility was a key feature (at least at console launches), or if it was left out, they at least had to address it. - Andrew C (✔)
Yeah, I'm certain Microsoft (and Sony) would rather that developers port their games to the new platform. - Victor Ganata
Yep, and it would still be possible for Microsoft to swing the licenses to the ports. Unfortunately, for the bean counters, there's little financial reason to do so. The number of sales that good will creates is much harder to count. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
IMHO cross compiling always has, and always will, suck big time - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
It's got to be better than emulation, though, performance wise, even if the XBox One is way more powerful than the XBox 360. - Victor Ganata
That depends on the game, but yes, in general that's true, Victor. Jeff, I believe that a lot of modern games are developed chiefly for one console (I think EA mostly develops first for PS3) and then ported to the Xbox. It seems to work well. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
should be interesting to watch now that both platforms will be x86 based, instead of totally different core architectures - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
These days they're usually not ported after the fact, they're usually developed on the dev team's own abstraction layer (or sometimes licensed middleware) over PS3 and 360. - Andrew C (✔)
Yeah, I know that Square Enix uses Crystal Tools to develop games for PS3, XBox 360, Windows, and the Wii. - Victor Ganata
Yes, Sony is doing the same thing with PS4. Regarding MS transferring the licenses, if Windows Phone 7-> Windows Phone 8 is any indication, some games will, but others won't (I was able to download new version of Fruit Ninja when I switched phones, but had to buy new copies of my Angry Birds games) - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
One red ring to rule them all. (a correction to the first comment) I wonder how they will compare to the original XBox, as web servers. - April Russo (FForever!)

Does that really what atheist extremists do ? Talk about space, aliens or parallel worlds and stuff ? or this is clearly a manipulation ? and Hey check out PKK please :) The idea behind this organization is practically based on marksism & leninism so that makes them atheist as well, right ? correct me if I'm wrong. So what they do? They bomb and kill innocent people in Turkey , does not even matter if they are babies, youngsters or women. - mcd
Seems if this was a equal opportunity parody, the Aethists would be bombing nativity scenes and Christmas trees ;) - Johnny from iPhone

Atheists are too busy doing important things like scrubbing blessings off of highways. - Akiva
Rene, PKK does not represent all Kurdish community in Turkey and yes, most of the kurdish people are not atheist, I agree with that and I sort of agree with the second part too, the way those govs threated kurdish people was all wrong. However, kurdish people is not my main point here, what I was trying to say and honestly I admit it seems that I am not intellectual enough to do that... more... - mcd
