Senate Is One Vote Away From Passing Health Bill : NPR
"December 23, 2009 The Senate is set to pass a landmark health bill early Thursday morning that would bring President Obama and Democrats a step closer to the most sweeping change in the nation's health system since Medicare was created more than four decades ago. Despite unflinching Republican opposition and late carping by liberals that compromises to forge a 60-vote bloc went too far, Senate Democrats closed ranks behind legislation that would expand coverage to tens of millions of Americans, restrict the ability of private insurers to deny coverage and eventually trim the nation's budget deficit. Senators voted 60-39 Wednesday to end debate on the health bill, clearing the way for the last vote on final passage, now set for 7 a.m. Thursday. Only a majority of 51 votes is needed to pass the bill, which isn't in doubt. Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), chairman of the Finance Committee, declared, "It is now only hours until this Senate will pass meaningful health care reform." President Obama... more... - Wallace from Bookmarklet

I have a problem with Google Reader. I star a lot of interesting articles (thus marking them read) and forget about them. Why? Because it doesn't show how many of my starred items are really unread. And because I'm lazy.
After you star an item, click also "mark as unread". I have just tried this and the item shows up unread in "Starred items". There is also an unread count! - George Moga
Yes, that's what I do, but I'd rather have the starred items show how many are unread like this: Starred Items (12) - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Gmail also refuses to show an unread count for starred items... interesting. - George Moga
I often tag items 'interesting' and then review that tag later. Auto fill speeds that up a bit. - Wallace
I was marking items as read manually until I noticed that the stats weren't reporting any of them as read. It's annoying trying to keep something unread now. - Simon Curran

I can't access Friendfeed directly anymore. I have to go to Facebook, to the applications page and use their link to my Friendfeed page. After that ( for a short while ) I can access my Friendfeed page normally. Does this indicate that I have been suspended from Friendfeed, or perhaps been hacked? I find it odd that I must visit Facebook first.
and that link brings you here...hmm... this is getting really weird. - Wallace

Epic Win: News Corp Likely To Remove Content From Google
Smart move (maybe) - if Google is paying Twitter to get their content, why shouldn't Google be paying others as well? News Corp is a big entity - is it a loss for Google to lose all that content or a loss for News Corp? - Jesse Stay from Bookmarklet
Since News Corp suck at reporting and Murdoch is a greedy bastard, I say 'Good bloody riddance' - Mo Kargas
I know a whole lotta conservatives that will still bypass Google to get the content - Jesse Stay
Not to mention MySpace users - however, will MySpace users revolt now that their pages can't be indexed (if this goes through)? - Jesse Stay
*bookmark* - Micah Wittman
Also makes me wonder what News Corp is doing with MySpace now - what do they have up their sleeves? - Jesse Stay
Imagine if they too set up a deal with Twitter... - Jesse Stay
to search content, that is - Jesse Stay
Good, it would save me the trouble of having to look to see if something comes from Murdoch's entities. I doubt this will actually happen, though. - Rob Haas
Sorry but most people won't even realize that News Corp content is missing. People will search and they'll find other sites. Sorry, the unibrow of the web wins. - AJ Kohn
So if I link to a News Corp article via Twitter... will that tweet not be searchable? - Johnny Worthington from iPhone
Johnny, they can block Google spider from news corp sites but twitter will still be indexed as usual. - Amit Morson
Two Words... DON'T CARE - CW™
Would be a good move if News Corp carried ALL the news (sorry for allcaps). But there are plenty of others wanting for Google love. - Mike Reynolds
When Murdoch and his kind get together to set a price, the Government will step in to stop what is obvious price fixing. His threat is hollow, they won't set a price. - Wallace
Rupert must have been listening to Twist #24. Calacanis suggested he do this. http://thisweekinstartups.com/2009... (somewhere near the end of the episode). - Ken Morley
Calacanis suggested he do this???? It figures.... - Roberto Bonini
He was saying the top ten news oranizations should get together and make an offer to Bing... but that Rupert was likely the only one with the balls to do it; and that Google set a precedent by paying Twitter to index their content. :o) - Ken Morley
Update: Calacanis just posted this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Ken Morley
Genius! epic win for sure! - Jason Calacanis
It's curious that he would say search engine referral visitors aren't desired by advertisers. - Rob Sterling
Only way to make money from your content is to control it from the beginning. News Corp gave it away in several ways on the internet, including allowing Google search to go through their websites. Now that it has happened, if they choose to close off key avenues of information to go out to the users that are now used to getting their information a certain way, will backfire beyond... more... - CW™
One word, "Antitrust." Or is that two words? The bulk Twitter feed apparently was not available to the public or it would have already been searched by Google. If content is available to the public now for free, I don't know how you are going to exclude some member of the public (Google) from accessing that content without creating a legal problem. - Jimmy Walker
I love moves that make old media harder to get to, driving those bastards farther behind their walls, marginalizing their impact even further. It makes just that much more space to allow the future to get her sooner. - Matthew DeVries
I guess new media won't kill old media after all. Old media will simply commit suicide. - Victor Ganata
And Jason just sent around an email newsletter explaining. I'd post it but its Copyrighted. - Roberto Bonini
Why is he "talking about it"? Couldn't a quick change to the robots.txt file (which Google and legitimate search robots obey) exclude Google? - Brian Sullivan
Jason get rich by flux, it doesn't matter to him who wins, as long as there is change, upheaval and instability. Flat markets are Satan that he must fight. It does not surprise me that he advocates points of view that represent a sea change in the industry. It matters not to him whether new media or old media wins, just that there is a decade of fighting. - Matthew DeVries
For sure they want to be' payd as Twitter, the move to exit from the index is a suicide about advertising, by now it guarantee 100000 imp x day (It's in the answer of google to Murdock). - CantorJF from iPhone

14 Are Charged With Insider Trading - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2009...
"Federal prosecutors charged 14 hedge fund employees, lawyers and other investors with trading on insider information on Thursday, in a series of criminal complaints that all appear to be connected to charges already filed against hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam. The broadest of the complaints names seven defendants, including Arthur Cutillo, a lawyer at the prestigious firm of Ropes & Gray, who is accused of offering tips on impending takeovers that the firm worked on. The tips were then passed among a group of lawyers and traders who, in the hopes of avoiding detection, used prepaid cell phones, referred to stocks by fake names and met in cars. Some members of the ring were paid off in cash, according to the complaint." - Wallace from Bookmarklet

Mexico Mayor Announces Death Before Body Is Found - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/aponlin...
"Here he was, being sworn in again as mayor of one of northern Mexico's most exclusive communities, and he had wonderful news to share: ''Black Saldana, who apparently is the one who was asking for my head, was found dead today in Mexico City,'' he told his cheering supporters Saturday in San Pedro Garza Garcia, near Monterrey. The problem was that the barefoot, blindfolded corpse of ''Black Saldana'' -- whose real first name is Hector -- wasn't found for another 3 1/2 hours, according to Mexico City prosecutors. And he wouldn't be identified for two days." - Wallace from Bookmarklet

Buffett to buy Burlington Northern in his biggest deal ever
| Reuters
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc will pay $26 billion to buy out railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp in what the billionaire investor called a bet on the U.S. economy. The deal, Buffett's biggest-ever acquisition, marks new interest in a storied but highly cyclical American industry that has tried to reinvent itself by emphasizing its ability to move goods cheaply and efficiently. The deal is priced at a premium of 31.5 percent over BNSF's closing stock price on Monday and values the railroad at $34 billion. BNSF shares jumped 28 percent in morning trading; other U.S. and Canadian rail companies also rose." - Wallace from Bookmarklet

Nine U.S. banks seized in largest one-day haul
| Reuters
"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. authorities seized nine failed banks on Friday, the most in a single day since the financial crisis began and the latest stark sign that substantial parts of the nation's banking industry are being crippled by bad loans. The move brought the total number of failed banks in 2009 to 115 -- their highest annual level since 1992 -- with analysts expecting more to come. Among the lenders seized Friday was Los Angeles-based California National Bank, in what was the fourth-largest U.S. bank failure this year." - Wallace from Bookmarklet

Explosions kill at least 106 in Baghdad's government center -- latimes.com
"Reporting from Baghdad - Car bombs exploded in Baghdad this morning next to two key government buildings, killing at least 106 people and wounding more than 600. The explosions occurred as political leaders were preparing to meet to try to resolve a fierce dispute that could delay national elections, ranked as pivotal to Iraq's long-term stability. The car bombs, at least one of them a suicide bombing, according to police, blew up by the justice ministry and a Baghdad provincial office, sites separated by one broad city block. The attacks hit the nerve center of Baghdad's national and local governments, shattering windows, sending debris flying and tearing down parts of buildings." - Wallace from Bookmarklet

U.N. experts inspect Iran's new nuclear site

"TEHRAN (Reuters) - A team from the U.N. nuclear watchdog inspected a nuclear site in Iran on Sunday that has heightened Western fears of a covert program to develop atomic bombs, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported. Iran added to global concerns over its nuclear intentions in September by revealing the existence of the site in central Iran after Western spy services penetrated a three-year veil of secrecy. "The inspectors ... visited the facility in central Iran. They are expected to visit the site again," Mehr reported, without giving a source. BBC NEWS | Middle East | Inspectors to visit Iranian plant
"UN inspectors have arrived in Iran where they are due to visit a previously secret nuclear facility. The plant is near the city of Qom and the UN officials are expected to remain in the country for three days. The visit comes as further difficulties are experienced by the major powers trying to agree a deal with Iran over its nuclear programme. Under a new proposed plan, Iran would send its enriched uranium away to be turned into fuel. The inspection will be the first time monitors from the United Nation's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), have been allowed access to the enrichment plant. BBC Tehran correspondent Jon Leyne says Iran announced the existence of the new facility last month, apparently because Western intelligence had already discovered it. Our correspondent says that Iran would have had plenty of time to remove anything that might be incriminating ahead of the inspectors' visit." - Wallace from Bookmarklet
