Question about CC declaration and reader-experience -- I originally placed the CC declaration in footer, but realized reader would have to scroll to see it...
Well, WordPress templates normally put it in the footer--so as a reader (and editor who frequently reuses posts with CC permissions), I'm used to looking there first. But that's just me.
- Walt Crawford
Thanks, Walt! My current compromise is to have it both ways -- the CC image is part of 3 images stacked in the left side bar in a section headed "Attribution Info" (includes univ, academic unit, then CC) -- the sentence declaration is in the footer.
- Mickey Schafer
Okay, another question -- does the CC declaration on the web page cover everything -- text, html, CSS -- or does each component have to be covered separately? My guess is that someone might want to use the text or web page wholesale...can't imagine that the CSS would be that big of a deal, but I'm curious...
- Mickey Schafer
think it is taken to mean original content, to which the author would hold the copyright. most websites and blogs use platforms like wordpress whose code is released under its own license, while a selected license would apply to user-generated material
- Mike Chelen
IANAL but if someone took any part of your site and used it reasonably under the terms of the licence I think you'd struggle to make any claim against them unless you were very clear and very explicit about where it didn't apply. I try to make mine as prominent as possible to people can find it easily.
- Cameron Neylon
What Cam said -- I put my CCZero with my pic, email, RSS and "about" links at the top (right), which is where I'm used to looking for that kind of info on a blog. I also try to make sure all of that is visible without scrolling when the page first loads.
- Bill Hooker
It amazes me that Negroponte can still get "news" coverage for his promises and claims--heck, I think even Steve Jobs would have trouble selling this idea. I find it amusing that Forbes is taking it seriously and, for a change, at least one Wired.com writer is treating it realistically.
- Walt Crawford
Just finished assembling an Office Depot wood 2-drawer file cabinet (17 furniture pieces, 92 other parts)--with no blood shed and minimal cursing. Blew the whole afternoon, but the results are excellent. (So much for DIY for this year...)
I love doing this kind of stuff - Ikea, Staples, Home Depot - bring it on. Yay Walt.
- Candy Schwartz
from twhirl
Ah. Whereas I'm not a DIY person--at all. But we needed a file cabinet, the flatpack fit in the Civic, it was offered at a good price, and it was pretty clearly higher quality than our old file cabinet (which did involve blood and cursing) or OfficeMax' more-expensive "name brand" cabinet. So, clumsy oaf though I am, I saw it through...
- Walt Crawford
I enjoy DIY, but I have a lot more trouble crouching low and/or sitting on the floor to do this sort of thing now. The spirit is willing but the flesh is really inflexible and also often in the way, so to speak
- Mark "DerBingle" J
I cringe when i hear people use the word "gay" as an insult, too. And when you query them they insist no they're not being homophobic. WHAT??!
- 趙美鈴 (Con Wiebrands)
Con: Assume that they don't know what "homophobic" means (it does have four syllables!). After all, if they're busy insulting homosexuals, they're either pretty dumb or pretty ignorant...or just pretty hateful.
- Walt Crawford
I unsubscribed without unsubscribing... I don't know the last time I looked at my Google Reader.
- Joe
Alright, Rothman, was that you putting down your own (lack of) blogging on LISNews? Hey, you only decreased 92% from March-May 2007 to March-May 2009; it's not like a *serious* lack of posting...
- Walt Crawford
Walt- Yes, that was me. Thanks for providing the data to back up my self-criticism.
- David Rothman (☤)
The print newspaper is dying, if not dead. Evidence? The Washington Times will soon be a weekday-only paper, costing $1. Just a few years ago, it cost $1 on Sundays, 25 cents M-Sa. Four times the cost, with just a fraction of the content (not to mention more political bias).
The Washington Post is currently 75 cents on weekdays, and they still have a pulse.
- Julian
That's not evidence. The Times was a heavily-subsidized organ of the Moonies, and the kids don't want to keep subsidizing it. The print newspaper industry is changing and shrinking; I don't believe it's dying. (Ah, Julian, but you know I hate "x is dying/x is dead" stuff.) Now, if you want to say "two-daily-newspaper towns are disappearing," you're right on the money.
- Walt Crawford
Thanks! Keep the suggestions coming!
- Kårín Dalzĭel
No problem: epic.org, freepress.net, and papersplease.org
- Michael R. Bernstein
I'll add: planned parenthood and the MS society. :)
- Kårín Dalzĭel
don't forget your local folks. I recommend the local food pantry, and for those of us in cold climates, the local utility's keep-the-lights-and-heat-on charity.
- D0r0th34
Oh, yes - local homeless shelters also
- Kårín Dalzĭel
What about wikipedia -- would one consider that to be a "charity"?
- Joe
Michael, yes, it is; names vary, but the idea's the same. :) Joe, wikipedia seems like a good option to me.
- D0r0th34
Adding to Dorothea's note: The national organization is Feeding America, formerly Second Harvest; the local affiliates go by a range of names (frequently including "food bank")--and there are probably some that aren't affiliated with the national. They do great work and represent incredible value for donated funds.
- Walt Crawford
Note that food banks typically also take donations of food, not just money.
- Michael R. Bernstein
The nice thing about giving money to the food bank is that the bank can buy to fill in gaps, and they buy wholesale, so they can buy more than you can for the same amount.
- DJF
I'll add a couple more suggestions (altho' nobody's more cost-effective than food banks): Reading for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFBD) and the Nature Conservancy or your local chapter thereof.
- Walt Crawford
I love kiva.org, though it's microlending rather than donating so I suspect not tax-deductable. OTOH when you get your money back you can loan it again to someone else.
- Deborah Fitchett
Don Maclean came on on my way home, and it sounded an awful lot like he actually says "I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck" and not "I was a lonely teenage drunken fuck" as I've been singing for years. uh oh.
I dont know how ive never gotten around to reading that. That's fascinating. Im looking fwd to hearing the song again and identifying all those references.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
My favorite misheard lyric of my own is the song about "my one-eyed girl."
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
Ah, Mondegreens (that's what such mishearings are called)--used to be a staple topic for Jon Carroll, the SF Chron's best columnist.
- Walt Crawford
My favorite is "You might as well face it, you're a dick with a glove..." (re: Robert Palmer's "You might as well face it, you're addicted to love" of course.)
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Where I live (rural Wyoming), I have to have a landline in order to get internet, because DSL is all that's available.
- laura x
yup. Landlines are critical infrastructure. and they're low-tech enough even today that they pretty much ALWAYS work, as long as your central office wasn't the thing that was hit.
- DJF
That's why I keep my landline. I grew up in earthquake country.
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
Yep. Do note, though: You need at least one "plain" phone on the landline--one that doesn't use its own AC (i.e., one with no answering-machine function or caller-ID screen). (DJF: Seems to me most central offices have very substantial battery backup...but I could be wrong.)
- Walt Crawford
Walt, the central offices certainly do seem to have backup power. In the 2003 blackout, our boring hardwired phone worked for at least a couple of days after the power failed. But if the central office burns down, your phone won't work regardless.
- DJF
Walt: I've got a 20+ year old phone that requires no AC and has survived more falls (and attacks from toddlers) than you can imagine.
- Stephen Francoeur
Well, yes, if the central office burns down, you're in trouble... Stephen: The handset at my desk is probably almost as old; we picked it up at Radio Shack for next to nothing (Sprint-branded, for some reason), and it's a great secondary handset. With better call quality than our wireless/digital primary handset.
- Walt Crawford
Walt: I do. My sister gave me an old-fashioned, not-electronic, rotary-dial phone years ago. I seldom use it, because it's inconveniently placed (stuff tends to stack up in front of it), but it's ready in case of emergencies. I still have my grandmother's 1960's phone boxed up somewhere, too.
- Betsy (bentley) Vera
In the early '90s, I bought a Western Electric model 500 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...) at a local surplus store. It's a great phone, and had the best sound quality. It's also great for causing blunt force trauma, when that's called for.
- DJF
I was getting ready to post "Does not give one whit about Avatar." as my FB status. I generally avoid movies that I'd need to take Dramamine for.
- Rochelle Rochelle
I want to see Princess and the Frog! And I saw Avatar; it was ok. The ten year old in me really enjoyed it although it's a bit predictable. *shrug*
- Derrick
I went to P&F---liked it very much and would go again
- Abigail
I'm gonna take Mr. 7 on Christmas Eve day, I think. It looks like it could be fun. Also looks like it could be deeply annoying. Anyway, yeah, we are still good.

Is it a librarian thing not to be interested? I'm not at all, either.
- Aurora
i'm not a librarian, but i have alot of librarian friends and both my parents used to teach English at KU in the 60s (my dad worked for the university library there before that).
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I do still love you, but if this relationship is gonna work, we'll need counseling.
- Eric Sizemore
If you don't need noise cancellation, the Sennheiser PX100 folding headphones (on-ear, not in-ear) have very good sound and pack nicely. (That's what I use.) If you need noise reduction, something in-ear would probably be better; sorry, but no experience. (The Sennheisers should cost $49.50.)
- Walt Crawford
Just asked a friend (headphone expert who spends more than I could dream spending on his headphones) about this last week. He recommended Sennheiser 300x for affordable, quality headphones.
- J450N
My son just gave me Sony noise cancelling headphones as a gift - under $40! A few reviews rate them as the best noise cancelling headphones under $50. http://bit.ly/69wpXF I'm sure they're not as good as the Bose, but I think they are pretty good.
- steven bell
i think i got my sharper image bose knock-offs for between $35 and $50. i really, really like them and don't know what i'd do without a set of noise cancellers.
- Katie
Katie--the ones I'm seeing on SI require a battery?? Do yours?
- Abigail
Thanks for the recommends coming in so far--I'm happy to make a decent investment..just not bank breaking considering I'm known to lose the occasional headset--hence not Bose...
- Abigail
Yep, 1AAA for the noise-cancelling effect. You can get away without one if you don't want to use the nc.
- Katie
I was just doing a bit of research on over the ear portable headphones. The Sennheiser PX100/PX200 are good. I ended up ordering the Koss PortaPro. The Koss KSC75 gets a lot of good reviews too.
- Rodfather
I like Porta Pros, but for an airplane ride, if you can tolerate in-ear earphones, I think those are way better than active noise cancellation, not that I've tried active cancellers. Senn cx300s or something else good. (I don't like to recommend Sony because of the "Sony timer"; specifically the Fontopia earphones I had where the headphone cable insulation was apparently made to dissolve on contact with water.)
- Andrew C
Really interesting stats! We are noticing similar trends at my library. We just started filtering our Analytics stats by IP range - we can see use within the library, outside the library but still on campus, and off campus. It's actually a very small percentage of use from within the library, yet that's where we focus most of our services.
- Jen
you gonna publish that, Jen? YOU SHOULD.
- D0r0th34
Hmmm. Never considered that, but might be an interesting angle. Thanks!
- Jen
I agree with Dorothea on this: It's an excellent discussion, and I believe it's worth publishing.
- Walt Crawford
Jen, how are you doing the filtering? I'm still learning Analytics and I can only see methods to include or exclude IP traffic at the collection level and I don't want to exclude any data at this stage. Curious, I just checked that about 65% of our web traffic comes from the University's 'network' (as an Internet service provider)
- mita
We tried to split out on- vs off-campus and in- vs out of- library and weren't successful, so I'd be interested in hearing how you did it.
- DJF
Me too! We filter out our library staff/faculty IP addresses, but that's because it's the number ACRL wants. On another note: This is an _AWESOME_ presentation, full of goodness.
- Jason Griffey
do I sense a coauthorship in the process of happening? :) Jason, meet Jen; she is awesome. Jen, meet Jason; he is awesome.
- D0r0th34
great set of stats and analysis! Wondering re: subject guides (slides 30-32): what is difference b/t subject pgs & research guides?Isn't subject page itself a sort of guide and might be why users aren't then clicking on the formally labeled research guides? Plus, users scan pages left to right so links on right will almost always get less traffic.
- Dana Longley
At one point, a 'resource resource page' was just indexes while a 'subject research guide' was a traditional library guide, with lists of encyclopedias, indexes, websites, etc. But now many 'resource' pages have evolved to contain links to ebooks, dictionaries, course presentations etc. IMHO, they are combining into one thing. Location and language are admittedly important. I'm planning to do a stats round-up on our subject pages/guides early next year.
- mita
Like Jason, we started filtering stats after seeing that ACRL stats asked for it. Because of the way our Analytics are set-up, we had to have our campus IT guy write the filters, but they are just by IP. I'm on the road for the next few weeks, but will definitely want to talk to you all more about this.
- Jen
NTS pull mine down and show mita (and everyone else, too)

I'm working monday through thursday dayshifts.
- Beau Liening
My schedule is like Holly's. Our library in-service day is on Tuesday. For the most part, I'll be "working" Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday the archives is open, and I know at least one person is probably coming.
- Laura B.
I am working Mon, Wed and Thursday. Had a personal day I needed to take before the end of the year.
- aden
I'm "working from home" *cough* on Monday... off until the 4th after that.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
Working Monday if the snow clears, otherwise a personal day. Working Tues-Weds. Unpaid furlough day Thurs, off Christmas. Furlough day New Years Eve. yay.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Assuming the snow goes away before Wednesday, I'm supposed to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but then I'm off until Jan 4. My wife is supposed to work Monday, Tuesday and half a day Wednesday.

I'm working five hours each day Monday to Thursday, Christmas Day off and then four hours on Boxing Day (wooo double time and a half)
- Bryce Roney
Working full days Mon/Tues, a half day Wed, off for Christmas Eve and Christmas, as well as the weekend. Then it's the same for the following week (though I was originally going to have it off), with days off on New Years Eve and New Years Day.

I do and am grateful....at least, I hope I get to work. ;)

i do! monday through wednesday. it's ok, though, as i expect it to be very quiet, so i should be able to finish a project i've been dragging my feet on.

At work! And not a single customer for the first hour. :( Gonna be a long day.

Tossing out for feedback: Google Alerts points me to a post (on a blog I don't normally read) where someone's talking about doing something "if Walt Crawford could be talked into it." (This also, apparently, was said in a podcast.) The post is dated 12/7/09. It is now 12/20/09. No attempt whatsoever has been made to contact me about "it."
So the question is, do I simply ignore this post entirely? (I don't even understand what the "it" proposed is well enough to have an opinion at this point.)
- Walt Crawford
Sir: They absolutely know how to find me. Dorothea: I'm a little put off by something involving "talking me into" doing something, announced publicly, with no effort to contact me before or after saying that. (Now disappearing for an hour or two, will check back later.)
- Walt Crawford
well, okay, so they weren't politic about it; does that mean you're going to write off an opportunity?
- D0r0th34
Given who posted it, I would say NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS. But that's me.
- s t e v e
ah. I have no idea who posted it. :) but I trust Steve's instincts.
- D0r0th34
Steve: That's a VERY useful comment. Particularly since it resonates with a little interior voice... Thanks! (Dorothea: If it had seemed like a clear-cut opportunity, I would have jumped on it. It didn't have that feel...)
- Walt Crawford
Ah, David, you'll really need to read the current (and final) disContent column (in the December EContent), "Is Dead Isn't Dead--But Maybe It Should Be."
- Walt Crawford
"Is Dead Isn't Dead--But Maybe It Should Be." is dead.

Getting ready to try Dr. Bronner's Hemp Almond wash...we'll see how it goes though the baking soda works great too I just love the smell of sweet almond.

Lush Trichomania shampoo, usually tresemme conditioner because I bought a great big bottle.
- ÉllbeeÇee
Nioxin. Sounds like a clinical drug and smells minty!

- Jenthemum
None. My hair is so short, it never needs more than a good rinsing. Helps keep the natural hair oils balanced as well.

Whatever Mum buys. Currently she's on a Tresemmé kick. Probably because it was half-price at the store the other week, I think we have enough bottles to last us through a nuclear apocalypse. We might not be able to eat but at least well have thick, luxurious, run-your-fingers-through-it hair
- Bryce Roney
My wife & I both use Biolage Normalizing--after many years of using separate shampoos, this one works great for both of us. She uses a Biolage conditioner; I don't need a conditioner.
- Walt Crawford
Pantene Pro-V...started in high school. Occasionally switch to give my hair a change but haven't found anything else that worked as well. Usually the smooth and sleek
- Abigail
Garnier Fructise for normal hair. Occasionally, I'll use a random Target shampoo to clarify it, but that's infrequent. Brandon uses some Tea Tree Oil thing I got him at Whole Foods, 'cause his scalp is picky.
- ~Courtney F.
Some brand (change a lot), but I've been heavily considering giving the baking soda & vinegar thing a try.

Right now, I have Suave I think. I need to find something fragrance/chemical free because I super sensitive skin.
- tab thinks you're awesome
is pureology good? i can get that cheap, but never have used it myself
- Morgan Haley
I use Aveda, it's just about one of the few 'regular' brands that don't make my scalp super unhappy. I've also had really good luck with all of the Lush shampoos, just not when I dye my hair.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo and Conditioner, alternating with Neutragena T-Gel.
- Jason Huebel
I generally use Sunsilk. I got Suave Professionals the last time I got shampoo and conditioner, but I've not been impressed with it. I'll be switching back to Sunsilk when I run out.
- Curtiss Grymala
Griffin Remedy. No parabens, no petrochemicals, no SLS, and it smells heavenly.

Just tried Reflow in Adobe Reader 9 on a special issue of Cites & Insights (in PDF form)...well, if you don'tmindallthewordsrunningtogether, it works great. Also tried read aloud...which could, for sure, be worse.
Truly mysterious. Reflow converted from two columns to one, respected headings...but caused all the blanks to disappear or become so minimal they weren't visible.
- Walt Crawford
Followup: Turns out if I "Save as PDF" I get bookmarks in the PDF, and it reflows just fine (well, "just fine" may be an exaggeration, but it reflows readably). If I "Print" using a PDF printer (which I've been doing), no bookmarks (which has been true for C&I lately) and the reflow swallows spaces. OK, so from now on I'll "save as PDF."
- Walt Crawford
The Reader "read aloud" is just...strange. Word by word, pronounces em dashes as "da," always pronounces homonyms the same way, totally context-free...but understandable. (A fairly pleasant woman's voice.)
- Walt Crawford
Heh. Even regular books dont cost more than $10 unless they're hardback. nice try, though.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Warmaiden: Is that true? I thought most trade paperbacks were more than $10, although most mass-market paperbacks may be less.
- Walt Crawford
Mass markets tend to be under $10. I can get a lot of trade paperbacks on amazon for less then $10. Those academic books, though, cost a lot. *looks at Routledge's Children's Literary Studies series containing books over $90 and decides that she could never in good conscience ask students to buy one for a children's lit class*

"With a population of nearly a quarter-million people, this city could soon be the largest in the nation without a single bookseller."
- Sir Shuping
from Bookmarklet
Laredo isn't near a big city where someone could drive to a bookstore, it IS the big city. It's frightening to be so disconnected. (Of course the only B. Dalton's I've ever been in where very small and in malls.)
- Jeff Scott
Meh. A town will have the bookstores it deserves. It's not like they don't have Amazon in Laredo.
- s t e v e
It's great that they have Amazon, but one of the benefits of a bookstore is being able to wander around and find new authors and to me its more difficult to do that online
- Sir Shuping
If there are enough booklovers in Laredo, someone will open a bookstore. (Meanwhile, I'd bet there are booksellers--that is, places that sell books--e.g. Target, Other Large Chains. Not the same as having a good bookstore, to be sure.) A couple of indie bookstores have reopened around here lately; it's not impossible.
- Walt Crawford
It would be interesting to track online book sales for Laredo for the next couple of years. Will they be higher than average for a city of it's size? Will they jump up and stay up? Or will the overall book/literary culture weaken? Or does Laredo already have a weak book culture.
- John Dupuis
Heck do they even read in Texas? *Was born there!
- Tim Keneipp
Tim: I can almost visualize the Austinites preparing appropriate responses...
- Walt Crawford
Heck Walt Austin is not in Texas! They are their own state of mind, mainly not out of it.
- Tim Keneipp
One up: Shopping at Target yesterday, was delighted to find an absence of holiday music. Even more delighted to find an absence of any music. (Might be peculiar to our Target.)
Srsly. Dude. Patent your music-suppressing skillz. You could make a MINT.
- D0r0th34
I'm pretty sure the new supertarget near me doesn't play any music. Also, in the freezer & fridge sections of the grocery the lights in the cases are on motion sensors. I thought it was really neat when I first noticed it.
- ÉllbeeÇee
i think it's all targets they don't play music except in the tv/music area
- Sir Shuping
Polly: Around here, some casual eating places aren't too bad. EllbeeCee: I seem to remember the same from Mountain View, so maybe it is one of the reasons I view Target a lot more fondly than "big-box retailers" in general. Dunno if we could deal with a SuperTarget--VERY big stores give us the urge to go elsewhere. (There was a Safeway in Redwood City that neither of us could stand to shop in; it was just too darn big.)
- Walt Crawford
I've never heard any music in the last several Targets I've been in, in several states. One of many reasons I heart Target.
- Catherine Pellegrino
And one down: Thanks to a link this morning (intended for other purposes), I'm now informed of a huge new set of areas in which I am never, ever, ever expected/allowed to say anything whatsoever. (Not personally, but as one of a certain "type"). Sigh.
Why is it in the "entertainment" section, though?
- DJF
Well, it was media-related, so that doesn't surprise me. Another instance of definitional problems: "Information" doesn't necessarily mean factual or meaningful data.
- Walt Crawford
Anyone still need a Google Wave invite? I got a bunch. You too can get very excited, then try it out, then wonder what it's supposed to do, then get bored with it and forget about it till someone on Twitter mentions it. All this excitement/non-excitement can be yours!
Has anyone gotten an invitation, logged in, done nothing, and then forgotten about it? I mean, I would never do that or anything. But maybe someone else has?
- Joan
Google Wave invites are the Beanie Babies of Library 2.0
- Rochelle Rochelle
Heck, Liam, for the right amount I'd take one. Unless that also required doing something with it... (Rochelle: Are you sure Google Wave invites aren't turning into the AOL CDs of Web 2.0?)
- Walt Crawford
That definitely works, too, Walt. Beanie Babies came to mind because any time I do a house de-clutter I come across at least one cache of BBs, from Miss 16's multi-year BB mania.
- Rochelle Rochelle
Actually, Rochelle, Beanie Babies is better: Highly desired at one point, not so much later on. I don't remember any time that AOL CDs were highly desired...
- Walt Crawford
I have their el-cheapo $19.99 version and love it -- bought one for work and for use with my laptop at home. The cheap model doesn't have the keyboard "resting" place and is not quite so split down the center (I have an earlier model more similar to the one pictured -- cannot connect it to anything anymore but is how I learned to love ergo keyboards). My current model works excellently for me -- typing, accuracy is much better, even with arthritic hands (or perhaps especially b/c of arthritic hands!).
- Mickey Schafer
I have the wireless version, with less of a negative slope, from years ago...and it's absolutely saved me from wrist problems. The only downside: On a regular keyboard, my typing speed goes from 80wpm to maybe 8wpm.
- Walt Crawford
my kids think I'm an idiot when I get onto their computer with its regular keyboard. sigh.
- Mickey Schafer
get an ergo kb for your friends or family pc, then they will like it very quickly, and you won't mind using it when helping with something :D
- Mike Chelen
See-ming: that doesn't include s&h, still a great price for one of the nicest kb around
- Mike Chelen
Walt: wireless would be nice, been eyeing "ergonomic desktop 7000" http://www.newegg.com/Product... because the keyboard looks identical, haven't tried a mouse like that though
- Mike Chelen
Mike: Mine--now something like five years old with many hours a day of my heavy-handed typing--is an older, less glitzy version of that, the MS Wireless Natural Multimedia Keyboard. (The mouse is also less glitzy, but still has two extra left-side thumb buttons, which I mostly don't use.) In any case, a great keyboard.
- Walt Crawford
Do guys ever like "regular" girls? Or do they always have to be tarted and slutted out to hell? I like looking at nice guys, but they can be in sweater vests and bowties, not waxed, shiny, and in speedos.
I do. Maybe I'm jaded from growing up in SoCal. I've always been around those "Hawt Chicks" who, well, *yawn* THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME TO ME. Give me character or unconventional beauty any day!
- Anna Haro
i was attracted to (and still am attracted to) a "normal" girl. she dresses like a guy most of the time (occasionally will wear a 3/4 length skirt or dress) and i think i've seen my wife in full makeup TWICE in 13+ years since we first met. sometimes she wears lipstick if there's a party, otherwise the overwhelming majority of the time she's got nothing on her face. i don't think she's...
- Joe Silence is not Santa
i have always found 'regular' girls in 'everyday attire to be attractive. Anyway, the looks don't necessarily match personality or sexual prowess
- Ian May
I like regular girls. I may lust after the hotties, but give me a nerdy girl any day. I married a nerd. (Don't tell her I admitted it, but her IQ is slightly higher than mine. Mine is 164.)
- Jason Huebel
@Jason: the nerdy girls ARE the hotties! (i married a mathematician.)
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I find emotional warmth attractive, above all. I have to admit, I like a gal who is down-to-earth but, when necessary, can really turn herself out (I have a glam side, too).
- T. Brent, technopeasant
hoho, I like how Anna blames it on SoCal. =)
- Andrew C
That's my experience, Andrew. :-) I grew up in an area where all the girls wanted/tried to look like Pamela Anderson. NO THANKS.
- Anna Haro
I married a librarian, endogamy FTW! Sneak-up hot is so much more fun than self-regarding know-i'm-hot.
- Pete
FWIW, I know a lot of librarians that are tarted and slutted all to hell. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Just sayin' that "librarian" does not necessary equal "regular girl."
- Sarah G.
Indeed not, Sarah, though in my experience the two sets are pretty close. Then again, I haven't been to an AALL conference...
- Pete
And this ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is why I love Derrick so.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
I'd much rather a woman think like a porn star than look like a porn star. I'd much rather see the attractive "regular" women I see naked, but most of them won't let me see them naked, so I make due with the women who will. If that makes sense.
- josh neff, geek at large
I like 'normal' women, but my definition of 'normal' is other peoples' 'weird', or maybe just 'different'. And DERRICK! Don't say you don't like the tarts, I can't count how many times I've seen some oiled-up superhunk* scroll down c/o your feed. You know I aint lyin! *Other then Derricks self portraits.
- Will Higgins™
I'm a jeans, t-shirt, no make-up & ponytail kinda girl, and I'm married, so that means at least one guy does ;o)
- Mellissa Claus
I wouldn't use "regular" to describe myself, but I definitely don't tart or slut more than 1x per 5 years. There are guys who are into that, but in my experience it's a minority of guys. That works, really, because it seems like the majority of women wear makeup, etc.
- Lo
I think most men have a knee-jerk (and I'm using the word "knee" here *very* loosely) response to "tarted up" women, where we are reacting to the symbols and signifiers of "sexy." rather than to the person herself (hence "sex object" and all that). When it comes to "regular" girls, tastes diverge a bit, but I think all but the most deluded and juvenile men also find a certain large segment of the "regular" female population attractive, too.
- s t e v e
Also, Derrick, lemme remind you of some of your previous posts here: the women on FF who get comments on their photos ranging from appreciative to Neanderthal are almost never looking phony, dressed to kill, etc. They are just looking pretty or confident or vulnerable or kind or some other "normal" thing that men respond to (appropriately or not).
- s t e v e
Great Feed. I think regular girls are the best..
- ★ Soner Gönül
Also, D., I too would rather appreciate Josh in his vest and bow tie than oiled up in a Speedo.
- s t e v e
Steve, I think that's a universal feeling. Nobody wants to see me in a Speedo, oiled or otherwise.
- josh neff, geek at large
Hmm. 'Librarians of South Beach; sign, signifier, signiFIED! A post-structural dis-course on sexuality and attraction'
- Pete
Josh, you in a speedo would not be as scary and some speedos I've seen.
- DJF
I love Tina Fey, but when she plays me in the movie of my life, I am going to tell her to gain 30 lbs.
- laura x
The best looking girls wake up looking that way.
- Brad Greer
laura: In Tina Fey's defense, it's possible that she doesn't really have a choice. My wife (yes, a librarian; yes, smarter than I am; yes, doesn't own high heels) is 5'10" or 5'11" and weighs 115lb--because that's how her metabolism works. [Addendum: I don't follow celebrity news much OR read the NYTimes, so didn't realize that Fey admitted losing 30lbs deliberately--see laura x below.]
- Walt Crawford
What Brad said! Some of the best looking women I have seen have little to no make-up or other enhancements. Keep it simple stupid... ;)
- JA Castillo
A woman who looks like a stripper is probably going to catch my eye, but that's about it and only temporary. We had a party once where we had strippers. I got to film them "backstage" and just kinda hang out with a bunch of naked women. It was pretty awesome, but as we got to talking, I started to forget to stare at their junk.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I personally prefer regular girls. Yeah sure a lot of slutty girls look good, but at the end of the day I find myself looking more at a regular girl with some nice curves.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I don't know any regular girls. All the women I know are amazing in a lot of different ways.
- DJF
i thought you guys all liked regular girls who "tarted up" for you at home? or if you know that librarian is "tarted up" underneath...?
- Lisa
Oooo, a tarted up librarian? I'm all for that!
- Jason Huebel
I don't know if I like this anti-tarty vein. And whoever was commenting on women's photos on FF and the response they got, um, you're wrong. The "myspace photo" is alive and well on FF. You got it with "vulnerable" doe eyes through teh eyebrows cleavage shots. lol. Do you think the anti-tart sentiment isn't about high maintenance women, but more about a fear of women's sexuality?
- anna sauce
To clarify- men feel safe when women hide their sexiness underneath a cardigan and horned-rim glasses?
- anna sauce
I really doubt it, anna. Men feel safe when women hide their intelligence behind pancake makeup and fuck me pumps is more like it.
- Spidra Webster
Other men, maybe. Smart, strong women are a serious turn-on for me. I like a woman who can stand her ground.
- Jason Huebel
Of course there are exceptions. And probably more here on FF than other places. But as a generalization? yeah.
- Spidra Webster
I wonder if you take a hot woman, who is a librarian, and shows off her curves. Would you guys not be interested because... she has a healthy sense of her own worth? LOL.
- anna sauce
I don't like it when women hide their sexiness or their intelligence. Wearing it on the outside, whether you're in a short skirt & fishnets or a baggy T-shirt & jeans. is really, really, really attractive.
- josh neff, geek at large
I mean, some people are just hot, and not slutty per se, but defnitely have a rack, etc. Like Selma Hayek. Would anyone tell her to take out her contacts and put on a cardigan, so they can marry her... lol. We're putting too much stock in looks.
- anna sauce
It's interesting how many people (mostly guys) say here (and in other similar threads) that they're into women who are smart, practical, and "normal", and not so into the major makeup, flirty, "tarted up" type. However, when a picture is posted here that is like there, there is no shortage of drooling in the comments.
- Rochelle
What's the adage... you f** your mistress, you marry your wife?
- anna sauce
Few things turn me on more than witty repartee, like I'm in a 30s screwball comedy or something.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
Rochelle: On the other hand, there's a whole bunch of us out here who you've never see drool over any picture in the comments, whether it's a "hot" woman or otherwise. Out of a million people on FF, I'm certainly ready to believe there are thousands of "guys" looking for hot pictures to drool over and also thousands of men who prefer women in all their complexities.
- Walt Crawford
Like I said, a "slut" or hot chick or whatever might catch my eye just like an expensive sports car might catch my eye...but that doesn't mean I really want one.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Walt, I'm talking about people I interact with on FF and posts I've seen show up in my feed. I've never encountered you before on FF, so I have no idea what your commenting history is.
- Rochelle
Coming from Montreal, people would often rave about how beautiful Montreal women are... but I've also heard it said that your 'average' Montreal girl (whatever that is) knows how to dress in a way that flatters their particular body type.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I find a woman beautiful based on a range of factors and I do not prejudge them into categories like 'hot girl' and 'normal'.
- Johnny Worthington
WHY ARE WE FORGETTING ABOUT THE MEN IN SWEATER VESTS AND BOW TIES? #furious
- Derrick
Derrick... I can appreciate a well groomed man as well...
- Johnny Worthington
Oh yes, there are men that like intelligent women. Then you end up as the *tech-support gal* .. :)
- Citronella
The thing about "hot" girls is that you can invest hundreds of hours in knowing how to look good to please others (and I'm drawing a distinction from ladies who do it for themselves, like many FF women), but you're still going to be old someday anyway. If you invest that time in knowing stuff, or being entertaining, you'll be the hot one with time.
- Lo
Yes I prefer girls with a healthy dose of fiber.
- Rodfather
This is a tricky question, actually. Obviously, I see where D is going, but I would argue that a girl not being tarted up does not make her "regular." Many of ff's most spectacularly crush-worthy ladies are not tarted up at all, and many of the guys on here notice quite often how fabulous these "regular" girls are. :)
- Bren -- Loves Chrimmuh
Whatever they're wearing, I like intensity in a guy... probably why I like hanging around poets and Highlanders so much.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I much prefer "regular" girls. I can't stand gigantic fake boobs, I'm not one for women with tattoos and trout pouts make my dick run for cover.
- Joey Gibson
Sure, some guys like regular girls. No, plain janes do not get more action nor asked on more dates. (Simple answer). And for some women (whom i admire) the makeup application that makes them look dynamite takes mere minutes, and they can hold a conversation quite easily - so equating makeup/tarted (?) with shallow is just an easy out. tarted up doesnt cancel out your worth as an intelligent human, for either sex. So, ernk to the turn this convo has taken.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I like regular girls. I like slutty girls. but most of all, I like punk rock girls. they punk rock my world.
- Morgan Haley
Im not a tart - I have neither the figure, the wardrobe nor the makeup skills to enhance my looks. But I dont trash those who do. I consider myself pretty regular - plain and chunky, on the higher side of smart. I just think this question (Do guys ever like regular girls") is too much like "do guys ever like chocolate?". The answer is some of them, some of the time, and it all depends on the chocolate.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I like a variety. Give me "vanilla", give me fetish and everything in between.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
lol I also notice tHat in the spectrum of tart vs regular, we've conveniently left out the ugly girl, for whom the only real answer is to have an awesome personality that overrides face (or interesting text that overrides posted pictures).
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
Warmaiden: I agree with you. However, I have seen photos of you wearing make-up, and you've mentioned buying lingerie...
- T. Brent, technopeasant
Dear godz. I like flesh, curves, handles, niches, painted, tanned, alabaster white, smart, simple, ditzy, high heels, bare feet, short skirts, amish dresses, burkas with hint of slutty eye, short, tall, wide, thin, tarty, virginal, ad infintum. But, there has to be some beauty there. Turn-offs - cankles, dirty feet, underarm hair, bad complexions, body odor, or the idea that sex (or our...
- Rev. Dr. W!cKeD Rock
T. brent - this is true. I suppose i didnt think that rated on the Tart Scale :)
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
You know what? I wanted to like this thread. But you're all playing so facilely with stereotypes that don't mean jack shit that it's a pointless conversation. I'm a "regular girl", and a "slut" and a "tart", and a "librarian" -- what the HELL are you actually talking about, other than objectifying women while pretending to be enlightened about it?
- Jenica
Jenica, I think you're absolutely right. I've been trying to make that kind of point--at least it's been in the back of my head--but I've been doing it very, very, very badly.
- josh neff, geek at large
Nice work Jenica. File this under "threads I wish I hadn't posted in"
- s t e v e
I prefer to subjectify women. That is to say: SUBJECT THEM TO MY AWESOMENESS WOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I agree that words have a lot of baggage associated with them, but it'd be pretty hard to have this conversation without words. Is there another word besides "tart" that more adequately expresses the nuances that you feel should be included in such a discussion? Or is it just flat out wrong to talk about women period? (please read that in a non-confrontational tone, I don't mean to fight, just curious & happy to be ignored)
- Lo
"other than objectifying women while pretending to be enlightened about it" - Whedonification, or see also Sorkinification.
- Andrew C
Jenica, what do you find attractive in men? And don't answer with anything that would objectify them.
- Kenton
I don't think we're all playing with the stereotypes; or rather, I don't think we're all playing *along* with the stereotypes. Some of us (OK, me) are tweaking the stereotypes with our responses (except for the being married to a librarian part. Librarians are pretty neat, regardless of where they fall on the sexual attractiveness scale.)
- cecily
Hmmm. Being one who's in an open relationship, and a Kink? I get to deal with all types from all walks in many situations. I'm pretty desensitized to a lot of "normal" turn-ons, so someone who tries to stand out will get my attention - so will someone who tries to blend in. That's why I appreciate the entire spectrum. And yes! I love women who want me to objectify them, literally!
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
I wish to point out that my annual "Why the hell don't LITA IGs tell us what they're planning at conference?" post has a semi-happy ending...as long as you just ignore the multifarious LITA communications channels and go straight to the ALA Midwinter 2010 wiki. It's progress...of a sort.
- Walt Crawford
Sigh. My comment now seems mean-spirited. Nice touch for those who haven't already booked cheap Tuesday flights. I should try to be as positive as possible about ALA's actions. Really I should.
- Walt Crawford
