I didnt really want to add everyone i know on friendfeed to my facebook, i like to keep them seperate as much as i can. but you know what, fuck it http://www.facebook.com/simon... add a note saying you;re from friendfeed if you add me, then i can group everyone up :)
- Simon Wicks
Thanks, Simon. I've not started going through these yet. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm only going to add the people i actually talk to on here. I have a lot less people on my follow list than you, so its a bit easier for me :)
- Simon Wicks
Remember, guys. According to FB, you're only allowed 5000 friends. Spend them wisely.
- James Myatt
As if we weren't before? Were they really that many people here who didn't also have a FB account, even if they didn't list it in their profile? I've been with FB since 2004
- LANjackal
Well, with this news it is pushing me to start using my real name for web services and to kill (or at least slowly stop using) the tomit persona that I have used for many years. Find me here... http://www.facebook.com/ronaldb...
- tomit
FF better figure out how not to destroy themselves (if possible) with this merger. Friendfeed in the FB interface will not work. I think FF really just f*cked themselves.
- Ethan
I'm on Facebook, but I don't have a name in my profile URL (yet; I'm still new...). But if you want it, it's http://www.facebook.com/profile... -- if you friend me, tell me you're from FF.
- Dennis Jernberg
I don't freaking have one because I never wanted to sign up for Facebook. :P Now I find out that through no fault of my own I'm technically a Facebook user? GAH.
- Cheryl Jones
http://facebook.com/alex.covic - I will friend everybody - for those of you concerned with friend/family + privacy = you can create lists (just like ff-groups) to keep FF-users in a different corner;-).
- Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
I do not use it much LOL I just post to it from other sites so to fill up my friends stream, I do get messages and some status in text. Anyone who really wants to add me, use the facebook link on my profile. :o)
- David Gross
www.facebook.com/drodzand you won't see much since I got the privacy settings on max in Facebook. Just another reason why I think Facebook is completely different from friendfeed. I hope they keep friendfeed running because I use both services in diametrically diverse ways.
- David Rodriguez
http://www.facebook.com/kimbers... (I can remember if I commented on this already. I don't see "You" on the list, but I'm tired. So, hopefully, I didn't. If I did, oh well.
- Kimber Scott
Thanks Rob, I had forgotten my username for I always used my email address to login - I found there is a settings > username > change thing that lets you change your username once and then you get a facebook.com/username url!
- TrafficBug
I am thinking about just using my Public Page more. Keep my regular profile for family and coworker data. Follow me here if you want more of the type of posts I do here of Friendfeed. http://www.facebook.com/pages...

"The Volkswagen Microbus is a classic - even to those of us born after its time. Arguably unlike the newly remade Beetle, this remake of a VW classic is remarkably true to the original on the outside - but on the inside it is a bio-diesel hybrid stuffed full of high tech gadgetry and eco-friendly innovations."

Super cool VW Bus making a comeback...
- Walt Ruppar
First of all, I'll cop to wanting one of these. That being said, Jason is right. This is for rich hippies (who probably aren't hippies at all). The VW microbus became the darling of the Flower Power crowd because it was cheap, easy to repair, and big. You could camp in it. Is there a car today that fits this bill?
- Chris Baskind
wow, you can buy an awful lot of pot with $129,000.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't know a self-respecting hippie that would prefer this over a really nice indoor greenhouse. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
@Chris, Most cars today aren't as simple, but with the wealth of knowledge online, it just takes more time. The minivan/SUV can become a camper van with a few mods. They'll never take the place of the VW, but they're an updated version of the 70s panelvan conversions (hopefully without shag carpeting & a disco-ball).
- Steven Cains
Nope: there will never be anything that simple again. That's not all bad: I can't imagine a 1960s VW Minibus would satisfy *any* federal safety standard these days. You're right. A used minivan might be the closest thing.
- Chris Baskind
Very Cool. You can't drive your house but, you can sleep in your Van !!!
- Eric Logan
Very intriguing. How much steel is in that thing? Chris, that would be my next question after fuel consumption: how safe is this thing? And I agree, when we can go back to making transportation that costs less than a small home, we may have achieved something amazing. ;)
- Melanie Reed
However, I have heard (and I'm not remembering where at the moment) that there has been a movement growing of people seeking alternative housing and substituting things like this as the new "mobile" home.
- Melanie Reed
Everyone is loving this! We should have an FF one and use it to travel to all the FFers around the World (like Pea seems to be doing ;-)). Hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
cool idea, kol. the ff-stream of this tour would be alltheawe. just imagine the photos.
- esther ♥ ♫
I've owned 5 VWs, two of which were split window vans. I'd love to have another, this is awesome!
- Rick Bucich
from twhirl
I have had more VWs than other cars...starting with a 71 Superbeetle, and a Split Window Microbus. I would LOVE to have something like this.
- Kreg Steppe
Good for grandparents to visit grandchildren and children through the European continent (or another one as well)...nomadism-revival!
- Isabelle Ayel
wow i posted this a while back and now can't seem to find it for some reason. friendfeed's search function really sucks!
- Cee Bee
So after reading this article yesterday, I found myself this evening in front of a local place that specializes in reconditioning old VWs. It was closed, but there's an awesome red and white microbus out front with a For Sale sign on it. Ugly, underpowered -- and probably dangerous, by modern standards. Want. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
Cee, really? I find FF search is pretty good.
- Kol Tregaskes
I love this Mobile...owned a few Vdubs, lived in a VW camper, but this is off the hook..I would become a true nomad with this...
- bcultral
I'd like to have something like this, something small. What do you really need? A bed, perhaps a TV and room for your computer. Then you can live anywhere you like, in theory.
- Kol Tregaskes
Who is this Canadian designer Alexandre Verdier? Seems like he is on Facebook, Linked In but I can't seem to find anything else about him.
- Brian Sullivan
We had a wesvalia built Micro when I was a kid. I loved that thing. It was a little flimsily built; but boy it was perfect for my family of campers and road-tripping warriors. Too bad this one is so pricey
- Bill Rawlinson
An early birthday present: The Gmail Javascript compiler was just open-sourced! http://code.google.com/closure... (it compiles JS into smaller, faster JS)
Unfortunately it looks like the internationalization features may be missing. I wonder why those were removed? (or if I'm just not seeing it)
- Paul Buchheit
@Paul the Closure project has three components: compiler, library, and template language. Looks like the Closure/library might be competing with jQuery.
- Shakeel Mahate
I think jQuery does a lot of stuff that might confuse the compiler, e.g. iterating over an array of string function names and creating new function wrappers (look at the way the parent/child/next/prev/etc functions get installed) The Closure library is also full of type annotations that help the compiler make better optimization choices, so you're likely to get a better compiled outcome using Closure than jQuery + fixes + compiler
- Ray Cromwell
@paul -- I know you've been wanting this opensourced for a long time. sorry it took such a long time. Nick Santos and the jscompiler team has finally done it! Cheers!
- Jing Lim
Congratulations to the team (and @Paul & Jing) -- I know everyone's been waiting a long time for this. For anyone considering whether to use jQuery vs Closure, consider that they're meant for largely different purposes. jQuery's good for enhancing static web pages; Closure's much better at building large apps. And as Ray points out above, Closure the library is going to get much better results from Closure the compiler than an arbitrary js library would, because of all the type annotations.
- Joel Webber
Paul Buchheit has been at the top of my best of pages all month. Rock on, Paul.
- Donald C. Lindsay
Hey HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL !!! Cool present!! <insert CAKE> :D
- Susan Beebe
That writeup is trolling for traffic IMHO. Nit picking 50 lines out of 200+ thousand (written for readability, which get compiled and optimized), providing no benchmarks for claims, and spending half the time bashing Java, it just seems to be struggling to find something wrong with Closure.
- Ray Cromwell
Sachin: he seems to be commenting on Closure the JS library, not Closure the JS compiler (that Paul's post was about). And he may be a douchebag, but I haven't seen anything I disagree with.
- Gabe
@Sachin: I hate to be too harsh, but that post is pretty much garbage. From what I can tell he's pretty much managed to enumerate some of the worst things about Javascript -- nitpicking the code for referencing "undefined" directly without declaring it as an uninitialized local? That's insane. Following this advice is mostly a recipe for an unreadable mess. Also, look in the comments for several refutations of the idea that some of these are even optimizations.
- Joel Webber
Joel, you're just not man enough to handle a language where 'top' is an implicitly reserved keyword, and 'undefined' which should be, isn't. But it could be worse, 'null' could be something you could override. :)
- Ray Cromwell
I'm sorry for everyone who noticed Netflix overwhelming their feed recently. RSS GUIDs are supposed to stay unique and constant but some services change them every few months. We have some logic in place at FriendFeed to minimize the impact but it still sucks :(
I have always ignored the GUID, choosing instead of figure out rss entry uniqueness based on a combination of title, content, author, date published, and, of course, permalink. I found that too many things change to be able to rely on something like a publisher-provided ID. I'm sure GUID works well 99% of the time, but for some reason, I found it a fun problem to just attack entries by...

Samuel (it is hard writing that name, you will always be Rob in my head): It's a tough call. And on a Droid - you can run all 8 of those things at one time and swap between them, share data between them, and not have to close any of them.
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, are you saying that the Droid has everything but those two apps?
- Mistletoe Glen
Oops, misspelling, should be MLB.tv — I'll edit
- Mistletoe Glen
Oh, and I should have included this: it has to play all my iTunes music and videos.
- Mistletoe Glen
My G1 plays my whole iTunes library and videos - So I'd assume the Droid does as well, only faster
- Matthew DeVries
I can not wait to get a Droid... I mean, Why not have an iPhone, PalmPre, AND a Droid? Put those networks and their 'map-converge-size' sword fights to an honest test! All I really would need is a BBerry (does TMobile do them?) to round out the device/network testing matrix... Hmmm, perhaps a FreelanceG33k Project in the making...
- Walt Ruppar
Does the metal detector app work with Droid? That's something the iPhone can't do ;) EDIT: Nevermind. The 3GS can do it now.
- Rodfather
If it has a digital compass, then the metal detector *should* work.
- Slappy Line
LOL, Matthew — I can now imagine all the songs sounding like a 33RPM album played at 45RPM :)
- Mistletoe Glen
I meant access time (for the videos) of course :)
- Matthew DeVries
Honestly, I don't miss the iPhone. I still carry it around but hardly use it and if I do, it's for games. I'm fairly happy with the Pre. I mostly use the browser, camera (w/ flash), SMS & IM (AIM & Gtalk). Multitasking and messaging is good. I do wish it had video recording and Shazam. I just couldn't stand AT&T any longer. Android looks nice and with Verizon, it'll be a hit because people actually like being able to make phone calls.
- Rodfather
I may be the weird one out, but I've never really had any problems with AT&T; been using them since moving to the US in 2000.
- Mistletoe Glen
You came from a foreign country and have cultivated a love for.......baseball? I mean, I like it, but if I weren't american? I'd think it was only slightly less boring than Patong
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, you are clearly a philistine. Or a soccer fan.
- Kevin Pedraja
The site says nothing about stripping DRM. And I'm pretty certain that's not allowable under the DMCA, though I'd love to be incorrect on that.
- Mistletoe Glen
There's an HP-15C app? Why was I not told? Update: Oh, $20? Wow. The original calculator was only $100 or so (and I still use it daily).
- LogEx
The old DRM'd iTunes music is no more problem than a DVD. Apple lets you burn it to a CD then re-import it with no DRM, so it's not a big leap to format-shift it through some other means. Glen, the DMCA is a BS law... what you do in the privacy of your own home for your personal Fair Use isn't what gets people in trouble with the RIAA. You'll still have the original .m4p file to enjoy on your computer.
- LogEx
If I bought the music, I should be able to use it however I want. Google 'doubleTwist drm'. It converts your files. The guy on board was the one who cracked the DVD protection.
- Rodfather
Verizon is going to get sued for offering an "unlimited" data plan that only allows 5GB.
- Mistletoe Glen
That is everyone's "unlimited" data plan. Even your too the wall broadband connection has a cap.
- Matthew DeVries
And I think Verizon's is actually nicer, because when you hit the cap, they just turn you off, unlike iPhone/ATT, who let you keep going, don't tell you have the cap, and charge like $1/MB beyond the 5GB.
- Matthew DeVries
Verizon charges you extra too. At least on my MiFi plan. I hate cell companies
- Rodfather
Thusly armed, there are few members of H. sapiens who would not be given all they could handle by only *one* adult male baboon.

- Christopher A Carr
Or, you may find yourself with a few new female primate friends.

how to change is easy even for *nix/*BSD dummies:) The question is *if* it's true that alpine's change will cause applicative problems and instability. I read several posts about this issue
- ArMyZ
Pretty important if you jailbreak... I was traveling and my hotel was around several free WiFi Host-spots at cafes, oil changes, bars, etc and was able to successfully browse at least 7 iphones during my two-week stay... Not gonna lie, I downloaded a few good pictures and uploaded one random image of Homer Simpson to each... Hey, think about it... coulda done soooo much worse! So change that passwd now!
- Walt Ruppar
@ ArMyZ - I had recalled issues with password changes in previous iPhone firmwares as well, so good question. I've tested it over a couple days so far on 3.1.2 and seen zero issues.
- Patrick Jordan
@patrick interesting, indeed. Did you reboot?
- ArMyZ
Yes - once last night, and once today so far.
- Patrick Jordan
Oh #bunneh - I just found a picture on my camera of my kitteh basking in your friendfeed glow! That's you in that tiny avatar thumbnail. She's in the one above it as my avatar. Perhaps that's a little too meta.

Dear people hiring: please to be posting your job openings now. I'm impatient, and watching job postings trickle in throughout the whole day is very tiring. Having them all posted at once in the morning when I wake up would be much more exciting, dontcha think?
Have you considered becoming a consultant and working for yourself? Then you can work "for" a bunch of different people and maybe a full time opportunity comes from that? Sorry if I'm not helping. I know how much of a drag it is.
- Josh Haley
Josh, that's what I'm trying, but getting clients is like a job on its own. Of course, the first client is the hardest. Yesterday I spent one hour and a half writing this proposal to a client and he didn't even have the decency to email back saying he received it. :: sigh ::
- Jorge Escobar
That's something I'm mulling over, Josh. In fact, there was a very interesting thread this am on FF that might lead to a venture </all cryptic and junk>
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I really would love to not get back to working for a company. I want something that I own a piece of and that it has flexible time and telecommuting. Can this be done?
- Jorge Escobar
I don't know, but I like to think it can. For me the hardest part about working alone is having no support: no one to bounce ideas around, no fresh pair of eyes to review work, no one to see the things I can't see. I'm hoping that having a consortium/association/network/whatever it gets called would help alleviate that.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
My main gripe is networking IRL. I am so shy to cold-approach people. So I'm a great technologist who needs a sales pipeline. I have so many ideas for startups but I would need maybe a designer and one additional coder to make it happen. A network might help, but the tricky thing is to pick the valuable pieces of it who complement each other and not be like a bunch of "social media experts"...
- Jorge Escobar
I wish you guys all good luck and I hope you will succeed soon..
- Jaap Willem
Jorge, hopefully a network would be able to put you together with a designer and coder. Or at least someone who knows someone... As for the approaching people, well... It's hard. Maybe the trick is to find someone whose style complements you on that.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yeah, sorry for the venting. I feel like I'm putting myself out there too much. Sending you lots of good energy and luck concentrated from a laser beam of awesomeness!
- Jorge Escobar
I have no issues with venting (see the original post, for example!). As for putting yourself out there: maybe it be easier if you approached some business you already have a relationship with as a customer.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Problem with that is I am still employed partly by the company, so that's a no-no, unless I want totally out, which I can't afford right now.
- Jorge Escobar
No, not an existing client for your company: another business, one that you personally deal with in regular life where you're the customer. A local chain is probably easiest, like a coffee shop, dry cleaner, restaurant, landscaper. A company that is big enough to use tech to an extent but small enough that they likely don't have a dedicated tech on staff.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Oh, gotcha. Hmm, gotta think about that one...
- Jorge Escobar
Lots of opportunities in those markets if you're diverse. Websites, data backup solutions, migrating to open source software, straight up tech support, etc.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Dear recruiters stalking me... speak clearly, speak English, and send a follow-up email to all voice-mails with detailed description/requirements (as requested if you listened to my voice-mail greeting). If I don't get back to you in a day or two, it's probably not a fit... So Stop Calling Every 2 hours for 3 days straight!!!
- Walt Ruppar
Tina have you been looking at that yourself? I remember you mentioning that you wanted out of tech...
- Jorge Escobar
Tech is like the mob: it keeps pulling me back in =P My first choice isn't to go out on 'my own' consultant style (I have a bad habit of putting off the mundane business stuff), but it's getting to the point where it might be my best option.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going

I'll wager that some of the folks on this list have received their invite by now, or no longer want one - I have 16 invitations at this instant. It's probably easier for me if you DM.

I have 8 invites to Google Wave, if someone is interested, please DM with e-mail address. Ciao, Andrea

I use it. I like it. Just wish there was an easier way to change the calendar icons and allow for thumbnails. Of course, that would immediately reduce the loading speed…

FF'te bulduğum, tartışmalar sırasında aradan laf sokup kaçan troll'lerin, daima boş konuşan laf ebelerinin, izbe yuvalarından içlerindeki kötülüğü kusan klavye arkası polemik makinelerinin bir listesidir. Holy crap. It seems that Google is going to have some pretty serious explaining to do this morning, as one of our readers has sent us in a tip that reveals a major security flaw involving Google Voice. After entering “site:https://www.google.com/voice... ” into Google, our reader was shocked and discouraged to be greeted by 31 voice mail messages belonging to random Google Voice accounts. Clicking on each revealed not only the audio file and transcript of the call, but it also listed the callers name and phone number as it would if you were checking your own Google Voice voice mail. We’re not too sure if this flaw is something new or if it has been around since Google Voice started, and could just be test messages, but needless to say the matter has to be fixed if it’s legit. Some censored screenshots are after the jump. Thanks, Brian!

UPDATE: It seems as if these voicemails have been publicly posted/shared online and Google indexes them. Here’s official word: “Since the initial idea behind posting a voicemail, was precisely to share it with others, we did not restrict crawling of those messages that users post on the web, but we can certainly understand that users would want to make them public on their sites but not...

Kol: That's pretty neat. Wish it was shorter like wave.com or gwave.com (Google owns gwave.com anyway) or something.
- Nick Humphries
i think this @googlewave.com email address is a temporary thing during testing. after it goes live you should be able to just use it with your google account. at least that's what i think:)
- Taylan Aydınlı

"On October 1st Google released Wave to some 100.000 selected beta testers. While I wasn’t lucky enough to get a first row seat, I had the luck to be nominated by Andrew Terry and Kol Tregaskes for an invite. 2-3 days later my nomination by these fine guys came through. Currently the best way to use Wave is using a regular browser on your computer. In some instances though you might want to use it on the go, say, on an iPhone or iPod touch. There are various claims out there that state it isn’t possible because Google said so on their site when you tried to go there with MobileSafari. It does work though, and it’s not a real secret. Have a look."
