Best Library Fine Petition of the Day: "Me & my friend were playing some video games, when some other guy came up to us and asked if he could play. So we let him, but then we had to leave for awhile, so we just let him play with the controllers and games we rented and apparently he just left them on the floor."
At least they're honest. I'd let them off with a very nominal fine, if that.

no, the honest people are the ones who pay their fines without appealing.

He's getting off easy with the fines. if the stranger has walked out with the stuff, he'd owe us a mint. Also, people wait for this stuff, we have a fine schedule for a reason, and that reason is demand. He admitted full fault as well as a complete disregard for materials (which he signs a tech lending contract that he's responsible for). I reduced the total fine from $120 to $75. Sigh.

That $120 is the total amount for 3 controllers and a couple of games left overnight. Ridonkulous.

Wow, they are incredibly lucky the stuff was still there.

Going through some historical records here we found a fine petition written on an old lunch bag explaining that the borrower had taken pity on the books which hadn't been borrowed for 25 years. It went on charmingly, and apologised for the lunch bag as, being an impecunious student, he couldn't afford scrap paper. We also have a copy of the reply by a clearly amused librarian explaining that books in the library live in perfect comfort among their fellows so needn't be pitied, but reducing the fine from $10 to "a nominal $1" and supplying some scrap paper gratis.
