He's been in the office for less than 24 hours . . . no one on the first day of the job has a desk that looks like it's theirs. 8-)
- LJF Wolffe
You are all missing it: His ENTIRE desktop IS the computer. He's calling in his prefs for wallpaper and icons.
- Morgan Haley
I don't think he has a cellphone. I know they said he might be able to keep his black berry. But, I never saw anything saying that he is able to keep it.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
It's built into the surface of the desk and blends when he isn't actively using it or defaults to wood when the phone rings.
- Martha
I don't think that desk gets a computer. There is a private office off the main room. But really, what do we think he does all day, type bills in Word and surf Wikipedia? He is constantly moving and shaking. Information is looked up for him and placed on his desk at his request. I'll be suprised to see a computer on that desk.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
IT is probably late in setting it up. Typical!
- Jim Goldstein
I did hear yesterday that the Press Secratery was having problems getting logged on to the computer.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
I always loved that desk...very fancy rugged.
- Justin Oberman
This picture is what we've waited for for more than a year and all you have to say is "where's the 'puter?"Jesus Christ.
- teh Dork Knight
You probably wouldn't be satisfied until the Oval Office was the first beta version of a Holodeck running on Linux-based software.
- teh Dork Knight
But...you're right. I noticed that this morning. No laptop, and a 1995 phone setup. WTF?
- Jim Mitchem
His first day on the job and you expected him to be on the social networks? :)
- Morton Fox
Hey, he just moved in. It's not like he brought his own in. Besides, what if there is an enormous workstation set up in that little room where Monica and Bill did the dress-staining?
- Phil Boiarski
Dude. Obama so doesn't need a computer. I'm sure he's got some neural interface or something we just can't see that sends Twitter straight into his optic nerve, ya know?
- Ken Sheppardson
It's in the desk? It probably talks too, like the MCP from Tron...uh oh.
- Rob H.
Hey Steve, did u think of the title to this share?
- Zee.
Okay, so when the President rings the IT Help Desk for support, who answers, and where are they based, and has it been outsourced overseas? :)
- Chris Eldridge
@Zee yes. PR training! I got you here, right? :-)
- Steve Rubel
they probably are installing Windows 7 on it as we speak.....! Until then Blackberry only, I guess.
- Joe Buhler
so he gets windows mobile for official use, and a berry for personal? Since when was any windows OS secure??
- Ian May
can't remember where but I read he was going to be the first US president to use a laptop in the oval office.
- ursi
The phone setup is pretty impressive (well it was once). It's a special phone with all types of encryption devices built-in. To buy one you have to undergo a full background check & a bunch of other security checks.
- Steven Cains
He just shifted into the office. Give him some time to get d lappie!
- Jason
You just know that Steve Jobs is hard at work on a custom job for Obama.
- Steven Perez
Not so sure about that, Steven. Not a huge number of macs in governmental offices.
- Mr. Gunn
it's a giant, wood panel Surface device
- ian kennedy
You know how it goes, IT wasn't notified. It will take a couple of weeks for them to get one ready. I'm wondering where that RED phone sits ..
- Tom Parish
I think his specially tailored blackberry is all the computer he needs.
- imabonehead
Zee, thanks. I gotta blog on this subject. It's a skill we all need in this day and age (especially if you want to influence)
- Steve Rubel
I think I remember that the president has another office attached to the oval office where a computer and messier paperwork sits. I think there has been mention of this re: Clinton and bush's use of email.
- Scott Gatz
I reckon there's a den with beanbags, a beer fridge, snacks, chilled music, and a Mac just off the Oval Office.
- John Samuelson
Just found a user with a "private" friendfeed. If you are going to keep things in a walled garden what is the point of joining friendfeed. Ridiculous. Either participate, or don't.
Twitter I can understand but friendfeed? Seems really odd. C'est la vie
- Keith - @tsudo
Sometimes people don't want to be Googled...
- Mona Nomura
I'm not really interested in their privates, anyway...
- Jemm
Those people are a nuissance, it's a shame they're using these services.
- Richard A.
There are users that participate and still have private feeds, hasn't been any problems with that. Problem I have is when they subscribe to you then don't show any participation AND have private feeds.
- Andrew Trinh
Good point Mona. I can respect that but it is a unique phenom within Friendfeed. Just a bit off-putting I think.
- Keith - @tsudo
Those were some of my reasons. Being googled. Family & work stumbling on my stupid ass comments and activity. It's not much difference. I'm mostly and like'r and commenter anyway. My feed isn't all that.
- Rodfather
Andrew, I find a lack or participation as a dealbreaker regardless but yes I completely agree.
- Keith - @tsudo
Hey guys... As a person who just came out of a private feed, I can tell you that many people have them for many different reasons. Mine was related to work and privacy. If you don't want to sunscrie to them fine, but the backhand without knowing the reasons isn't appreciated.
- Johnny Worthington
Well, FF is capable of being many things. It doesn't require the community to be useful. Also, some people may not really "get it". It's a relatively complicated service for noobs.
- ·[▪_▪]·
I apologize Johnny. I shouldn't have been so harsh. Just trying to understand.
- Keith - @tsudo
I recently unprivated also since it must be annoying for people I initially subscribe to, not be able to see my activity. I may do it again for privacy concerns. Like sometimes I'll post pics of my nephew and I'm not totally comfortable everyone seeing those.
- Rodfather
it's cool. Sorry if I came off harsh. Private is a feature FF is working on but right now it's an all or nothing deal. If it was a choice between Private or No FF, I'll take the hit that comes with private :)
- Johnny Worthington
I always readily admit when I was wrong and calling something ridiculous without considering motive was asinine.
- Keith - @tsudo
It isn't an elegant solution but how about 2 FF accounts. One public persona and one private persona that would allow only selected friends and family to see more personal information? I can truly respect privacy. Heck look at my name. :)
- Keith - @tsudo
Well... It might be to hard to manage... And as for interaction, it comes down to your skill and personality. In the 2 1/2 months I was private, I still got over 90 subscriptions :)
- Johnny Worthington
$699. HP DV2 ultra thin notebook is what I would get a kid instead of a netbook. Why? Netbooks struggle with games an HD video playback. http://www.hp.com
- Robert Scoble
from email
What kind of kids are we talking about. We tested my kid's favorite gaming sites on a net book (they're 3 and 5) and it worked find. My toddlers aren't into HD either. Yet.
- Anika
@mrsmoldor agrees with Bwana's wife.... Vivienne Tam for the ladies - come on guys, *we* need a signature netbook too !!
- Jon Biddell
what makes the hp device so much better for HD movies and playback? i watch movies all te time on my dell mini 9 and love it. traveled from san fransico to minneapolis in the air watching movies and had no problems with it. plus it is cheaper and runs Linux :)
- Jonathan Jesse
Actually my MSI Wind can run a 1080p quicktime movie in Mac. Shamefully Windows struggles with 720p.
- Bhavishya Kanjhan
Jonathan: that pricepoint has crappier GPU's than this machine.
- Robert Scoble
What's the RAM on that machine? I'm looking for something to play my MMOs. If the HP can do well with that sort of gaming performance I might be convinced to give the brand another try.
- Sally Robinson
Man that laptop looks PIMP. Kicks my Acer Aspire out.
- Albert K
Lobomized term? I take exception to that...I have a brain and my brain chooses to like terms like lamesauce, oddsauce, ubersauce and awesomesauce. Ergo there's nothing lobotomized about them. :p
- Alex Scoble
Alex, totally agree. Language generativity FTW! Heh, I feel like you've had a string of posts featuring dictionary sparring. Are you perhaps a closet cunning linguist?
- Victor Ganata
I know I'm in the minority here but I think all of these cutesy, super-trendy terms like [whatever]sauce, FTW, FTL, fail, epic, epic fail, meh, buh, feh, nom, om nom, etc., are completely shallow. They're so widely overused that they've lost all real emphasis and come off as grammatically lazy. I know my opinion isn't a popular one but it's mine and I'm sticking to it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Unfortunately, I think you have the history of human language evolution against your opinion, Akiva.
- Victor Ganata
Hardly. Words come and go. I don't know too many people who still use words like 'groovy' or 'ripping' anymore. When was the last time you heard a guy referred to as a 'gate' or a girl as a 'dame'? It's just a matter of time before these words fade away just like 'gnarly' and 'wizard' did.
- Akiva Moskovitz
It's true, usage frequency ebbs and flows. But they're permanent parts of the lexicon now. 'Groovy', 'ripping', 'gnarly', and 'wizard' in the senses you're citing will always exist. But I have to admit, I don't know what 'gate' means in that usage.
- Victor Ganata
The natural history of a lexicon is to expand, never contract. And where do new words come from?
- Victor Ganata
Did this thread really just turn into a philological debate?
- Nick Austad
I wasn't arguing against the expansion of a lexicon. I was stating that those words are so over-used that they've lost any compelling emphasis.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Wouldn't that be "marinate". Lamesauce itself would be a marinade, however.
- Clay Newton
I've often wondered what will someday replace the ubiquitous "LOL"
- Nick Austad
Dude, I totally use groovy. Bruce Campbell made that word complete awesomesauce by using it in at least two of the Evil Dead movies (2 and 3).
- Alex Scoble
Oh, well, since Bruce Campbell said it in a movie...
- Akiva Moskovitz
Couldn't you combine awesomesauce and lamesauce to make tamesauce, or at best meh'tatouille? :-/
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
I mean, isn't that what happens? Whatever you think is ridiculous now doesn't just disappear. It usually gets replaced by something even more ridiculous.
- Victor Ganata
I took this to heart in a way, and went back to plain ole "banane"- also was told the woman who coined awesomesauce would be annoyed with my appropriation... but what I really wanted to say is, FF has sucked for me lately, and I think I'm going to start pruning.
- anna sauce
Yeah, anna...I started pruning too...Started hiding a lot more "twitters" across the board for one thing, and I no longer automatically reciprocate subscribes...I only subscribe to people who are active in friendfeed now, and not just people who post a lot of stuff from Twitter and elsewhere...
- Alex Scoble
"Defender is a horizontally-scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game created by Williams Electronics in 1980. It was designed and programmed by Eugene Jarvis (who later formed Vid Kidz and made more of Williams' hits), Larry DeMar, Sam Dicker, and Paul Dussault. This game was slow to become a hit when it was released as many thought it was too difficult due to its control configuration of five buttons and a joystick. It ultimately gained many fans and remained popular throughout the 1980s. Defender has been described as "quite possibly, the hardest significant game there is"."
- Steve Isaacs
from Bookmarklet
I sucked at this game. But, I loved it. I found it on shockwave a while back. Still suck at it. :)
- Yolanda
Love this game and played it on several platforms (Acorn Electron and Amiga to name 2).
- Kol Tregaskes
from twhirl
There's a small burger place next to my apartment that has a very old Defender II cabinet. Every once and awhile my dad will come pick me up and we go over there and nerd out.
- Nick Austad
Kol? You had an Elk? Wow, you are the ONLY other person I have met online who has used an Electron.
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
I liked it, but I sucked, SUCKED, at it. I was better at Galaga and Zaxxon.
- Steve Lowe
ROM files of most old arcade games are available for free online, just need a MAME emulator and the games can then be played on the computer. Hours of fun for the whole family!
- Vincent X
As much as I hate iTunes, I will buy this as soon as I get home tonight. This is too cool of a project to let my platform pissiness outweigh cool art :)
- Adam Lasnik
Next sing-alongs, then off Broadway version, then Broadway, then Tony's all around! or # 1 on iTunes, whichever?
- David Monroe
from twhirl
So surreal how this all came together through twitter and other sites, almost felt like I was there. *So* jealous, wish I was there! Now I need to go sing some Still Alive on Rock Band...
- Nick Austad
It was a packed house, we were in the strong bad panel before Felicia's Shindig we were really planning on staying in our seats for The Guild but they kicked us out and neglected to tell us the line outside had already exceeded maximum occupancy! Oh well ;(
- Geoff Schultz
Thanks again everybody! FF friends are the *BEST* -- Dinner @ Gordon Ramsey at the London was awesome and had a blast hanging out with friends at the Edison. This was a good birthday. And you all helped make it that way, so thanks.
- Shawna Benson
It would be badass to say the least, but I am gonna call BS* on this. "Sony expects to sell hundreds of these devices within the first year" and "Walk-Pods". I don't think so. :-(
- cmiper
God, I always hated tapes... so worthless...
- Jason Carreira
Dude, cassettes are so much awesome. How'd you get so lucky and land Cyndy, sunshine? Sheesh!
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
I hated cassettes too... with vinyl you go to a track, hell with 8 tracks you kinda go to a track :P Cassettes, portable, and that was all it had going for it. *edit* though, I have seen some cool cassette label art
- Michael W. May
I bet a trillion dollars (pounds?) someone on FriendFeed can make this LOL
- Mona Nomura
Not sure a cassette would ever fit in an ipod case (let alone with mechanism). Is this why the pics only show it half-in? Could certainly go with an early HanGo or Creative route. Perhaps it's time to dig out my SSI Neo and rip its gizzards out...
- Rob
Japanese people only cook PB&J at home. Then they cut it into little bits and eat with chopsticks. And they only drink sake from big giant porcelain urns.
- Internet's Tad
It's also a very rare treat for most Japanese people
- Eric Schlissel
from twhirl
Used to be, Eric.. like in the 80's LOL

Unless you're a sushi chef. I lost my first girlfriend in college to a sushi chef. How do you compete with a guy who wakes up at 5 am to search out amazing food?
- Mitchell Tsai
it's cheaper in restaurants too. try Sushiland :) although it's not as authentic.
- ~C4Chaos
i'm black and my husband's romanian/hungarian, but we used to have nigiri sushi at home and just the rice alone is time consuming. we thought, 'no way in hell are people in japan doing this every night', so now we have sashimi and other regular japanese foods all the time.
- Anika
but are born with ninja skills. watch out!
- Rodfather
wait a min.... i've made sushi and it wasn't all that hard. (but of course it was veggie... no fancy rare fish)
- Ňicķ
Sushi at home = Do Not Want! The only thing we make at home are 1. oinari (tofu pocket sushit) 2. temaki (handrolls) 3. battera (saba pressed sushi) NO California rolls!
- Mona Nomura
My mom likes to make cut rolls. I like to eat sashimi fresh from the grocery store. Sushi is too much work.
- Mitchell Tsai
tamaki isn't sushi? (in the broad american sense of the word)
- Ňicķ
Temaki or handrolls we do at home, are not the temakis you see at sushi restaurants. We actually have 'temaki' parties, where the neta (sashimi), nori (seaweed), shari (sushi rice), are out on a table and we all make our own :)
- Mona Nomura
I've made some good sushi at home but only because I love "cooking" and I love sushi.. just to try... but yeah, my pathetic efforts have never come remotely close to the great sushi restaurant experience.
- Anthony Citrano
This is what I've always thought 'home' sushi was. Inari and futomaki. Has egg, mushroom, cucumber, and other ingredients. Still takes time to make. The brown, scrotum looking thing is inari. Called them footballs as kids. http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Rodfather
ah well Mona, i guess that's what i was talking about. I think in general, most americans would consider that (handrolls) as sushi (in the gringo sense of the word) and would love for you to show them how to do just that much... not necessarily "real" sushi
- Ňicķ
We do sushi at home. Well, vegetarian sushi. It's often easier than eating out with food-allergic kids.
- Cyndy
Not do... did... it's too much work... @Cyndy thought it wasn't too much work because I had to do all the prep and she got to come in and just do the rolling / eating.
- Jason Carreira
It is WAY too much effort. And it doesn't taste the same at home
- Mona Nomura
Australian sushi rolls are so simple and easy to make at home - and very cheap when you are on that 'killer' budget
- Chris Loft
What in the Sam's Hill are Australian Sushi Rolls, dare I ask
- Mona Nomura
And oddly enough, my caucasian father used to make sushi all the time when I lived there.
- Nick Austad
from twhirl
Temaki parties sound like a hell of a lot of fun. Hmm... *plans next dinner party*
- Stellina
Stellina: They most definitely are! I don't know where you live, but Japanese supermarkets sell a lot of fresh sashimi :)
- Mona Nomura
It doesn't seem like sashimi would be that hard to make.. or nigiri for that matter... sashimi is all about having a good piece of fish and cutting it well, right? We have "sashimi grade" fish at our grocery store... I've been tempted to try it. The first sushi I had that I actually liked was some fresh salmon and tuna that a friend cut into cubes for me. I had had a bad first experience with sushi years before but that made me decide I loved it.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Well it takes YEARS to perfect the kniving skills to properly cut the fish, years to learn how to properly cook and flavor the rice, and nigiri making? Takes at least 3-5 years to perfect. It's an art, a profession, a craft, in my culture :)
- Mona Nomura
From having been at various times heavily into temari, kumihimo, seed-bead work and Aikido, I've noticed that almost everything the Japanese do is turned into a craft at least and an Art at most. The attention to detail is astounding and so is the (traditional) amount of repetition and honing needed to consider yourself graduated to any recognized level of expertise. It's an endearing if intimidating quality of the culture.
- Her Lindsay-ness
i wouldn't suggest anyone try to make sushi rice at home. that's labor intensive and my husband decided to do it while i pregnant, which meant the mirin smells killed me, ergo i almost had to kill 'him'. thankfully, after a small island's worth of rice he gave up.
- Anika
XD i love killing your memes on FF ....i seen like 5 FF articles on this...overhyped much?

- viki saigal
*rolls eyes* i'm sure he is humbled that were on friendfeed gocking over his great talent i just think that hype is still hype. he's someone's son and brother...truthfully..he is just one man. brilliant at his work. but just one man nonetheless...one leg at a time..one leg.

boo @ Caroline. Don't hate, use hide if you have to. We don't care how he puts his pants on, we care about his amazing accomplishment and how it's made us feel

@Caroline, No, actually, he really is a world champion of the highest rank. Of course, all people have certain things in common, but this doesn't take away from his massive accomplishments, not in the least.

Can we just combine our two overexposed media figures of the summer and declare that Michael Phelps is Obama's running mate?

dude, what's up with all these manga thingies? seriously.. LOL
- Mona Nomura
It's this weeks "thing" Mona. I think it's kinda cool how they look like the people they're supposed to represent, however this post right here proves it's more of a trick of familiarity for the viewer. I haven't a clue who any of these people are supposed to be, they all look the same. But when people who's face I already know post one I'm like "oh wow, that looks just like you!". Anyway, it's the bright shiny object of the moment! faceyourmanga.com
- Adam Turetzky
ok, I'm going to make mine too, then. brb. Thanks for filling me in, Adam ;)
- Mona Nomura
I've been trying to resist doing one of these but I'm starting to slip.

Since I couldn't make one that looked like me, I went back to a tool I used before and really liked to make some of the family: http://friendfeed.com/e... Maybe they're more "bitmap" than "vector" but at least you can see the resemblance.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Trish, we'll be the last two on the webernets to jump on the bandwagon. That should count for... something?

Kim & Jason is all about an idea. It's the crazy notion that there is more to life than the hectic busyness, cynical melancholy and overwhelming stress that is typical of most modern lives. Adultitis tricks us into missing out on the best parts of life and causes us to take ourselves WAY too seriously.
- Mitchell Tsai
We believe that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, that our lives should be bursting with big dreams, oodles of passion, and an enthusiastic playfulness. We believe in curiosity, delighting in the little things, and a faith that knows things always work out for the best. We believe that a life that embraces a childlike spirit is a life that is less stressful and way more fun.
- Mitchell Tsai
At it's core, Kim & Jason (which has been described as "candy for the soul" -- way too cool for us to make up) is all about helping grown-ups of all ages to slow down and Escape Adulthood, whether it's through a stress-reducing chuckle or a nostalgic reflection at a treasured childhood memory. But just as importantly, we are extremely passionate about making a difference in the lives of children as well.
- Mitchell Tsai
That's why we pledge 3% of all merchandise sales to organizations that help meet the needs and improve the lives of children. Kim & Jason fans have played a big role in helping to save childhood for kids all over the world.
- Mitchell Tsai
I got a chance to see it last November in New York while visiting my brother. My first broadway show, pretty amazing experience. I believe I have a few photos up on my Picasa page.

OMG, so fun! If you haven't been there before, make her take you to LIttle Five Points.

Love the show...do you know if there will be anyone show-affiliated at DragonCon? If not, we'll just have to print out fliers and do an entire show "stand in" photo...*grin*.
- Ken Kennedy
We are going to PAX in Seattle instead :( Sad we can't do both. Next year!
- Felicia
Yeah, I knew at least part of you were at PAX...dang. We'll photoshop you all into some photos, then! *grin* Have fun at PAX!
- Ken Kennedy
@Bret How can I stop the engineer next to you :-)? I've been working on and off on this last week and I have finally got some (good) results.
- Alex Popescu
The Seattle Central Library is the most amazing work of architecture I've ever photographed. It cost somewhere around $150 million to build the building according to a taxi cab driver that I talked with about it. It was so nice being able to photograph in a public space like that so freely. Tons more shots of that structure coming in the days ahead.
- Thomas Hawk
4th missle FAIL. but srsly, this is bad news.
- Hao Chen
To be clear, I am not celebrating a missile launch. Not sure I expected people to gather that from this post. Rather, I am entertained by the desperation of political regimes to show infallibility and their use of very modern tools like Photoshop to do so. Imagine who they got to doctor this image. Was it a pro in their intelligence services already? Or maybe it was some official's geeky kid?
- Christopher Sacca
Nice post - one always suspects a level of deception but to see it as clearly as this is unique...
- Kevin Cearns
do you think they got their Photoshop from (a) one of the many spam messages offering to sell you Photoshop, (b) www.piratebay.org, or (c) Best Buy in Palo Alto?
- peter
Three missiles? Bah. Four missiles?Global domination!
- Ken Norton
aesthetically the 4 missile photo looks better. do you think they did a UI review before releasing this?
- peter
@peter I agree, that missile does look strong. I would have liked to have seen the comments. "More plume. How about a touch more burnt umber?"
- Christopher Sacca
Now 25% less scary! Or, as Iran may want us to think: 33% more powerful!
- Jennie Lin
i wonder if they tried to launch 4 but only 3 fired. and for pride reasons they wanted to show 4 launches.
- peter
a possible US reply to this is a photoshopped image of our lasers from outer space firing down and evaporating these missiles. Lets win with better JPEGs!!!!!
- peter
They need to hire a better photoshop guy/gal. It's so obvious, it's not even funny.
- AJ Batac
why didn't they go for broke and paste in another 50?
- Nathan Rein
If it was me, I would have erased the misfiring 4th missile rather than trying to clone in another missile. "The 4th missile was INVISIBLE - be afraid!"
- David Worrell
"Another phrase "So I herd u like mudkips," a reference to a sea creature from the popular animated show "Pokémon," spawned thousands of tribute videos on YouTube. 4chan.org began as a simple message board with pictures and text. It was started by Christopher Poole in his Long Island bedroom in 2003 when he was 15 years old. Since then it has grown to more than 3 million monthly users, according to Mr. Poole."
