College of Nursing Receives Over $2 Million from the Michigan Nursing Corps Initiative to Spur Increase in State's Educators - http://www.media.wayne.edu/2009...
The Wayne State University College of Nursing has been awarded over $2 million in the latest round of grants related to initiatives aimed at alleviating the state's nursing shortage. This award will prepare faculty for Michigan Schools of Nursing, helping to alleviate a bottleneck to preparing the necessary number of nurses to meet the state's need. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2007 unveiled the creation of a Michigan Nursing Corps to specifically confront the state's critical shortage of nurses. The governor said the Corps will address the key obstacle to educating greater numbers of nurses - a shortage of faculty - by preparing additional nurse educators to train new nurses by the year 2010. - Wayne State University

Anthropology professor at Wayne State releases new book, Technology and Culture - http://media.wayne.edu/2009...
The concept of technology has come a long way over the years, as it was once only described through tangible items such as tools and computers. From the perception of ethnographers, a new meaning is brought to the word technology, a meaning that stresses the importance of not only physical things, but also approaches and expectations. In a new book, Technology and Culture, Allen Batteau, Ph.D., presents an inclusive synopsis of how technology is represented in culture and how cultural values are embodied in technology. - Wayne State University

Dr. Wei-Zen Wei and her colleagues at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit shook up the cancer research field last year when she published a paper that concluded a cancer vaccine had prevented laboratory mice from succumbing to one of the most virulent forms of breast cancer. Wei's lab was the first in the world to develop the HER2 DNA vaccine. It was first tested on tumor cells that no longer responded to other therapies for HER2-positive breast cancer. The DNA vaccine was then tested in lab mice that were exposed to drug-resistant tumors. The vaccine prevented the cancer from growing in the mice. “We inject this reagent into the body to stimulate the (patient's) immune system to prevent the disease,” said Wei, a professor of immunology and microbiology at Karmanos and Wayne State University School of Medicine. - Wayne State University

The Five Years of the Petersen Presidency: From Start to Resignation By George Krieps I would like to thank Dr. John Petersen for extending to the Seymour Herald the first opportunity to reflect on his five years as President of the University of Tennessee up through his resignation, and comment on higher education in the State of Tennessee. This interview is not intended to tell both sides of the story; I did not wish to seek opposing views or detractor comments, as these have been amply covered by other news media. Dr. Petersen would not address rumors, statements, and innuendo from any source, as to do so would only result in further controversy and would not undo any harm inaccuracies might have caused. This is an interview with an individual that this reporter considers to be honest, intelligent, and a credit to the University of Tennessee, and academia as a whole. - Wayne State University

“Don’t question our investigative approach.” said FBI WMD Chief Majidi at the mid-August 2008 Science briefing. And to make sure you don’t, the truth has been gagged (all USAMRIID employees), redacted (all documents produced), under seal (ongoing and past briefing in matters such as US v. Al-Timimi), classified (numerous documents that should be declassified according to former CIA/FBI agent WMD intellience analyst PhD Jennifer Smith), autoclaved (NYP anthrax and Iowa ISU and USDA Ames), withheld from production under FOI (Long Notebook 4010, RMR Record 1030, September and October 2001 emails without a statutory exemption, or not put in writing. But we don’t need these carryovers — like a bad hangover — of the highly politicized US Bush Administration and Department of Justice. Most intelligence is “open source.” By all appearances they were not able to figure it out based even on that open source information. http://www.anthraxandalqaeda.com - Wayne State University

$1.5M toward Great Lakes water waste : News : WPBN TV 7&4 - http://www.upnorthlive.com/news...
(AP) -- DETROIT - The Great Lakes Protection Fund is giving Wayne State University $1.48 million to help cut energy waste in the Detroit water system, which serves four million southeastern Michigan residents. Engineering Professor Carol Miller heads a team developing computer software to reduce energy use in the system. It pumps 675 million gallons a day in a 1,079-square-mile area with 126 communities in eight counties. Miller says people now control most water pumps and decide whether to run them based on experience, often wasting water and energy. She projects a reduction of 10 million tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants per year. Governors of the Great Lakes states founded the nonprofit fund in 1989 to improve the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. (Copyright ©2009 by The Associated Press.
