I thought it was interesting (I'm about halfway through the report) that the barriers to actually getting on the Web are lower now than ever before in history, and predicted to get even lower, since it's becoming a universal feature on any phone to have Web access. That's why relatively undeveloped countries are outpacing mobile Web usage in the United States.

I still don't understand how social filesharing wasn't popular. You have this whole cool community with all sorts of features... and filesharing. It should have been the most popular thing ever. I guess that's the problem with having a site that only loads half the time.

My kids already deal with that in MA. If you want a text book, speak up or it's online. NO problem except- in spite of all the dough that flowed, the state contractors for online materials SUCKS for MA. Worst prehistoric sites-ever.

So I'm finally taking the plunge from Bloglines to Google Reader mostly because none of my subscriptions are working on Bloglines. However, I really like jumping from one subscription to the next using the 's' key. Shift+what is Google Reader's equivalent? Really? (Or am I wrong?)

It's happening way too often lately. I emailed my contact at Ask but he is out of the office. I don't get RWW, TechCrunch, FriendFeed, and more. They all show exclamation points. :(

I made that same switch a month or two ago, and I love Google Reader. To get a full list of keyboard shortcuts, just hit ? and you'll see them all. Very handy.

Yup, Gmail has ? too. I still don't get it. Shift+N seems to do what I want, but I'm actually looking for "next unread subscription." What's the right shortcut for that?

If you click Show: "updated" instead of "all", then hitting Shift-N will go to the next unread subscription, since you will only be showing those subs with unread content.

Me too. Bloglines was going down too often for my liking. I've come to like G Reader now. The "Share" feature is pretty neat. Of course, the feeds don't get any lesser. Still 1000+. Sigh.

I'm really not sure I'm liking Google Reader's shortcuts. :( Beforehand, I just had to hit "s" and I got to the next item. Now I have to hit Shift+N and Shift+O. It's really annoying.

oh Tamar - if you press j/k to go between items -then when you get to the bottom of that tag/folder you can press space to go to the next tag/folder. That wasn't exactly what you were looking for though was it... :/

Yeah - ? does the same thing, Zee. I like that. I'm not sure. I guess I'm used to old technology. I am an early adopter of new things but don't always like to change the old and still functional, except Bloglines has started sucking lately. Actually, GReader isn't too bad due to j/k and being able to actually *see* headlines so that I don't accidentally skim over a relevant feed item.

I'm not hating it -- just frustrated by the seemingly extra steps. ;) The only wish-list items I see now are 1) to remove the whitespace on the right hand side and 2) to give me the opportunity to change the font of the items I'm reading. Thoughts?

I used Bloglines for a while, but switched to GR over a year ago. I use it on my Blackberry too, and it works fine there as well.

I switched to Bloglines when my pc died and I was stuck using something really old & slow that couldn't handle Newzie. I am using Google Reader only till I get everything set up on the new PC and Newzie is installed. I prefer real desktop software and the features in Newzie are awesome.

April I use GR as much as anything because it's NOT desktop software, and I can read it on any one of the computers here, and on my cellphone, and computers at other locations too. I mostly live in the cloud these days.

That's me too, unfortunately. No responses from Bloglines or my contact at Ask.com, so I'm going to GR. I sure am going to miss Bloglines, I felt like it was a LOT easier to use than GR.

The whole Bloglines issue has destroyed half an article I was working on. Now need to find replacement online reader that works well for old slow computers (something better than using Google Reader Mobile on desktop)

Wendy, same here. My contact at Ask is around but was out of the office on Thurs/Friday. It's unfortunate that he was out of the office perhaps during the most important time for Bloglines's survival. I'm pretty sure I switched for good.

We've got something similar going on, only with us, it's both insurance AND the high taxes you have to pay when you're self-employed. You end up having to pay so much it's really not worth it being self-employed.

Haven't used one since I got out of college. There are very few good libraries in India. The British Library in Pune is the best there and that sucks bigtime. On a completely different note, I like keeping books - irrespective of whether I liked or disliked them; if I read it, I should keep it. But yes, I would like to *have* a library, by the time I am 50.

Sid, it depends on what you're researching and whether you're in a large city. However, whatever you can't find in your own library can usually be borrowed from another library thanks to the magic of a little thing called "interlibrary loans". And don't forget - librarians are there to help you with research. We don't just keep people from talking loud. :)

My local library allows you to "borrow" digital copies of books. They also have the cheapest DVD rentals in town ($1/ 3 days) And libraries are still the best and cheapest way to get a hold of a copy of an older, out of print, and hard to find book.
