Five Alternatives to Twitter - http://www.twitterrati.com/2008...
The first three of those aren't even viable alternatives. Plurk, Identi.ca, and Jaiku? All three hopefully will take the same path as Pownce did. Friendfeed and Tumblr work, though. - Tamar Weinberg
Why do you wish ill on 3 micro-blogging services ? Simply because you are disappointed at the demise of Pownce. It is unlikely identi.ca will ever die as I can take the OS software and run my own instance. That is a crucial difference. - Andy C
+1 Tamar - Damien Franco
Wow, pretty harsh. I don't think Identi.ca is ever going anywhere, though. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I think it's pretty safe to say that Twitter isn't going anywhere, and people are going where the community is, and that's Twitter. The others are just floundering, regardless of any improvements they have. - Nathan Chase
Plurk: deadpool. Jaiku: depends on whether Google really does something with it. Identi.ca: the closest replacement among the bunch with the big plus of being open. Tumblr is a nice mini-blogging platform, but not at all good for conversations. - LogEx
I see many similarities between Jaiku/Pownce - derided by the masses but well liked by a small but loyal and passionate community. I think Google could leave Jaiku alone for another 5 years and existing users would continue to use it. It's better for true (threaded) conversations, has good mobile support and supports groups. - Andy C
There is no alternative to twitter, only imitations - orionstarr
