The Illustrated Man and shapeshifting LED Tattoos | Unusual Life
"New LED tattoos from the University of Pennsylvania could make the Illustrated Man real (minus the creepy stories, of course). Researchers there are developing silicon-and-silk implantable devices which sit under the skin like a tattoo. Already implanted into mice, these tattoos could carry LEDs, turning your skin into a screen." - Occam's Toilet Brush from Bookmarklet

NYU Students Create Shirts that Detect Pollution with Style
"Hypercolor clothes, those garments that changed colors with heat, may have gone out of style in the '80s. But there's a new thermochromic sweatshirt in town. Two N.Y.U. graduate students have created sweatshirts that change colors when they are exposed to pollution—anything from car exhaust to second-hand smoke." - Cyber Wanderlust from Bookmarklet

"We found evidence to support the suggestion that LilyPad is disproportionally appealing to women, as compared to Arduino (we estimated that about 9% of Arduino purchasers were female while 35% of LilyPad purchasers were). We found evidence that suggests that a very large proportion of people making high-visibility projects using LilyPad are female as compared to Arduino (65% for LilyPad, versus 2% for Arduino). Digging deeper, qualitative evidence suggests a reason. LilyPad users aren't just different. The projects they are making are different too. Although LilyPad and Arduino are the same chips and the same code, we suggest that LilyPad's design, and the way the platform is framed, leads to different types of projects that appeal to different types of people. For example, Arduino seems likely to find its way into an interaction design project or a fighting robot. LilyPad seems more likely to find its way into a smart and responsive textile. Very often, different types of people..." - marcell mars

"The Fairytale Fashion Collection uses technology to create magical clothing in real life. Electronics, mechanical engineering, and mathematics are used to create clothing with blooming flowers, changing colors and transforming shapes. I first learned about this project by Diana Eng (Twitter / Wikipedia) at Eyebeam's Open Studios last year. As a designer + technologist, I actively seek out people working on things that infuses art + science. And so when Diana told me that her collection's debut at the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in New York, I was more than delighted to check her out. THE COLLECTION Research and development for the Fairytale Fashion collection are shared online at FairytaleFashion.org as an educational tool that teaches about science, math, and technology through fashion. Fairytale Fashion was created with the support of Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the United States. A total of nine looks were showcased on the runway on February 24th, 2010, and some of them will be available for purchase on March 1st at DianaEng.com." - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML from Bookmarklet

"Soon you may not have to be an A-list celeb, department-store buyer or magazine editor to get a front-row seat at a fashion show. As the luxury and fashion industries continue to struggle with sagging retail sales and consumers' diminishing interest in $2,000 It bags, designers are looking for alternative ways to show their wares. And more and more of them are turning to the Internet for a bigger audience and to shrink their overhead. "The cost of a fashion show has become prohibitive," says David Lauren, Polo Ralph Lauren's marketing chief. "And because of the economy, fewer members of the press and buyers are making the trip to New York to see the show." The result is that many designer-initiated brands — including the less-expensive lines, like Donna Karan's DKNY, that are presented during New York Fashion Week — are rethinking the traditional fashion show. This fall the British designer Alexander McQueen made a splash by live-streaming his Paris show on his website. The season... more... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML from Bookmarklet

"Albert Einstein once said that imagination is more important than knowledge. So where do you go to find great imagination? I caught up with Lou Anders, the editorial director of Prometheus Books’ science fiction and fantasy imprint Pyr (http://louanders.blogspot.com/ ), at the recent OryCon convention in Portland, Ore. Here’s what he had to say. SLD: What effect does science fiction have on technology? Anders: There is a wonderful website called “Technovelgy.com” – where science meets fiction – on which they list every sci-fi idea that has become reality. The last time I went to the site, they had something like 1,400 entries listing both the device and the expression of the device. A great many of the devices are there because someone read about them in a sci-fi story. SLD: How about that other way around, i.e., what effect does technology have on Sci-Fi? Anders: William Bison and Bruce Sterling created the cyberpunk movement in science fiction. Gibson first wrote about cyberspace... more... - Wildcat from Bookmarklet

10 Ways to Interact With Computers in the Near Future
"Men have a infamous tendency to let their phallic tendencies dictate what they create. It is perhaps why some of the most famous builds like the Great Pyramids, Taj Majal and the Washington monument were made. So, it didn’t surprise me when I recently read about an effort to create the world’s first male organ controlled computer. So now that men have brought the inevitable to the realm of technology, I wonder how else humans of the future might interact with their computers? With the recent (or not so recent) popularity of Nintendo Wii and its gyroscopic features, the rest of the human-computer interface market seems to have entered an innovative period. It looks rather likely that we’ll soon be playing games through VR googles, gesturing in the air to perform fluid dynamics calculations and maybe even writing Dear-John letters by thought alone. Best of all, we won’t have wait decades for many of these advances as some amazing new products are already in prototype and will be market-ready in the very near-term. Here are some of the particularly interesting interface candidates:" - Wildcat from Bookmarklet
